WO drinks companies account for four of the top five biggest-selling drinks brands in Scotland’s pubs and bars, according to research firm CGA Strategy. C&C Group commands the top spot on SLTN’s top brands list once again, with Scottish stalwart Tennent’s Lager retaining its position as the biggest-selling drinks brand in the on-trade. Diageo, meanwhile, is the behemoth behind the second, third and fourth largest-selling brands – Smirnoff, Guinness and Captain Morgan Spiced – with Captain Morgan having gained a place to become the fourth biggest-selling brand in the marketplace. Molson Coors’ lager brand Carling is listed as the fifth biggest-selling drinks brand in Scotland’s pubs and bars. In the following pages you will find commentary on the top 15 brands in the Scottish on-trade as identified by CGA’s on-premise measurement service,

followed by an overview of some of the biggest drinks categories in the on-trade. The top brands list is based on CGA data for the year to May 2016. As in previous years, CGA’s data has been compiled from more than 5000 sources, including EPOS data from all types of outlet, as well as wholesalers and distributors. In the vast majority of cases the ‘total brand family’ is used to represent each brand in the ranked list. However, where a single major brand product accounts for a significant element of total sales within the top 75 then it will be included separately, as applicable. Readers should also be aware that CGA Strategy’s research model is adjusted on an ongoing basis, at which point historic data is reworked using the updated model. This updated historic data is used to determine whether or not a brand has moved up, down or held position on the table, rather than using a direct comparison with SLTN’s feature last year.

TENNENT’S boss Alastair Campbell recently told SLTN that Tennent’s Lager had grown its on-trade volumes in Scotland – and therefore its overall share of the draught lager market. So, really, it should come as no surprise that Tennent’s remains the best-selling brand in Scotland’s pubs and bars. Support for the brand this year has included the launch of a new range of fonts.

THE world’s biggest vodka brand has retained its position as the biggest spirit in the Scottish on-trade. Smirnoff is rarely one to keep a low profile, and in the past year the brand has benefitted from several major international marketing pushes, including the latest stage of its We’re Open campaign. Outside of the core vodka, Diageo has expanded the Smirnoff brand this year with the launch of Smirnoff Electric liqueurs.

3. Guinness Diageo

IT’S been a busy year for Guinness. While the Guinness-branded Brewers Project range was boosted with the addition of the Hop House 13 lager (backed by a heavyweight advertising programme), the core Guinness stout was supported by new iterations of its Made of More advertising campaign. On top of that, brand owner Diageo has also kept the Guinness brand active around a range of events including the Six Nations and, of course, St Patrick’s Day – which at this point is practically an international Guinness holiday.

4. Captain Morgan Spiced Diageo

THIS year Diageo encouraged consumers to ‘live like the captain’ as it embarked on a major, seven-figure marketing campaign for the brand. It’s a sentiment that seems to be reflected in Scotland’s bars and pubs, where Captain Morgan is as popular as ever. Elsewhere in the Captain Morgan stable, the brand’s white rum was confirmed as the house pour in all Deltic Group nightclubs across the UK – which includes venues in Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.

5. Carling Molson Coors

MOLSON Coors has been working hard at establishing Carling as a mainstay of the Scottish on-trade in recent years, and the past twelve months have been no exception. Among the initiatives from Molson Coors have been a ‘shirt amnesty’, where football fans could trade their old club strips for new ones, and a sponsorship deal with TV channel Dave, which will run until the end of this year.

The 3.2% ABV ale continues to be associated with Scottish sporting events, particularly golf, while the strength of the Best brand has helped Belhaven’s craft range gain ground in the ontrade.

STRAIGHT out of the hometown of AB InBev, soon to be one of the biggest consumer goods firms in the world, Stella Artois is a stalwart and its strong performance has been maintained again this year. Support for the brand has come in the shape of the Be Legacy campaign and a sponsorship deal with Wimbledon. The Stella Artois chalice glass has been improved over the years and it continues to reinforce the brand’s credentials as a premium continental lager.

PERONI’S premium credentials continue to be underlined by one of the most eye-catching font and glassware combos in the on-trade and, with the brand set to be snapped up by Japanese brewing giant Asahi in a deal rumoured to run into the billions, the Blue Ribbon may well be the belle of the beer ball.

Bacardi Brown-Forman Brands FROM the brand’s own birthday celebrations to musical collaborations, Jack Daniel’s has a longstanding association with lively events and good times. The firm behind the American whiskey brand made a concerted push to attract ‘millenial’ consumers last September through the Jack Friday campaign, and the addition of Tennessee Fire to the range shows that the distillers of Lynchburg still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Edrington Group/Maxxium UK RETAINING its position as the most popular Scotch whisky in the Scottish on-trade, The Famous Grouse range hasn’t stood still, expanding in 2015 with the launch of Mellow Gold. The new variant was the first stage in a revamp of the Grouse range that included new packaging for the flagship The Famous Grouse blend.

