FIRSTFRAME WORD FIRST 15 February 2012 So the first 2012 Formula 1 test has come and gone. Plenty head scratching going on in the aftermath of four intensive days at Jerez de la Frontera. What to make of the goings on in Spain? For sure the big teams are not quite up to standard straight out the box... Are they in trouble? Time will tell - that time being qualiyfing in Melbourne - when the season really gets underway on the third weekend in March. In stark contrast - to the subdued start by Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren - Lotus are looking decidedly feisty early on, as they did last year this time... Fittingly on his return to F1 Kimi Raikkonen topped the timing screens at the end of day one at Jerez and was his poker faced, monotone self when talking about his exploits at the end of the day. For a guy who claims to love F1 and missed it dearly, he could at least try not look like he has been at the dentist all day having root canal treatment - boring Iceman. But then it is the image he has carefully cultivated and, let’s be honest, has attracted a legion of fans. Also looking sharp, albeit with their 2011 car, were Mercedes GP who are supposedly going to unleash a super car at the next test in Barcelona. Meanwhile in this issue it’s all about Jerez. Enjoy! hile the smiles in the Lotus pits were obvious at Jerez, the same cannot be said of Formula 1’s grandee outfits Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton had his first try of the MP4-27 on Thursday and said the new McLaren felt “pretty good”. “My initial feelings are pretty positive,” he added. “The car feels reasonably quick.” But with every other 2012 car featuring a radical ‘step’ in its front nose, some reports believe McLaren may have missed a trick by opting for a conservative solution. “It is not a trick or a loophole that we did not spot,” said McLaren’s technical director Paddy Lowe. “Some people have some interesting ideas around the use of that step, and we are looking with interest at all of that,” he told the Mirror. Actually, the McLaren was not far off the pace of Sebastian Vettel’s new Red Bull, but the pair were a long way from Romain Grosjean’s impressive Lotus E20, and the 2011 Mercedes driven by Nico Rosberg. Vettel, also getting his first taste of his 2012 machinery on Thursday, admitted that there are “question marks” about all of F1’s regular pacesetters. Nevertheless, “We are where we want to be,” the reigning world champion smiled. “It feels fine and as 15.02.2012

aggressive 2012 Ferrari on Thursday looked no more impressive in Fernando Alonso’s hands than it had under Felipe Massa’s control earlier this week. Britain’s Daily Mail said the F2012 is “ugly in more ways than one”. “I can only say that it is going to take 10


a lot of analysis to put all the pieces of the jigsaw together,” said Ferrari’s British technical director Pat Fry. “I am not happy with where we are at the moment.” Even less happy on Thursday were Force India’s Jules Bianchi and Nico Hulkenberg, after the reserve crashed the

new VJM05 before setting a lap time. There were not enough parts to repair the car and so Hulkenberg’s scheduled track debut was postponed. “I’m very sorry,” said Bianchi, “because my mistake has cost the team a lot of time and effort.” 11

fter three days of testing at Jerez completed, Ferrari technical director Pat Fry surprised many when he came out and admitted that he was unhappy with where his team stood with the development of the F2012 at that stage. Speaking to media in the Jerez paddock Fry said, “I’m not happy with where we are at the moment. I think there is a lot of room for us to improve from where we are. Reliability wise it is good. Performance-wise I think we’re okay, but we can play around with the performance and improve some corners and some particular parts of the corner, but I wouldn’t say I am happy yet until we get the whole thing working.” “Certainly the three tests rather than four does compress things a little bit. I think we have a lot of work to do.” “The basic platform is okay. We’re looking at the various characteristics and all the bits we have to test. We can play around with the through corner characteristics, so we can do different things at corner entry, mid corner to exit, and it is really trying to find the right balance of those things.” “We’re working through a reasonably large matrix here, so on each run we are trying almost a different configuration. There is a lot 15

of analysis here and then back at the factory. We are using the simulation and the simulator to make sure everything ties in, so we can put the right package together.” “I think everything is a lot more compressed, so there is a lot of pressure on everyone. You have to try and make decisions quickly. We have a one week break coming up, but then it is two solid weeks and then you are packing the freight for Melbourne. So there is a lot of work for everyone to do. It is the same for every team up the pit lane.” “We are not concentrating on taking the fuel out and trying to set a lap time. With only 12 days of testing before the next race, we have to make the most of all the time we have got.” “We were set back a little bit by the foot of snow in Fiorano, certainly the first morning of Felipe [Massa] was spent doing what we would have done there, so we are now trying to play catch up. Right now, it is about trying to get the right package together.” “The front suspension is not that a big a deal to be honest. It is a small aero benefit, a small centre of gravity benefit, and I know it is different from what people have done in the past – but it is not that big a risk to be honest. yallaf1

