CITB aims to fill new senior role THE Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has started recruiting for a new Industry Relations Director to boost sector engagement at a time of "critical change". The new role is being introduced during a period when firms face challenges including Brexit-related economic uncertainty, an overhaul of skills policy and further education, and the Apprenticeship Levy. "The CITB said the new director will lead on engagement with employers and federations across Britain. Steve Radley, policy director at CITB said, "At a time of major change, we need to work effectively with the whole industry, from the smallest firms to the biggest. "This means putting even more effort into hearing employers' views, helping them navigate the changing environment, and making clear how a modernised CITB will help them get the skills they need. An appointment is expected later this year.

Terex in key appointment JON Beckley has been named national accounts relationship manager at Terex Construction's UK manufacturing facility. Jon has worked with the Terex Group for 17 years within sales and customer development. His new role will involve managing Terex's national client portfolio, developing strong relationships with existing accounts and supporting equipment requirements. Paul Macpherson, sales and marketing director of Terex's Coventry-based manufacturing facility said, "As a highly experienced professional with meticulous product knowledge, I'm confident that Jon's commitment to delivering exceptional customer service will be second to none." Jon said, "Moving to my new role...is an excellent opportunity, allowing me to develop existing customer relationships and forge new ones with leading construction businesses right across the industry."

Thrilling crane selfie sets the bar high! A Hewden crane has helped capture what the firm believes to be the "world's tallest selfie". The hire company used its 70-tonne Tadano crane for the shot of hundreds of revellers at CarFest North in Cheshire. Hewden said it mounted a remote controlled GoPro camera to the tip of its 68 metre tall crane mast in order to take the amazing snap. Jeff Schofield, sales director at Hewden Events, said, "CarFest is a fantastic family event, which helps raise money for Children In Need. This was a great way for us to get involved and use our equipment in a fun and engaging way. The picture was amazing. I'm just glad nobody blinked."

Buy-out at plant group MTS Nationwide Limited, which has a depot in Cumbernauld, has been acquired via a management buy-out. The plant hire and sales provider for the Doosan Bobcat range of equipment operates throughout Scotland and the north of England and has an ÂŁ8 million turnover. The Wakefieldheadquartered firm will now be led by husband and wife Iain and Sarah Black, and Matthew Watson. Current managing director, Peter Watson, will move into the role of chairman for a pe-

riod of time. Iain Black said, "Peter and the whole team at MTS have done a superb job over the years and we look forward to growing and developing the business with our existing and new clients." MTS was founded more than 25 years ago, starting out as a supplier of welding, fume extraction and pipework equipment into the petrol chemicals sector before expanding into new markets including construction and plant hire.

Report cites concerns over Scotland’s roads network SCOTLAND'S roads network requires "urgent action" according to a new report from Audit Scotland. The report claims the proportion of council-maintained roads classed as being in an acceptable condition has remained around 63% since 2011/12. According to Audit Scotland, councils' spending on maintenance fell by 14% over the same period. Transport Scotland maintains motorways and key trunk routes where spending has fallen by 4% since 2011/12. The report said the proportion of these roads in an acceptable condition has dropped from 90% to 87% over the same period. Audit Scotland said proper road maintenance is "vital" for economic prosperity and safety. Douglas Sinclair, accounts commission chair said, "The state of our roads is a major concern for the public. Surveys show that they remain dissatisfied, despite these concerns being flagged up in our two previous reports. Their voice needs to be listened

to. Councils face increasing pressures and challenges but progress in developing a shared services approach for roads has been disappointingly slow. They can and should collaborate much more to secure better value for money." COSLA (the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) said the fact the report shows the quality of local roads has been main-

tained should be seen as a success. Councillor Stephen Hagan said, "The reality of the situation is that Scotland's councils have done a good job with less resource in keeping the roads to a decent standard. "It is clear that some councils, despite the financial challenges, have chosen to invest in road quality while others, for perfectly valid reasons, have cho-

sen to spend scarce resource on other vital services. However, simply measuring pounds spent on roads maintenance is a poor proxy measure for quality – something which the report admits.” A Scottish Government spokesperson said, "Few people living in Scotland could fail to have noticed the significant investment currently being made in Scotland's trunk road network – with major improvements set to reduce journey times and support economic growth. "Since 2007, £6.5 billion has been invested to help ensure it operates efficiently and in the last year, 378 lane-km of trunk road carriageways have been improved or strengthened. Audit Scotland recognises that the vast majority of the network, 87%, is in an acceptable condition. This has been reflected in our most recent customer survey, where the number of people satisfied with the condition of trunk roads has increased by 5% since last year.”

Kobelco targets new Generation KOBELCO has announced its latest Generation 10 specialist earthmoving and construction excavator is available from the firm's European dealers. The company said the 30-ton SK300LC-10 is designed to provide "exceptional" low emissions. The machine complies with Stage 4 exhaust emissions regulations and is powered by a Hino turbo-charged 7.68-litre engine. Kobelco added that the upper deck/cabin profile mirrors the SK350LC-10 and provides operators with easy access to the engine compartment for daily checks and servicing needs. The cabin is described as "spacious and accommodating" with features including the latest media unit and air-con deliv-

ery vents. Control levers are said to have a lighter-feel. Peter Stuijt, Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe product marketing manager said, "The SK300LC-10 is the first Kobelco excavator to be introduced into the strong and expanding 30-ton class of the heavy excavator market and is in direct response to demand from our growing dealer network. "The SK300LC-10's ability to deliver work performance of a higher class of machinery with exceptional working efficiency and reduced operator costs is typical of Kobelco design, as are the highly regarded levels of reliability, operator comfort and Kobelco service." Brexit shock leads to slump in confidence Stakeholders want assurances over major projects CONFIDENCE among Scotland's builders has slumped to a three-year low in the wake of the UK's decision to leave the European Union, according to new research. There was a drop of 22 points to MINUS 19 in the latest Scottish Construction Monitor, a quarterly survey of the membership of the Scottish Building Federation (SBF). Survey responses were collected during June and respondents were given the chance to update their rating following the outcome of the referendum. Vaughan Hart, SBF managing director said, "General uncertainty about the economic outlook has prompted concern that investment decisions could be postponed indefinitely. "If the current economic volatility is sustained over a longer period of time, the UK Treasury may be forced to take evasive action come the time of the autumn statement with a knock-on impact on the Scottish Government's budget and on local government funding. "There is also a more general concern that the process of negotiating the UK's withdrawal from the European Union could result in paralysis within Government that means important priorities such as the delivery of more housing, the development of skills, training and apprenticeships and critical improvements to the

country's infrastructure risk being sidelined. "On behalf of the SBF's membership and the wider construction sector, I would seek reassurance from ministers that it will maintain a focus on policies that support the construction industry at this challenging time – and critically that help to deliver sustainable employment within the industry." Civil engineering contractors made a similar call on government ministers to "re-establish their commitment" to major national construction projects. CECA (Civil Engineering Contractors Association) said ministers should "proceed with caution" following the EU vote. Marie-Claude Hemming, CECA's head of external affairs said, "The UK must act to secure its economy, but growth will only be delivered if supported by world-class infrastructure. "CECA therefore calls on ministers to now to first stabilise Government, then re-establish their commitment to the projects outlined in the National Infrastructure Plan, most notably HS2 and a third runway at Heathrow in order to maintain economic confidence, following such a substantial change in the UK's relationship with the European Union and the rest of the world." Rob Oliver, CEO of the Construction Equipment

Association (CEA), said most of the organisation's members will be "surprised and disappointed" by the UK's decision to leave the European Union. He added, "International companies will have to make some key strategic decisions on future investment in the UK and our exporter members will have to contend with exchange rate volatility which is already impacting on the CEA's overseas trade promotion programme. "Our partners within CECE I know are deeply disappointed by the turn of events but the CEA remains committed to continue to work with CECE as future access to the EU market remains pivotal." The Mineral Products Association (MPA) adopted a neutral stance in the run-up to the vote and has now initiated a review of the "implications and consequences" of Brexit.

MPA chief executive Nigel Jackson said, "With a number of major and overdue decisions pending on high profile transport and energy projects... and increasing concerns about the pace of delivery of planned infrastructure this is no time to lose determination or focus. "Key strategic initiatives such as the Northern Powerhouse must remain high on the Government's agenda. "We will be working with partners and stakeholders to make sure that the Government is made aware of the key priorities for our industry going forward and ensure that there is a rational and objective review of future regulation. "We are not convinced that any objective evaluation of EU 'red tape' has been undertaken and certainly no informed assessment of 43 years of transposition of EU regulation

into UK law. "We believe that it will not be easy, quick or even desirable to try and unpack the current corpus of regulation without knowing what will supersede it. "It is often UK interpretation and implementation that is more of a problem than EU regulation and the distinction needs to be clear. "The vital role technical product standards and design codes play should not be overlooked and illustrates how the UK will need to stay involved in European organisations regardless of the eventual shape of our new relationship. "We would also urge the Government and the EU to think creatively and innovatively to enable the UK to balance access to the single market with proportionate and sufficient free movement of labour to help fill our skills gap."

Kubota enjoys last laugh with historic milestone When mini-excavators were first introduced to the British market in the 1970s, some scoffed at the concept. As Kubota celebrates its 50,000th excavator sale in the UK and Eire, Project Plant's Gary Moug speaks to long-time dealer Young Plant Sales about the brand's impressive success KUBOTA UK announced earlier this year that it had sold its 50,000th excavator in the British and Irish market. Half of those machines have been purchased in the past ten years alone, with the brand being particularly well known on these shores for mini-excavators. It's all a far cry from the early days of the late 1970s when workers in the construction industry often poured scorn at the idea of using a mini-digger. In fact, in 1979 just 41 Kubota machines in total were sold. It took five years to reach the 1000 mark. By the late 1980s, the sector had started to realise what the machines were capable of and around 1000 models were sold annually. By 1998, Kubota had sold its 10,000th machine in the UK and Ireland, and this figure rose to 25,000 by 2006. Stirling-based Young Plant Sales has been with Kubota on every step of the journey. The company's founder, Tom Young, signed a

deal in May 1979 to become one of the first Kubota dealers in the UK. 37 years later, the firm has sold over 6000 of the machines and is now the longest-serving dealer.

Tom's son, Brian, the current managing director of Young Plant Sales, recalled the initial difficulty in selling mini-excavators to a sceptical Scottish market. "The mini-diggers were met with derision," Brian told Project Plant. "We initially had one machine in the range – the KH10, which had a very square box cab and a fixed boom at right angles on the front. You could slide the boom from one side of the cab to the other. It wasn't very easy to work but it did the job. You could dig hard up against a wall on either side. "Nobody had seen a mini-digger before. The smallest tracked excavator anyone was operating was probably a 10.5 tonne Priestman. I had no experience at all of selling any kind of equipment and the

day I started, my dad handed me a brochure on the KH10 and told me to go out and sell it. Off I went in my van and went banging on doors without having a clue who could be a potential customer and without having had any product or sales training in the slightest. "I just started driving around building sites and industrial estates looking for people I thought might want to buy a mini-digger. I ended up on a lot of sites where people took the mickey mercilessly out of me for selling a "Dinky toy" or "Tonka truck". I was told to go away and come back with a "real" machine. "The going was very tough. We bought four machines from Continued on p8

news feature Continued from p6 Kubota in the first year. We only retailed two of those. One we kept as a demonstrator and one was a brand new stock machine. The very first one went to a company in Aberdeen and the second went up to Shetland." Brian said the turning point was offering customers a free trial. Once they saw the machines in action, any notion of them being glorified toys was long forgotten. Brian explained, "The way we got it to work in the end was to put the machines out on site and give people a free demonstration. When they came to talk about hiring, because they all thought it was a toy, we would agree to charge by the metre rather than the hour because we knew it was a very capable digger. "Once people did give them a trial on site, it totally changed their opinion of the machines and we started to build on limited success, which grew over the years to the point where we sold 760 to our best customer in 2007." The Kubota dealership has been a huge success story for Young Plant, who exhibited a specialedition gold KX-71 machine, created to mark the 50,000th sale, at ScotPlant earlier this year. As well as the machines, Young Plant also stock a substantial amount of Kubota spare parts and accessories. "The machines are extremely

KH20L and KH28L on Barra in the Outer Hebrides

reliable," Brian added. "Kubota make most of the components themselves. They are the biggest compact diesel engine manufacturer in the world by a country mile. Their engines are extremely reliable and their diggers are extremely reliable. "First and foremost they have reliability. They then have incredibly productive and smooth hydraulic systems, so the operators love them. And because they're rugged, they hold their value very well. "The operators like them, the owners and contractors like them because they get the job done with minimum fuss and the investment pays for itself in terms of what it's done and how much they can be sold for second hand."

The original KH10 at this year's Hillhead exhibition

A sporting chance RUGBY fans will see Kubota's logo on the back of the Northampton Saints' shirts for the next two seasons after a new sponsorship deal was agreed with the Aviva Premiership club. Dave Roberts, Kubota’s managing director said, "When we joined forces with the Saints for the 2015/16 season, it was the first time ever that Kubota UK had carried out sponsorship with a top flight sports team. "Based on the success of this partnership, we decided to take this to the next level for the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons and become an elite sponsor.

"There are many similarities between the goals of Kubota UK and those that the Saints have, not least a drive for excellence and a desire to lead our respective fields. "Rugby in general is also a much loved sport for many of our dealers and endusers operating in the agricultural, groundcare and construction sectors and with our engine OEM customers. We are therefore delighted to be continuing our support for the club and look forward to building a mutually beneficial future in which we both achieve our aims."

The Wright stuff Fraser Rummens meets the Scottish demolition contractor benefiting from the first Hyundai HX140 L excavator in Europe Kris Wright

GREENOCK-based demolition contractor Chris Wright & Sons recently took delivery of Europe's first Hyundai HX140 L excavator. The machine, which made its UK debut at this year's ScotPlant exhibition, was supplied by Stirling-based Young Plant Sales. "We bought two Hyundai 220s previously and decided that we needed a smaller one," explained Kris Wright, of Chris Wright & Sons, speaking at a demolition project in Govan, Glasgow. "We've had a great response to the new machines from our operators and we've had good service from Young Plant so we thought we'd go for it. "We've got a range of machines, from 14 tonne, 22 tonne, 32 tonne and the current 13 tonne was a bit out-dated so we needed an upgrade. "It's for compact jobs where you haven't got a lot of room but you still need the strength of a bigger machine – it's still quite powerful." The machine's cab features an 8-inch interactive touchscreen cluster monitor that includes a haptic remote control. Kris said, "The Hyundai cabs are good; they're quite big and have all sorts of gadgets in them. "There is a camera on the front, back and sides of the machine and they work with each other.

"You can watch one individually or all four at the same time and they've set up a system where it uses all four of them and you can actually get a bird's eye view and when the machine is swinging you can see what it is going near‌in other words, there'll be no excuses for hitting things!" The HX140 L has been kitted out with the necessary extras to make it suitable for demolition. Kris explained, "It's a full demolition spec machine. The extras include extra hydraulics and a grab attachment that lets the machinery spin. It also includes a bracket for a manual attachment. "There are ram protectors and underneath you've got extra thick belly plates. You've got the boxing ring (guardrails) and the demolition cage and underneath again, at the very bottom, you've got thick, thick plates." The HX140 L is the only machine being used for the firm's current contract. Kris explained, "Today, the job is a steel cladded building with brick walls and sides, with a steel frame. "The plan is to take the steel cladding off, knock the brick walls in and we use the cutting equipment to knock the steel beams down, clear it all away and then we break up the slab, clear the site and that's it." Chris Wright & Sons was founded by Chris Wright in 2005, with sons Kris, Thomas and

Shaun taking on roles in the company. "We started off as a plant hire company," Kris said. "We started getting a lot of questions asking if we could demolish this or that and eventually it grew to be more of a demolition company. "We're hoping to branch out, we like the demolition and we want to keep it going," he added.

interview Stephen Grieve

Getting to know... NINE years ago Stephen Grieve sold his car for £5000 and invested the money in spare parts for the construction industry. The rest, as they say, is history. Initially working out of his garage, Stephen founded SCG Supplies. The Hamilton-based company has since become one of Scotland’s largest independent suppliers of spare and wear parts for a range of sectors including recycling, crushing and screening. SCG is a dealer for Bruce Engineering and recently took on the Portafill, Telestack and Screenpod products too. Stephen told Project Plant about the decision to branch out on his own, the ‘advice’ which drives him on and a lifelong love of Motherwell Football Club.

