to Sequim Lavender Weekend!
The City of Sequim is proud to host two premier lavender events: the Sequim Lavender Festival® and the Sequim Lavender Farm Tour and Fair. Lavender farms in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley are known for growing a premier product. This is due to the care given to the plants by the farmers, the hand-harvesting and processing of lavender flowers and the ideal weather conditions that make Sequim the perfect place to grow this beautiful and fragrant herb. While you’re here be sure to visit both of the lavender events in the city — the Sequim Lavender Festival Street Fair in downtown Sequim and the Lavender Arts & Crafts Fair in the Park at the Water Reuse Demonstration Site north of Carrie Blake Park. Each setting offers a fun and festive experience with quality vendors, live entertainment and a lot of good food. Visit plenty of lavender farms and experience how these family owned businesses are helping to maintain an agricultural economy in the valley. Each farm is a unique adventure, as they all reflect the visions and interests of their owners and have something special to offer. Pick your own bouquet of lavender and take home quality lavender products. Once again, the Sequim community has planned a whole host of activities in conjunction with the lavender events. We hope you can participate in a few of those as well. Enjoy a fun and fragrance-filled weekend!

Each of the lavender farms has organized unique mini-festivals amidst the lavender for your enjoyment — food, music, demonstrations and activities on each farm bring the weekend’s celebration to life. Celebrate with Sequim’s world-class lavender farmers! In the beginning … It’s a common question: How and why does lavender thrive in the tiny, rural Dungeness Valley? Part of the answer lies in the pleasant and pastoral natural aspects of the North Olympic Peninsula. Given the purported annual rainfall of only 15 inches, mild weather that has no hint of tornadoes, hurricanes, severe snowstorms or heat waves into the 100-degree mark and spectacular views of mountains, water, flora and fauna, it’s the perfect place for glorious lavender farms to thrive. The other part of the answer is the tenacity of citizens who had a vision to restore the agricultural base of the fertile Sequim prairie. Ideas bantered about; flowers, vegetables at Saturday markets, and more. Eventually, the purple lavender plant became the course of action. The founders of the lavender movement, including former owner of Olympic Lavender Farm, Mary Borland-Liebsch, and Mike Reichner of Purple Haze Lavender Farm, tapped not only into the right crop, but were also founders of what has become a worldwide agritourism market. According to those who keep the history books, eight lavender farms began planting between 1995-1998. Since then, at least 30 more have been established. Today, more than 150,000 lavender plants are in the ground, with hundreds of thousands of plants grown right here sold wholesale around the world. Granted, there are lavender farms throughout the country, as well as the world — indeed, Provence, France, has long been celebrated for its lavender fields — but Sequim is actually trademarked as the Lavender Capital of North America®, and the climate for growing lavender mimics that of Provence. The popular Lavender Weekend held annually in mid-July celebrates not only the aromatic purple plant, but remains a tribute to those who had the foresight to take a chance on a venture that was not altogether certain. Thankfully, those early lavender pioneers stuck to their dreams, and now, lavender and the increased tourism it generates in this pleasant, quiet corner of the country, has certainly taken root and will continue to blossom for many years to come.

Directions to the Arts & Crafts Fair in the Park via Highway 101: • Coming from the east: exit onto Washington Street; at Blake Sand & Gravel (QFC corner), turn right onto Blake Avenue. • Coming from the west: take the River Road exit into Sequim; turn right onto Washington Street; at the east end of Sequim, just past QFC, turn left onto Blake Avenue. There is street parking and other parking options at the Fair in the Park. All farms offer free parking to guests.