IS THE ‘DRIVER COOLING ON THE RED BULL RB8 IL

W

hen Adrian Newey revealed that a mysterious letterbox slot-shaped air inlet in the stepped nose of the new RB8 car is for driver cooling, not everyone inside the F1 paddock was entirely convinced with that answer. When the 2012 Red Bull was launched recently, it was apparent the ‘step’ nose design differed from its rivals in the form of a sizeable inlet where the monocoque meets the new mandatory lower nose height. Some surmised it must be for KERS cooling, or perhaps even an F-duct style channel through to the diffuser. Amid suggestions Mercedes has come up with an F-duct style channel in its 2012 front wing, Red Bull designer Newey explained that the nose slot is in fact simply to cool the drivers. “Traditionally the driver cooling slot is at the front of the nose,” explained Newey, “but really for styling as much as anything we moved it to where you now see it to break up the aesthetics of the ramp.” There are, however, doubts about that explanation, particularly with closeup images showing that the main inlet is actually divided into two channels at the middle. Indeed, the Telegraph last week quoted Newey as having said the slot is “primarily” for cooling, which suggests that it might have another use. 15.02.2012

According to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, “the competition is suspicious”, having already been outsmarted by Newey in past years in the area of flexing wings and blown diffusers. 20

When asked last week about the ‘cooling inlet’ amid Jerez’s cold temperatures, Mark Webber reportedly grinned mischievously to Autosprint and said: “The toes are a bit too cold now actually.” 21

LOTUS E20 MOST IMPRESSIVE NEW CAR OUT-THE-BOX

fter step noses and clever exhausts, the latest Formula 1 buzzword in the Jerez paddock was Lotus – and their E20 in particular. The former Renault team turned heads with its new black and gold E20 car, which was been consistently the 15.02.2012

quickest 2012 car throughout the opening test of the pre-season. “I am one of the happiest guys in the world right now,” said Romain Grosjean on Thursday after outpacing Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. 22


The reigning GP2 champion was also quicker than the 2012 McLaren, steered for the first time on Thursday by Lewis Hamilton. “The Lotus looks quite impressive,” said Hamilton. Drawing conclusions based on test results is an unreliable practice, but

the body language in the Lotus garage was confident. “At the moment they are quicker and more consistent. There are more question marks about us, Ferrari and McLaren,” said Vettel. 23

REPORT JEREZ TESTING “For the first test it looks good,” team boss Eric Boullier admitted to Finnish broadcaster MTV3, “but still you can’t really speculate on anything. “Between here and Melbourne, all the cars will change a lot. “It is true that today we have a good car, we are able to drive a lot of laps and that is why we are at the front,” he added. After watching the action track-side from a corner, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg told Auto Motor und Sport that the E20 is “a missile with an incredible amount of grip”. “The Red Bull and the Lotus make the best impression,” agreed 1982 world champion Keke Rosberg, who is also at Jerez. Hamilton described Grosjean’s best time – 1.18.4 – as “good”, while Red Bull’s Webber wanted to know what compound of Pirelli tyre was fitted to the Lotus. Told it was the medium, the Australian admitted: “Then it was a very good lap.” Grosjean smiled: “The car is easy to drive and predictable everywhere, especially in the fast corners, and when you go over the limit it is easy to get back.” Said Webber: “If Grosjean can do those lap times then we will all have to watch Kimi (Raikkonen).” 15.02.2012

JAMES ALLISON: THE CAR WE TAKE TO MELBOURNE WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT

J

ames Allison, technical director of Lotus F1 Team, gives insight into the workings of his team during the crucial Formula 1 pre-season as they prepare the impressive E20 for Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean ahead of the 2012 Formula 1 season. This week back at Enstone the team are focusing on the buildup of chassis two to be used at the Barcelona test. Is this process slightly easier now that we have experience from the first chassis build? When you do the first chassis build of a new car there are always a couple of things that need to be re-positioned compared with where you expect them to be. When it comes to the second build you’re already aware of these elements, so it becomes a case of copying what you’ve done previously. So yes, it generally takes a little less time to do the second one than the first as you’re not having to find ways around things. 15.02.2012

