EXTRA HELP: Two visually-impaired students pay attention to a volunteer reader at a recent workshop

Reading lessons for blind students With exam season round the corner, some 60 visually-impaired students got help with their revision. The students from Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas (Cacat Penglihatan), Setapak, were at a ‘Read to the blind’ workshop with 40 Great Eastern Life Assurance staff. The one-day workshop was held for blind students sitting for their Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. “The workshop is the least we could do to help lift the burden of the students. Being handicapped should never get into the way of someone succeeding in life,” said Great Eastern’s

executive vice-president, Bruce Lee. Ruziyaton Omar, assistant principal of the school, said that it is the first time the school has been invited to take part in the programme. “These special children have confidence and self esteem problems. They tend to feel isolated and left alone because they feel they are different from normal people. This programme helps them feel accepted,” she said. The school’s top student, Amirah Fatihah Rozaidi, 17, who lost her eyesight to glaucoma, said she felt

lucky to join the workshop. “I am now focusing on my SPM exam and my target is 7As. My dream is to become a lawyer or a lecturer and I look forward to helping people,” she said. Another student, Mohd Izzat Zulkifli said he is ready for his PMR exam and is grateful for this chance. The 15-year-old said his dream is to become a computer programmer. Volunteer Rachel Wong said the workshop helped open her eyes. “We should be thankful that we are able to see, I think people should give their best to help these children because without help they will feel isolated,” she said.
