Building Matters...

Hall Windows In 1997, Pembroke commissioned the well-known firm of Goddard and Gibbs to undertake the restoration and conservation of the Hall windows near High Table. The first phase of the project to have been completed is the Oriel window overlooking the Chapel Quad, which commemorates the Chancellors of the University from the third Earl of Pembroke to the first Duke of Wellington, and also depicts some of the College's earliest benefactors including George Townsend, Baron Ossulstone and Francis Rous. In addition to the conservation, creation of new designs forms an important part of the company's work. Projects recently undertaken have rangedfrom a heraldic window in the Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey to a set of nine character windows for Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland Paris!

During 1997, it became clear that the lead in the windows had begun to disintegrated and many small pieces of glass were missing. The whole section of glass was removed by Goddard and Gibbs for restoration work which included a thorough cleaning, and repainting work where deemed necessary. One large area of stained glass which was missing was replaced with a new section depicting a design suggested by John Platt, who undertook much of the research into the windows. When the time came to replace the windows, it soon became clear they did not fit.The original work-men had forced the glass into the openings and additional work was necessary to ensure that new windows were securely inserted.

During 1998, the Goddard and Gibbs will return to Pembroke to start work on phase twothe windows overlooking St Ebbes, which the commemorate Fellowship at the time of the building of the Hall. 'One of the fundamental principles of stained glass conservation is that all treatments should be reversible. This allows for future developments which may provide better protection or a less intrusive repair'.

The restoration of the Hall windows is just one of the projects currently being undertaking to conserve the fabric of the College.

Goddard and Gibbs is the oldest, and the largest If you are interested in learning more stained glass company in the country, employing over about this important conservation forty craftsmen in East London. During 1997 other project, or would like to become involved works included conservation on windows at Hampton with any of our building projects, Court, Windsor Castle, the Palace of Westminster and please contact Dr Ray Rook. Century 5 Campaign In 1995, the Master and Fellows decided to form an Appeal Committee to steer the course of the Century 5 Campaign. I was very pleased to be invited to become Chairman of the Campaign and I really believe in the College's efforts to ensure the future of what is, after all, a unique educational experience. Pembroke provides academic rigour in a wonderfully supportive learning environment. It deserves our full support.

Graham McCallum (Law 1944) Chairman of the Century 5 Campaign

Pembroke will continue to flourish with our help. The College continues to attract the most splendid students. Let us all contribute to give them the same start at Pembroke which we enjoyed.

It speaks for the College's enterprise that almost ÂŁ8M has been raised so far in gifts and pledges. I would like to thank those who have so generously given already. The College is deeply grateful to all its benefactors - be they old members, parents, trusts, companies or just good friends. At College events, I am often asked whether Pembroke has come through the financial crisis. My answer is, 'Yes, certainly'. The figures speak for themselves. 'So why is an Appeal necessary?'. Well, the publication of the Dearing Report into Higher Education has created much speculation about the future of University funding. For poorer Colleges like Pembroke, the financial ramifications of proposed changes could be far-reaching indeed. We must start off with a sound capital base. The College's endowment needed a sharp boost to cope with modern day pressures, and the Master has provided the truly vital impetus needed to alert us all to the effort required to guarantee Pembroke's future. I am delighted to introduce to you the distinguished members of the Pembroke Advisory and Appeal Committees. Their time and expertise have played a key role in the success of the Campaign to date.

UK Telephone Campaign As Pembroke approaches its fifth century of service, the Master and Fellows, together with the Campaign Appeal Committee have identified three main areas of need Support of Fellowships & the Tutorial Method Restoration & Conservation of College Buildings Student Hardship Fund

Dr Ray Rook Development Director for the Century Steve Caplin During the Easter vacation, we will be asking you to receive a telephone call from a current Pembroke student who will seek your support for the Century 5 Campaign. He or she WILL be asking you for money, but an essential part of the call will be to let you know our plans for the future, and also to hear your views. STAGE ONE TARGET - LlOM RAISED SO FAR - ALMOST £8M!

The success of the Century 5 Campaign is vital to survival of Pembroke as a College where Fellows teach by the tutorial method and first-rate students are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds. Our Stage One target is /10M. We have to date raised almost £8M in gifts and pledges. It is a fantastic achievement. We have also been promised a most generous Matching Gift which means that once the figure of 18M has been raised, every £1 thereafter will be worth £2 to the College. This is a major boost to our efforts, and I am sure you will agree, a great incentive to give. MATCHING GIFT MEANS EVERY £1 DONATED IS WORTH £2 TO THE PEMBROKE CAMPAIGN FUND

If you would like to talk to me or any member of the Development Team about the Century5Campaign, please do let us know. We would be delighted to hear from you. Ray Rook

News from the JCR Book Drive

Women's Hockey

The JCR has embarked upon a project to collect 2000 books to send to the townships of South Africa. Over 500 books were collected in the first month of the project, which is being co-ordinated by the Pembroke Education Project (PEP) with full support from the MCR and SCR. The success of the project so far has been boosted by a large donation from Mr Roger Boning (SCR) and also by the OUP, Penguin Books and Blackwells.