This year’s design (E20) is perhaps slightly more conventional than last year’s (R31), particularly without the forward-facing exhaust concept. Has this also helped make things easier in the build process and on track? Not having the forward facing exhaust has definitely made the car build part of the process simpler. It’s much quicker to get the car turned around every evening and get it ready for the next day’s running because it’s a more straightforward layout. In terms of running and analysing the car on the track, there shouldn’t have been anything inherently difficult about last year’s car, but it did turn out to be quite challenging as the exhaust system created several aerodynamic issues. So in that respect the E20 is easier to work with again. This means our race engineers can fill their boots with springs, roll bars, tyre pressures, cambers, and so on; all the conventional tools in the engineer’s arsenal. 28

With an immensely complex design as a modern F1 car, the build process must be far from simple. Do the team have a ‘Haynes Manual’ guide to help? Every part on the car is detailed in an assembly drawing, so typically each subsystem, like the power steering, the brakes or the front / rear suspension for example, has a drawing showing how it all bolts 15.02.2012

together and describing how it should be set up/operated. These drawings show in some detail what goes in what order. The race team then supplement the assembly information with an indexed photo library showing the best practise routing of the various cables and pipes. We don’t need to be quite as verbose perhaps as a haynes manual, because the guys who design the 30


car are only upstairs from the guys who are building it, so you can have some dialogue in place of documentation. With so much development on going at this early stage of the season, how different will the E20 that sits on the grid in Melbourne be to the Jerez car? The car we take to melbourne will be

significantly different to the one we ran in Jerez. There’s a lot of work still to do before the season opener, and so many elements will change; the front wing, rear wing, side pods, pod vanes, engine cover, barge board, floor, some suspension elements, and some small brake duct features to name but a few! As always, it’s going to be a very busy few weeks. 31

JEREZ DAY 1: KIMI RAIKKONEN SIGNAL

K

imi Raikkonen rolled back the years with the fastest lap in his Lotus on the first day of Formula One testing on Tuesday, 7 February. The 2007 champion, making his comeback after two years in the world rally championship, looked at home right from the start of a chilly morning in southern Spain and completed 73 laps. His best time of one minute 19.670 seconds was quicker than any lap in testing at the track last year. That could be explained by a number of technical factors, and any early excitement had to be tempered with the knowledge that the fastest driver in last year’s Jerez test was Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who went on to score just four points for Williams all season. “It was a positive day. The lap times don’t matter today. I’m happy with the balance of the car, which feels good, and the fact that we didn’t have any major issues,” said Raikkonen. “Also, I did more than a race distance today and did not have any physical problems at all, which is good.” If Raikkonen was his familiar self afterwards, facing a media scrum outside the former Renault team’s 15.02.2012

Tuesday there was a definite bounce. Britain’s Paul di Resta was second fastest for Force India ahead of Germany’s Nico Rosberg in last year’s Mercedes and Australian Mark Webber in the new Red Bull. The session was twice red-flagged, first when Australian Daniel Ricciardo


stopped his Toro Rosso on the track with an oil pressure problem and then when Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi ran out of fuel. Webber had to wait to get out on track with the title-winning team’s plans hampered by a plane carrying the RB8’s rear wing assembly being diverted from Jerez to

Seville due to early morning fog. “Sometimes we can’t control Mother Nature so we risked it a bit tight on the schedule and we paid a bit of a price, which can happen sometimes,” said Webber, winner of the final race of 2011 in Brazil. “There are obviously lots of changes. 37

With an array of new cars on track for the first time, the McLaren stood out as the only car other than the Mercedes and ageing HRT not to have the new stepped nose that all have adopted to satisfy the revised aerodynamic and safety rules. Britain’s Jenson Button, the 2009 champion, appeared happy enough with his day in a marked change from last year when McLaren started testing with a car that was soon shown to be hard to handle and way off the pace. “There are no niggly areas with the car, which is nice. Quite different to last year. I’m happy,” the 2009 champion told reporters. “The front wheels are on the front, the rear wheels are on the back, it feels like it’s going in the right direction, and when you turn right, it goes right. Sometimes that hasn’t been the case.” He gave Raikkonen a reminder of what he can expect this season, when there will be six champions on the starting grid, by overtaking him on track near the end of the session. “He’s obviously in a very competitive car, and whatever they did today - low fuel or whatever - it was still quick. ichael Schumacher ended day two of Formula 1 testing at Jerez at the top of the timing screens in the year old Mercedes MGP-W02 with some 2012 bits bolted on for evaluation, but it was Mark Webber at the wheel of the Red Bull RB8 15.02.2012