Q) WHAT'S YOUR BACKGROUND? A) When I left school I was training to be a carpet fitter. I got a second interview with Komatsu and they called a couple of days later to offer me a job as an apprentice parts operative. I was out at work so my dad took the phone call and accepted on my behalf. When I arrived home that night, I told my dad I enjoyed what I was doing as a carpet fitter – it was hard graft but we got to go to the pub at lunchtime which I thought was fantastic! But he knew what was the better path and it was definitely the best decision my dad's ever made for me! I stayed at Komatsu for four-and-a-half years. I was then approached by Powerscreen to run their after-sales in Scotland. I worked there for six years before I spotted a gap in the market to work for myself. I'd just got married and taken on a big mortgage so it was a bit crazy. But when you do something for somebody else and can see the profit that's there, you tend to think you can do that yourself. I knew all the suppliers. I knew everyone in the industry. So I took the plunge, sold my car and invested the cash in spare parts.

Q) WHAT'S THE HISTORY OF SCG? A) The business was founded in 2007. It was formed in my bedroom and garage. My garage was full of the first parts I bought, mainly fast moving stuff like rollers and couplings. I thought I'd be working from home for a year or two but that only lasted a few months as I started to get cabin fever. I managed to get my first unit in a Hamilton business park in November 2007 and took on more stock. It became apparent that I couldn’t do it all myself and needed another pair of hands so Paul Thorne, who I'd worked with before, came on board and we became partners in the company. Then Michael Hendry (UK sales manager) became involved. We went from strength to strength and ran out of space so had to get another bigger unit within the same industrial park. Everything spiralled from there. Today, primarily we're still a spare parts company. We provide spare parts for crushing and screening plants and for many types of heavy plant machinery. We're also dealers for Bruce Engineering. And we're now going a stage further by selling products from Screenpod, Telestack and Portafill. For years I've wanted to sell equipment. We've had offers from numerous people but we never thought it was quite right. But these guys fit our bill. They're like us. Portafill's a family company. The stuff they produce is second to none. That's what we look for in anything we do. We never scrimp on quality. Q) HOW DO YOU STAND OUT AS A BUSINESS? A) We sweat the small stuff. We go that little bit extra where maybe a bigger corporation won't. We provide a personal touch – custom-

ers can contact us at 10pm at night and if we can help them, we will. I've been on the phone to companies in Australia at midnight. Q) WHAT'S BEEN SCG'S PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS? A) We’re still here. When I started, the sector was going on a downward spiral. Even during the recession, we increased our turnover and profit. The downturn helped us in a way because people were keeping machines for longer and repairing them rather than replacing them. The first ScotPlant was a proud moment. I had a van and a pasting table. Now we take a huge stand at the show. Only recently when we were looking to book rooms for ScotPlant and Hillhead, did I take time to consider that we’re now a team of eight. That was a pretty proud moment. Q) WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? A) We're looking to bring new products to the market (through the deals with Screenpod, Telestack and Portafill). We'll always be an Continued on p14

Continued from p12 after-market spare parts company. That will always be our core business but we see these products as being a fairly substantial add-on. It's a big commitment for us. We're looking for bigger premises – between an acre and an acre-and-a-half. We're well down the line with that and looking to get bigger premises very, very soon. 25-35% of the business will be machinery probably once we're up and running. Maybe even more, it just depends how successful we will be. We'll need more staff too. We might need another salesperson, we'll definitely need service personnel and we'll need more office staff as well. Q) ANY FUNNY ANECDOTES? A) One of the things that sticks in my mind is that when I first started with Komatsu, I had to get used to all the accents. Being from Hamilton, I was a Central Scotland kind of guy, used to the Glaswegian and Lanarkshire tongue. A couple of weeks into my apprenticeship I got a call from what can only be described as a 'Hector Brocklebank' engineer from the north of Scotland who said he was looking for a 'hydraulic pimp'. I was really struggling to understand what he was saying and repeated 'hydraulic pimp' back to him. My supervisor started laughing so I put the customer on hold. My supervisor said he was asking about a hydraulic 'pump'! That stuck with me for years.

because people aren't paying them. If you're not getting paid, or if you're getting strung out for 90 or 120 days, you've still got to pay your people and your suppliers. We're lucky that we've got a lot of good trading terms with our suppliers. Q) BEST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED? A) It wasn't exactly advice but the best motivation I ever received came just before setting up SCG. Someone told me that I wouldn’t last five minutes in the industry and he'd make sure of that. That put fire in my belly to do the best I could. We're nearly in our tenth year now and we’ve proved a lot of people wrong. Q) HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? A) Spending time with our two kids – Amber (2), who was born in the midst of the Hillhead show in 2014 and Cooper (5), who's named after Motherwell legend Davie Cooper. Football's my main passion. I'm a huge Motherwell fan and we do quite a lot with the club in terms of sponsorship. I also run an under-13s football team with the Motherwell kit man. I go to as many Motherwell and Scotland games as I can. We're in the SFA Business Club and do a lot of work with them too. Q) WE'VE SEEN YOU EXHIBITING AT BOTH SCOTPLANT AND HILLHEAD THIS YEAR.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE THESE KIND OF TRADE SHOWS? A) For us they're massively important. You get to put a face to the name on the phone every day. I can't get out the office as much as I'd like to. I'm tied to the desk most days. When you get to the shows, you get to show your wears and spares. The two shows we've done this year have been fantastic successes for us. We're also going to be doing the Black Isle Show for the first time, which I'm looking forward to. The north of Scotland market is one we're really looking to penetrate. Q) WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES YOU'VE SEEN? A) Competition for business is fiercer than ever. More and more spare parts companies have opened up on the back of the recession, with people thinking they can make a fast buck. But you've got to have the knowledge, you've got to have the supply chain and you've got to have the spare parts sitting on the shelf to be able to back that up. Q) WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE ABOUT SCG? A) That we have a team of people who have worked for major dealers. Also, not many people know what SCG stands for. It's my initials - Stephen Campbell Grieve.

Q) IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D CHANGE ABOUT THE INDUSTRY? A) In an ideal world I'd love it if everybody just paid everybody in 30 days. That way, everybody could do what they want to do and service would get better. Cash is King at the end of the day in our game. We have a lot of stock here. If needed to be, we could increase stock and put more on the shelf. Nine times out of ten in this industry if a company goes down it's not because they're not busy enough, it's Project Plant August/September 2016

Six of the best for Interlift

Mud, glorious mud! THE 5th annual JCB Mud run raised over £55,000 for the NSPCC. More than 2500 participants from countries including Singapore, Germany and France braved this year's course on land near the plant giant's Rocester HQ in Staffordshire. Since the event was first staged in 2012, more than £230,000 has been raised. George Bamford, son of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, was among the competitors.

He said, "It's fantastic to see so many people taking part and not only enjoying themselves immensely but raising a fantastic amount of money for the NSPCC as well." George handed over the cheque to the NSPCC along with Zoe Cooper and her family. Zoe's late husband Andy, who worked for JCB, had taken part in every Mud Run before his tragic death in a road accident earlier this year.

INTERLIFT is poised to add an extra six locations throughout the UK following the acquisition of the lifting and materials handling firm by Hewden earlier this year. The business currently has depots in Glasgow, Hull and Middlesbrough. The new plans will see Interlift "extend its offering" to Hewden sites in Grangemouth, Newcastle, Immingham, Leeds, Bedford and Wokingham Kevin Chalmers, operations director, lifting solutions at Interlift said, "In layman terms, Interlift's business is really about what happens under the hook. "It's no secret that Hewden has invested significantly on its cranes and lifting business this year, including an £11.5m order for Tadano Cranes. Our range of products support and compliment that investment perfectly."

Labourer hurt by Demolition firm in three tonne roller the dock over injury A court has heard how a 26-year-old labourer sustained broken bones when he was crushed by a road roller in west Yorkshire. The worker sustained several breaks to his right leg tibia and fibula bones along with burns to his right hand and an open fracture of the index finger on the same hand when the three tonne vibrating roller he was using slid down a steep incline and pinned him beneath it. The incident occurred in November 2015 at Quantum Exhibitions & Displays Ltd in Hipperholme.

The firm has been fined £70,000 with £4,139.50 costs by Calderdale Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Speaking after the hearing, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Jacqueline Ferguson said, "There was no vehicle restraint or edge protection system in place to prevent vehicles from approaching the unstable edge of the embankment with the foreseeable risk of the vehicle overturning. "This was a serious accident that could have proved fatal."

A construction firm has been fined £40,000 after a father of four suffered injuries when he was struck by a 40-tonne excavator. Liverpool Crown Court heard that Complete Demolition Ltd was working on a project to demolish a school on a site at Ellesmere Port to make way for a new leisure centre. The company was prosecuted by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found arrangements ensuring pedestrians and vehicles were separated were "inadequate". The HSE said there was insufficient control of workers on the site. The incident occurred in November 2013 while the site was being cleared. The driver of a Complete Demolition skip wagon was at-

tempting to reverse the skip into an area that was already occupied by the excavator but was manoeuvring out of the way. A worker was standing in the same area as the skip wagon and excavator and as the machine moved it knocked him to the ground where its tracks ran over his left foot. The 45-year-old has since undergone several operations to rebuild his foot and he is still in constant pain and unable to work. Complete Demolition Ltd pleaded guilty to breaches of Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Regulation 13(2) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, and was fined £40,000 with £7,246.95 costs.

MILLER SCOOPS PRESTIGIOUS CONSTRUCTION NEWS AWARD Earthmoving attachments manufacturer, Miller UK, has been recognised for its commitment to innovation after winning the Commercial Innovation of the Year award at the Construction News Awards. The award was won in conjunction with plant hire firm, Hewden, after the two companies demonstrated genuine collaboration to create an enhanced hydraulic breaker, which beat eight other finalists in the highly competitive category. Miller faced a challenging brief set by Hewden. Within just three months, Hewden needed a product which would effectively reduce the number of breaker variants required for excavators and backhoes from 1.5 to 20 tonnes and reduce the number of head brackets needed to suit different machines. Full automatic lubrication across all models as well as the ability to recover stolen

or lost assets was also a must. The judges said: “This is a suite of innovative solutions that addresses all the issues Hewden had. Miller has got velocity and agility; it has picked up the challenge and said, ‘Yes, we’ll have a go at that’, and it has done it in three months, which is remarkable.” Miller’s hydraulic breaker was designed to incorporate three key

features to address each aspect of Hewden’s brief, and in so-doing set it apart from anything else on the market last year. The combination of an innovative top bracket designed to fit multi OEM machines and sizes, a tracker device to prevent loss or theft, which has already resulted in eight stolen breakers being successfully recovered, and an automated

lubrication system to extend the life of the breaker and maximise tool uptime, ticked all the boxes for both companies and impressed the judging panel. Brendan Quill, sales and marketing director at Miller, said: “I couldn’t be more proud of the way the whole team worked together to tackle Hewden’s brief and create a genuinely innovative product. To be recognised as having produced the industry’s best commercial innovation of the year is a true testament to their determination, innovative thinking and teamwork, and is a huge achievement. “As a company, we constantly look to the future and place a great deal of importance on investing in research and development so that we can continue to drive innovation and offer our forward thinking-customers a range of products designed to meet their needs exactly.”

business Dunne Group ceases trading

Breedon in the clear over Hope takeover THE Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has cleared Breedon Aggregates’ £336 million acquisition of Hope Construction Materials. The takeover had been delayed after the CMA outlined potential competition concerns earlier this year relating to some ready-mix concrete (RMX) sites and warned an in-depth merger investigation could take place unless Breedon offered an acceptable solution. In response, Breedon agreed to divest 14 RMX sites to Tarmac and the Concrete Company.

The CMA said it had "accepted the remedy, which it considers appropriate to resolve its concerns". Meanwhile, Breedon said the business is "confident" of meeting 2016 market expectations after announcing its unaudited interim results for the six months ending 30 June 2016. The firm called it an "excellent first-half operating performance" that saw a 2% increase in revenue from £160.5 million in the same period in 2015 to £163 million. Profit before tax has increased 19% to £20.9 million.

BATHGATE-headquartered civil engineering and construction firm The Dunne Group has gone into administration, resulting in the loss of over 500 jobs – 200 of which are in Scotland. The Dunne Group, founded in 2001, operated across the UK and has had major contract wins in recent years. Turnover last year was £74 million and forecast to rise this year to £96 million. Tom MacLennan, Iain Fraser and Geoff Rowley, partners at business advisory firm FRP Advisory have been appointed as joint administrators. Tom MacLennan said, "This is a sad loss for the construction and building industry. The business faced substantial trading losses on some contracts, leading to severe cash flow pressures. Additionally, rapid expansion led to pressure on working capital and a requirement for significant additional funding that was not available." Administrators said the Group's assets and equipment, including cranes, trucks, lifting equipment and excavators will be valued and marketed for sale in due course.

JCB profits dip amid 'difficult' conditions JCB achieved underlying earnings of £214 million in 2015, an £80 million drop from the previous year. Sales turnover was £2.34 billion, down from £2.51 billion, and total machine sales fell from 64,028 to 59,844. JCB CEO, Graham Macdonald, said the company's trading performance in 2015 was "resilient in the face of a further deterioration in market conditions around the world". The company said market conditions in most developing markets in 2015 were "difficult" and growth in North American and European markets was "slower than expected", while there was an overall drop of 14% in the global market for construction equipment. JCB Chairman, Lord Bamford, commented, "In spite of difficult market conditions, we remain positive about the future. "Recent product launches are proving to be very successful, particularly the revolutionary new JCB Hydradig, designed and engineered specifically for use in congested urban environments."

The Hydradig was launched earlier this year

Sunward aims to create Scottish dealer network By Gary Moug THE UK distributor for a major Chinese equipment manufacturer is searching for Scottishbased dealers as part of an expansion into the European market. Sunward Equipment Group, headquartered in Changsha City, makes excavators and other construction machines for a wide range of sectors from mining to the military. The business has had a presence in the UK since September last year and boasts two European warehouses for the supply of spare parts. Sunward UK is the distributor of the Sunward range of civil engineering machinery, including excavators large and small, and claims the machines are steadily gaining a reputation on these shores for quality and reliability. Darren Griffiths, director of Sunward UK, says a dealer network in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is in the process of being established. The company is looking to appoint two dealers in Scotland – one to serve the north of the country and the other to serve the south. Darren told Project Plant, "We're looking for someone who is actually going to go out and sell the machines and back them up by way of service. "We've appointed four dealers in the UK so far and we're looking to build up a network for the whole country. "The machines are Chinese-made and run with Japanese engines including Yanmar

and Kubota. They all come with a three-year, 3000-hour warranty. We have a wide range from 0.8 to 33.5t in stock, ready for sale." Despite being relatively new to the UK market, Darren said early feedback on the Sunward excavators has been wholly positive. "We've sold to a wide range of people," he added. "We've sold to plant hire firms, people doing riverbank work, gravediggers. "Everyone who's bought them is really pleased. The machines work very well, they do exactly what we say they do, operate very well and they're very reliable.

