DAN SULTAN Dan Sultan doesn’t quite fit comfortably into any niche you try to squeeze him into in the Australian music scene. His sexy, blues-infused rock weaves between genres and tone, making him a hard man to nail down when you’re trying to describe his style. This, of course, doesn’t bother Sultan in the slightest. “I think the further I go, the more honed in my sound gets. Whether it caters to a particular genre or not, I’m not exactly sure. I’ve never really thought about it too much, I just sort of write and perform the music that I like to listen to. Sometimes it’s rock ’n’ roll, sometimes it’s soul and sometimes it’s country.” These are affirming words from the crooner, who, not too long ago, lacked the confidence to write at all. While Sultan has been consistently closed-lipped regarding the politics of his split from management and his long-term collaborator Scott Wilson, it’s clear that the decision has had a huge effect on the musician’s creative drive. “In the end I had to take a lot more control and responsibility over my own career, and that is only a positive thing. [The change] was probably the best thing I’ve ever done. I was in a real rut and I felt that those relationships had sort of run their course really. I needed to make a change and I think everyone was happier for it. We weren’t in the best place - me in particular - I wasn’t writing or inspired in any way.” Lucky for us, Sultan well and truly got his writing mojo back, with the resulting album Blackbird being his most assured record to date. Featuring five of his own songs and a handful of cowrites with Alex Burnett (Sparkadia) and Pip Norman (TZU), it’s a record that plays to Sultan’s strengths, letting his voice take command on a collection of chameleon-like and soulful tracks. Blackbird saw Sultan travel to Nashville, Tennessee where he recorded in the album’s namesake studio with Jacquire King. The legendary producer - who cut his teeth on Tom Waits and helped Kings Of Leon find their world-

beating sound – was a key factor in ensuring Blackbird was a cut above Sultan’s previous two albums. Of course, there are reasons Dan Sultan has a collection of ARIA, Deadly and AIR Awards to his name, including the 2010 ARIA for Best Male Artist. But Blackbird is a different animal. As Sultan realized, there really is merit to the marriage of great production and self-satisfaction. “Working with [Jacquire] and having the freedom to create…it all kind of lined up at once. I was able to write and I was working with a great producer, so there were different elements coming together.” Of course, being friends certainly didn’t hurt when it came to 12 hour long sessions in the studio every day, admits Sultan. “We actually spoke to each other on the phone for about 40 minutes - before we even went over there and decided that we would definitely make the record with him - just to see if we would get along. I think we spoke about the record for about five minutes and the rest of the time we just talked shit. We became good friends really.” Sultan is preparing to kick-off his huge national tour as we speak to him, having given a surprise performance at Melbourne’s Ding Dong Lounge a few nights earlier as a kind of pre-tour warmup. Supporting Bruce Springsteen recently also gave Sultan the chance to lift his already stellar live-show. “It was great,” Sultan chuckles; “Overall, it’s been a great reaction. I’ve got some amazing fans and there’s really nothing better than a good crowd. They come to the shows ready to have fun and that’s a good feeling.” July 19 will see Dan Sultan bring his live show to the Westernport Hotel in San Remo, with support acts Stonefield and Way of the Eagle (DJ Set) filling the bill for what is sure to be a fun, raucous and deeply satisfying show. KEVIN BLOODY WILSON

If you’ve ever caught yourself changing the words of an innocent song into a bawdy ballad, then you can be assured that comedian songster;Kevin Bloody Wilson has had an effect on you at some stage in your life. When his debut album Your average Australian Yobbowas released in 1984, Wilson never imagined that 30 years onwards his popularity would be so prevalent that he’d be releasing his 18th album entitled Wrong Wrong Wrong, while touring the world including Australia. Growing up in Kalgoorlie inspired his comedic side. He met his wife Betty there whom later became his tour manager, doing the logistics, bookings, merchandise and much more due to her background in accountancy. He still keeps friends with his old mates from his sparkie days too. In fact it’s his friends who continually inspire him to be Kevin Bloody Wilson. He claims

