Cakes

Let’s get naked We’ve been a fan of the ‘naked’ (un-iced) cakes since they crept onto our radar in the last 18 months, and since then we’ve seen them hover on the brink of exploding into the mainstream. We predict 2014 will take them off the brink and onto scores of brides’ wishlists. Lynsey McLaughlin of Custom Cakes by Lynsey (customcakes.biz) thinks their versatility is key to their success: “Naked cakes fit in with any theme as you can decorate them however you like, with flowers matching those being used in the wedding arrangements, bunting or even coloured sponges.”

Painted love

1

Hand-painted sweet treats are in the frame for 2014 One trend that we can’t wait to see more of this year is hand-painted cakes. By using coloured icing as paint, cake-makers can create stunning, showstopping designs that look more like works of art than something you might slice up and eat. If you have an artistic side and the patience for a few practice runs, try it yourself – there are lots of DIY tutorial videos on YouTube that will give you step-by-step instructions on how to create your own masterpiece, and a quick Pinterest search will supply plenty of design inspo. We love the gorgeous cakes and cookies by Hertfordshire-based NeviePie Cakes (neviepiecakes.com, above and below), but keeping your ear to the ground and talking to suppliers at wedding shows will keep you in the loop for when these hand-painted delights are widely available north of the border.

1 Hand-crafted iced roses mixed with a fresh peony topper creates a perfect balance of rustic and intricate, Liggy’s Cake Company 2 Fresh berries make for a mouthwatering addition to this Little Cake Parlour confection 3 Cake bunting looks oh-so cute, Custom Cakes by Lynsey

Keep on cushion Expect to see a rise in unusual designs in 2014, like these cushioned tiers. Sharon Anderson of Designer Cake Boutique (designercakeboutique. com) told us: “I love the cushion-style cakes as they are quirky and fun, a great reflection of a couple’s character.” The cakes can also be customised to add a lovely personal touch. “As well as bride-and-groom toppers, lots of couples add extra figures such as a child or favourite pet.”

1 We can’t believe this creation from Designer Cake Boutique isn’t made from real cushions 2 Bows, sparkle and cake – what more could a girl want? Designer Cake Boutique 3 Unusual tiers in bold colours give this masquerade-themed cake eye-catching appeal, Designer Cake Boutique

VENUES We’ve compiled one of our biggest venue sections ever – 115 pages to be precise – so you’re spoiled for choice if you still have this most crucial of steps to book. Welcome to Scotland’s wonderful ‘I do’ destinations....

Just Bute-iful Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute has been recognised at the prestigious 2014 Hudson’s Heritage Awards (an independently judged awards scheme open to historic houses, gardens, museums and heritage sites), landing the runners-up spot in the category ‘Best Wedding Venue’. Loyd Grossman (of ‘90s Masterchef fame) was one of the judges and commented that “Mount Stuart is perhaps one of the most spectacular places in the country to hold a wedding.” We can’t argue with Loyd, as the neo-gothic Victorian mansion boasts a lavish marble hall, an awe-inspiring white marble chapel, luxurious accommodation and unspeakably ornate reception rooms. 01700 503877, www.mountstuart.com THE BEST SCOTTISH WEDDINGS