"Sunward in China employs nearly 7000 people. The Group fully understands what it needs to do in the European market. "More spare parts than you could ever possibly need are available as Sunward understands the importance of good quality backup. "We'll probably establish two dealers in Scotland – north and south. Scots like a bargain and these machines are good value for money. I've got great confidence in the product, we just need to appoint the right dealers to express that confidence."

Advertorial

MILLER AND HEWDEN: A POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP Miller UK has long been a supplier to plant hire firm, Hewden, and the two companies have collaborated on a number of occasions to produce innovative new products designed to meet a real market need. Amongst a range of other attachments, Hewden has pioneered the use of Miller’s innovative hydraulic breaker to great effect, making cutting edge technology readily available to consumers who benefit from a product that is tailored to the needs of modern day construction sites. Miller and Hewden work closely during the design and development stage of products such as breakers, buckets, couplers and brackets, bringing together decades of manufacturing expertise and the most upto-date information on the detailed requirements of construction firms and their operatives. Once the products are brought to market, Hewden ensures that Miller’s attachments are utilised to their fullest potential by equipping rental customers with first class customer service and training in how to get the most out of the best groundbreaking products in the industry. Unique products Innovation lies at the heart of Miller and Hewden’s success. It is only by creating products that increase efficiency and save money on site that the two firms have built a reputation for excellence, and no product better exemplifies what can be achieved through their collaborative efforts than Miller’s new enhanced hydraulic breaker. In 2015, Hewden invested £1million in 200 new breakers from Miller, and the company’s faith in the product was based on the role it played in the development of the breaker’s three key innovations. This faith in the product proved justified as it has

since been recognised for a number of industry awards. Adaptability was a major consideration in the design of the breaker. Attachments that can only be used with a limited number of machines create problems on site, as additional investment is required to bring in more equipment, which in turn creates increased risks to worker safety as multiple attachments are used across a fleet of excavators. The Miller hydraulic breaker has a unique hanger at the top of the breaker, which allows the attachment to be fitted to any of Hewden’s excavators, from 1.5 tonnes to 22 tonnes. The hanger allows for quick, easy, safe switching between machines, and has already helped Hewden make significant cost and time savings. Attachments, particularly those offered by hire companies, can prove to be something of a challenge when it comes to maintenance. Operators can find themselves spending almost as much time greasing and lubricating an attachment as they spend actually using it, and this can breed frustration as productivity drops. To avoid this type of issue occurring, Miller’s hydraulic breaker range

has been developed with a self-lubricating system that continually greases the attachment while it is in use. Operators never have to pause to check the attachment or to re-grease it, which not only means maximum uptime and increased productivity, but also boosts worker safety. The third key feature of the Miller hydraulic breaker might just be its most impressive component, and its most vital: each and every Hewden breaker is fitted with a tracker, so if it is lost or stolen it can be located in minutes. Attachment theft has been a bane of the industry in recent years, but a staggering eight breakers have

been recovered as a direct result of the tracker technology to date. This not only saves vast amounts of time and administrative costs, but also the cost that would have otherwise been spent on replacement tools. Hewden estimates that reported attachment theft alone could be costing the industry more than £1m per year, and is calling on the hire industry to follow suit and make trackers standard on all attachment equipment. “Working alongside Miller, we were the first in the industry to introduce tracking devices on our breakers,” said Alex Gadd, attachments manager at Hewden. “More needs to be done and until we’re able to stop the problem completely, the best we can do is deter criminals and help locate the equipment.” A training programme has been carefully devised to enable Hewden staff to fully understand and appreciate all aspects and benefits of the Miller attachment range. This means that as well as being able to use and handle the attachments safely themselves, they can also advise customers accordingly to ensure they get the very best out of products, particularly with regards to the new product ranges.

THE Hire Association Europe and Event Hire Association (HAE EHA) has launched its SafeHire Certification, with the aim of raising industry standards. Several firms in the hire sector, including Speedy, Hire Station, Hirebase and Travis Perkins have already gone through the audit process and are said to reaping the rewards. SafeHire is currently an option for existing HAE

New scheme looks to tackle plant theft Highland firms team up with Police Scotland A new initiative has been launched to help stop construction equipment being stolen from Highland building sites. Construction firms in the region have teamed up with Police Scotland's Highland and Islands branch to form Construction Watch, which aims to reduce crime through information sharing, crime

prevention techniques and the forensic marking of equipment and material. The UK Government estimates construction crime costs the UK economy over £1 billion every year. Nearly £130,000 worth of equipment was stolen from the Inverness area alone between April

2015-2016. One of the partners in the scheme is Invernessbased civil engineering specialist Daviot Group. Brian Davidson, the Group's procurement manager, explained, "Theft of plant or machinery is a matter that affects all civil engineering and construction companies.

"Working with our partners and Police Scotland makes us all stronger, the sharing of information between all stakeholders and introducing crime prevention techniques such as forensic marking of equipment will

only benefit everyone involved and hopefully lead to a reduction in crime rates whilst acting as a strong deterrent to would be criminals." Jim Ferguson, Scottish deputy chair and Highlands and Islands region-

Rollers a 'hot' target for thieves

al chair of Crimestoppers added, "I'm confident we will see reductions in this type of crime in particular when successful prosecutions are brought against those involved in theft from construction sites."

ROLLERS have been identified as a 'hot target' for plant theft criminals, according to new research. AMI Group, which protects over ÂŁ245 million worth of assets across the UK with tracking devices, came to this conclusion following analysis of all its plant theft recoveries so far this year. Peter Stockton, operations director at AMI Group said, "The review we carried out revealed a marked increase in the theft of rollers from both construction sites and customer depots. "This equipment tends to be smaller in size than much of the larger plant machinery so it is easier for criminals to conceal and transport in a panel van. "Thieves may automatically presume that rollers don't have a tracking device fitted so it is an easier option than larger kit which is more likely to have telematics fitted and overt property marking such as CESAR (The Construction & Agricultural Equipment Security and Registration Scheme)."

AMI Group said its plant theft review corresponds with the findings in the latest report issued by PANIU (Plant & Agricultural National Intelligence Unit) which stated that "PANIU is seeing steady increases in the theft of smaller items. Tandem rollers, dumper trucks and the mini excavator remain popular to the criminal networks".

A fresh look Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) has launched a new-look corporate website. The firm has changed the URL to www.hitachicm.eu and said the redesigned site would give visitors "the ultimate online construction machinery experience". "The driving force behind HCME's new-look website was to replicate the look and feel of HCM's (Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd.) global site," explained HCME President Makoto Yamazawa. "Having achieved this, our digital team has then focused on the needs of our European dealers and customers, such as the dynamic content, the creation of a onestop information centre, and an enjoyable and easy viewing experience."

GGR receives huge lift with top award

Wacker Neuson to build new China factory

The contract signing

Co-founder Gill Riley

A lifting solutions firm with a base in Blantyre has won a prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise. GGR Group was established in 1995 by siblings Graeme and Gill Riley, who now hold the posts of chief executive and managing director respectively. The company employs over 100 people across three UK sites in Oldham, Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire and Blantyre, North Lanarkshire. GGR machines have been used on a variety of projects including the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood.

The Queen's Award recognises the firm's business model of working with suppliers in Japan and a network of dealers in Europe and the Middle East to develop a range of lifting solutions. Graeme Riley said, "Architectural styles have changed in recent years, with now more glass and cladding being used externally and internally. That meant there was a gap in the market for small, powerful cranes which

could work in confined spaces. "The Japanese had been using mini cranes for years, but they were virtually unheard of in Europe. By working with our suppliers and network of dealers, we have continued to develop cutting-edge lifting solutions for the European market. One of these is the URW-1006 mini spider crane, which boast 10 tonnes of lifting power but is only two metres wide."

THE Wacker Neuson Group has revealed it is planning to open a new production plant in China. The firm said the facility, which will be located near Shanghai, will initially produce compact excavators for the local market, with further products following. Cem Peksaglam, chief executive officer for Wacker Neuson SE, said, "We are continuing our strategy of internationalisation with this step. "In the largest construction machine market in the world we underline our commitment towards our Chinese customers and trading partners." Construction is planned to be complete by the end of 2017. The Group has sold construction equipment in China for over 20 years.

Simulator helps steer kids towards a future in plant

Gary Moug reports on AMD's newest addition

Fraser Dykes

DUMFRIES-based AMD Contract Services has invested in a simulator that recreates the controls of a wide range of plant machinery for operator training purposes. The firm has been taking the machine around local schools to give youngsters a taste of life as a plant operator in a safe and realistic environment. AMD hopes the simulator will encourage school pupils to give serious consideration to a career in the plant industry and help address some of the skills short-

ages the sector is currently experiencing. Duncan Campbell, AMD's sales and business development representative, said, "The simulator has ten different machines on it including excavators, wheeled excavators, telehandlers, articulated dump trucks, combine harvesters and tower cranes. "There's a different range of exercises for each machine and it also includes industry specific testing like CPCS. "You can pretty much simulate whatever you need.

"We've been taking it around local schools and academies, trying to educate younger people who are unsure about what to do, about plant operating jobs. "We've worked quite closely with Lockerbie Academy. Their headteacher's always on the phone saying they've got someone interested and asking if we've got any apprenticeships coming up. "The feedback we've had from boys and girls of all ages has been really positive. Some who

had never thought about a career as a plant operator are really keen. "The controls are exactly the same as the real-life models. When you dig into the ground and the machine moves forward a wee bit, the simulator moves forward too. You can change the sensitivity, speed it up, slow it down." The simulator also generates a report every time someone uses it, informing them exactly how they've performed. AMD director Fraser Dykes, who's also the president of the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA), made the decision to purchase the simulator following a demonstration from the Swedish-based manufacturer Tenstar at an SPOA event. He explained, "I bought it the same night. Companies are hiring it for open days and such

like. We've had it at the Help for Heroes recovery centre in Edinburgh, and we're working with Scottish Prison Service to try and get involved there to help with rehabilitation.

"Construction has always been seen as the bottom line. If you didn't go to university or college or couldn't get a job on a farm or a supermarket, you went into construction.

"We're trying to show kids that there's a technical edge to construction and what they can achieve there. "We're getting tremendous feedback on it."

Workers urged to speak out over mental health RESEARCH has found "very real concerns" about the rates of mental health problems amongst construction workers. A survey involving members of the union UCATT revealed 64% of respondents said they are suffering from stress. 76% said they had at some point suffered stress in the workplace while 30% had taken time off work due to stress. Brian Rye, UCATT acting general secretary, said, "What this survey shows us is that we have a significant issue affecting thousands of us in our daily lives, and which degrades our lives to such an extent we take time off work." With regards to mental health, 35% of respondents said they were suffering from a mental illness or had suffered from a mental illness. Of these members 44% had taken time off due to mental health issues but 75% had not raised their problems with management.

A practical and written test will follow, with a required pass mark of 80%. Engcon said, "Tiltrotator Training covers the core elements of a tiltrotator and its use and has been specifically developed by Engcon in association with NPORS to ensure operators understand how to use the system

correctly and safely. "The practical training and test is designed to enable the learner to appreciate, and access the benefits of tiltrotators, including off-centre digging and reduced machine movement, forming 'V' type ditches, angled batters and returns and grading. "There will also be an introduction to some of the many attachments that are becoming more commonplace on tiltrotator-equipped excavators, such as grading beams, sorting grabs, pallet forks and compactors. "In addition to the practical session, operators will also be required to demonstrate an understanding of the issues specific to tiltrotator use including attachment selection, causes of instability when using a tiltrotator, safety checks/signals, and the regulations relating to lifting operations and equipment."

Powering through Exc@v8 managing director, Tom Lomax, tells Project Plant's Fraser Rummens why the M515 Menzi-Master has been wowing customers Exc@v8, the Kendal-based UK and Irish dealer for Menzi Muck excavators, has launched the M515 Menzi-Master – a 14.5-tonne crawler excavator the firm is calling a "go anywhere, do anything" machine. Described by Exc@v8 as "the world's most powerful 14-tonne excavator," the M515 Menzi-Master features a 157bhp Tier IV Duetz 4-cylinder diesel engine and is said to have up to 70% more hydraulic power available than the nearest competitor in its class. While Menzi Muck excavators have traditionally been based around a wheeled chassis, the new tracked model was developed in response to clients' re-

quests for an LGP solution. "It's the absolute sheer power that strikes everybody instantly," Tom Lomax, managing director at Exc@v8, told Project Plant. "Everywhere we've sent it, they've been absolutely blown away by how much power it's got, yet how smooth and precise it is. It'll lift nine tonnes at three metres and 2.4 tonnes at full reach. It's got a 97% climb ratio, which means it is way in excess of anything else in that class. "It has a hydraulic telescopic undercarriage, you can fit pads up to 1800mm, it's got the longest blade travel in its class and it will level itself on 14-and-a-half degrees. We also offer a 4.9m

long undercarriage without a blade where a super LGP solution is required." The M515 can weigh up to 14.5 tonnes, depending on specification, and has 3.8m long tracks with a multi-positional, width adjustable undercarriage that takes the track gauge from 2500mm to a maximum 3500mm when running on 600mm track pads. The machine's expanding undercarriage can also extend each track individually to offer full over-theside lifting capabilities. The machine features a pair of Bosch-Rexroth pumps as standard, allowing for flow rates of up to 200l per minute, and a third Powerline pump can be specified

where a dedicated attachment supply is required. The standard 1.8m extending dipper has a maximum dig depth of 4.32m and a load-over height of 8m. Tom also praised the machine's panoramic cabin, which he described as "an operator's dream". The tilting, fully glazed cab features an air suspended operator's seat, a dashboard with LCD-display and fully adjustable ergonomic joysticks with proportional rocker and hand support. "We've already had them working on hydro schemes in various configurations. It's a mountain machine as well as a bog master, if you configure it correctly," Tom added.

Wick plant firm fined after worker falls from basket HSE investigation uncovers safety failings A lifting and plant hire firm in Wick has been fined for safety failings after a worker suffered serious injuries when he fell from a man riding basket more than three years ago. Wick Sheriff Court heard how Hugh Simpson Limited was contracted to unload Deugro Danmark ships once they had docked at Wick Harbour. Hugh Simpson provided its own equipment for unloading and was in overall charge of the lifting operations. They subcontracted JGC Engineering and Technical Services Limited to remove sea fastenings from the ships' holds. On January 7, 2013 JCG employee, Brian Reid, was lowered into the hold in a man

riding basket lifted by a crane. An employee of Hugh Simpson in charge of lifting operations on the day was on the deck of the ship to communicate with both Mr Reid and the crane operator. Neither the basket nor Mr Reid was visible to the crane operator whilst in the hold of the ship, so he had to rely on communications from the deck. Mr Reid cut one of the sea fastenings and indicated using hand signals that he required the basket to be moved to reach the other fastening. As he began working on it, the basket tipped upside down, throwing him onto the hold floor.

He sustained "multiple" complex fractures to his face and nose and fractured his left hand. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) probe found that the operational plans and risk assessment prepared by Hugh Simpson did not include lifting people in a basket attached to a mobile crane. HSE said the man riding basket was not suitable to be used in conjunction with a crane and should only have been used with a fork lift truck. Hugh Simpson pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 8 of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. The firm was fined ÂŁ26,000.

Investment urged in asphalt plants

HEWDEN has acquired the rental arm of Firefly, a designer and manufacturer of hybrid generators. The move sees several products added to Hewden's portfolio including generators, hybrid units, solar panels, distribution units, cables and lighting solutions. Adrian Murphy, Hewden CEO, said, "Sustainability is no longer a nice to have, but rather a fundamental part of how businesses should run. Hewden is committed to providing the most sustainable solutions possible from the products we hire to the places we operate. "This investment allows us to expand our portfolio of sustainable power products and ensure we deliver on our promise to be the leading on-site solutions provider in the UK."

