Michaelmas Term The 1996 McCallum Lecture was delivered by Gary Hart who spoke on the subject of The American Election. The Lecture, held on 2 November, was attended by over 200 Fellows, old members, guests and current students. Lunch in Hall was followed by a reception in Broadgates Hall hosted by members of the JCR Committee. Those present included Lord Justice Mummery (59), Sir Leonard Peach (53), Sir Philip Otton, Foundation Fellow Frank Buckley, Sir George Sinclair (31), Charles MacKinnon (73), Gary Flather (58), and Ian Josephs Oa

Keith Lovel and Gary Hart Organ Recital Matthew Morely, Assistant Director of Music at St. Bride's Church, Fleet Street held an organ recital on 3 December in the College Chapel. Mr Morely has performed in many of Britain's cathedrals, and venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Smithsonian Institute in the USA. He has also worked with the opera singer Lesley Garrett, and this year joined the music staff of the Glyndebourne Festival. Medical Lunch A Medical Lunch was held to celebrate the 90th birthday of Percy O'Brien and the 30th year of Dr Savile Bradbury's association with the College. The lunch was attended by over 90 former students who travelled from all corners of the country to acknowledge the contributions of their former tutors. Law Dinner The Pembroke Law Dinner, hosted by the Master and Law Fellows, was held in the Library of the Reform Club on 22 October. Feedback from many of the 86 Lawyers who attended has indicated that there is considerable support for the Dinner becoming an annual event. 1996 Christmas Card The College would like to thank old members for their generous support in purchasing the 1996 Pembroke Christmas Card. Sales exceeded all expectations with almost 8,000 cards sold. There are plans to reproduce a further window from the Chapel, the Three Shepherds, for Christmas 1997.

Members of the McCallum ramify Bursarial and Conference News Work has commenced to restore the stained glass windows to the east of high table in Hall, and the stone work on the Tower. The refurbishment of student rooms continues, with plans to provide central heating and ensuite facilities in the Besse Building which, it is hoped, will also become a key asset in vacation conference business. A new en-suite double guest room is available on Staircase Five, overlooking Old Quad, for the use of old members. In 1997, Pembroke will accommodate delegates from America, Sweden, Japan and Russia in what is anticipated will be the busiest conference programme so far. News from the Junior Common Room Alison Hendren has been appointed JCR Development Liaison Officer - a new role which seeks to build upon the already successful partnership between the Development Office and the JCR. Jenny Carter-Manning has completed her term in office as President of the Oxford Union, and other members of the JCR have been active in University-wide activities including the Campaign for Free Education, OU Homeless Action, the European Affairs Society, the Guild Society, and Oxygen FM. The JCR would like to extend its sincere thanks to James Watters ('66) of Watson, Farley & Williams, who kindly responded to the appeal for help to update computer facilities. The JCR computer room is now greatly improved, though the pressure to maintain up-to-date facilities continues, and further assistance from old members would be greatly appreciated.

Pembroke Profile -

Dennis Andrews - Pembroke Silverman Dennis Andrews (pictured left) has worked for the College since 1988 and was appointed full-time Silverman in 1993. He replaced Michael Bond who had worked for the College since 1969. Before coming to Pembroke, Dennis spent ten years in the Royal Artillery, with postings in Germany and Northern Ireland, before returning to Oxfordshire where he spent twenty-two years in farming becoming a dairy herdmanager. The office of Silverman is one of great responsibility within the College. Dennis oversees a large collection of pieces, many of which have been presented by old members. In addition to the task of safeguarding the collection, his duties include the cleaning, maintenance and selection of pieces for display. Among his favourite pieces is an unusual serpent-handled claret jug, dating from 1856.

The inventory of silver goods owned by Pembroke extends to 574 A4-size pages and when put on display during the yearly Silver Assay, the College collection covers all thirteen of the long oak tables in Hall. Among the oldest pieces in the Collection is a set of Apostle spoons dating from 1600 and a splendid Cromwellian flagon. Silver which dates from the reign of George III is particularly well represented in the collection and the Boat Club, the JCR and the Teasel Club each have their own collections.