Handicapped parking is available inside the Park at the gate off North Rhodefer Road. Handicap permits or registration cards are required. There is limited paved handicapped parking and paved paths suitable for wheelchairs. All booths are located on uneven grassy ground; handicap accessibility is limited. All of the Farms on Tour are handicap accessible, but note that the fields are uneven and there are no paved paths. Ask about ASL interpretation services at the nearest info booth.
One of the best ways to enjoy the Lavender Farm Tour & Fair is to be a volunteer. Thanks to the dedication of over 200 valued volunteers, the Lavender Farm Tour & Fair is made possible. The members of the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association (SLFA) include the original Sequim lavender farms who were instrumental in organizing and hosting the first lavender farm event in Sequim 18 years ago. Since then, lavender farming has become synonymous with Sequim; new farms have sprung up; and this localized cluster of farms now brings visitors to Sequim throughout the year. Even tourists who do not come to Sequim because of lavender will end up visiting one or more of the SLFA farms during their time on the Olympic Peninsula. Many of our farmers sit on various local and national boards and committees, contribute gift baskets and other items for charity fundraisers, donate time and funds to nonprofit organizations, and purchase locally produced ingredients for their products whenever possible. Members of the SLFA also allow for events to be held in their fields and facilities year-round. Three of the SLFA farms are Washington State/USDA certified organic – the highest concentration of certified organic lavender farms in the U.S. The SLFA is thankful for the ongoing support of hundreds of thousands of visitors and local community members as lavender farming continues into the future. “We are Sequim Lavender!”

The Schiefens are excited to share the third season of their lavender adventure at this picturesque farm that has been open to the public for more than 15 years. From the first blooms of spring to the harvest and distillation of certified organic essential oil in late summer, this family farm is sure to offer a unique farm experience. LOST MOUNTAIN LAVENDER FARM
As new empty nesters, the owners of Lost Mountain Lavender since December 2011, Monica Quevedo and Ray Veihl have the feeling they’ve found their own piece of heaven in the 3-acre farm brimming with more than 100 varieties of lavender and 1,200 plants. Compared to the urban sprawl of Orange County, Calif., where they hail from, the farm is an oasis of flora and fauna, the scent of lavender from summer to fall, the bounty of its well-established fruit orchard in autumn and the Olympic Mountains towering over the small farm. “We are a sustainably managed farm, our intent is having a healthy living plant, soil ecosystem that does not need pesticides of any kind, therefore, growing beautiful flowers without harming people or the earth,” is how Monica and Ray describe their farm’s impact on the environment. “We do not use chemicals/pesticides, we don’t even kill slugs!” Although the farm is labor intensive, it is the curiosity people have about lavender that most surprises Monica and Ray. “People really want to know what it’s like to grow lavender,” they said. Lost Mountain’s sample garden has 50 varieties of lavender, a good place to compare the myriad species of the plant. The waterwheel is also a popular place for photos. Monica and Ray enjoy hosting people from all over the world and talking about the details of running a lavender farm, making the products which are made on the farm and sold in the quaint gift shop on site. The couple looks forward to sharing everything there is to see, smell and taste of lavender.

OLYMPIC LAVENDER HERITAGE FARM
When the Hermosillo family bought a certified organic lavender farm north of Sequim near Dungeness Bay in 2013, friends and family said, “What?!” Free-spirited and constant travelers, settling down and buying a lavender farm that is open to the public all summer and featured on the annual Sequim Lavender Farm Tour was the last thing anyone expected this family to do, including themselves. A university administrator and a biochemist by trade and in their mid 30’s, they decided when they moved to Sequim that getting back to America’s agricultural roots would be their next big family adventure. Marco and Christa have been growing and researching lavender for a number of years, and purchasing Olympic Lavender allowed them to extend their acreage from 6 to 11 with in three locations in Dungeness. Through their continuation with the USDA certified organic program and with both Marco and Christa being Master Gardeners, their farm management strategies and horticulture knowledge leads them to be environmental stewards of their lands and encourage a sustainable culture of lavender farming. For Christa, farming is an important lifestyle for her children to learn and be a part of. Having grown up on a cattle ranch and farm in Eastern Washington, Sequim has provided her family the opportunity to continue this farming legacy. With so many farms of Sequim’s past nearly gone, the farms of Sequim’s future are lavender and no one is more excited than their two young children, Raquel and Cruz. So what’s new? Come celebrate the 18th year of the Purple Haze Lavender Farm experience! Washington Lavender is situated on 10 acres overlooking the spectacular Strait of Juan de Fuca. DOWN ON THE (LAVENDER) FARM Growing lavender can be a time-consuming, yet satisfying way to live By Mary Powell A riddle: What is a little crazy, loves dirt, is flexible, a risk-taker, creative and a good mechanic to boot? Answer: A lavender farmer, of course.