The pair racking up 46 and 69 laps respectively. Fifth fastest was Raikkonen in the Lotus E20, who caused the first of only two red flags, when he ran through the gravel and forced the stoppage to clean the track. Again having a somewhat subdued day was Felipe Massa in the Ferrari 2012, who ended the session seventh and will hand over the car to Fernando Alonso for the final two days at Jerez. The Brazilian did 95 laps on the day. Also not attempting any earth shattering times, probably by design, was Jenson Button in the McLaren MP4-27, the 2009 world champion ending eighth fastest after 85 laps behind the wheel. He will be handing over the cockpit to team mate Lewis Hamilton. Sergio Perez took over the Sauber C31 from Kamui Kobayashi, and racked up 68 laps on his way to setting the ninth best time ahead Pastor Maldonado in the Williams FW34. With 139 laps on the board, Heikki Kovalainen did more mileage around Jerez on Wednesday than any other driver. He was 11th quickest. JEREZ DAY 3: ROSBERG FASTEST (OLD GROSJEAN (NEW CAR)

M

ercedes GP topped the timing screens for the second day in a row, at Jerez de la Frontera, this time with Nico Rosberg doing duty in the cockpit of last year’s MGP-W02 with some 2012 parts bolted in place for evaluation ahead of their new car’s first appearance at the next test in Barcelona. Rosberg’s time of 1 minute 17.613 seconds was almost a second up on his team mate Michael Schumacher’s best 24 hours earlier. Rosberg racked up 118 laps in a productive day for the Silver Arrows. Next best, and fastest of the drivers in a 2012 car, was F1 returnee Romain Grosjean, driving the Lotus E20, who ended the the session with a best lap time of 1 minute 18.419 seconds – 0.806 down on Rosberg’s best but 0.878 faster than the next best on the day – also the fastest time set with a new car so far this year. The Frenchman ended the day with 117 laps on the chart. Grosjean looked particularly comfortable in the E20, setting his time early in the day and indicating that the Enstone factory has yet again produced a decent car out the box. REPORT JEREZ TESTING their first outings of the year in their respective new cars. Vettel finished the day third quickest in the Red Bull RB8, with Hamilton fourth fastest – the pair completing 96 and 80 laps respectively. Rookie Jean Eric Vergne had his first sampling of the Toro Rosso SRT7 and was also quickly into a reasonably fast groove on his way to notching up 79 laps and the fifth fastest time. The Frenchman was fastest of the trio of Ferrari powered cars of which Sergio Perez was next best (sixth) in the Sauber C31 and Alonso ending the day seventh on the timing sheets – nearly two seconds down on Grosjean… Bruno Senna did 125 laps on his first day in the Williams FW34 cockpit with new boy Giedo van der Garde ninth, and last of the runners, 5.711 seconds down on the top pace. It was an unhappy day for Jules Bianchi in the Force India VJM05 who was caught out by a cold track, skimmed the sand trap before ending in the wall at Curva Sito Pons. This prompted the first red flag of the day, but more critical is that the team were not able to run for the rest of the day which was bad news for Nico Hulkenberg who was due to get his first run in the VJM05 during the afternoon session. The team are flying parts which should enable the German to do laps on the final day. The HRT garage remained closed on day three, after running for two days with Pedro de la Rosa in the team’s 2011 car, while Marussia has not been present at all for the first test. JEREZ DAY 4: FERRARI END TEST ON A

T

he topsy turvy nature of Formula 1 pre-season testing became evident on the final day, of four, at Jerez, where Fernando Alonso ended the week top of the timing screens and signalling that the Ferrari F2012 is not as bad as it seemed during the first three days at the venue in southern Spain. Ironically Alonso found pace in the new car on the day after the team’s technical director, Pat Fry, stated, “I’m not happy with where we are at the moment. I think there is a lot of room for us to improve from where we are.” That improvement came swiftly as Alonso finished the day with a best time of 1 minute 18.877 seconds. Whether the team found some extra performance or the result was that of a low fuel run we probably will never know. On the downside, a hydraulic problem curtailed the team’s programme severely, the Spaniard could only manage 39 laps in total, losing half a day of valuable track time as the reds struggled with the problem. Notably, Alonso’s best time was almost half a second down on Romain Grosjean’s best lap, set by a new car – the Lotus E20 – 24 hours earlier. 15.02.2012

