Pembroke Profile -

Graham McCallum - Chairman of the Century 5 Campaign I consider my years at Pembroke as one of the happiest and most valuable times in my life and that my involvement in the Century 5 Campaign to raise funds to help secure the future of the College is a real opportunity to put something back. Since the establishment of the College in 1624, Pembroke's commitment to achieving the highest standards of education, research and pastoral care for its members has remained unchanged. With the financial support of Pembrokians, the College can continue to develop as a vibrant community, and more importantly one which seeks to nurture each student's physical and cultural as well as academic potential. It is a great investment in the future. Graham McCallum came up to Pembroke in 1944 having been awarded an open Classical scholarship from Glenalmond. A war-time golfing blue and College tennis and squash player, on returning from three years in the RAF flying Mosquitos in Asia, he chose to read Law 'to keep my options open, not having a clear idea then of what my future career might be'. In 1950 he joined Butterfield & Swire as a shipping clerk in Hong Kong, where in 1952 he married Margaret, a fellow Scot with whom he has three children. 'I was really extraordinarily lucky to go straight to Swires from Pembroke at a time when good jobs were hard to find and to work for a company where I positively looked forward to virtually every day. I was attracted by the idea of working for a long-standing family firm and in particular one which offered a career overseas with regular changes of scene. In those days there was talk of selling sugar from a houseboat on the Yangtse and of shooting pheasant when off duty but this picture really represented an earlier age'. Graham spent forty-four years with the Swire Group. In addition to Hong Kong, he was also based for several years in Japan and Australia before returning to London as an Executive Director on the main board of the parent company, John Swire & Sons Ltd. He has continued to maintain strong links with the Far East as a board member of Edinburgh-based Far Eastern related investment trusts. Graham is also a board member of the Japan Festival Fund which was established in 1991 to promote greater understanding of Japanese culture in the UK. For the past year, Graham has been Deputy Chairman (to Sir Terence Conran) of the Design Museum and has served on the committee of the Globe Theatre.

- TRINITY I hRM ROUND-UP On 18 May, the Master, Fellows and members of PCBC past and present gathered to celebrate the raising of the new PCBC flag. The flag was presented by the Lilley and Nolan families to commemorate Pembroke's position at the Head of the River. The Eights Week Garden party, held on 25 May, saw a record turnout as over 300 old members and their families gathered in Chapel Quad. In addition to the traditional champagne and strawberries, music was provided by a local Irish folk group and the many children were entertained by jugglers, magicians and the presence of a bouncy castle. Further attractions were a display of PCBC memorabilia by the Librarian Naomi Van Loo, and a reconstruction of a student's room from the time of Samuel Johnson created by the Steward, Irene Barlow and her assistant Anne James. June saw an exhibition of the best of the JCR art collection in the Rockefeller Room, following the restoration and reframing of a number of paintings facilitated by the generosity of an old member. On display were first class works by Francis Bacon, John Piper and Elisabeth Frink and a 'Head of Balzac' by Auguste Rodin recently presented to the College by an old member. Also during Trinity, a crystal rose bowl was presented to the College by the Board of the Smithsonian Institute, and a colossal bronze bust of George Washington was presented to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the US University, students of which Pembroke welcomes each year as part of the year abroad scheme. A North American Reunion was held at the end of June during which the Bannister Graduate Centre on Brewer Street was formally opened in the presence of Sir Roger and Lady Bannister, and the Master and Mrs Kathie Booth Stevens. Among those who attended were Morris and Bruna Abram, Bruce Fetter and Verena Fjermestad, James and Janet Hester, David and Patricia Johnson, The Venerable Dr Brian Kirk-Duncan, Dr Paul and Jane Kelly, Arthur Kroeger, Philip Lader and family, Greely and Ninette McGowin, Vernon and Martha Palmer, Michael Rochelle and family, Gary Sandrow, Terry Slesinski-Wykowski and family, Revan and Elsa Tranter, and Dr E. Kenneth Weir. The Pembroke cricket team, captained by Dan Marks, won the University League and a production of Machiavelli's The Mandrake was performed by the Pembroke Players in the North Quad. Following some 45 years service to the College the groundsman, Wilf Collett retired in June. A well-known and liked local figure, Will's retirement was marked by gifts from the fellows and staff. The College has enjoyed a particularly successful conference season, providing accommodation and a full range of facilities for clients including Estee Lauder, The Manorial Society, the Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Galvanisers Association.

The College is embarking on a significant refurbishment program focussing on North Quad and the Macmillian Building, with further plans to upgrade the accommodation on staircases 9, 10, and 17. CCTV and a smart key access system has been installed with the intention of extending both systems to all areas of the College.