HUGE investment is needed by British asphalt providers according to BDS Marketing, following research that revealed more than half of currently operating plants in the country are more than 20-years-old. Of these, more than 50% are over 30-years-old. Andy Sales, the report author, explained, "Many of these plants were installed in the 1980s and early 1990s and will need investment to ensure continued operational efficiency. "Our research suggests that 140 asphalt plants are affected, being more than 20-years-old." BDS said the industry has seen a "welcome return to growth" over the past three years with production in 2015 reaching 24 million tonnes. However, output remains below

historical trends. BDS claimed there has been a "significant reduction" in the market in the first quarter of 2016. BDS believes this is a short term trend before recovery towards the end of the year. The consultancy has identified a number of infrastructure projects which will benefit asphalt producers in the future. BDS also found that there are 20% less plants operating today than there were in 2000. Production is increasingly being concentrated at a small number of larger volume sites, they said, with the top five asphalt companies - Tarmac, Aggregate Industries, Hanson, Cemex and Breedon - continuing to represent a significant part of the market. BDS estimates their share at 80%.

A UK first for West Lothian plant hirer MULHOLLAND Plant Services has become the first customer in the country to buy JCB's new 48Z-1 mini excavator, snapping up three of the machines. The West Lothian plant hirer bought the new models, supplied by Scot JCB, as part of a deal which also included eight JCB 86C-1 midi excavators, an 8014 and four 8026 mini excavators. The 48Z-1 is a 4.8-tonne, zero tailswing machine. JCB said key features include 500 hour greas-

ing intervals, improved cab instrumentation, 11% improvement in visibility, a 9% boost to bucket tearout and 5% additional dump height. Steven Mulholland, MPS director said, "We see great potential for these new minis in applications ranging from utilities projects to small civil engineering jobs where larger equipment is not viable. "MPS is proud to be the first to offer them to the market and customer feedback has already

been excellent. Their major appeal is the excellent power, service accessibility, visibility and driver comfort. "Our customers have also

commented that performance is improved on the previous model and control is more refined. It's a far smoother machine to operate with improved hydraulics."

A moment to Take in 20 years of progress Takeuchi UK has come a long way since establishing a UK home in Rochdale, Lancashire in 1996. Gary Moug reports on how the firm has become a major player in the British and Irish plant markets. TAKEUCHI'S distinctive red and grey machines have become a firm feature on UK building sites and a wide variety of projects all over the country. Such is their prominence, in fact, that it may come as a surprise to some to realise Takeuchi's UK venture only started 20 years ago. The Japanese brand has developed an enviable reputation for reliability and quality in a short period of time since the company established a base in

Rochdale, Lancashire in October 1996. A thriving dealer network has helped Takeuchi grow in the UK and firmly establish the company as a major player in a competitive marketplace. Evidence of this lies in the fact Takeuchi UK recently sold its 25,000th machine and the British and Irish market now accounts for a significant share of global sales. The story of Takeuchi dates back to 1963 when a mechanical engineer in Nagano, Japan

called Akio Takeuchi founded the business with a capital investment of just £3000. One of the firm's claims to fame was the invention of the world's first compact mini-excavator in 1971 – the TB1000. The inspiration for the machine is said to have come from a local builder who approached Mr Takeuchi looking for "improved efficiency". The mini-excavator soon replaced the manual bucket and shovel on construction sites all over the world.

In the 1980s, Takeuchi went international with the opening of Takeuchi USA in Atlanta, Georgia and the development of the world's first track loader for the US market, the TL15/TL20. Although Takeuchi machines were already being sold in Europe, the plan to formally promote the brand name in the UK and Ireland materialised in 1996 with the founding of Takeuchi Mfg. (UK) Ltd. news feature Mr Takeuchi with a customer

Continued from p40 network in this part of the world has gradually expanded since then and today numbers more than 30 dealer depots. To meet demand for mini-excavators, Takeuchi opened a depot in Thatcham, Berkshire in 2002 to serve customers in the south of the country. The success story continued in the UK and Ireland, followed by year on year introductions of new excavator machines. Takeuchi's sales come right across the range from 1 to 15 tonne but without doubt the popularity of the 1.5 tonne has proved most significant. This still remains the country's most popular size of mini-digger and Takeuchi "remain no 1" with the TB016 now superseded by the TB216. By 2008, Takeuchi UK had outgrown its original Rochdale

The world's first compact mini-excavator

premises and invested ÂŁ5 million in a 56,000 square foot facility in the town with a massive increased stock capacity. The new base, which is four times larger than the previous one, includes a purpose-built parts and service centre and a training centre. Recent years have seen the introduction of more new machines and innovations including the new 4, 6 and 9 tonne weight class options TB240, TB260 and TB290. Wheeled excavators have got bigger with a 10 tonne TB295W and for a compact short-tail radius machine there's the TB215R or the recently launched micro TB210R. A programme of continuous product improvement has seen replacement models. In the past 12 months a new 3 tonne TB230 was unveiled and the firm says we should look out for the new 15 tonne TB2150 due to arrive later this year.

Tomonori Tamaru has been managing director of Takeuchi in the UK since 2009 having previously worked for Takeuchi in his native Japan. He asserts that it is Takeuchi's product quality that makes all the difference in an established rigorous construction plant market like the UK and Ireland. Here plant managers have high demands but Tomonori said the "reliability and good quality" of the Takeuchi machines meant they were able to make gradual inroads, supported by a "good reputation for service backup". Tomonori explained the expansion of Takeuchi's dealer network across the UK was also pivotal. "The dealers have local strengths, local knowledge," he told Project Plant. "If we tried to do everything ourselves it would be very difficult. Local dealers know the local market very well. The backup is also key. "We knew the product was

Takeuchi UK's Rochdale headquarters

good. (The challenge) was getting the message out to the market. Most of the feedback from customers was really positive. The main feedback was that the machines didn't break! They are reliable and smooth to operate. "The machines are not jerky. You cannot tell that just by specification. We started seeing operators demanding Takeuchi. "Our used machine price is also important. Our machines keep a high residual value – a key factor for the UK market's plant hire companies. Close to 90% of machines we sell are to plant hire companies." The Scottish market has started to embrace Takeuchi machines, particularly in the past decade. Tomonori said the reliability of the products makes them ideal for the Scottish market, where operators are often working in isolated areas and can't afford to have equipment that is regularly breaking down. "Our Scottish market was almost zero when Chris Bushell (UK sales manager) joined in 2005," Tomonori added. "His first task was to develop the Scottish market. JMS (based in Aberdeenshire) was our first appointed dealer in Scotland. (MD Jim Milligan) showed what Scotland can do and we gradually built our dealer network. I can see Scotland is more suitable for Takeuchi. There are more owneroperators." For Tomonori and the small but experienced Takeuchi UK team, the challenge now is to continue Continued on p44

Continued from p42 developing the brand. "We will continue pushing our quality and try to increase our market share, Tomonori added. “We have a newly opened major manufacturing facility in Japan to meet growing global demand. Our parts department is much improved (since changing location in 2008). The size of the building gives us storage that is more suitable for our business. We now can offer more service training in a more professional way." Takeuchi's move to much larger premises couldn't have overlapped at a more difficult time for the plant industry, with the global financial crisis just about

to strike. "It was very, very painful for everybody," Tomonori recalled. "First of all we looked everywhere we could to save costs. Sales were less than half suddenly. People just stopped buying." Tomonori is optimistic about the future but admitted some people in the industry have become "very cautious" since the recession. "People are taking longer to make decisions," he explained. "The other side of the coin is that people are thinking more. Hopefully the result will be a better and more sustainable industry sector and the same mistakes will not be made." Chris Bushell, Takeuchi's UK sales manager, first started selling Takeuchi machines for a dealer in Manchester in 1999. He remembers the difficulties in the early days of trying to establish an as then little-known brand in the market. "People used to say Take-what!" he said. "We just needed to get hire companies and operators familiar with the brand; those early sales certainly took us from zero to hero in a very short space of time. The very first Takeuchi machines sold in Britain (in the early 1980s) were orange and branded as Priestman Mini Mustang. The turning point was when the actual brand Takeuchi (created) a UK location and stocked parts.

Tomonori and the Takeuchi UK team

"Because Takeuchi had been reliant on importers up until that point, there was a stigma that the machines were great but you couldn't get parts. We're well away from that now. Having been involved for a reasonable length of time, I remember when we first went to Scotland. My brief was to set up a dealer network in Scotland. At our first Highland Show, we took a girl to sell our merchandise – hats, jackets, fleeces - and she couldn't give it away! I knew we'd made it when, about four or five years later, the same girl with the same stock had people queuing up to buy it. To achieve that (in such a short space of time), you know you've arrived. Having a dealer network instilled confidence in

the end user." A long-standing Takeuchi dealer is JMS Equipment, who look after the north of Scotland from their base in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. Managing director Jim Milligan says the firm "hasn't looked back" since becoming an official Takeuchi dealer in 2006. "I was fairly familiar with Takeuchi machines as we'd used them ourselves," Jim said. "When I was approached by Chris Bushell to see if we wanted to be a dealer, I said we'd give it a go. I wouldn't sell anything to anybody that I wouldn't buy myself. You'll never buy anything as reliable as a Takeuchi. It's a well run and efficient company. You never get any complaints about their machines." Jim said that whilst most people in Scotland had never heard of the brand, a quick demonstration would quickly make them understand what the machines were capable of. "A lot of folk thought it was a new product at first," he recalled. "I would say 'No, Takeuchi invented the mini-digger!' "It is very difficult (establishing a new brand) but once you got them into the seat, they changed their mind. They're so smooth, powerful machines. Operators just love them. "The first new Takeuchi machine I sold was to a company that refuses to buy anything else. Everything they have is Takeuchi. They've had demonstrations of various machines but nothing has been a patch on them."

A new Doosan DL450-5 wheel loader has been purchased by Tulloch Developments and is proving its worth loading and stockpiling materials at the Staney Hill quarry in Lerwick. The firm bought the machine from Balgownie to replace a Doosan DL400 and is said to also be busy filling the material bins used to supply the quarry's ready mix concrete system.

Tulloch Developments provides a ready mix concrete service to Shetland businesses and the public. George Smith, a director at the firm, explained, "The new machine is a lynchpin for us as it works for extensive periods in both our aggregates production area and in the ready mix concrete plant. "The DL400 was a good performer but

Hill lands hitch and bucket deal HILL Engineering has struck a deal with Birmingham-based civil engineering firm MV Kelly to act as sole supplier of Hill TEFRA couplers and bespoke buckets for the company's fleet of Hitachi excavators. MV Kelly has around 300 Hitachi machines. Doug Curran, MV Kelly's plant manager, explained, "We were recommended to Hill Engineering by Hitachi, who are very familiar with Hill's ability for quality bespoke engineering. "We have specific requirements for our buckets and all are modified to our own specifications."

I have great confidence in the benefits that the DL450-5 Stage IV machine will bring in productivity and the fuel efficiency and reliability of the new Scania engine backed by the excellent support we've always had from Balgownie." The DL450-5 is powered by the Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine and is part of Doosan's 'DL-5' generation of wheel loaders.

Explosive action at famous quarry

AN army bomb disposal team was recently called to Blackhill Quarry in Bramhope, Leeds to carry out controlled explosions on a cache of World War 2 artefacts found during a routine inspection of Leeds University. Craig Morrell, the quarry manager, explained, "The artefacts were deemed too unsafe to be kept at the university

and were transported to the quarry where bomb disposal experts were on hand to carry out six explosions with varying degree of intensity." Blackhill Quarry, owned by Mone Brothers, has featured on a number of popular TV shows over the years including Emmerdale, Heartbeat and A Touch of Frost.

EXHIBITORS HAIL HUGELY SUCCESSFUL SCOTPLANT 2016

29/07/2016 12:09

ScotPlant 2016 cemented the exhibition's reputation for showcasing the very best machines in the industry. With many firms confirming orders were secured on the stands and many more genuine leads obtained to be followed up afterwards, the show was once again a resounding success. Over the next few pages, we look back at the biggest event of the year for Scotland's thriving construction equipment sector.

ScotPlant 2016

"The best exhibition show we can attend" Exhibitors back ScotPlant's 'personal touch' ANOTHER fantastic ScotPlant exhibition is in the books, with many exhibitors quickly declaring this year's event to be an overwhelming success. Unusually great weather helped the build-up run smoothly before visitors were treated to two glorious days of touching, viewing and learning about the latest machines in the marketplace. Once again ScotPlant showed itself to be a trade show where deals are done, with deals aplenty being secured during the weekend of the exhibition itself. Volvo confirmed orders were placed on the stand and other "serious opportunities" were generated. A spokeswoman said, "Visitors to ScotPlant 2016 had the opportunity to witness the formidable force of Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Trucks working side by side and see the new EWR150E wheeled excavator for the first time in Great Britain. "The Operators Club area on the Volvo stand saw many existing members visit for a free gift while 45 new members were

signed up to the club." Brian McGrane, area sales manager for Liebherr GB and Central Scotland, said the firm has always secured business at the show. "It's been an excellent weekend for the fact we've had some excellent leads and we've

actually done some business at the show, which always happens at ScotPlant," he said. "Machines are purchased at the show, which makes it worthwhile for us to do. ScotPlant has always been successful for us – we wouldn't have done it all these years if it wasn't." Lyle Sibbald, sales manager for TDL Equipment, who were exhibiting a host of Terex Trucks and Sany excavators, also confirmed business had been conducted at the show. He said, "These shows are very important. It gives you a good gauge of what the market's doing and what people are buying. These type of things are good morale boosts for everyone in the companies. We've had a very successful show, the amount of enquiries we've had has been fantastic. We've also done some sales on the stand so you can't

ask more than that." ScotPlant has traditionally been a successful show for Young Plant Sales – and this year was no exception. Managing director, Brian Young, explained, "We've been run off our feet – and that's the way we like it. This is our opportunity to show everybody what we do. Certain customers think we only do Kubota. Others think we only do dumpers or heavy excavators. This gives everybody an opportunity to see the full range of equipment. It lets customers see the latest developments in terms of engine emissions, technologies and telematics. It's a great show for a business like ours." Yarwoods Excavator Attachments used ScotPlant to promote new products, including from the newly-acquired Hartl distributorship, and to educate customers

The Terex TR100 generated plenty of interest

about some of the changes which have taken place at the firm in recent months. Managing director, Henry Brain, said, "A few changes have gone on in the company with Peter Yarwood looking to retire so it's very important for us to show that it's business as usual. What better opportunity is there to show we’re very much alive and kicking, and to raise the profile of the new products we've taken on? I think the trade shows are very important. This is a great opportunity for customers to have a hands-on look and see what's in the market. For us it's about being able to give the right technical information." Andy Black, founder of ScotPlant debutants Relentless Plant, sold a Yanmar excavator on Day One of the show. "We've had a lot of genuine enquiries, a lot of

good business has been done," he confirmed. "We've caught up with customers we've never had the chance to speak to face to face. We'll definitely be back in two years. For Scotland this is the only big show. You've got the likes of Liebherr, Komatsu and Volvo - for us to be amongst it is very good considering where we’ve come from." Survey Connection has been exhibiting at ScotPlant since the show started. Craig Stoddart, operations director, said, "The personal side of doing business – that's what we like about this and it's a fantastic show for that. This is the best exhibition show we can attend. It's every two years and we sell a lot of equipment from this stand and we get a load of leads we follow up over the coming six months. It's a fan-

tastically organised show - the best we've ever attended. The Internet is a fantastic shop window but sometimes people like to try before they buy. They can come here, there's no commitment, and they can ask technical questions you often can't do with Internet sales." Charlotte Evans, from Astra Site Services, providers of hydraulic excavator attachments, was also full of praise. "It lets the customers come and have a look at the attachments and physically see how they can help them," she said. "Nothing beats being able to see what you're talking about. The show is much bigger that I thought, there's a lot more plant here than I thought and the weather's a lot better than I imagined!" Peter Brown, from Apex Fluid

Power, said ScotPlant was a "fantastic platform" for the firm’s products. "It's our first time here but it has been an excellent platform to showcase the products. Emailing is a faceless task. Face to face makes a fantastic difference. People are here because they want to buy. We'll be back certainly, with a much-increased range of machinery." Paul Thorne, from SCG Supplies, added, "Today's been a great opportunity to meet some of the guys we talk to on the phone two or three times a week. We've had quite a few managing directors here telling us that we're doing okay for them. We're here to get more business, plain and simple. That's exactly why everyone's here and I think it's been very successful."