When Vettel finally got going he clocked 50 laps and the third best time in a flurry of hot laps towards the end of the day. Up next was Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren MP4-27 with the fourth best time and 86 laps racked up – a mere 0.044 seconds separating Vergne, Vettel and Hamilton. After establishing his speed a day earlier, Grosjean had a more subdued second day in the cockpit of the E20. He managed 95 laps and the fifth best time. Within a second of Alonso’s best was Kamui Kobayashi who ended the day sixth quickest after 76 laps around Jerez. Luckless Nico Hulkenberg, who had no running in the Force India the previous day thanks to reserve driver Jules Bianchi clipping the wall in the morning, rendering the VJM05 immobile until new parts arrived, did 90 laps and set the seventh best time. Bruno Senna in the Williams FW34 was eighth on the final timing sheets, ahead Jarno Trulli who was making his debut in the Caterham CT01 – the veteran Italian slowest of all on the day. Mercedes GP, who had topped the timing screens on the second and third day with their 2011 MGP-W02, opted to skip the final day as did HRT who packed up after day two. A

fter four days of pounding around Jerez de la Frontera, during the first pre-season test of the 2012 Formula 1 season, the Lotus E20 emerged as one of the betterpackages out the box. The teams trackside operations director, Alan Permane, talks about the test in southern Spain and the the days ahead. With the first test at Jerez now behind us and Barcelona coming up next week, what’s happening here at Enstone during the break? This week we’ll be building our second car up. So it’s chassis two that will be going to Barcelona, while chassis one will be rebuilt and taken to the seven post rig in our research and development facility for suspension development work. Having time to reflect on the event in Jerez must be a welcome break before Barcelona. Have the team had a chance to relax before heading back to Spain? It’s given some of us the chance to have a weekend off which is always nice after an intense few days at the circuit. Having said that, while we’re not quite experiencing the full-on 18 hour days of last week, everyone is straight back to working hard in preparation for the next test. INTERVIEW ALAN PERMANE analysing set-up options, reflecting on what we learned in Jerez and how we can apply that knowledge in Barcelona and throughout the season. There’s a long list of improvements we’re looking to make. We had a few minor issues with radiator leaks and so on but nothing major, and certainly nothing we won’t have fixed in time for Barcelona. After an encouraging first outing in Jerez, have you noticed a difference in terms of the atmosphere back at Enstone? You can definitely feel the effects around the factory. Everyone seems to have a smile on their face. Having said that, we’re not going to try and run before we can walk. We’re very conscious that there’s a long way to go. The car is certainly reliable and well balanced, but it’s too early to say any more than that at this stage. It’s impossible to predict performance after just one test. There were clearly a lot of positives last week. What would you say is the most important thing we can take away from the first test? I would say there are two things. I really can’t separate one as being more important than the other. The first as we’ve mentioned before is the reliability of the car, which has been very impressive so far. Although we had a few niggling issues there was nothing that stopped us running for a significant length of time. The second is the way the car responds to set-up changes. The E20 is clearly a nice package. When we make changes to the car the drivers can feel it, whether it be positive or negative, which means that further down the line it will be a much easier car to set up and dial pace into. 15.02.2012

GERARD LOPEZ: KIMI CLEARLY FEELS AT

otus team boss Gerard Lopez has hit back at suggestions that Kimi Raikkonen’s public persona is an accurate reflection of the true 2007 world champion’s true character. While the winner of 18 grands prix with Ferrari and McLaren is undoubtedly among F1’s most naturally gifted drivers ever, he also has a reputation for being lazy, unmotivated and uncooperative with the media and sponsors. But after signing the 32-year-old Finn – who is nicknamed the ‘Iceman’ – for his return to F1 in 2012 after two years in world rallying, Lotus insists it is more happy with Raikkonen so far. “We feel very good with him and he clearly feels at home,” team owner Lopez is quoted by the Sun. “He smiles a lot when he’s with us. But most importantly he says he feels like part of the family. I think Kimi has a public image that honestly from what we’ve seen does not translate into how he really is. He’s a very hard worker, very good at providing feedback and has a good team spirit.” Lopez hinted, however, that he and team boss Eric Boullier did have some doubts about Raikkonen when they were considering their 2012 lineup. “Once we talked to him, once we understood why he was coming back to F1, we really felt comfortable,” he insisted. “If you look at what happened at the (Jerez) test nobody can say he’s not on the pace.” Raikkonen, 32, made his F1 debut at the 2001 Australian GP with Sauber and since then made 156 starts, scoring 18 wins and the one world championship with Ferrari. His first win was at the 2003 Malaysian GP driving for McLaren. He left F1 at the end of 2009, making way for Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari team. 15.02.2012