they are funnier than him. “The trick to stay motivated is this. I get them together every so often and put on a slab of piss, get them drunk, then steal all their good material, that’s basically how it works.” He laughs. Jokingly he claims that the Kalgoorlie funerals were more fun that city weddings. I asked Wilson what his basic philosophy is and how he feels when people may look down their noses at him. He totally understands not every one is into his type of humour. But the jokes on them cause he goes out of his way to shock them. He can’t help himself, as he is the perpetual larrikin. In fact, tattooed on his wrist is D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F, translating to Do I look like I give a f@#k. He doesn’t care less if they have an opinion on his gigs because they are not buying his CD’s or tickets to his shows anyway. Nevertheless, Wilson has just come back from doing a month of sold out shows in America and his popularity is as strong now as it was when he began thirty years ago. Wilson’s warmth and down to earth personality along with his larrikin showmanship, natural talent and keen observation of his fellow human gives rise to his mischievous sense of rude humour. He never tries to analyse what he does. If it keeps making his mates laugh then he will continue doing it. A highlight of his career was doing his own sold out show at the London Palladium around 1997 called The Far Canal Tour. Interesting enough,his prime objective is being a good father, husband, and grandfather to his five grandchildren. He has been happily married for 44 years. This is instilled in his daughter Jenny, a talented comedian like her dad; that her two children come first. However, Jenny Talia from Australia as she is known does follow in her father’s footsteps performing bawdy songs and is currently based in Chicago. Her bawdy ballads come from the female perspective, with the likes of Camel Toe and Chocolate is Better than Sex. Wilson and I chatted and laughed for over 40 minutes. Ironically

we were both in our cars parked in random car parks, me in Carrum and he in Perth, as we conversed. He had me in hysterics when he explained the meaning behind his Born again Piss Tank album of some years back. “It’s a take on the Born Again Christians who don’t have a sense of humour. I gave up drinking for two days. During this time I got an epiphany that I cant live without alcohol.” Wilson thinks it’s a hoot when people sing their own bawdy ballads knowing full well he’s probably influenced them in some way. He grew up listening to the ‘ole dinky die ballads and was changing the words even then. For example he says, Chris Kristofferson’s song, Take the Ribbon from your Hair was changed to Wipe the Dribble from your Chin….. Wilson understands we all have the propensity to do that sort of stuff, to make it fit. Wilson is inspired by life itself but tends to follow Mark Twains thinking when it comes to religion, and that is: “Religion was invented when the first con man met the first f@#*%ng idiot.” But as far as a higher power goes, well someone has created this amazing day in Perth, he claims. Currently he’s touring Australia with his First of the Final Farewell Tours Perhaps. He laughs saying,“the trick is I’ll probably do four years of Final Tours, then take six months off. Then I’ll start with The Come Back Tours and try and do more come back tours than Farnham. Then I’ll get myself diagnosed with bipolar and do the Split up Tour, take another six months off then come back with the Reunion Tour.” He laughs roguishly. RED INK’S HOMETOWN TRIFECTA

INTERVIEW By Melinda Ransom Frankston: A word synonymous with outlandishly down putting stories shown nearly every night on national TV. Seriously – how many more drug effected, football loving, drunken teens, could come out of that dreaded station? Times – they are a changing! Time to look at the positives that this fabulous beach side suburb has produced! Time to turn our attention to………………… Red Ink. Red Ink was formed in one of the area’s premier secondary schools – Frankston High. The music teacher suggested the now lead vocalist John Jakubenko and Brendan Jones start a group together. That my friends, was the start of Red Ink. Joining them was Andrew Jolly on drums and James Munns on Bass. Fast-forward a decade this grass roots Melbourne indiepop outfit Red Ink – the band known and loved for their infectious, dance floor-ready tunes have just released the self-titled debut LP. The album is an exciting collection that sways from upbeat, energetic indie pop to atmospheric, pensive songs that leave you in a wistful daze. The group wrote and recorded the collection in Berlin with Aussie-

turned-Berlin based producer Simon Berckelman, known for his part in the legendary group Philadelphia Grand Jury. Speaking with John on a Sunday I must say was an uplifting interview. Not very often do you meet someone with a true desire to see others succeed. This was what came across from the lead singer of Red Ink. We discussed todays emerging acts; he wants all teens that are picking up a guitar, or starting up a group to remember, “you’ve just got to be good” says Jakubenko. “People appreciate good acts as opposed to cool acts; listen to the words that are you are relaying in the songs – the words tell the story; they are the depth. They essentially make you a good act”. Jakubenko believes that there is a huge range of talent on the Peninsula, culturally and musically. He commented “some of the bands best moments were playing in Frankston, a small crowd of 30 or so people. It made it just an intimate experience, just us and them”. Jakubenko noted that “it took us a few years to get through our brains not to think of the next bigger venue we would play; stop looking at Beyonce stadium events or Radio Head playing to 100,000 punters. Write good music, write good songs, just love your music and others will love it too”