STILL top dog of the cider world, Strongbow continues to be shifted by publicans at a serious rate. While brand owner Heineken has now shown there’s more than one string to the Strongbow, with the launch of variants like Cloudy Apple and Dark Fruit, the original is still king. Thanks to a partnership with Team GB at the Rio Olympics the brand will be as visible as ever for the rest of the summer.

THE Caledonian Brewery has been flexing its creative muscles over the last year, launching a range of craft beers, but Deuchars IPA is still unquestionably the Edinburgh institution’s on-trade juggernaut. Retaining its place as the top IPA in the Scottish on-trade, Deuchars continues to be a firm favourite among Scottish pubgoers despite an explosion in its subcategory in recent years.

14. Gordon’s Diageo

TOPPING what some bartenders would argue is the most exciting category in the Scottish on-trade at present is no mean feat, but parent firm Diageo’s continuous investment in Gordon’s with heavyweight marketing support ensures the brand keeps its spot at the top of a rapidly growing pile. Small-batch gins may be multiplying at a rapid rate but there’s nothing to suggest Gordon’s is going anywhere.

LAUNCHED in 2006, Kopparberg’s rapid ascendancy continues and a ten-year march to the 12th place spot is not something to be sniffed at. The Swedish drinks firm may have branched into the beer category with its Fruit Lager this year but the cider is still far and away the most popular product to come out of the forest town of Kopparberg.

FROM the burgeoning burrito bar business to the rapid growth in tequila, Scottish punters seem to have developed a palate for all things Mexican in recent years – so it should come as no surprise that Corona is climbing. Surfing on the back of the recently launched This Is Living campaign, Corona continues to be a beer brand that shines in the sun and publicans should expect to see it remain a beer garden staple for years to come.

LAGER AND ALE

Level lager still king of on-trade THE top brand in the Scottish ontrade is a lager, as are the fifth, seventh and eighth biggest brands, which says a lot about the category even before looking at sales figures. Data provided by CGA puts the category’s value at £651 million, meaning lager makes up an eyewatering 28% of wet sales and is therefore absolutely vital to publicans everywhere. This year’s sales figures are within 1% of last year’s so, while brewers would no doubt like to see growth, the category has stood firm despite a challenging year for the trade in which pubs were forced to grapple with the realities of drink driving

legislation introduced by the Scottish Government in December 2014. Tennent’s Lager is still top dog in the Scottish on-trade, followed by fellow 4% ABV lager Carling – the fifth biggest brand overall in Scotland’s pubs and bars. Continental lager brands also continue to perform well with both Stella Artois and Peroni Nastro Azzurro maintaining their positions from last year, proving that there’s still a thirst for premium lagers in the on-trade. Corona has jumped into the top five lager brands in the Scottish on-trade, buoyed, in part, no doubt, by growing consumer demand for all things Mexican.

ALE is the third-largest category in the Scottish on-trade after lager and wine, so its sales growth of 6%, as revealed by CGA, is impressive, with the category now valued at £238 million – up a whopping £13m on last year. A lot has been made of craft in recent years and it would be hard not to notice the boom in IPAs which has no doubt contributed to sales growth, but the traditional big beasts of ale in the Scottish on-trade have managed to retain their spot at the front end of the top brands list. The top five ales in the Scottish

on-trade remain unchanged from last year with Greene King-owned Belhaven Best still the most popular bitter in Scotland and the longstanding leader of the ale category as a whole. Still the flagship beer for the Caledonian Brewery, Deuchars IPA holds the second ale spot while John Smith’s – the only ale in the top five not to have Scottish heritage – takes third. C&C Group’s Caledonia Best is listed as the fourth biggest ale in the Scottish on-trade followed by McEwan’s 70/-.

A clear winner among spirits THE most popular spirit in Scotland’s pubs and bars, vodka makes up around 10% of total sales in the ontrade, according to CGA – and the category has still found room for growth. Up a further 5.6% on last year’s sales, vodka is worth £230 million to the Scottish on-trade, an increase of £13m on last year and comfortably outselling any other spirits category. The top dogs of years gone by continue to dominate with Smirnoff not only the top brand in the vodka category but also continuing as the second biggest brand in the trade as a whole. Absolut and Glen’s fall in behind as the second and third biggest brands in the vodka category with both climbing up the total rankings by six places and four places respectively. Eristoff has the fourth place spot in the vodka rankings while Stolichnaya breaks into the top five after storming up 19 places in the overall list to find itself 54th overall.

