INTEL PROJECT: REVIVING TALES Retelling stories from the older generations and easing the mobility of communication between the young and the old. A Collaborative Project by Alvin, Kevin, Jane and Pei Wen

DESIGN BRIEF To design and conceptualize a communication device that records and bridges the gap between different generations in an Asian context.

PROBLEMS & ISSUES The younger generations in Asia are increasingly focused on careers and achievements, so much so that they tend to leave their homes and towns to live on their own, especially in urban areas. Physical distance and also a lack of time causes a gap between the elderly and their children and grand children. Moreover, in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s age when many employ technology to aid in communication, the elderly is left out because they are intimidated by technology and do not understand the complicated gadgets. Also, with this dwindling communication between the old and the young, much of our heritage will start to disappear; how do we keep all the stories of our grandparents alive? How do we bridge the physical distance to impart skills such as dancing and traditional art forms?

• Hand held device • Target group: elderly • Device must be easy to use • Preferably wordless, simple navigation • Organic shape, form must not be intimidating • Tactile/gestural feedback because the elderly prefers the sense of touch

Based on the brainstorming and research, we decided on these two main concepts:

A simple, portable electronic device for the elderly which is at its very basic of communication, via video feed, compatible with todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advanced gadgets.

A teaching device which allows the user to learn physical movement via environmental projection.

FUNCTIONS & TECHNOLOGY A summary of the various functions that our product should have as well as researched technologies that are existing today.

Ferro Fluid interface

IDEA #1 A handheld, mobile device which has an ever-changing surface to aid in the tactility factor especially for older generations.

Inspired by Prayer Beads The interaction with prayer beads is a very tactile and intimate experience, using the sense of touch above all else.

IDEA #2 A handheld tablet controller that highlights gestural communication in electronic devices, allowing for plastic time, and addressing the limits of visual and spoken language.

Touch Interface

Push in both side buttons to toggle ON/OFF.

Malleable interface for intuitive drag and drop, gestural recording and functions.

Side Buttons

Touch interface for scrolling, rotating or zooming/resizing.

Gyroscope contained inside detects and records movements.

IN ACTION Portable and light device that can be carried around, with no cumbersome parts or cables.

Teleconferencing by laying device down on surface. Recording and projecting simultaneously, or separately.

Visual recordings can be made to be stored or sent as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;messagesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to be viewed at a later time.

Projections can be made either of callers, or visual references as stories are being interpretated /translated.

DEVELOPMENT A combination of malleable and tactile surfaces which address the limits of visual and spoken language especially for older generations.