Over the past decade, Red Ink have toured across Australia (multiple times) and have found success in Germany & mainland Europe. They have played in festivals, arenas and small nightclubs. Having graced the international stages of The Great Escape and Liverpool’s Sound City, the band have carved a name for themselves through their energetic live show. Remarkably, Red Ink have also built a strong following nation-wide by clocking up over a quarter of a million views on YouTube alone without any funding or label. After playing the album downloadable on iTunes flat out all weekend, I would seriously recommend you catch them at one of the Frankston shows. With the release of this album, I see more success coming to them in the future. Larger Australian and international events are on the horizon. This could be your chance to experience them live. was drinking a coffee when I found out. It was 8:30 in the morning and it was a sunny day in June. So I decided to made the most of the sun’s rare mid year appearance and took my coffee outside. I was nervous. I had an exam on later in the day and I wasn’t prepared for it. When you’re nervous you start acting differently. I had my back against the brick wall and I was crouching with my cup of Nescafé Blend 43. A coffee in one hand and my phone in the other. I’m usually a walking coffee drinker, but my nerves had the better of me on that day. It was a squat and drink kind of day. That’s when I found out. A message from my brother. “Kog, I think MJ died.” I still remember driving to that exam with tears in my eyes. Every radio station in Melbourne was playing Michael Jackson. It was beautiful. We’ve seen and heard a lot of Michael Jackson in the five years since

his death. A documentary about his doomed comeback tour This Is It which proved that as great as he once was, even Michael Jackson gets old. Jackson was booked to do 50 shows in London with a days break between each performance. That’s a ridiculous schedule for a fully fit 25 year old. Michael Jackson was 50 when he died. In the weeks leading up to the show, it is reported that Jackson told fans “I’m really angry with them booking me up to do 50 shows ... I went to bed knowing I had sold 10 dates ... I don’t know how I’m going to do 50.” Sometimes I genuinely wonder weather he had an intentional role in his own death. Even he must have known the task ahead of him was too great to accomplish. We’ve also heard new music. Let’s forget the first posthumous album Michael, which is just horrid for the most part - I swear there are songs on that album which aren’t even sung by Jackson but were finished off by voice impersonators for the sake of making cash- and turn our attention to Xscape. Xscape takes old Jackson demos and sees them re-made with modern day producers. I’m a Michael Jackson purist and I’m a fan of the album and I think Michael would be too. The lead single off Xscape is a song called Love Never Felt So Good. It reminded me of why I loved Michael Jackson in the first place and what separated him from the

rest. Many artists are able evoke melancholy, anger, nostalgia and even beauty in their work, but how many evoke joy? Joy is a rare quality in music. Joy is something we all want in our lives, but is tough to find and even harder to let in. Sometimes we’re too scared to grab it, sometimes it’s fleeting and we spend our lives searching for it. Joy lives on a knifes edge of feeling corny or disingenuous, but Michael Jackson was able to be joyful. This lies at the core of his success. Despite the subject matter, Jackson was able to create joy and put it into the world. Man in the Mirror is joyful, Rock With You is joyful, even Billie Jean is joyful. Through song and dance and the energy he created, Michael Jackson was able to put more joy into this world that most of us will ever get to experience in our lifetime. That’s what makes him special.

It’s been five years since he passed and I miss him dearly. It might sound weird to hear that, but I felt like I knew him. Everyone who loved him felt like they knew him. Rest in peace MJ. KOG RAVINDRAN

MOSIG: The Southside Crew are the boys I have mentioned earlier. A few years back we decided to give our close group of mates a name, it was Southside. We have always stuck by each other though all the highs and lows of our sport, and it’s so great to know the boys will always have your back no matter what!! The Southside boys have achieved incredible results in Supercross and Freestyle Motocross from local to national to international levels. PEARL: Who is the oldest of you brothers? MOSIG: My brother Chase is the oldest. PEARL: What is your current Supercross ranking? MOSIG: I just claimed my first ever MX1 national win on the weekend! I’m so pumped! I’m also currently running 6th in the MX nationals, with 4 rounds to go! PEARL: What other sports do you enjoy? MOSIG: I enjoy a range of different sports to help with my fitness; I love to surf, cycle, kayak and pretty much any water sport. PEARL: Any final words? MOSIG: To any of the younger generation out there, don’t hold back! Give it your all in every aspect of life! You get what you give! If you have dreams believe in them as you can achieve anything you put your heart and mind to! Keep it real!