IT’S difficult to overstate how exceptionally well the gin category has performed over the last year and what many publicans will have seen in their own stock takes has been confirmed by CGA: gin is growing and at a rapid rate. The category that was worth £57.9 million last year has grown by almost a quarter, up 22.3% to a value of £70.8m – a rate which, if maintained, would see gin overtake Scotch whisky in value sales by 2020. While small-batch gins have worked their way into the mainstream,

Gordon’s is still the brand to beat, top of the gin category and fourteenth in the Scottish on-trade overall rankings. Bombay Sapphire takes the number two spot followed by Hendrick’s – the William Grant & Sons Scottishmade brand which arguably laid the foundations for the craft gin explosion of recent years – in third place. After Gordon’s, Tanqueray marks the second Diageo entry in the gin top five and a major success for the firm. The premium gin has gained 19 places in the overall rankings since last year making it the 46th biggest

brand in the Scottish on-trade and fourth biggest gin. Beefeater gin, part of the Pernod Ricard stable, retains its fifth place spot from last year, leaving the top five unchanged from 2015; however it seems clear that with such extraordinary growth, gin is a category worth watching. With new small-batch brands emerging on a monthly basis it’s not clear what the gin category will look like in the years to come, but it’s evident now that the gin boom is no flash in the pan.

CIDER is going from strength to strength in the Scottish on-trade, with CGA figures revealing that the category as a whole has grown 5.7% in value terms, up to £135.8 million from £128.5m last year. A lot has changed since the category was reinvigorated by the Magners over ice serve a decade ago and the rise and rise of fruit flavours has no doubt played a role in cider’s enduring popularity. Despite the cavalcade of flavours hitting the market over the years, apple is still in vogue with Heineken-owned

Strongbow taking the top spot in the category and holding on to ninth place overall. Second place cider Kopparberg has soared up the rankings in recent years – the 12 months in question being no exception – while C&C Group gets a double hit from Magners and draught offer Magners Golden in third and fourth places respectively. Rekorderlig continues to go strong as the fifth biggest cider brand, shoring up its range with the launch of Dry Apple in 2015.

Popular brands ready to sell STILL popular among young adult drinkers, the RTD category has maintained its on-trade value sales, with another year which saw sales figures break the £30 million barrier. Leading the pack is WKD which has retained its position with its popular core range supported by seasonal themed marketing, while brand owner SHS Drinks has continued to innovate with the launch of WKD Blush, a new variant targeted at women drinkers. In addition to the number one RTD

brand, WKD climbed one place to the 38th biggest brand in the Scottish ontrade in value terms. Alcohol ginger beer brand Crabbie’s held onto its second place spot in the RTD category while VK climbed 12 places in the rankings to become the 59th most popular brand in the Scottish on-trade and the third biggest ready to drink brand. RTD stalwart Smirnoff Ice continues to perform well as the fourth biggest brand in the category while Ginger Grouse maintained its fifth place spot.

Winning wine is on the rise AS the second biggest category in the Scottish on-trade, making up almost 19% of the alcohol sold, wine is big business in pubs and bars. And the CGA figures reveal that the value of wine sold in the Scottish ontrade has grown again, up 2.6% in the year to hit a total of £432.5 million – an increase of almost £11 million on last year. It’s sparkling at the top of the category with Champagne brand Moët & Chandon maintaining its

position as the most popular wine brand in the on-trade and the 22nd most popular brand overall. Codorniu climbed four places in the overall rankings this year making it the 36th biggest brand in the Scottish on-trade and maintaining its position as the second most popular brand in the category. Elsewhere in the category, Berri Estates finds itself in third place while Stowells and Jack Rabbit are fourth and fifth respectively.

AS arguably the nation’s most famous export, Scotch whisky is loved from Shanghai to San Francisco – and, according to figures from CGA, that love is shared at home too. Sales of the water of life have held firm for the last year with CGA figures revealing that the category is worth £112.5 million to the Scottish on-trade. Blends account for four of the top five whisky brands in the Scottish on-trade, with The Famous Grouse retaining its position as the top whisky in the category and 13th biggest

brand in the on-trade as a whole in a year that saw the range extended with the launch of Mellow Gold. Whyte & Mackay has also performed well over the last year, holding its second place spot in the Scotch category, while spirits giant Diageo fills up third and fourth place with global sensation Johnnie Walker and local favourite Bell’s. The team behind Glenmorangie can also be pleased as the Highland single malt has broken into the Scotch whisky top five this year.