een from the outside, the Jerez test for Scuderia Ferrari might seem a bit schizophrenic: always a long way back on the time sheet for the first three days, about two or three seconds off the pace and then suddenly, Fernando Alonso is fastest on the fourth day, almost a second ahead of the rest. In fact nothing had changed: the team continued to work on its own programme, centred almost exclusively at gathering data to understand the handling of the F2012. The 1.18.877 set by Fernando this morning means little, as the Spanish driver stressed when he met the press at the end of the test. “This time is worth nothing as is the one I set yesterday and those of the previous days,” said Fernando. “Yesterday, we worked mainly with the hard tyres and the others ran the softs and we were seventh. Today, we fitted the Softs and maybe the others did not and we are first. That’s all it is. “We got on with our job, even if today and yesterday we had some reliability problems we could have done without which prevented us from doing everything we would have wanted,” continued the Ferrari man. “For me, it was good to be back in the car after two and a half months and feel once again all the emotions that come with driving a Formula 1 car. I think that, from the start of the test up to today, we have improved a great deal, it’s like night and day, but there is still much to do, especially on the aerodynamics and on reliability. Then, we will see if it is really a sign of great strength to have immediately done so many kilometres: last year, on the first day we did a lot of laps and then we know how things turned out, so maybe there was too big a margin…” 15.02.2012

Already, here at Jerez, the moment we did make some changes, we got the response we were expecting, even if it’s true that the fact the car is more complex from a mechanical and aerodynamic point of view definitely makes the tasks more complex.” “Today [Friday] we saw a good example of that: we have only done around forty laps partly because it took so much time to carry out the changes we needed to make on the car to complete our programme. I think that in Barcelona, when we will be back on track, the situation will be different and we will be much better prepared compared to this test, where above all we had to learn how to get to grips with this car. Even we the drivers have more to do, because with so many new things on the car it’s even more vital we give the right feedback to the engineers.” Fernando obviously did not want to launch into predictions about the championship. “We will see, as there are still several weeks to go to Melbourne. Here, day after day, we have progressed, getting ever more confident in the car: we must continue in this direction and improve, but it is much too early to draw any conclusions.” The Lotus in the running for the title? “I don’t know as even for them it’s a bit early and I would rather just say I am very happy to see Kimi back: he’s a great driver and a great person.” 15.02.2012

enson Button’s body language after the first day of Formula One testing on Tuesday spoke happily of a new McLaren that was everything last year’s car was not. A year ago, McLaren turned up at Jerez to give their new MP4-26 its first test run. It proved barely capable of stringing any laps together as well as being way off the pace, with a complicated ‘octopus-like’ exhaust system that was soon jettisoned. Button and team mate Lewis Hamilton spent the early part of the season playing catchup to Red Bull but ended up with three wins apiece while Sebastian Vettel romped to his second championship with 11 victories. Although McLaren have taken a different design path to other teams this season in response to regulation changes, they were confident at last week’s MP4-27 launch that there would be no repeat of last February’s misery. “What a beautiful day. Lovely. It’s been a good day. This morning we did our installation and system checks which 15.02.2012

probably took a bit longer than I would have wished for. But apart from that the running’s been good,” beamed Button after breezing into the team’s motorhome. “There are no niggly areas with the car, which is nice. Quite different to last year. So I’m happy,” continued the 32-yearold Briton. “I’m very happy in the car. I’m in a good position. I’m really low, which I always like, trying to get as low as possible, with the way that the car is. “I’m much lower than last year. I can just about see out, which I love. I love that position, well inside the car. I feel I’m part of it. And some promising times. But we don’t know where we stand and we won’t do until the first race.” Button completed 60 laps, including one 15 lap run, with the eighth fastest time. He said the car looked like providing a good base for improvements in the next few days. “There’s obviously work we need to do to improve it, but it feels right, which is good. ichael Schumacher is hoping the late arrival of his new Mercedes will pay off after doing nearly two race distances in last year’s car on the second afternoon of Formula One testing at Jerez de la Frontera. Despite that, and despite setting a quickest lap that was meaningless on a day when rivals were trying out their new cars, the German still played down his title chances. The seven-times world champion pounded out 132 laps, with a best time of one minute 18.561 seconds, to gather tyre data on the new Pirelli rubber. Mercedes have decided not to run their 2012 car until the second pre-season test in Barcelona later this month to give them as much development time as possible. “It (bringing the car out late) maybe is an important factor because we have worked longer on our car,” the 43-year-old Schumacher told reporters afterwards in the Mercedes garage. “As I said before, I don’t think we can realistically achieve a championship car from where we started last year. “We have to build our way there. I’m confident we can do that, in future, but let’s take it step by step,” added the German, who has not been on the podium since he began his comeback in 2010. Schumacher said reliability was the main focus and Mercedes hoped to have learnt from the past. “Our programme is done in a way that we believe in it,” he added. “I’m around to fight for the championship. Whether we can or cannot do it, that is something that will be proven this year, or whenever.” 15.02.2012