If you’re tastes lean further toward the folk field, I’m pleased to say that The Melbourne Folk Club is continuing to flourish on Wednesday nights at Bella Union (the ballroom of Melbourne’s iconic Trades Hall on Lygon Street). Shane Nicholson will be there on July 30th and Bill Jackson, one of my under-rated song writing heroes, will be performing two weeks earlier on July 16th. Both will be previewing songs from much anticipated new albums – and both represent the kind of intelligent country music this columnist likes to spruce. Of course, every week at the Folk Club boasts a varied lineup, and punters would be well-advised to check out the likes of Cash Savage, Fraser Gorman, Al Parkinson, Tracy McNeil and The Yearlings in the month of June. Oh and, in the interests of editorial credibility, I’ve resisted the urge to make this month’s column all about my own Victorian regional tour with Dan Waters and The Weeping Willows. ADAM ECKERSLEY BAND

Southern Rock is a brand of country that doesn’t get a lot of attention these days, but for the average Australian weekend-drinker, it’s surely one of the most familiar sounds. Just think how many times you’ve heard a covers band or jukebox belt out Sweet Alabama or something by The Black Crowes (or even Kings of Leon – at least their early stuff). For me, southern rock reflects the dichotomy of country music – the coming together of the redneck aesthetic with African-American soul. It’s a potent and emotive style, usually imbued with strong musicianship, memorable riffs and powerful vocals. There haven’t been many Australian southern rock bands over the years (perhaps because the genre has such a strong American stamp on it) but for my money, Newcastle’s Adam Eckersley Band come about as close to authentic southern rock as a group of Aussies possibly could. Adam’s no stranger to the mainstream Australian country scene. He’s married to Brooke of The McClymonts, and it is via the sisterly trio this winter that Victorian audiences are most likely to gain an introduction to the debut album (appropriately titled The First Album) from the AEB. On July 27 the band will support The McClymont’s at the West Gippsland Arts Centre in Warragul, following shows the two previous nights at The Palms at Crown and The Capital in Bendigo respectively. I’m pretty sure that Eckersley is destined for bigger things within the Australian, and possibly also American, music scene – so these Victorian shows might be a good chance to jump on the bandwagon early. he line up for the 18th Queenscliff Music Festival has been announced, with The Jezabels, Xavier Rudd, The Waifs, Kasey Chambers, Stonefield and Perfect Tripod all set to take to the stage at the three day festival on 28-30 November.

we did that song, which took on a life of its own and we ended up doing it at the logics. I also think we captured the combination of Tripod and Eddie in an unexpected moment and it’s kind of nice when that happens. It just really grew out of that, “ said Hall.

Perfect Tripod combines the magnificent vocals of Eddie Perfect and Tripod members Simon Hall, Scott Edgar and Steven Gates. “It’s mostly a capella the show so it’s a hell of a lot of singing. You kind of forget when you decide to do a capella you’re basically going to be singing 100% of the time,” said Simon Hall about Perfect Tripod’s Australian Songs show. “One of you might take the lead in the song but all that means is you’re going to be singing something else the whole time, it’s wall to wall voices. For people who know Tripod’s sound and what we do on stage it’s a three part harmony and goofing around. Adding to that is Eddie’s incredible voice, it really is, like you just see people take a breath when he sings some of those low notes because it’s such a fantastic sound.”

Their Australian Songs show, which they performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and are currently performing some gigs around the country, sees Perfect Tripod rearrange Australian classics such as Hearts a Mess by Gotye, Overkill by Colin Hay, Errol by Australian Crawl and Not Pretty Enough by Kasey Chambers. Even the original artists are fans of Perfect Tripod’s arrangements. Colin Hay tweeted that he was driving through the hills of LA listening to Perfect Tripod’s album that features one of his songs, which Hall explained was pretty “lively to hear.”

Tripod and Eddie Perfect first got together for what was meant to be a one off collaboration to rearrange and perform Paul Kelly’s Meet Me in the Middle of the Air.

Individually, the members of Perfect Tripod have all graced the silver screen as well as the stage. Eddie Perfect is known for his role in Offspring and for Shane Warne the Musical, the production he wrote and starred in. Simon Hall, Scott Edgar and Steven Gates have all appeared on popular show Skithouse as well as far too many other productions and tv shows to name.