ScotPlant 2016

The Case for ScotPlant is stronger than ever! Machine giants sell to customers old and new CASE confirmed the sales of 29 machines at ScotPlant 2016. Some deals were done on the day while others had been in negotiation prior to the exhibition. Case, who had the biggest stand in the event's history, declared it a "highly successful" show for the firm and their Scottish dealer Hodge Plant. Hodge Plant used the event to announce expansion plans with the opening of a new site in Nairn to support customers in the north and Highlands. Case confirmed sales were secured at ScotPlant to both new and existing customers. Cumbernauld-based Dow Group purchased an F Series 721FXR waste wheel loader, while existing Hodge Plant customer Elliot Henderson & Sons Ltd bought the first CX370 D Series excavator in Scotland. Morris Leslie, managing director of fellow exhibitors Morris Leslie Group, visited the Case stand to confirm they would be placing an order for machines to add to their existing fleet. Alistair Hodge, director of

The Case stand looking resplendent in the Scottish sun

Hodge Plant, said, "This has been a very successful show for us, as well as welcoming existing customers to the stand we have made many new contacts and se-

cured sales. "We have also had extremely positive feedback from customers viewing the new D Series range, which is very encourag-

ing." Scott Freeman, business director CNH Industrial Construction Equipment for UK and Eire added, "ScotPlant has always been a The Case Rodeo Challenge

successful show for us and this year has been no exception. "Our new D Series range has been very well received, and sales in general have been very encouraging. "We are also attracting many new customers to the Case brand in Scotland through our dealer Hodge Plant, which I'm confident will continue to increase with the opening of their site in Nairn." ScotPlant hosted the first round of the annual Case Rodeo Challenge, where a record 100 operators were challenged on their skill and speed. John Jardine, from John Jardine Plant Hire, came out on top. Operating a Case 690ST backhoe loader, he managed to place a number of balls into a basketball net in a time of 1:18.

'Quality visitors, excellent leads' ALLAN Kane, general manager of Blue Machinery (Scotland) Limited, described ScotPlant 2016 as the best he'd been involved in after almost a decade with the firm. "It was an excellent show," he said. "Again, a lot of quality visitors there. Excellent leads to follow up. We did a couple of deals pending at the show, which are in the process of being finalised at the moment. "There was actually a surprising amount of people came up from the north east this year, which I've never really noticed in previous shows to be honest. Your main buyers were all there as usual and it was well split over both days, I think. "This year we showcased two new machines from Powerscreen to the market. The largest in the range, which is a PT600 jaw crusher, generated a serious amount of interest. It's the first time Powerscreen has jumped into that kind of market and there was a lot of interest, mainly from the quarrying guys. "We also had the smallest machine in the Powerscreen range, which is the new Warrior 600. It's a compact, versatile machine and that got, again, a serious amount of interest. I think part and parcel of that is we sat it on an agricultural trailer just to show its small footprint, versatility and flexibility." Allan believes ScotPlant's Ingliston location is part of the reason for the show’s continued success. "Edinburgh is easily accessible, especially

for the north east," he added. "It's within touching distance to a couple of hours from most operators in Scotland and I think that the market is certainly showing signs of being buoyant again. "We've been going to ScotPlant from day one and without a doubt it's the best ScotPlant show that I've certainly been involved in, in my nine years with Blue, in terms of quality people there and I think footfall in general was significantly higher than it has been in the past. "From our point of view it was an excel-

lent show, we had a lot of interest, we've got a lot of deals pending on the back of the show. "People are coming to you rather than us going to them so the fact that you're there, you've got a presence and it's a great networking opportunity. "People can drop by in an informal situation, have a cup of tea, maybe a bite to eat. You're not catching them off guard in the middle of their day-to-day job. They've actually got time for you; they're coming to see what you've got to offer."

ScotPlant 2016

Business as usual With Worsley Plant enjoying another successful ScotPlant, MD Sean Heron says the event has become a firm fixture in the calendar SEAN Heron, managing director of Worsley Plant, described ScotPlant as his favourite show after another busy weekend. Worsley has been attending the exhibition for 16 years and, according to Sean, the firm "always" comes away with business. "This is a fantastic shop window for us to display all our products to the Scottish market," he said. "We've had great success in Scotland. This is my favourite show of all the ones we go to. "There's always a great atmosphere. We get a lot of time to spend with the customers, quality people coming on to the

stand. "It's one I look forward to every other year. "The Scottish market is massively important to Worsley Plant because our core customers are into the crushing and screening products. Our buckets work very well in the rural communities where the material values are very high. The jobs are small so the crushing and screening buckets work very well in that environment." Sean strongly believes that shows like ScotPlant are important for the construction equipment industry. "I feel it's a way of putting our products in front of a huge audience at a very low

cost," he explained. "It's well advertised, ScotPlant is firmly in the calendar now every other year. I can't imagine doing business without the exhibitions. "We've been coming to ScotPlant for the past 16 years. We've always left here with business, either at the stand or in the weeks and months that come afterwards. It's very important in the calendar. "Orders on the stand are always nice. We got a couple of orders yesterday (Day One) and one this morning. It's business we wouldn't get otherwise." The biggest feature Worsley Plant had on display was the Lehnhoff Variolock quickcoupler

system. "It's been a great crowdpuller," Sean added. "A lot of people have stopped and been amazed to see it switching from hammer to bucket to grab in 1015 seconds. "We're delighted to be here and show our products off to the Scottish market. With the products we do, we've been described before as a 'niche within a niche' which I think is quite accurate in some ways. Whilst we've been doing the products for 14-15 years we're still seen as new boys because a lot of people aren't aware of what the products fully do. Our market is very big, it's very untapped. The potential is huge."

Exhibition is "key" for Scottish industry Relaxed vibe 'half the battle' PAT Bulcock, AgCon Steelwrist UK managing director, said they sold twelve units during the course of the ScotPlant weekend. Pat believes the Scottish market has taken to tilitrotators in a huge way and he sold to both new and existing customers over the two days. "I love that show," he said. "It's so relaxed, everyone's chilled, and that's half the battle. Tiltrotators have landed at last. We sold about 12 units - physically signed and sealed. "There's a lot going on in Scotland with the likes of windfarms, bypasses, hydro schemes. "The Scottish mindset is similar to the Scandinavian mindset. People recognise the benefits and quality of the products.”

CALLUM Mackintosh, owner of Invernessbased Highland Hammer Hire, who were making their ScotPlant debut this year, said he was “overwhelmed with the good quality business there was to be done” at the show. “We had a lot of different and bespoke equipment on the stand and, as a whole, customers were very impressed with what we had and pleased with our attitude in dealing with them. Our ethos is nothing is a problem, we only do solutions. If it’s out of the ordinary, we can do it – that’s really where we excel. “There is no other way to concentrate that custom and such quality in as short a peri-

od of time. Throughout both days we were steady all day, consistently with good enquiries. We had five staff on the stand and we all agreed that every enquiry received was a genuine and positive one.” Callum said that ScotPlant is “highly important” for the Scottish plant industry, “It’s important for everybody along the chain, it’s a good networking opportunity that gets you meeting the people that you just don’t generally get to see face to face and it’s a great platform to show customers your products or solutions in a relaxed way. “It’s key to our industry. We are already looking forward to ScotPlant 2018; in fact, I've already booked the stand,” he added.

Hydrema hails "fantastic" show HYDREMA UK had a "fantastic" showing at ScotPlant 2016, according to sales director, Tim Wadsworth. The UK subsidiary of Danish A/S Hydrema sold three machines on the stand from its recently launched F Series of articulated dump trucks. Tim told Project Plant the firm sold a 912FHM (high mobility), which is fitted with larger, wider 800/30.5 tyres, giving it a loaded ground pressure of 88kpa, as well as a standard 912F and a six-wheel drive, 22-tonne payload 922F. Tim said, "The F Series machines are the latest ones that meet the Tier 4

emission rules and we wanted to show those off. “Scotland is a very important area for us. We sell a lot of our trucks up here because they are suited to poor ground conditions and wet conditions. "The reaction is always good from our Scottish customers and the new trucks seemed to go down quite well." Speaking about what makes ScotPlant stand out, Tim said, "You get to see people you wouldn't normally get to see. You get a good mix of customers but, in my opinion, you don't get a lot of tyre kickers – you get a good clientele that are genuine users." Project Plant August/September 2016

Co-Pilot system puts Volvo in the driving seat VOLVO Construction Equipment's Co-Pilot system has won the 'most innovative HMI (human machine interface) feature' category at the Car HMI Awards 2016. The system, which is designed for use on various machines including excavators and pavers, uses a tablet computer to deliver intelligent machine services including Load Assist, Dig Assist, Compact Assist and Pave Assist. Sidney Levy, design director at Volvo CE said, "Volvo Co-Pilot sets a new industry standard, puts the user at the heart of the system and is the first step towards an integrated, holistic solution for worksite opti-

misation. "With its intelligent assist-functionalities, the system allows our customers to work more efficiently and safer than ever before. "This award is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of Volvo CE's skilled employees who continue to push the boundaries of

technology and design." Volvo Co-Pilot was launched at bauma earlier this year. The platform was developed in collaboration with CPAC System AB – a company owned by the Volvo Group which develops and integrates safety-critical electronic control systems.

MOLSON has secured an ÂŁ18 million finance package from HSBC, which will help the firm acquire more heavy plant stock. The Bristol-based business sells machines including excavators, material handlers and shredders from leading manufacturers like Hyundai and Kobelco. The funding will be used to buy up more stock and to "develop partnerships with new and existing heavy plant equipment brands". Molson is currently in partnership with eleven brands. In 2010 the business became Hyundai's biggest dealer in Europe. Jonathan Wilson, joint managing director at Molson Group said, "Molson has grown exponentially since it was founded in 1996, but

we are an ambitious business and are always looking for opportunities for further expansion. HSBC has played an important role in making those ambitions a reality by devising tailored finance packages that suit the requirements of our business, with this latest round of funding no exception." James Shepherd, HSBC's area director for Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire added, "HSBC has provided Molson with a flexible finance package by consolidating existing finance agreements and increasing the amount of funding available. Through this, we are helping the business secure new partnerships and expand its brand offering which supports its long-term growth strategy."

Kirkcaldy firm in full swing A Kirkcaldy-based plant hire firm has "reacquainted" itself with Volvo after snapping up a new ECR235E reduced swing radius excavator. James Penman Plant Hire is a family-run business which has been in operation since the mid-1970s. The firm was on the lookout for a larger machine after being impressed with the 14 tonne EC140B Managing director James Penman, whose late father, James senior, founded the business explained, "As we were in the market for a larger machine around the 20 tonne size class featuring a reduced swing radius we were quite taken with the look of the Volvo ECR235E. "We're really impressed

with the smooth control of the machine, the build quality and by no means least its excellent stability across carriage when lifting three tonne trench boxes. "The short swing characteristic is a must for a good proportion of work we undertake which involves maintaining roadside drainage working on busy

carriageways. Having this weight of machine and a good lifting capacity across carriage with plenty of reach gives us a distinct advantage." Volvo said the ECR235E forms part of the investment made by James Penman Plant Hire when the company acquired Meiklem Drainage last year.

New depot is open for business JARVIE Plant held an open day at its recently opened Dundee depot in a bid to target new business in Tayside. The firm is already supplying equipment to a number of local projects including the new V&A Museum. "We are keen to embed ourselves into the local community and get involved with businesses who have a need for our machines and equipment," said David Jarvie, business development director. "By throwing open the doors to our new depot we can connect with our core customers who range from housebuilders to civil engineers and local building contractors." The event involved a dancing JCB display plus vehicles from Jarvie's sister company, JP Vehicle Rentals.

M9 project sets asphalt benchmark TARMAC and Amey recently claimed to have set a new Scottish surfacing benchmark after laying 2460 tonnes of asphalt in just 29 hours. The project on the M9 between Junctions 6 and 7 was delivered as part of Amey's G4 South East contract with Transport Scotland. Tarmac said asphalt laying on "similar scale" road projects is usually delivered within a period of 48 hours. Transport Scotland closed the road so that the two firms could have full access and speed the

process up. A full closure of the road allowed Tarmac to lay material using two paving machines. Asphalt from Tarmac's nearby Hillwood and Cairney Hill quarries also cut delivery times. Andrew Grimsley, general manager at Tarmac Contracting Scotland said, "This project's success is the result of a collaborative attitude to delivery, proactive management and a team that is focused on results. "It provides an important industry benchmark for future

schemes as we strive to work as efficiently as possible to cut project timescales and minimise disruption to the Scottish public." Tom Wallace, account director for Amey South East Trunk Roads Unit, added, "This is a perfect example of Amey working closely

with our contractors - and utilising cutting-edge technology - to ensure we continue to deliver high quality results faster and with even greater cost-efficiency. "It is an innovative approach to working that directly benefits our customers and the travelling public."

Jock's flair for innovation is key 'driver' of success Gary Moug speaks to Bryce Suma's founder about the Scottishbuilt machines sold around the world JOCK Bryce has been operating, designing and developing post drivers for 39 years. When he decided 20 years ago to enter the commercial market a prototype was built and since then, and with hundreds of design changes and patents, the result is marketleading post drivers which have been described in the press as the benchmark or Rolls Royce of machines. Jock is the founder of Kelsobased family business Bryce Suma, a manufacturer whose tractor-mounted post drivers are sold in 15 countries around the world and his one-man tracked fencing machine, the Bryce 180 Pro, is now operating in 10 countries. All his post drivers, which are used for a huge variety of fencing and hole-punching operations, have won top innovation awards and are constantly being upgraded for use in sectors including civil engineering, pile driving, agricultural and industrial fencing. The numerous prizes include a stack of Gold, Silver and Lamma Awards - the highlight being three Golds in one year (at the Royal Highland Show, the Royal Show and Royal Welsh Show). This remarkable achievement was something which had never been done before and what is even more

Bryce 180 Pro

Jock Bryce exhibiting his machines at ScotPlant this year

astounding is that it came from a small family business that was up against massive international companies. Many tributes have been paid to Jock's patented designs and abundance for innovation and excellence. For Jock though, it has become a labour of love and he's immensely proud of the fact that products produced in the Scottish Borders are being utilised around the world seeing himself as an ambassador for his country.

