Money talks. But are you listening? Traditional funding is not always the best option for operators in the licensed trade. Fortunately, there are alternatives available

T

HE pressure is on for licensed trade operators to provide more of a complete experience for their customers beyond being ‘just a pub’. Unfortunately, this costs money. Over the last few years, as traditional banks reduced the level of funding available for small businesses, a number of new funders entered the market offering a range of financial products as an alternative to traditional bank finance. However, recent research carried out by the National Association of Certified Finance Brokers indicates that close to 50% of small businesses are not aware or

are not taking advantage of this shift in the finance world. Bank finance may not always meet the needs of licensed trade operators so it is essential these operators broaden their knowledge of what financial products are out there and make the best decision for their business and what they are trying to achieve. The Daily Telegraph recently reported that traditional bank overdrafts are disappearing and this will have a significant effect on licensed trade businesses, especially when cash flow is down.

A cash advance, as offered by Liquid Finance, is an ideal replacement and can be used to plug seasonal cash flow gaps. Licensed trade operators should speak to their broker, their peers, and other bodies such as the local chamber of commerce or Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) office. OT everyone loves whisky, and for years many bars have struggled to offer customers something that comes close in terms of the complexity and variety of flavours that whisky offers. However, on the back of a recent boom which has seen small-batch distillers pop up all over the country, gin has emerged as a viable alternative. Gin production has much in common with whisky, in terms of the methods and equipment used, and it can be produced faster making it more affordable both to produce and to

drink. People have really taken to gin in recent years because it offers the complexity of aged spirits and is seen as far more ‘democratic’ – that is, there aren’t so many conventions attached to the consumption of gin and it isn’t so gendered as other drinks. It’s also a versatile spirit, which can be enjoyed in a variety of ways beyond the Martini or G&T. Furthermore, consumers are said to be tiring of the tendency towards homogenising the customer experience – the new desire is for traceability and story.

No time to waste in sorting collections The majority of outlets now have to arrange collection of food waste. But recycling is about more than compliance - it can pay dividends

W

ITH further food waste regulations having come into force on January 1, it is more important than ever that licensed premises recycle efficiently in order to reap the benefits and avoid penalties. The most recent changes mean that the threshold at which food waste must be separated for collection has been drastically reduced from 50kg to 5kg. Regulations state that businesses, apart from those in rural areas, are required to segregate paper, card, plastic, metal, glass and food from general waste. In the Scottish licensed trade, the

majority of sites will prepare and serve food, meaning most licensed premises require food waste collections. Understanding food waste recycling can help businesses avoid hefty landfill charges and compliance fines. The landfill tax has been increased to £84 per tonne of waste, therefore recycling more efficiently can save a business a lot of cash – another powerful incentive to encourage recycling. Businesses that do not comply with food waste regulations risk incurring fines of up to £10,000. But help is at hand. Keenan Recycling provides an