These are a few of the descriptives lavender farmers here on the North Olympic Peninsula gave when asked about life on the farm and specifically, what it takes to maintain a successful business in today’s agricultural arena. “Lavender farmers better have a good dose of entrepreneurial verve – not quite the attitude of a fighter pilot, but something approaching it,” is what Marcella Stachurski said about the topic. Stachurski should know. Owner of Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm — the first and oldest herb farm in Washington — and passionate about lavender since 1967, Stachurski has just about experienced it all when it comes to growing, selling and making lavender products. “Flexibility, resilience, a positive attitude and a good mechanic or handyman are important as well,” she adds. Cedarbrook is but one of dozens of lavender farms in and around Sequim, formally known as the Lavender Capital of North America®. Five of what are called Heritage Farms will be open for tours during the Sequim Lavender Weekend. Stachurski will have a booth featuring handcrafted lavender and culinary products at Lavender Fair at Carrie Blake Park.
A shared lifestyle
When we think of farming, what generally comes to mind is corn and wheat fields, dairy cows and beef cattle, pigs, and chickens, perhaps a large barn or two, a multitude of farming equipment, all situated on an average of 400 acres or more in the Midwest.

Now comes nearly the opposite, the picturesque, unique, family owned and managed lavender farms, most a stone’s throw away from our backyards. Average-sized farm, about eight acres, most with the traditional barn, and some, like Purple Haze Lavender Farm, have chickens and even a pair of peacocks. Compared to a 1,000-or-more-acre wheat farm, lavender farming might sound a bit easier. Not true. From planting, harvesting, equipment repair, getting product — whatever it might be — to market, farming is farming. Weeds and more weeds is a common theme among our local lavender farmers. Ridding the rows of lovely lavender plants of nasty unwanted grasses, noxious vegetation is one of the most timeconsuming tasks. “Weeds, weeds, weeds,” was how Marco and Christa Hermosillo, owners of Olympic Lavender Heritage Farm, responded when asked what shocked them most about lavender farming. “With more land comes more weeds, of course, but we’re adapting and have learned a new kind of patience.” Another common theme is the joy of sharing their lifestyle and farm with friends and visitors. This is especially true during the ever-so-busy days leading up to the Sequim Lavender Weekend and Lavender Farm Tour, when fields, gift shops and patios dotted with tables serving up lavender treats are open for all to experience.
Jardin du Soleil owners Jordan and Paul Schiefen concur. “We plan and produce up to a dozen events per year on the farm, including the Lavender Farm Tour, which brings thousands of guests to our farm each day, and the Jungible Music Festival, an outdoor music extravaganza,” Paul said. “We love telling our story and answering the questions of the thousands of annual visitors to our farm.” Over at Washington Lavender, owners Janet and Dan Abbott tell of a typical day at their farm. There, daily life includes a combination of lavender farming and sharing the farm with B&B guests at the George Washington Inn. “The day begins with breakfast, incorporating some form of lavender in
nearly every menu item. Our guests then have the opportunity to enjoy the farm and whatever is happening on that particular day. We answer questions, demonstrate and share our knowledge with our guests. Once our guests head out for the day to explore the area, we spend the rest of the day with farm chores and making products. There is always plenty of work to be done, but we enjoy sharing with farm visitors and guests,” the couple recounts. While lavender farmers share much in common, they are yet a diverse bunch. Both the Schiefens and Hermosillos are raising young children along with managing the farm. As the Schiefens put it, “raising a 4 and 7 year old is a full time job in itself.” The Hermosillos have a 4 and 7 year old as well and said that adjusting to a farming lifestyle has been both fun and challenging. “Creating lifestyle changes and new experiences to move us forward in our family/farm culture took buy-in from all of us and it has been a great ride so far.” The family looks for opportunities where they can continue to be independent and unique, but also grow as a strong family unit. The farm has allowed them to do that. The Hermosillos remind us that anyone who has the desire and tenacity can be a lavender farmer. For example, before buying Olympic Lavender, Marco was a university administrator and Christa a biochemist. “He’s a Democrat, I’m a Republican, he’s a night owl, Sequim Gazette & Peninsula Daily News • 29