He told Project Plant, "I used to farm with my father in the Cheviot Hills in the Scottish Borders. We had to leave the family farm due to his ill health and after five years of shepherding and farm management I started my own business with the focus on fencing. That was over 40 years ago. "I had no money and had to try and work out how to do the work easily and quickly. Of course when I started off it was all hand work but I quickly became very frustrated due to the heavy workload and obviously couldn't get near the output required and had to mechanise. So I quickly went from using a handheld auger to a tractor auger, and then I bought my first post driver for ÂŁ1160 and couldn't sleep at night for worrying about how I was going to pay for it. Three years later I bought another one for ÂŁ1340 and of course I had to fund the cost of two tractors as well. As a one-man band,

these two outfits allowed me to keep all my customers happy as I could split my time between two people without having to move equipment. "However I still wanted something that would make the job faster and easier because all the work I did was on hill ground." Jock began to build various other post drivers with improved features and performance and, in 1997, he introduced his first post driver to the commercial market. "We've had tremendous success with these machines and everything is produced on our own property based near Kelso. "I've patented about 15 different features to maintain a high degree of exclusivity in the market. It has cost a lot of money but it helps me retain my intellectual property rights and will prove an insurance and lasting legacy for the family. Continued on p64

profile Continued from p62 "If you want quality like a Mercedes, that's the quality and performance you get when you buy a post driver from us. We build them for performance, durability and reliability. I spoke to a contractor yesterday who has a five-year-old machine he's never had to lay a spanner on. Another has an eightyear-old machine he's never had to touch apart from regular greasing and the occasional hammer rope. "Having been born, brought up and worked on our own hill farm, and then fenced on my own in hill country, I understand what's required and never liked things breaking down when in full flow in the middle of a working day. That's why we build machines the way we do. I'm hands-on. I'm a working man. I've got no letters to my name. My ancestors were shipbuilders and engineers in Belfast." Jock's father was an innovator himself and patented a device for transporting haystacks from field to barn with a small tractor. Before Jock got into full flow with his post driver designs, he patented three products for permanent electric fencing. Jock believes he's benefited from a "genetic throwback" in that he's inherited an ability for creating innovative designs. "It's in there somewhere," he explained. "I wasn't academic at school but did well with technical subjects and couldn't get away from school quick enough. "Being brought up in the Borders in the midst of hill farms I was amongst guys who were bring-

The Bryce Vulcan VR800

ing out sheep and cattle for the show circuit. These stocksmen were dedicated people who were meticulous in their attention to detail and every year tried to go one better, so that influenced me and I had a strong leaning towards that. What I'm doing now is very similar, only with metal. The process is the same. I keep trying to go one step further." Jock's flagship products include the Bryce 180 Pro, Bryce Vulcan VR800 and the Bryce Forest Supreme. "The top models have up to 175 tonnes of hitting power available for driving heavy metal piles and hole punchers but they also allow you to put in big, heavy straining posts in less than a minute in moderate ground conditions," Jock said. "That means less strokes, less wear, quicker cycle times and more profit. The quicker the job gets done, the quicker you can move on to the next one and the higher the throughput at the end of the year. The tractormounted machines have a host of patented features, for example the auto-telemast, rock spike transfer system and quadshift. Likewise with the new Bryce 180 Pro oneman tracked fencing machine, which is also patented and with others pending. This innovative and versatile design rotates from left to right through 180 degrees, can be driven in both directions by way of a cab-mounted rotating seat or by hydraulic dual controls, which can be operated from the ground. "A novice can get good results very easily with these machines.

The Bryce Forest Supreme

They're user-friendly. All the controls are natural. I'm not into electronics at all because of the issue of long-term reliability. We have had problems with failed electronics on vehicles ourselves. Speaking to modern-day agricultural dealer workshops and truck servicing workshops, they seem to have a daily stream of electronic issues to deal with. "If you are out working in remote areas on your own, or even with a gang, the last thing you want is your prime machine to break down and having to get an autoelectrician to travel miles at ÂŁ50 an hour to try to identify and rectify a fault."It's about designing and manufacturing equipment that's as near bomb-proof as possible. People often remark at the shows that you can see the quality in the product by the way it's built and put together." Jock's wife, Jennifer, looks after the administration side of the business while his sons, Andrew and Stuart, are involved in the sales, works and logistics areas. A third son, Ian, has his own carpentry business. "They're all blessed or cursed with their father's genes in terms of having to do the job right and attention to detail," Jock laughed. "Some people say we're tough to work for by way of the standards we set - I can spot a pinhole in a weld! I've been described as a hawk in the fabrication shop!

"I sometimes do a lot of my thinking and development in the wee small hours lying in bed when I rehearse my new designs and what I'm thinking about. It's a bit like amateur dramatics – you have rehearsals and by the time you get to the first night, you're ready. Sometimes when I'm doing this I'll realise something won't work so I go over it many times until I resolve it. When I come to put it together in the fabrication shop, I've already made it umpteen times in my head. "I draw new parts out using a bit of cardboard and then get card drawings made up. It's an old fashioned way but my overheads are minimal. There's a hell of a lot of effort goes into getting any new designs made and then promoted in the marketplace. "When I was a wee boy I used to love walking into the local blacksmith and seeing things being manufactured and repaired. I loved the challenge of maintaining equipment and driving tractors on steep hill ground. That was my place – engineering and farming. "The blend of these two things makes you into what you are and allows you, when you get the freedom, to express yourself. I'm selftaught. My work is my hobby. But it's important to point out that I've got a great team behind me. Without their help, none of this would be possible." www.brycesuma.co.uk

LIEBHERR-Great Britain has designed and supplied an excavator for direct mounting on Moray Council's new ÂŁ2.5 million dredger, named by local schoolchildren as the MV Selkie. The Liebherr 936 machine, supplied with marine specification and two excavation buckets, unloaded 260 tonnes from its hull in half an hour on its first trip. Moray Council is responsible for the maintenance of six harbours and is the only local authority in Scotland to own a dredger. The 250 tonne MV Selkie was

custom built at Macduff Shipyard in Buckie and is a replacement for the Council's previous dredger, The Shearwater, which was sold for scrap four years ago. Liebherr was involved with the project from the ship design stage and worked with Macduff Shipyard's own design team using Liebherr drawings. "The brief was for an excavator to be directly mounted on the front of the ship with a support turret that matched the Liebherr Continued on p68

"The machine of choice was the 30 tonne class 936 excavator with a 10.2 m mono boom and a 7.7 m dipper arm. "The 936 has been supplied with a marine specification, which includes water resistant paint and both a foam-filled dipper arm and seals on all pins and bushes to prevent water ingress and internal rusting. "It has also been supplied with two excavation buckets plus additional hydraulic circuits and pipework, including a boom and dipper arm, to allow the use of various attachments, such as a clamshell bucket if required. "And for efficient underwater excavations, the 936 is fitted with the Prolec pcX-pro 3D positioning product that allows the operator to view what is going on under the water. Visibility is also aided by LED 2100 lights that illuminate both the work area and the area around the machine." Pupils from nearby Cluny Primary School named the new dredger and were given the opportunity to visit Buckie harbour

news New Jarvie recruits to aid growth

GRANGEMOUTH-based Jarvie Plant has launched a "group-wide" recruitment drive to support its expansion plans. The firm now has eight depots in Scotland after recently opening a new base in Aberdeen and moving into a purposebuilt facility in Dundee. Staff numbers have risen to 150 within the last year. Now, a number of new posts are being created across Scotland including senior sales manager roles, operations managers, back office functions, plant fitters and supervisors. David Jarvie, business development director, said, "The business is on an exciting growth curve so it's vital we attract people who have the right sector experience. "With Scotland's construction sector gradually improving, we are aiming to provide our customers such as housebuilders, civil engineers and building contractors with a first class hire service." Jarvie is supplying equipment to projects including the Aberdeen bypass and Dundee's new V&A Museum.

It's Miller time for Malcolm DRAINAGE works carried out for schools and hospitals across Scotland have utilised equipment from Miller UK. The works have been completed by Malcolm Construction, with the two firms developing a business relationship spanning more than two decades. Malcolm's fleet has been bolstered by a number of Miller's hydraulic breakers, including a MGB0900 on its range of 14-tonne machines for general construction work and the breaking of drainage obstructions in a number of vital projects. The firm used Miller's MGB0260 compact breaker on its 3CX machines for a bus stop replacement in the Glasgow area, while the larger MGB1600 was used on Malcolm's 22-tonne machines for secondary breaking at its Milngavie and Beith quarries. Miller also supplies Malcolm with Scoop buckets and Power-Latch couplers for its entire fleet, as well as hydraulic breakers for 20 per cent of its fleet.

Excavator helps save historic Scots castle

Building was on the "brink of collapse" A new Doosan DX300SLR-5 was part of a fleet of machines hired to help save a historic castle. The crawler excavator was hired by Fraserburgh-based David Smith Contractors Ltd for the project at Abergeldie Castle, set by the River Dee in Crathie, Aberdeenshire. The A-listed 16th-century tower house was left on the verge of collapse after heavy rainfall caused the river to burst its banks, sweeping away around 20 metres of the banking. Inverurie-based Doosan and Bobcat dealer, Balgownie Ltd, supplied the DX300SLR-5, which was used to shore up the banks of the river, placing hundreds of tonnes of stone

along the river bank. The placing of the stone was followed by a large rock armour which should help secure the future of the historic building. David Smith, MD of

David Smith Contractors, explained, "We were pleased to be of help in the works to save Abergeldie Castle. "As soon as it was delivered by Balgownie, the new Doosan ma-

chine was off to site to work on the riverbank next to the castle. "Long-reach excavators like the Doosan DX300SLR-5 model are a speciality of ours and are popular in Scotland."

The sound of success Mark Williamson, sales and marketing director at PH Media Group, looks at how plant hire firms can harness the power of on-hold marketing to boost sales and customer service SITTING in an automated queue with only monotonous beeps or poor-quality 'please hold' messages for company isn't anyone's idea of fun. We're all familiar with the horror stories of people waiting on the phone for hours on end, becoming increasingly irritated by repetitive audio, but time spent

on hold does not need to be a negative experience. Plant hire firms can take an alternative approach. Most businesses endeavour to answer calls as quickly as possible but it is often difficult to resolve every telephone query instantly. Perhaps a caller might need information on a product

which isn't to hand or need to be transferred to another employee who has specialist knowledge. On these occasions where customers need to put on hold, it is important to create a positive experience that not only stops callers from hanging up but also prevents them forming a lasting negative perception.

Given that recent research by PH Media Group discovered 73 per cent of respondents wouldn't do repeat business with a company if their call wasn’t handled to expectations, it emphasises the need to handle calls in the best possible manner. Continued on p74

comment Continued from p72 THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND When it comes to choosing where money is invested in marketing and customer service, call handling is often overlooked. Research has found the average business spends 94 per cent of its marketing budget on getting customers to call and only six per cent on handling that call. The problem stems from the fact audio branding is still a relatively new discipline, meaning visual branding tends to take precedence for most businesses. First impressions last, so it is necessary to convey the desired image and values at first glance. But the way a company sounds is equally as important. Often, the phone represents the first point of contact between a potential customer and the plant hire firm, so it is a vital means of converting leads into sales. Training staff to provide a consistent, professional manner when answering the phone and developing a best-practice approach is a good starting point. This ensures leads aren't deterred at the first hurdle, instead enhancing the caller experience and ensuring a positive brand association is achieved. However, shaping employee behaviour isn't the only thing businesses can do. A COMMUNICATION TOOL A large number of organisations are still unaware about audio branding, labouring under the misconception that it is the preserve of large corporate organisa-

tions. On-hold marketing operates by transforming the meaningless beeps, poor muzak or silence commonly heard on hold into bespoke voice and music messages. The messages allow a company's existing brand image and values to be complemented through the manner of sound while ensuring customers are kept engaged and entertained. The latter is key, especially in light of the results of the study conducted by PH Media Group among 3,360 UK businesses. The construction industry was found to keep people on hold for an average of 32.21 seconds and while this may not seem like a long time on paper, consider an average television advert. Lasting around 30 seconds, the advertisement provides enough time to

convince – or not convince – the viewer to buy the product. Similarly, the time consumers spend on hold can be used as a communication tool by plant hire businesses to cross-sell and up-sell in an unobtrusive manner. For example, a caller could ring the company to enquire about hiring excavators, only to be made aware that the firm also rents out specialist industry equipment, such as agricultural tractors, which they might have had to get from another supplier. People also want to feel reassured that the equipment they are hiring is of a high standard. The messages can help to build trust by promoting the company's health and safety accreditations, awards or supplier-approved partnerships it may have. Equally, a plant hire firm could

look to showcase its available training courses to ensure the caller's staff know how to operate the machinery or could even direct the customer to the company website to boost traffic. THE BUSINESS BENEFITS Harnessing the subtle power of sound delivers an ideal opportunity to communicate directly to a captive audience in a way that best reflects the intended brand image of the business. Ultimately, it spells danger for plant hire firms if no consideration is given to what the customer hears when they call the business. Given that research has found 51 per cent of Brits feel more valued if they hear a bespoke voice and music message while on hold, the benefits are clear.

Modular props speed up project A combination of Groundforce's MP50 and Maxi Brace modular supports have been used on a challenging excavation project to construct a new residential block in Nottingham for Elory Student Accommodation. Groundworks contractor CJM chose to build the

basement in two phases, propping one side of the excavation until that half of the basement slab had been cast, then "leap-frogging" the supports to the other side and starting again. Groundforce said the contract to supply temporary supports was "keenly con-

tested". Mus Jiad, major projects engineer with Groundforce said, "Our props were lighter and easier to handle. "Not only are they easier to install, but being hydraulic they are quick to extend. Basically, using our props just speeds everything up."

Hillhead 2016

New models out in force at rain-lashed Hillhead HUGE crowds braved the attimes unseasonably wet weather at this year's Hillhead exhibition near Buxton, Derbyshire. The expanded event welcomed many of the biggest names in the plant industry and gave visitors the opportunity to see the latest

machines prove their worth in the busiest 'live demonstrations' areas in the show's history. Here, we take a look at just some of the new product launches and spectacular machines that were in attendance at the biennial event.

Relentless rain on Day Two resulted in some visitors seeking shelter in the covered sections of exhibitor stands. The weather brightened up on Day Three.

The X-factor New Volvo hauler

sizes up the market

ONE of the highlights on the Liebherr stand was the UK's first L 586 XPower wheel loader. With more than 32 tonnes of operating weight, the machine is the largest model in the range and, according to Liebherr, has proved its worth during "intensive long-term testing". Liebherr said, "XPower wheel loaders automatically adapt to the working situation with the most efficient ratio between hydrostatic drive for material uptake and short distances and mechanical drive for long distances and uphill. "This enables them to achieve full power and the highest levels of fuel efficiency."

VISITORS to the Volvo stand at this year's Hillhead event could hardly fail to notice the firm's largest ever articulated hauler. The mammoth 60-ton capacity A60H, designed for heavy hauling in severe off-road operations, was shown for the first time in Britain at the exhibition. Volvo said the machine "brings a new dimension to reducing the cost per tonne of material moved using tried and tested frame and powertrain designs with the emphasis on fuel efficiency". The A60H is powered by a 16 litre Volvo engine, delivering 495 kW and 3200Nm of torque, and has a maximum speed of 54.9kph. Other features include automatic drive combinations, including 100% differential locks, all terrain bogie, hydro mechanical steering and active suspension. Volvo said, "Fitted with an active hydraulic

front suspension for higher hauling speeds in tough conditions, the A60H optimises operator comfort and stability during travel, allowing more material to be moved in a shorter time for unmatched productivity. "The A60H's dump support system, Hill Assist and load and dump brake, all help the operator to stay in control at all times, for extra productivity and safety."

Hillhead 2016

Making presence felt TEREX Finlay officially launched two new products at Hillhead and gave exhibitors a preview of a third. Being launched was the new C-1540 direct drive cone crusher and 674 3-deck inclined screen (pictured above). The I-140RS impact crusher, which will be launched in Quarter 3 this year, was previewed as part of the company's largest ever presence at the event. "Literally every machine on display at the show is a new product introduction, been recently launched or a preview of another new model," said Nigel Irvine, sales and marketing director.

An Affinity with Boss Big Space 24

BOSS Cabins unveiled its new flagship generator, which it cliams is capable of working continuously for 2000 hours between service intervals. The product has been fitted as standard to all new Boss Cabins since June. Boss said the new generator, Red Box Affinity, is expected to deliver "significant cost savings". The new generator was joined at Hillhead by the firm's Big Space 24, featured with stainless steel doors left without paintwork to highlight the 25-year durability of units with this material.