In Cuppers, the Pembroke team battled its way through to the quarter-finals of the Cuppers Tournament where it met Jesus in a hard fought and well-played match. Despite being 2-1 up at half time, the team was eventually beaten 4-3. We have great hopes for the League Championship this term, having been champions for three years in a row. Let's hope we can make it a fourth!

The JCR President would be very interested to hear from any old members who could assist by donating books or by offering logistical support to this project. If you think you can help, please contact Tarik O'Regan on 01865 276427.

PCHC has recently played host to teams from St Mary's Hospital, London and The London Hospital, and during Hilary term there are plans to take 40 Pembroke players - men and women to play fixtures against Cambridge Colleges. There is, of course, the infamous battle against the other Pembroke to look forward to!

East End Twinning Pembroke has recently established a 'twinning' arrangement with Canon Barnett primary school in the East End of London following an approach by the Stepney Children's Fund (Toynbee Hall). Records show that Pembroke JCR was one of the very first contributors to the Fund, which was established in 1885. Volunteers from the JCR are being sought to help with high profile special needs departments and there are plans to hold a presentation outlining the aims of the joint project in College during Trinity term.

Overseas Scholar - S. Aneeqa Aqeel 'Being at Pembroke is a wonderful experience. I am glad that the College is relatively small as I now know almost everone here and congregating in Hall for dinner is of course an especially good way to meet new people and see friends. The College has become home to a great extent and I am enjoying the way it works: conversations with the porters, the librarians, who are angels, the squirrels on the lawn, and the three intriguing statues in North Quad which I can see from my window. The work is demanding and my tutors, of course, are excellent. I am also helping out in the JCR as Photocopier Rep. To be the Pembroke Overseas Scholar is an honour and will strive to make its investment a worthwhile one'.

Rugby The Pembroke rugby season is well underway. The 1st XV is mid-table and prospects are looking good with the return of Dom Peret, currently playing for the Blues, and Kieran Bowers, a greyhound squad player, to the pack. We also have three members playing 1st team for the University League Team. As to the future, a large number of current players are still only in their first year, and with a good intake in 1998, things can only improve for Pembroke Rugby.

Lacrosse Pembroke's strong connections with University Lacrosse continue. After providing the Club Secretary and the Captain last season, two more Pembrokians now hold positions on the Blues side. Oxford find themselves top of the South of England Second Division and are finalists in the Intermediate Flags Competition. The Blues look forward to beating Cambridge for the sixth consecutive year on 7 March. A mixed club has also been established, with a large squad which remains unbeaten so far this season. The President, Simon Hayden (Pembroke) would like to hear from old members interested in helping University Lacrosse - in particular with the purchasing of sticks, or even with the provision of a Varsity Match Trophy!

Pembroke Ski Club - Founded 1996 During the Easter Vacation, Pembroke Ski Club - the first ever College Ski Club - will be travelling to Val Thorens with a party of 38 current students. President Haitham Ghattas, and Club Secretary Carina Bloom (both 1995) are looking for ways to reduce the cost of the trip to enable more students to participate. Perhaps you or your company might be prepared to sponsor the special PCSC rugby shirts at ÂŁ24 each, or contribute towards the cost of the coach trip? Carina Bloom. PPE. 1995

Professor Charles Dowsett

College Record

It is with great regret that we report the death of Professor Charles Dowsett, the first holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Chair of Armenian Studies and a Professorial Fellow of Pembroke from 1965 to his retirement in 1991, when he was elected to an Emeritus Fellowship.

Members will by now have received their copies of the latest, albeit much delayed, College Record which covers the period 1995-6. The co-editors are hoping to get the next issue out soon after Easter and thus be in a position to have the 1997-8 number published on time.

The various obituary notices which have appeared in the national press have paid their proper tribute to his abundant academic achievements. Before ill health curtailed his activities, Charles Dowsett was the most convivial of colleagues; the lively parties he frequently held in his rooms at the top of the Fellows' Staircase were a feature of College life. Following the death of the equally convivial Robert Baldick in the early 1970's, Charles held the office of Steward of the Senior Common Room and, for a brief period, served as Dean of Degrees.

In the 1995-6 Record, the co-editors encouraged members to buy a copy of the Chaplains' recently published 'Pembroke College: A History in Pictures' (16 incl. p& p) The latter is currently on leave, doing the necessary research for the forthcoming full College history. Any members who have material which might be relevant to the project are advised to get in touch with John Platt via the College.

A memorial service is to be held in the Chapel on 25 April. A Student Hardship Fund has been established in his memory. If you would like to contribute to the Fund, please contact Mrs Gloria Mundy in the Development Office.

Garden Party - In 1997 over 400 old members and friends attended the annual garden party in Chapel Quad. In addition to the Jazz band, harpist, art and silver displays - and of course the bouncy castle for the children - a display of student rooms, one from the 1990's and one from the time of Samuel Johnson was organised by the Hall Steward. This year, the theme will be the College gardens and Mrs Barlow would be delighted to receive pictures, photographs and other items suitable for display. If you can help, please contact her on 01865 276425.

Development Foot-Notes The Pembroke Parents Association (PPA) Room will be officially opened by the Master at the 1998 Garden Party. Invitations to donors to the PPA project will be sent out in due course. We are seeking sponsorship to enable The Pembrokian to continue as a full colour publication. We distribute to 5,000 old members, parents and friends on a quarterly basis. Can you help?