nergy drinks billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz believes that back-toback F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has the capacity to dominate again in 2012 and the team will support him in the quest for a triple title, while insisting that the team are committed to providing Mark Webber the opportunity to challenge the young German. Mateschitz told Speedweek: “He still has great potential ahead of him because his experience, his consistency and his domination in different situations will be given free rein. His focus in qualifying was already part of his strength but he is going to be even stronger in competition because he knows the complexity of his sport even better now.” The Red Bull boss is confident that his team will again set the benchmark and be the team to beat, while expecting Webber, 35, to raise his game and challenge his team mate “It’s important for the team that the duo are quick and fight on an equal footing,” said Mateschitz who has not ruled out signing Webber for 2013. At Jerez the Austrian said, “Our primary goal is to put one of our juniors in the car. That’s one reason why we changed the drivers at Toro Rosso. ed Bull big boss Dietrich Mateschitz is giving Mark Webber at least an equal chance to get back on terms with his dominant teammate, back to back world champion Sebastian Vettel, in 2012. After his 2010 title challenge, Webber was overshadowed by Vettel last year. But team owner Mateschitz told Kleine Zeitung newspaper that the pair will continue to have equal status this season. “Our attitude has not changed — there are no team orders,” the Austrian billionaire said. “It starts at zero again, for both of them.” As for which Red Bull driver will get the upper hand in 2012, Mateschitz is open minded. “From today’s point of view it is difficult to say. But why not (Webber)? I’m curious to know how hard or difficult or impossible it will be for Vettel to defend his dominance,” he added. Beyond 2012, however, Webber has no contract, and Mateschitz confessed that “our primary goal is to put one of our juniors in the car”. He also admitted that rule changes could play against Red Bull for 2012, but still expects Adrian Newey’s car to be on the pace. “The competition copied from us 15.02.2012

ewis Hamilton identified Mika Hakkinen’s former manager Didier Coton as a key man in possibly creating a ‘happy bubble’ around him at race weekends this season, as he attempts to put a torrid 2011 season behind him. McLaren’s 2008 Formula One champion had a controversial and disappointing season last year, despite winning three races, and has at times appeared in need of guidance and support since stepping away from his father Anthony. That’s generally what he will be there for,” added Hamilton, a day after Coton’s appointment was announced. Finland’s Hakkinen won his two titles with McLaren in 1998 and 1999 and Belgian Coton, who has a Monaco-based management stable of his own, is an old hand in the paddock. Asked whether he felt he now had the desired bubble around him, Hamilton shied away from the word. “I’m not going to use the phrase, but it’s definitely a step toward that direction. And I think I’m closer to having that already,” he said. The new car also kept his spirits high, particularly after the difficult start to last year when McLaren began on the back foot and had to play catch up with a car that was embarrassingly unreliable and off the pace in testing. he 27-year-old did 80 laps and completed 354km in a session where lap times were largely immaterial but reliability and consistency was a key goal. “I wasn’t really sure where we’d be today, but when I put new tyres on I was able to extract the grip quite easily, and it definitely felt as though it’s something we can work with,” he declared. “I wouldn’t say the car is more predictable than last year, but it generally feels like an evolution of last year’s car in many ways. “There are some things which have been lost, like the downforce on the rear, it’s not as good through the high-speed corners as it was last year, but I’m sure we’ll get that back,” added Hamilton. “Last year we only did 10 or 15 laps and then we had some failures, but today I did 80 laps, so it’s a big improvement on last year, and mileage is everything.” 15.02.2012

BRUNO WRITES A NEW C IN THE SENNA LEGACY

runo Senna’s grandparents have never attended any of his races and, as he prepares for a new start in Formula One with Williams, he does not expect them to do so now. The Brazilian says his family is completely supportive as he treads in the footsteps of his late uncle Ayrton but the 28-year-old also recognises that the pain of the past will always be there. Ayrton, perhaps the greatest of all grand prix drivers and certainly one of the most charismatic, died in a Williams at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in a crash that threw both nation and sport into mourning. He had won his three titles with McLaren and that tragic weekend was only his third race for the 1993 champions. “I hope it is going to be a great, nice chapter,” Bruno, affable and enthusiastic, told Reuters at the Jerez circuit where on Thursday a Senna will step into a Williams as a Formula One race driver for the first time since 1994. “The beginning of history to be honest. Many people ask me about how my family felt about my coming to Williams and everything. Everybody is super happy. my grandfather (Ayrton’s father), everybody because everybody has been working so hard for this to happen. “They know that the team is a strong team with a good pedigree… hopefully we will back on top form together.” 15.02.2012