Terex Finlay said the C-1540 has been developed with the medium sized owner operator and contract crushers in mind. "The machine has been well received at a number of customer preview events and we are pleased with the initial order levels being placed on the factory," the firm explained. The small to mid-size 674 inclined screen, Terex Finlay added, "has been specifically developed to appeal to the contract crusher and small scale owner-operator looking to produce four specification products from the one platform".

Worsley goes large at exhibition WORSLEY Plant demonstrated the new MB BF135, described as the largest crushing bucket in the UK. Worsley also used the Hillhead show to launch the upgraded MB BF90.3 Series 3 crushing bucket and the new MB

drum cutter range. The MB-R series is said to be suitable for concrete wall and surface profiling, trenching, rock excavation, demolition and dredging. The new PD range of buckets from REMU also took pride of place on the stand.

The BF135.8

Keep on the right 'Trak' KUBOTA UK launched a new partnership with telematics solutions provider, Trakm8, at Hillhead which it says will provide improved machine efficiency and theft recovery thanks to tracking capabilities. Kubota said it can now provide a "plug and play" telemetry solution, which can be integrated with the firm's anti-theft technology, providing information like

engine and emission data and driver performance. Dave Roberts, Kubota UK's managing director said, "By utilising the latest telematics technology now available, our end users and dealer network can not only minimise machinery wear and tear by promoting positive driver behaviour, but can also reduce their carbon footprint, minimising environmental impact."

Blue sky thinking

Gary Moug visits Blue Scotland's new state-of-the-art premises in Stirling. The 3.5 acre site will stock over £500,000 worth of spare parts BLUE Scotland has recently made a "game-changing" move to much larger premises in Stirling. The company has taken over a three-and-a-half acre site at Broadleys Business Park in a change designed to offer customers an enhanced overall service. The new building includes a training room, workshop and refurbishment bays. Allan Kane, General Manager of Blue Machinery (Scotland) Ltd, told Project Plant that the move sends a clear message to the marketplace and reaffirms the company's commitment to the local area. "Where we were before was a good bit smaller," Allan said. "The key differentiator for us is aftersales and the new facility enables us to better serve our customers due to our far superior stockholding in Scotland – over £500,000 worth of parts will be available to collect or same-day delivery. "We've now got a facility where we can store the majority of our machines inside with a dedicated,

The new boardroom fully equipped workshop that will enable us to offer full machine refurbishments and preventative maintenance type work that we weren't in a position to provide in the past, certainly in our own facilities. We are focusing 100% of our efforts on offering a better service to customers. That's the

bottom line." One acre of the new premises is undercover, consisting of offices, a workshop, spares and stock. "It gives us far more elbow room," Allan added. "Staff numbers have increased significantly in the last five years and we've doubled the size of our service

team in the last year. We're growing rapidly. "Another benefit of the new site is that it's only half a mile from the old one so there's been minimal disruption to the staff in terms of travelling and it has also Continued on p82

Continued from p80 given us a seamless continuity of service while the move was taking place. "The search for suitable premises started almost four years ago with Cumbernauld, Grangemouth and Falkirk being considered as options. As with any relocation we had to consider the impact on staff but with this new site it was just one more tick in the box. "Staff morale has gone through

the roof and having been shoehorned in to our last office, everybody is now extremely proud of where they come to work every day and for the few that have visited so far, our customers have been absolutely blown away. This shows the industry that we're here for the long haul and sends a message to the marketplace that businesses, such as ourselves, are re-investing. "Stirling has been the home of Blue Scotland for nearly 20 years

and we intend to be here for the next 20. For us to see steady growth we think we need to be improving our service year on year which this facility will help us achieve." With larger premises, Blue Scotland is now in a position to add even more value to its overall offering by providing operator training within the purpose-built training room. "On a monthly basis we'll select a machine and contact our customers who cur-

rently operate such a model and then offer half-day seminars from the OEM factory experts," Allan explained. "Customers and their operatives can join us in a classroom environment and also make use of stock machines to enable hands-on training to put in practice everything that they have learned. "That's such an important factor for us. We believe it's something else that we can offer that sets us apart. "The new facility was pretty much plug and play and was a more cost effective and time-saving solution than a purpose-built alternative. "We spent six weeks re-modelling the offices to make them more modern and concentrated heavily on parts storage, installing extensive racking throughout this area to enable over ÂŁ500,000 of stockholding. "We got the keys in late December 2015 and started using the facilities in the early part of this year primarily for the space it offers for the secure storage of machines. "The staff moved in at the end of May and since then we have recruited a receptionist and will be adding to the service admin team Continued on p84

We're 40 minutes from Glasgow and 45 minutes from either Edinburgh or Perth. "As far as refurbishment and preventative maintenance is concerned our vision is for customers to be able to drop their machines in to us while transporting them across the Scottish motorway network that links us. "We're going to have an open day later in the year to properly showcase the premises and all of the onsite facilities.

"Hopefully this will demonstrate first hand everything that Austin Carey and his team at Blue Scotland are trying to achieve. "We appreciate that for our customers service is key and in the crushing, screening and recycling game especially, downtime is a no go. "If we're equipped to have fast moving parts on the shelf and have the service team to back it up as well as offer operator training then it all adds to the overall positive picture. Going forward, the more we can back up our products, the better placed we are to serve the demands of our customers which remains our number one priority."

R400 is tough to 'Beat' BLUE Machinery Scotland recently sold a new Powerscreen Premiertrak R400 Pre Screen mobile jaw crusher to George Beattie & Sons following a demonstration of its capabilities. The machine will be used to crush brick and concrete material on a number of contracts across Scotland and was described by Blue as having a feed size up to 400mm in size. Blue Scotland said, "It is processing at between 200 and 400 tph, recycling the rubble to gen-

erally a 6F2 which can be used for a number of different purposes including road highway works, in trench fills, backfills and oversite fills." George Beattie & Sons specialises in demolition work, though other services include façade retention projects on listed buildings, asbestos removal and ground reinstatement. Commenting on the Premiertrak R400, co-owner David Beattie said, "The production rate is the most impressive aspect of

the machine, but this is all aided by the high clearance of the jaw from the belt and the hydraulic adjustable deflector bar. "The ability to drop the main belt for clearance of metal or maintenance was of specific benefit due to the applications in which this machine will work." Dermot Donaghy, sales manager at Blue Scotland added, "We are delighted to complete this first deal with George Beattie and Sons, a company who are renowned in Scotland for their ex-

ceptionally high working standards and prestigious contracts. "Alan and David (Beattie) place considerable emphasis on buying the best machines in the market for their requirements, so it is testament to the quality of Powerscreen that they have chosen the R400. Throughout the demonstration process it clearly outperformed its competitors in terms of tonnage on C&D material containing a significant amount of rebar‌and with no downtime."

Dow Waste Management cleans up with new machine Fraser Rummens speaks to the Cumbernauld firm about its new Case F Series 721FXR CUMBERNAULD-BASED Dow Waste Management purchased an F Series 721FXR waste wheel loader from Case, through their Scottish dealer Hodge Plant, at this year's ScotPlant and the machine has already been put to work at Dow's material recycling facility. Dow director, Marshall Dow, told Project Plant that one reason the firm purchased the 14.5-tonne Case unit was Alistair Hodge himself. "I've got a lot of confidence in Alistair," Marshall said. "He knows the industry very well, he will be able to support the machine and I can get him on the phone." Marshall continued, "To me, it's not just the quality of the machine. It's the quality of the back-up, it's the quality of the person you're buying it from and relationships are very important in this industry. In the plant hire game, it is actual relationships and people that make the big difference and that is fundamentally why I went for Case." While relationships are very important, the machine also needs to get the job done, which Marshall said the 721FXR could, calling it "well designed for waste applications". The machine features a windshield guard, front and rear light guards, a lift cylinder guard, metal wrapped hoses and front and rear bottom guards. "The waste industry is very hard on machines, with the varying types of materials it is dealing with every day – things that just pop out the waste, bits of wood, steel, wire – it's just a hassle so all

Scott Freeman, business director at Case UK, Sheila Dow and Alistair Hodge strike a deal at this year's ScotPlant

the extra guarding is perfect." The machine will be used for a variety of jobs at Dow's site. Marshall said, "It's going to be used for loading lorries, moving waste and cleaning out bays. "It could also be loading rubble and demolition material into the back of tippers. It is the right size to cope with the bays under our picking lines and enough to load lorries and move things in a quick manner." Marshall praised the unit's "excellent manoeuvrability" within the tight areas of the transfer sta-

tion. "The machine was bought because of its narrow frame, which works perfectly," he said. "We have a lot of waste that comes into this site on a daily basis so we have to keep our feet clear so it's constantly going around and clearing the ground, sweeping up the concrete floors, always tidying up and moving materials. "Visibility is excellent, manoeuvrability is excellent and the handling on the hydraulics is very sensitive but reactive. It's a comfortable machine to drive; driver

comfort is very important – the driver has got to enjoy driving the machine." Dow Waste Management is a family-owned and run company offering waste management services including recycling, skip and bin hire, tipper hire and trade waste collection. The family business has a history spanning over 40 years and entered the waste management sector in 2005 with the opening of its Cumbernauld recycling faContinued on p88

In recent years, the company has started developing biogas through anaerobic digestion, a natural process whereby biomass is broken down by microorganisms in the absence of air. Managing director, Sheila Dow, said she and Marshall have benefited from the longevity of the family business. "It came from our parents who had a plant hire company so our background knowledge is plant hire, haulage, tipper hire and that has evolved into what is today waste management," she said. Speaking on what makes Dow stand out, Sheila said, "About six years ago we decided to take the ethos that we were going to divert from landfill the maximum amount of tonnage as we could from the site here. "The material that would go to landfill is now produced as refuse

derived fuel (RDF) and we ship that from Grangemouth to combustion heat power plants in Europe. We've been doing that continually for six years and we're very successful at it." Marshall added, "I think that actually being the first company in Scotland to put in a full recycling plant designed for making fuel and the first company in Scotland to successfully win a contract to supply direct to power stations in Europe and having our own license on our own dockside – that makes us stand out from the rest." The company is "very much driven" by what the Scottish Government has implemented in terms of the environment, Sheila said. "They set targets, we've got targets that we have set ourselves and we've all got to aim for that goal. It's for a better future," she added.

Dean checks in at Case CASE Construction Equipment has appointed a new heavy-line product specialist for its UK and Irish operations. Dean Ashton has been involved in a number of major projects within the recycling and waste to energy sector, and has an "in-depth knowledge of plant procurement", according to Case. His most recent position was engineering manager with waste management solutions business, Impetus Waste Management Group. Prior to that he spent four years as engineering boss with R Plevin & Sons Ltd, a major producer of animal bedding and recycled wood products. Dean said, "This is a very exciting time to be joining Case,

with new product ranges raising the bar on performance and reliability, and new stateof-the-art manufacturing facilities. "I am very much looking forward to this new challenge and the opportunity to work closely with the UK sales team and product specialists on future machine development."

Sandvik chute leaves emissions in the dust HILLHEAD 2016 was the launchpad for Sandvik's new WE6000i telescopic chute, which has been designed to be fed by conveyors with a belt width of less than 800mm. Sandvik said its "unique features" minimise dust, boost operational efficiency, reduce material segregation and contamination and benefit workers and the surrounding environment. The chute features a vacuum created inside it by the material flow, which Sandvik said reduces the requirement for expensive filtration systems. "Our new WE6000i telescopic chute is designed to be used in a variety of areas and applications, with the chute itself being of a simple and rugged design," the firm said. "It possesses an extremely good ratio between minimum and maximum length, with the number of conical chute segments vary-

ing depending on the height of the stockpile and that of the feed conveyor. "The WE6000i telescopic chute can be operated from the control panel, via a PLC with automatic level sensor or manually via

remote control. The chute senses its height above the material stockpile and automatically adjusts, minimising the risk of dust emissions. In addition, the wire winches are equipped with limit switches."

A 'cool' solution to unwanted dirt A new forklift truck has been launched to help prevent engines overheating due to dust, dirt and debris. Hyster's "Cool Truck" is based on the H4.0-5.5FT range and contains features designed for tackling the tough conditions commonly found in waste and recycling operations. David Reeve, industry manager, counterbalance solutions for Hyster, explained, "When operating standard forklift trucks in the waste and recycling industry, the radiators can easily get clogged up causing unnecessary downtime. This is not only frustrating, it also costs businesses money in lost production and can lead to other problems.

"Firstly, we had to reduce the amount of debris entering the engine compartment and getting stuck on the transmission or in the radiator. As a first line of defence, we developed a fully enclosed frame and vented hoods, side panels and radiator covers to reduce the vacuuming of dirt and debris from the floor into the engine compartment. But it's the radiator that is the really clever part." Every 20 minutes, the Combi Cooler radiator fan changes direction for 20 seconds, blowing out any unwanted dust whilst sucking air in. This, the firm said, keeps the truck running longer, minimises radiator cleanouts and helps the truck to stay cool even in high temperatures.

Firms must consider a future of sustainable construction David Kinloch, business development executive at CDE Global, discusses new ways to approach construction waste and recycling restrictions COUNCILS all over the UK are becoming stricter when it comes to issuing new mineral extraction licences as they try to manage and preserve their own natural resources. In Scotland we are already seeing businesses reacting to an impending increase in the number of restrictions and taking the necessary steps to prepare for the future changes within the industry. At CDE we are anticipating that there will be an increase in the need for the recycling of construction and demolition waste in the coming years. In Great Britain the percentage of the aggregate market which came from recycled aggregate sources has moved from 10% in 1990 to 28% at the end of 2015. That shows that the use of recycled aggregates is

becoming increasingly accepted within the GB construction market. LANDFILL TAX As it stands, in order for inert construction, demolition and excavation waste in Scotland to go to landfill, it is subject to a £2.65 per tonne landfill tax along with any gate or tipping fees the landfill operator applies. This material, however, can be diverted from landfill and recycled into useful aggregates. By doing this businesses are not only saving money on landfill tax but they are also easing the burden on Scotland's natural aggregate resources and prolonging vital resources. The material and sand produced will avoid

David Kinloch

the £2 per tonne aggregate levy that all natural aggregates are subject to. This means the recycler has a £2 per tonne advantage straight away over competitors selling natural aggregates. Recycling facilities can be set up in urban environments such as industrial estates in the city or on motorway networks to give a logistical advantage over natural aggregate suppliers, meaning there is much greater flexibility on where to set up operations. A quarry extracting natural aggregates is confined to where the material resource is. When trucks come to tip off waste for recycling they can also lift clean aggregate to take back to the site they are working on, reducing transport costs on a low cost and high volume product. RECYCLING METHODS There are two main methods of recycling in use at the moment. Dry crushing and screening is generally used on materials such as crushed concrete. Operators have to be very particular on what they bring in as wet, sticky, clay bound materials cannot be processed. As a result this method can be weather dependent and in wet weather it may not be possible to operate. Continued on p94

recycling

Continued from p92 The final aggregate product this method produces is generally a lower value all in sub base or capping product. Wet processing, the type that CDE works with companies around the world on, can operate all year round and the operator does not need to be particular on what they take. For example the material can be wet, sticky, clay bound, concrete, excavation waste, construction and demolition waste or soils. The final product from wet processing is high value as it allows the company to produce clean single size aggregates and sands which are in specification to be used in concrete.

The aggregates and sands are sold back into the construction market to be used on new developments. The ferrous metals are recycled and the silt and clay cake is used for landfill capping. LEADING THE WAY Thompson Recycling from Dumbarton outside Glasgow is just one company looking ahead to a future of sustainable construction. They have installed a wet processing recycling plant and since then they have had planning passed to excavate their existing inert landfill and process the material through their recycling wash plant. They are the first and only company in Scot-

land to be excavating an inert landfill to recycle it. By doing this they intend to extend the life of the landfill by 30 years. It also means that what used to be a landfill for Thompson Recycling is now acting as a large stockpile of material for them to feed into their wash plant and produce quality aggregates which they can then sell back into the construction market as a direct replacement for natural aggregate. This industry is moving forwards, becoming more innovative and sustainable. It is time for all construction businesses in Scotland to look strategically at the future of their businesses before their activities become hampered by new restrictions.