to the 18th Sequim Lavender Festival®
It is with great pleasure and a lot of hard work that the Sequim Lavender Growers Association™ works year-round to produce this event. This would not be possible without the support of the City of Sequim as well as each member of the SLGA and our staff. Our most important mission is to educate the general public on the beauty of lavender in your own personal garden. We also take great pride in working with other nonprofits in the community to produce this event. A BIG thanks to the local Boys & Girls Club of Sequim and the local Red Cross who help make our event possible.
We value the community we live in and want to make sure it is highlighted in the most positive light. There is so much in our wonderful valley that the visitor can come and see beside lavender. Of course, we want you to see our lavender farms as well as our great street fair with our many lavender farmers in attendance, but while you are here, please visit our local attractions. The Olympic Game Farm has been a standard of family fun for over 40 years. Along with its driving tour, it offers a new “Mini Tour,” which now includes a petting farm, freshwater aquarium, a guided tour through the education area and a historical studio barn tour. Graysmarsh Berry and Lavender Farm, one of our members, has been making families smile
and enjoy the fresh varieties of berries for years. We personally picked our buckets of berries when our girls where young and took them back to California to make our yearly jam, not to mention making wonderful syrup at the campsite for our pancakes! YUM, it doesn’t get better than that! The Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club of Sequim has been donating beautifully made quilts to many organizations for years. When their members donate to us, we once again give back to the community with all our raffle proceeds going into scholarship funds. We were very pleased this year to give two scholarships. Last but not least would be Nash’s Organic Farm store where you can get fresh vegetables and fruits and more in their charming store located in the heart of the fields they work. Location: Six lavender farms and one commercial nursery in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Hours: Farms are open 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Cost: Free. Martha Lane Lavender is a quaint lavender farm set among towering Douglas-fir trees. The lavender varieties grown in rows have been selected primarily for their essential oil quality. This year we celebrate 14 years that our lavender farm has been open to the public and we are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. When we were developing our lavender farm and doing our landscaping, we did so with our future visitors in mind. We wanted those that came here to feel welcomed and at home. Our gift shop was developed with a lavender theme and contains locally produced lotions, soaps, a culinary line and other gift items that are lavender-related. Plants are available for

Cindy Mangutz began painting at an early age in Southern California and was commissioned by one of her mother’s friends at the age of 16 to paint a conquistador. By her early 20s she knew that art was her calling! After marrying woodcarver Steve Mangutz and moving to Leavenworth, they flourished as artists and their careers took off at “Art in the Park.” Cindy turned her focus to a primitive style of painting while Steve began a line of incredibly detailed Santa Clauses. They opened their first shop North Wind Gallery. They both were selected by the Bill Dodge Folk Art Gallery in Carmel, Calif., where they sold original paintings and wood carvings for three years. In the early 1990s the couple and their two children moved to Port Townsend where they opened another shop that was shared by many artists. They began to participate in more and more arts and crafts fairs including the harvest festivals in California and are still “old permanent fixtures” at many of Pacific Northwest shows. Cindy’s influences include Grandma Moses and Charles Wysocki and her inspiration is from the natural beauty found in the Pacific Northwest. You can see her visualization of the sea in the brilliant watercolors shown in her nautical art and the many shades of green from the forests found in her landscapes. Steve makes bentwood twig furniture as well as carving gnome and Santa figures. Cindy paints every opportunity she can and her medium of choice is acrylic on canvas or Masonite to create her visions. When the couple is not traveling to shows, you can find them at their home working on new paintings and carvings on their 10 acres of rugged undeveloped land consisting of numerous recycled structures i.e.; an old converted school bus with a stick built addition, several various small buildings and an old wooden boat that is no longer seaworthy perched on the land. They just recently acquired a freshly retired converted school bus (Hippie Hilton as the seller described it) that has become Cindy’s new art studio!