Williams offers a chance for Bruno to show he deserves to be in Formula One on merit and not just for the name and sponsorship he brings. Although he entered Formula One in 2010 with struggling HRT and then started eight races for Renault last year, Thursday at Jerez was the first time he has taken part in a pre-season test since his GP2 days in 2008. Senna once told reporters that ‘If you think I’m fast, just wait until you see my nephew Bruno’ but the world is still waiting for the evidence. “It’s no pressure,” grinned Bruno when reminded of the words that will always follow him. “Of course, Ayrton regarded me very highly in go-karts but being quick is not everything that a real race driver needs. “A race driver needs to be quick, to be intelligent, to have good relationships and be in the right place at the right time. There are a lot of factors that would create a successful race driver. “We are trying to put them all together and I think this is the start of the right conditions for me.” As a youngster, Ayrton’s death stalled Bruno’s career and it took him 10 years to get back on track. In many respects, he is still catching up. “I’ve been around (in F1) for two years but not really racing for two years. I’ve been racing for eight races and everything else was just kind of participating,” he said. 94

drian Newey emphasised his loyalty to Red Bull during testing at Jerez, saying that walking out on the Formula One world champions would feel like abandoning his children. In a clear sign he intended to see out his Formula One career with the British outfit, the design genius that every team in the paddock would like to poach said Red Bull felt very much like family. “So long as I am enjoying it and people want me to work here, I’ll carry on doing so,” Newey told reporters on the first day of preseason testing in southern Spain. “I can’t see myself going anywhere else. “I’ve been involved in the team from very early on, I feel very centrally involved in it and proud we’ve managed to get from the ashes of Jaguar to where we are today. “That in itself brings a huge amount of satisfaction and the slightly paternal feeling of wanting that to carry on. To now leave for another team would kind of feel a little like walking out on your children in a way.” Red Bull, who renamed Jaguar after saving that team from being shut down at the end of 2004 when Ford pulled out, have taken both titles for the past two years with Germany’s Sebastian Vettel. FEATURE ADRIAN NEWEY Ferrari have made no secret that he would be top of their wish list. The track debut of the latest Newey-designed creation is always an eagerly awaited event but early morning fog kept it, and Australian driver Mark Webber, out of sight for longer than intended on Tuesday. Newey explained the plane coming in from England with the rear wing assembly, which had been held back for checks after an online launch, had been unable to land in Jerez and was diverted to Seville. “We were stuck waiting for it to get from Seville to here,” said Newey. Asked how testing had gone otherwise, he smiled: “Well, it hasn’t caught fire yet and it’s managed to do a few laps.” The online launch, offering a fleeting glimpse of the car, had shown an intriguing slot at the base of the ramp of the nose into the front bulkhead and raised speculation about whether Newey was up to his tricks again. The designer said it was simply to cool the driver. “Traditionally the driver cooling slot is always right at the front of the nose, really for styling as much as anything we moved it to where you now see it just to kind of break up the aesthetics of the ramp that’s required by regulation.” Asked whether he expected the rules to throw up any controversies between now and the start of the season in Melbourne on March 18, Newey felt it was unlikely but not impossible. “There’s always a chance that somebody will come up with something that’s right on the border,” he said. 15.02.2012

DANI CLOS SIGNED UP AS HRT TEST DRIVER

H

RT F1 Team has reached an agreement with Dani Clos by which the young 23-year-old driver from Barcelona will become test driver of the Spanish outfit for the 2012 season. The incorporation of Clos is another step in the team’s aspirations of establishing itself as a platform for young talents to reach the pinnacle of world motorsport. Dani Clos will form an integral part of the team, taking part in several free practice sessions on Fridays and travelling to every Grand Prix throughout the season, with the main objective of learning and getting to know the team. There is a lot of hard work ahead of him but Dani will have the whole team’s support, including that of his teammates Narain Karthikeyan and Pedro de la Rosa, to help him learn and progress in such a demanding environment. Dani Clos experienced his first contact with the team this past November, during the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, and made the most of the opportunity given to him. The good sensations that the team and driver had, along with the objective of strengthening HRT F1 Team, helped to reach a quick agreement that was desired by both parties. The Spanish driver will start to fulfill his role as the team’s test driver immediately and will be with the team for the third pre-season tests in Barcelona from the 1st to the 4th of March. 15.02.2012