Rum strikes gold

Imports boost whiskey

RUM is really a tale of two categories as CGA figures reveal that while white rum has dipped by 4.5% to a value of £22.5million, the slack has been more than picked up by golden and dark rums which grew by 12.5%, a boost of £9.4m to the category pushing it up to £84.7m. Now settled following tweaks to the name and bottle, Captain Morgan continues as Scotland’s favourite rum while second and third place brands Bacardi and Havana Club have also had packaging revamps in recent years. Sailor Jerry and OVD round out the top five, swapping spots from 2015.

IT’S no surprise that the local stuff is king when it comes to whisky but spirits from overseas still make their mark, with CGA figures valuing imported whiskey at £44.7 million, meaning it now makes up 28% of the Scottish on-trade whiskey market. Jack Daniel’s is still the leader, with the US favourite coming out tenth in the overall on-trade brands listing – up one place on last year. Irish export Jameson also continues to go well and top five spots for Maker’s Mark, Woodford Reserve and Jim Beam prove there’s still demand for quality bourbon.

Legislation driving growth MANY predicted the introduction of a lower drink driving limit by the Scottish Government in December 2014 would lead to a boost in sales for low and no-alcohol brands and, with results from the first full year since the legislation came into force now in, those predictions appear to be correct. CGA figures show a 56% uplift in value terms for the low and no-alcohol category, the biggest growth of any drinks category in the Scottish ontrade.

The £430,000 increase took the value of low and no-alcohol brands sold in Scotland’s pubs, clubs and restaurants to £2.4 million – modest compared to some categories but certainly worth watching. Big beer brands dominate at the moment with success in this category coming from German pair Beck’s Blue and Erdinger Alcoholfrei, Indian alcohol-free offer Cobra 0.0% and local brew Tennent’s Hee Haw, which was launched in December 2014.

A toast to tequila

AT first glance, an increase of 3.6% in value sales for speciality spirits and liqueurs may seem modest, but CGA figures show the category is now worth £122.8 million to the Scottish on-trade meaning it has pumped an extra £4.4m into pubs and bars in the last year. German herbal liqueur Jägermeister still dominates the category as the biggest speciality spirit in the Scottish on-trade in value terms. Sourz, Baileys, Luxardo and Southern Comfort fill the remaining slots in the top five, their strong sales no doubt aided by the continuing popularity of cocktails.

TEQUILA makes people happy, so the song goes, and arguably none more than Scottish publicans who have benefitted from 44% value growth in the category over the last year, which CGA now values at £14.2 million. The cocktail boom may have helped tequila along, but top brands like Jose Cuervo have also been doing their bit to promote the Mexican spirit through marketing campaigns in the UK. El Jimador retains second spot in the category from last year while Porfidio and Tapatio are new entries with Sauza rounding out the top five tequila brands in the Scottish on-trade.

ESPITE the tough trading conditions faced by many of Scotland’s publicans, on-trade wet sales improved over the last year in value terms, which is good news both for operators and the firms behind many of the products featured in SLTN’s Top Brands list. Data from CGA Strategy shows that total value sales in the Scottish on-trade were up 3% over the year to May. That growth wasn’t shared uniformly, however, and CGA has provided its pick of brands which performed particularly well over the 12-month period. The High Flyers list was compiled based on a variety of factors that included growth in sales and distribution as well as total sales. Still the biggest spirit brand in Scotland, Smirnoff put in a stellar performance, outperforming the previous year’s sales by £5.8 million and, in the process, showing that vodka is still the big beast of the backbar in the Scottish on-trade. Smirnoff parent firm Diageo has plenty to celebrate this year as the company also secured second spot on the High Flyers list with Captain

Morgan Spiced as well as seventh place with its premium gin brand Tanqueray. Kopparberg’s podium position on the High Flyers list also seems to show that the Scottish pub-goer’s love affair with Swedish fruit cider continues. Things get a bit beery further down the table as craft beer brands continue to make their mark in the Scottish on-trade. Innis & Gunn will be pleased with the performance of its lager and will no doubt hope that success continues as the company gets used to life in Perth following its purchase of the Inveralmond Brewery in April of this year. Scottish craft beer stalwarts Williams Bros and Brewdog continue to grow at an impressive rate, with High Flyer entries for Williams’ Caesar Augustus and Joker IPA beers and arguably Brewdog’s best known brand, Brewdog IPA. Strong performances from Mexican beers Corona, Sol and American witbier Blue Moon show there’s still demand for quality from across the Atlantic, while C&C Group can be pleased its Heverlee project has been an unqualified success since launching in 2013.