Bespoke system boosts waste specialist LOWMAC Waste & Recycling has reportedly achieved "excellent results" from a bespoke BlueMAC materials remediation system. The North Ayrshire-based firm turned to BlueMAC Manufacturing in a quest to increase waste processing capacity and improve the quality of the end-products created by the recycling process. Blue Group said the system, which is processing a variety of incoming waste streams at around 1000 tonnes per week at a rate of between 25 and 30 tonnes per hour, is "designed and built to combine a series of compatible processors and conveyor arrays in

a convenient and compact under-cover configuration, (and is) capable of treating a broad range of mixed waste and, consequently, can provide material remediation to a very high quality". "Clean fines, secondary aggregates, biomass, animal bedding, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, amongst other saleable materials, are all being produced from this specially designed, multi-tasking plant", the company added. Kenny Smith, Lowmac's managing director said, "This plant is proving to be an excellent and versatile addition to our recycling and reclamation capabilities and is performing very well." SCG's newest recruit hopes to make a Mark Gary Moug meets SCG's new area sales manager, Mark Wemyss, who had to cut short his travel plans following some exciting news SCG Supplies has appointed Mark Wemyss as the firm's new area sales manager for Scotland and the north of England. Mark, who spent over a decade with Finning, started his new role, which will primarily involve selling recycling, crushing, screening and recycling products as well as increasing the company's spare parts business, in June. Mark left Finning late last year during a period of uncertainty in the industry following the downturn in the Scottish coal sector and collapse in oil price. Those factors gave him "food for thought" about his future and he decided to take a break from the industry and go travelling for a few years. "I found myself in a very fortunate position, having just sold a house in the west end of Glasgow, which is a booming micro market," Mark told Project Plant. "Having that security, I saw an opportunity to leave the UK for a while with my wife Amy. Travelling is a passion of ours, so much so that my colleagues at Finning actually used to make fun of us for the amount of exotic holidays and road trips we went on during my time there. "You're only young once I say, and it's what we like to spend our money on. But there's only so much you can do on a two-week vacation. We left in January and spent a month in India, then three weeks in Nepal where we trekked to Everest Base Camp, which was as challenging as it was breathtaking. We backpacked through Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam and Singapore over the course of four months. "Three months into the trip we discovered Amy was pregnant.

Mark Wemyss

We were delighted obviously, but had Australian Visas in place and paid for, and hadn't planned to be home for two or three years." Given the change in circumstances the couple returned to Scotland, and Mark began searching for a new job. "I started with Finning over ten years ago on the product support side of the business, in what would now probably be referred to as a Modern Apprenticeship type role, spending time in different parts of the business, learning about the various aspects to the company," Mark added. "The majority of my time was spent as a parts order interpreter, and I developed a knack for recognising customer requirements, seeing the big picture and upselling where possible, working on the front counter of the branch for six years.

"I was promoted into a machine sales role in 2011 and spent four years selling the full range of Caterpillar products, primarily focusing on the building and construction products initially– mini-excavators, telehandlers and backhoes. As I progressed and my knowledge grew I went on to sell larger machines, new and used, to larger companies covering the west coast of Scotland." When Mark arrived back in Scotland in May, he had a conversation with SCG founder, Stephen Grieve, about going to work for the Hamilton-based supplier of spare and wear parts. "I've known Stephen for many years," Mark added. "He used to be on the phone to me every other week looking for parts. I got a feeling for who he was back then and admired his courage for starting his own business. Now see-

ing the customers he's dealing with and the success he's having, it was a no-brainer for me to decide to go and work for a guy who I know and trust, and to become a valued member of a team in a small business. "It's a bit of a change and definitely a new challenge, coming from general construction to recycling and aggregate equipment, but there's a lot of crossover in the customer base. Although at Finning I was generally selling to owner operators and small companies in a designated geographical area, thankfully from my time in parts I have relationships with many of the key customers in the industry all over Scotland who operate a larger, more varied range of equipment. I hope to be able to build on these relationships now that I can sell to all of them directly, as I'm covering the whole of Scotland and the north of England. Mark's portfolio will consist of: • Bruce Engineering washing and recycling products, for which SCG has successfully been the UK dealer for some time. • Portafill International Ltd, a leading designer and developer of a range of, innovative and mobile screens, crushers, trommels, wash systems and conveyors. • Screenpod, a design and manufacture specialist to the global market. SCG has brought their range of durable heavy duty screening buckets on board, as well as the Airvac range of lights recovery separation systems for removing plastics and contaminants from conveyor belts in various applications. • Telestack bulk material handling systems.

was initially recommended by Matpro, as it would enable more efficient screening and higher throughput of materials. With high quality oscillating elements and exchangeable screen decks, the machine is now aiding the screening of up to 40 tons of finished products per hour. In addition, Matpro said its reliable technology with low power consumption coupled with its ability to be integrated with existing machinery means that it is much more cost effective for the company. Ken Chrystal, site manager at Hamilton's Smeaton Recycling Centre said, "We looked at various options available to us, but ultimately we found ourselves always coming back to the HAAS machine. "One of the main reasons for this was the brilliant expertise we received from Matpro Machinery. We were also highly impressed with the level of after sales service

we received. "Having someone on hand 24/7 like we are, to assist with any queries and to help us get the most out of the machine is something we can really rely on Matpro to provide." Ben McQuaid, managing director at Matpro Machinery commented, "Our company invests a lot of time helping our clients get the best machinery solution and to ensure that the machine integrates with existing machinery and resources, where possible. "Having looked at Hamilton's requirements, we recommended the HAAS Flat Oscilating Screen HPS125 as we knew it would match these requirements and facilitate more efficient screening. "We thoroughly enjoyed working with Hamilton Waste and Recycling Limited and we are delighted to still be serving the company with our dedicated after sales service support." Visit www.matpro.co.uk

Bell's new B60E receives a ringing endorsement ACCORDING to Bell Equipment, the design of the firm's new allweather B60E was inspired by the original B60D concept vehicle. That particular model proved itself a worthy successor sto the rigid earthmoving machines available a few years ago. The B60E, featuring a Mercedes Benz engine, is described by Bell

as 'the next generation' with its 4x4 full articulation steering and oscillation joint reportedly providing "more off-road capability than any other conventional rigid truck". Speaking in the aftermath of the Hillhead exhibition, Nick Learoyd, managing director of Bell Equipment, explained, "Our E-series vehicles, particularly the B60E,

have been a huge show-stand hit this year, with sales of both brand new and reconditioned models being secured during the exhibition. "Customers have demonstrated enthusiasm for, and confidence in, our machines - which with the proven legacy of our successful D-series behind them promise increased production payloads,

lower operating costs, uncompromised safety and a superior operator experience within the plant environment." Bell said the B60E can perform well even in adverse weather conditions thanks to its "all wheel traction, tighter turning circle and ability to negotiate steeper ramps delivering significant advantages over rigid truck competition".

DA30s bridge a gap TWO Doosan DA30 30 tonne ADTs fitted with high flotation tyres have been hired for work on a project to build the new Mersey Gateway Bridge. Doosan said the model features an articulation hinge positioned behind the turning ring to provide equal weight distribution to the front

axle even during maximum steer articulation. "This together with a free-swinging rear tandem bogie ensures equal distribution of weight to each wheel and guarantees permanent 6-wheel contact and drive for equal power distribution and excellent performance on difficult terrain," the company said.

TA300 shows its muscles MALCOLM Construction has snapped up a 28-tonne TA300 articulated hauler. Adding to its existing fleet from Terex Trucks, the group put the machine through its paces at a windfarm project in South Lanarkshire. Specified with scissor tailgates, flotation tyres and the Malcolm Group's unique livery, the ADT was supplied by Terex Trucks' UK dealer, TDL Equipment. The machine also proved its worth on a landfill restoration project on the outskirts of Glasgow. Lyle Sibbald, regional sales manager at TDL Equipment, said, "Malcolm Construction is a long-term customer of TDL. I think one of the reasons they like Terex Trucks is due to the

very reliable, high performing machines. "Another is because they're a Scotlandbased firm and in close proximity to the Motherwell factory. "Malcolm was looking at other brands but knew that they wouldn't get the bespoke service and the great support from any other

company due to the great customer-dealermanufacturer relationship they have with TDL and Terex Trucks." Malcolm Construction's new TA300 was also a centrepiece of ScotPlant 2016, attracting large crowds to the Terex Trucks stand at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston.

Magni Industries on the hunt for Scottish dealers SCOTTISH dealers are being sought by Magni Industries UK, the sole distributor in the UK and Ireland for Magni Telescopic Handlers Srl. The firm is looking to appoint dealers in key strategic areas, including Scotland, to sell the Magni products, which include rotating and heavy capacity telehandlers. The Italian manufacturer was involved in a long-standing joint venture with the Manitou Group that ended in 2009. Former Manitou executive, Alex White, is UK and Ireland business manager for Magni Industries UK. Alex said, "Magni now produces four different ranges of machines; the RTH rotating range, the HTH heavy capacity range, the new TH smaller capacity range and the recently launched access range that is a joint venture with China’s number one access manufacturer, Dingli Machinery. "All telescopic handlers from Magni SRL represent the next generation in telescopic handler design. They were designed to be the safest, most productive, most technical and most operator focused machines on the market. "The first thing to be designed was the cab. Telehandler cabs are

normally like Swiss cheese with lots of holes where various wires and pipes come through. "Magni took their inspiration from excavators and wanted the cab to be different to the norm. "The cab is fully sealed, air conditioned and pressurised to ensure a very clean and comfortable working environment for the operator. "The cab also has 100% filtration of the air before it enters the cab and the operator can select different filters (including forestry and asbestos) to match the conditions they are working in." Alex added that Magni wanted to reduce the amount of electric wires so the machines are fitted with a Can Bus circuit. "The wiring that is on the machine is all IP 67 and 24V working through the latest Danfoss SIL 2 safety valves, he explained. "This means that it is fully sealed to the elements. Using this system reduces the wiring going through the turret by over 40%. "The main criteria for the operators was visibility and safety. "Magni removed all of the switchgear (up to 42 different switches) associated with this type of product and replaced it with a single touch pad MCTS

(Magni Combi Touch System) operator system. Removal of the switchgear allowed Magni to fit the machine with floor to ceiling glass at the front of the cab giving visibility not experienced on this type of machine before. "This means that there are very few blind spots and the operator can see the load clearly when picking up from the ground." Alex described the MCTS system as a new concept that allows operators to access different pages using either a control wheel or touch screen. "These pages consist of driving, stabilisation (where applicable) load chart, command and customisation," he said. "All Magni machines are fitted as standard with attachment recognition chips, which allow the machine to know what it has attached. The really clever thing is that the machine selects the cor-

rect load chart for the attachment and then the operator is presented with the first ever dynamic load chart on the machine. "This means that unlike other machines on the market that only show the weight and angles etc, Magni shows the load moving within the designated load chart so that the operator can see when he is reaching his limit without having to look at additional books and charts. "The Magni range has been very well received by the industry, as many of the features on the machines have not been experienced before. The customers understand that the machines have years of experience behind them even though Magni is a relatively new company." • For more information, contact Magni Industries at info@magni-industries. co.uk

telehandlers

Magic circle: new Bobcat turning heads up north AN Inverurie-based firm has snapped up Scotland' s first Bobcat T36120SL 12 m telehandler. R & B Joinery bought the machine, which is part of the new generation of Bobcat telehandlers, from Balgownie Ltd. Features include a new panoramic cab which has a large parabolic windscreen providing panoramic visibility. A new dashboard and ergonomic controls including a joystick with integrated forward/ reverse (FNR) control are also included. Alistair Brownie, managing director of R & B Joinery explained, "As a busy building contractor working in the rugged

countryside of Aberdeenshire and the Highlands, we always have a requirement for telehandlers to effectively act as rough terrain forklifts capable of working on the different types of terrain we encounter when building properties in the area. With both the Bobcat frame-levelling and stabiliser systems on the machine, the T36120SL telehandler allows us to work with great confidence on whatever surface we have to deal with. "The T36120SL is also a compact telehandler, with a much better turning circle than we've seen on other telehandlers. Where the wheels go, the machine goes too."

JCB unveils newest model in HiViz telehandler range 540-100 offers "unmatched" lifting capability JCB had added a fourth model to its HiViz telehandler range. The new 540-140 machine, which is equipped with a choice of Tier 4 Final diesel engines, is said to offer a 4000kg maximum lift capacity with a maximum lift height of 13.47m on wheels, or 13.78m when using stabilisers. JCB said the 540-140 HiViz Loadall has the lowest boom mounting in its class, up to 235mm lower than the standard 540-140. Visibility is enhanced by a 13% reduction in the boom section and a more compact rear chassis section, which reduces overhang by 330mm. JCB added that, "Hydraulic

performance is closely matched with the engine's output, while lift performance has been tailored to the machine's stability, both when working on wheels and with the stabilisers. "This gives the 540-140 HiViz unmatched lifting and reach capabilities, when compared to competitive machines. "Hose burst check valves on the lift rams prevent collapse in the event of a hose failure and JCB's patented Adaptive Load Control system is automatically activated to control boom functions and help longitudinal stability." The 540-140 is powered by JCB's Ecomax diesel engine.

Plant firm seals ÂŁ16.5m order A Haydock-based plant hire firm has snapped up a whopping 300 new telehandlers as part of a huge investment in JCB equipment. Plant Hire UK (PHUK) is spending ÂŁ16.5 million on 400 machines, 300 of which are Loadall telehandlers. The order also includes site dumpers. The machines are being added to PHUK's fleet throughout the course of this year as the firm celebrates ten years in business. The JCB Loadalls range from the four metre 520-40 model through to the 20 metre lift height 540-200 machine. Graham Jones, co-founder of PHUK, said, "We aim to have one of the youngest fleets of machines in the industry and this latest investment will put Plant Hire UK at the forefront of the sector. "We aim to be the best in the industry too and that means having the best people, the best customer service and the best machines." The new Loadalls come with immobilisers and JCB LiveLink fitted as standard. JCB said the fleet management tool can "improve machine utilisation, cut running costs, increase productivity and manage servicing". Project Plant August/September 2016

Making new Contacts

Young at heart A-PLANT claims to have one of the largest and youngest holdings of telehanders in the hire sector following "substantial investment" in its fleet over the past year. The firm boasts almost 1600 machines, ranging from 4m to 18m, with an average age of under two years. A-Plant said its fleet of telehandlers have been bought from leading manufacturers and are equipped with the latest in telemat-

ics technology. Andrew Winlow, director of purchasing and fleet management at A-Plant said, "Across our entire fleet we've maintained a strategy of investing heavily in the latest equipment. Our telehandler fleet is no different and in the last twelve months, due to customer demand and exceedingly high levels of utilisation, our fleet of telehandlers has grown significantly to be almost 1600 strong."

A forklift attachment company has introduced a new set of telehandler products aimed at the construction, agriculture and plant hire industries. Welsh-based Contact Attachments has unveiled a range of dedicated telehandler attachments including safety cages, lifting hooks, bag handlers and sweepers. Jason Cadman, sales and marketing at Contact Attachments said, "We've been working extremely hard...on the designs and testing of our new range, and we're so excited to now be launching the range to market. They can be used on a variety of branded machines including Matbro, Manitou, JCB and Merlos, and have been produced with the same ethos of quality, innovation and workmanship as our forklift attachments to meet the rigours of everyday use."