SPICING UP YOUR RECIPES USING LAVENDER
By Dr. Lavender Gardeners who include lavender in their landscapes savor the fragrant and aesthetic benefits of this versatile plant. However, not all lavender is savory for culinary or edible purposes. The varying flavors of lavender are imparted from the oils in the buds, which differ in a wide selection of plant varieties. One distinctive substance contained in the oils (bud) is camphor. Although touted for its therapeutic, relaxing and “lavenderish” scent, lavender with high concentrations of camphor is not tasty. Lavender buds, either fresh or dried selected from the Angustifolia varieties are commonly more flowery and sweeter in fragrance, non-pungent and more suitable for cooking. The “Royal Velvet” and “Folgate” varieties are very popular for cooking and should be sought out for their color-holding features after cooking and preparation. The “Provence” variety from the Intermedia varieties also is edible. Lavender as a food ingredient is known to continually impart or blend its
oils (flavor) into your recipes, especially cakes and cookies, after they have been prepared. For this reason, cut back on lavender portions if you prepare recipes to be served three or more days later. Fresh-cut lavender foliage and stems also are useful to cover and baste fish and fowl preparations on a sum-

SEQUIM LAVENDER FESTIVAL STREET FAIR
Downtown Sequim is bustling with activity, vendors, food and music The center of the Sequim Lavender Festival is a free, community-spirited Street Fair on Fir Street where visitors will be surrounded by three days of vendors, food and continuous musical entertainment. The Street Fair is in downtown Sequim between Sequim and Third avenues. NEW attractions this year include “Festival Fun for Kids,” our local Boys & Girls Club sponsored activities for tykes, toddlers and children 12 years and under. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

As of publication, the Street Fair’s highend fair will have 150 vendors. Artists will showcase their works in fine arts, glass, fiber, jewelry, leatherwork, metal, photography, pottery, woodwork and more. Other vendors include agricultural, dolls and toy booths. Booths for several nonprofit organizations and festival sponsors can be found at the fair as well. And, of course, there will be a strong representation of lavender products with 12 lavender booths setting up shop at the Street Fair for all your unique lavender products and plants.

ANNUAL QUILT RAFFLE
Stop by the Sequim Lavender Growers Association booth at the Street Fair on Fir Street and purchase a chance to win a quilt donated by the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club of Sequim. Each year, the club donates a quilt to the Sequim Lavender Festival. The quilt being raffled off this year was displayed at last year’s festival. Here is one of our winners’ own words about the quilt they won. “Beautiful Quilt! Thank you SO much! It looks even more gorgeous than we remembered from the Lavender Festival! It will be a treasured heirloom. My daughter is so envious! It just arrived by mail today! We love the color palette! Very reminiscent of the lavender fields. Every time I look at it, I will remember our lovely time we had at this year’s lavender festival. Thank you again!” — Denise and Travis Hood All proceeds from the quilt raffle go to various scholarship funds. This year SLGA awarded a $500 scholarship to Vianey Cadenas, a Sequim High School student, and a $1,000 scholarship to Olivia Lundstrom, an Eastlake High School student who has been around the lavender industry since she was 4 years old. Tickets can be purchased for $1 at the booth. The drawing takes place Sunday and you don’t have to be present to win. Another quilt donated by the club will be displayed at the Street Fair’s center stage throughout the weekend and will be raffled off at next year’s Sequim Lavender Festival. Once again, thank you to the Sunbonnet Sue Club of Sequim for its generous donation, time and talent!

LAVENDER AMBASSADORS Three years ago we changed the name of “volunteer” to “Lavender Ambassadors.” We did this to show how much we appreciated them and to let them know not only are they helping the SLGA, but more importantly reflecting the charm and goodwill of Sequim and our surrounding valley. Many of them walk through the street fair proudly letting the visitors know about our area. Many of the “Lavender Ambassadors” we have for our event are family members from each of the farms on tour. The Dungeness Valley Creamery is a family owned and operated raw milk dairy located near Sequim. We practice the most clean and sanitary conditions from the milking parlor to our customers. We eat and drink what we produce and are proud to be a provider of this high quality natural food throughout Western Washington. We, the Brown family, operated our first dairy in Sequim when we purchased 20 cows in 1971. In 1973, we purchased a 76-acre farm in Everson, where we milked Holsteins under contract to a large milk processor. Upon returning home to the North Olympic Peninsula in 1989, we built our current facility from the ground up and started producing milk in 1992. At that time, we switched our herd from Holsteins to Jerseys to improve the richness and quality of our milk. In 2006, Dungeness Valley Creamery became a Certified Raw Milk Dairy in pursuit of keeping our family’s farm sustainable. Today, the Dungeness Valley Creamery is on the Dungeness River one mile from the historical community of Dungeness. It is home to 38 acres of lush pasture, 60 Jersey cows, the newly built creamery and the Brown family home.