A lot of our songs are about being nerds or being in long term relationships which are pretty universal things,” said Hall. “I guess in Edinbourgh people are much more used to being an audience- they are more confident about what they like and what they don’t like and can be more vocal about it.” This led to an unfortunate incident during a performance at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival one year. “We were a bit drunk, cocky and somehow we got in the middle of Bohemian Rhapsody and just kept looping. I don’t really know how it happened but it really fell apart. It’s really hard to get back on the rails when it’s a complicated arrangement and I think someone threw something at us,” laughed Hall, ever the comedian. ACTION GEOFF ACHISON Back from the States and back in action Geoff Achison performs his solo acoustic show at the Seaford Hotel’s Sunday Session July 13. Locals love Geoff and his background tells us why. Born on Phillip Island, Achison taught himself guitar in the isolation of rural Australia and forged his own path to a successful career with an explosive blues/funk style and top notch vocals. However, Peninsula fans aren’t the only admirers Achison has earned along the way, having toured relentlessly throughout the U.K, U.S and Australia. With each country toured, our blues wizard performs his popular acoustic solo shows or enlists the best local musicians to recreate his brainchild band The Souldiggers as he goes. Forming the group, Souldiggers is meant to convey the tapping into of ones soul for honesty and truth, and this is expressed through their music and Achison’s hard work, which continued in 1994 setting up his own record label Jupiter II Records. These early recordings were received well by fans and critics, which led to him representing the Melbourne Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis winning the coveted Albert King Award for his guitar skill. he may have sauntered in slightly later usual, but winter has well and truly set in. I was going to pen a piece on bringing greenery into your home during the cooler months, but there is a far more pressing issue that needs to be addressed in relation to winter weather and the garden. Agapanthus. The word is italicized because I say it with narrowed eyes and a resentful lowered voice. I view the agapanthus as less of a common garden plant and more of a malevolent villain, and I think a public service announcement is well and truly in order now that winter - its peak-predatory season – has come around.

The genus name means flower of love, from the Greek agape, meaning love, and anthos, meaning flower. Now, research suggests that significance of the name is unclear, and let’s be honest, have you ever seen a bouquet of a agapanthus gifted on Valentines Day? No, you haven’t. I suggest that booby-trap-anthos would be a more appropriate title for this common garden-menace. You may scoff, but let’s take a closer look at this “plant” and assess my proposal. Favoured for its hardiness, the agapanthus has become the plant of choice to line our driveways. This means that you can literally run over the plant with your car and it will continue to thrive. I’ve even heard rumour of the agapanthus being atom-bomb resistant*. Once this plant is in, it is an almost impossible feat to remove, and so the torment begins. In summer, the agapanthus supposedly welcomes you home with a gorgeous sea of blue and white flowers. I’ll tell you who else like those big blooms, bees and spiders. In winter, rows of agapanthus create a beautiful green vista, particularly when coated in drizzle. Translation: the agapanthus becomes the plant version of a puddle. What’s more, the dangers of creepy crawlers and slime are not confined to the small area of the plant itself, as agapanthus leaves are like tentacles that attack. I put it to you that if you enter within a two-metre proximity of the agapanthus, it will somehow ruin your day. Yep, boody-trap-anthos.

This fact has not been verified.

A SONG IS A CITY Kav Temperley has played a major role in the success of Australian three-piece, Eskimo Joe, as both a front man and award winning songwriter.Touring and simply the passage of time brought maturity and change to Eskimo Joe. Kav was at the centre of this change, writing about his personal experiences and reflecting them in his clever turn of phrase and canny melodies on A Song Is A City. Compositions such as “Life Is Better With You”, “Smoke” and crowd favourite “From The Sea” created a new reality for the band.It was around this time Kav started intensive work on Dirt Diamond Productions, the indie record label he shares with fellow EJ band members and their manager Catherine Haridy. His focus was the development of his first direct signing, the young, enigmatic, Kathryn Rollins who completed four track EP Reckless with Kav at the Production helm. He also focused on various co-writing partnerships with artists such as Owl Eyes and Coby Marsh. BIG DAY OUT CANCELLED 22-years after its inception, the iconic Big Day Out Festival has been cancelled in both Australia and New Zealand for 2015. Permanent cancellation has yet to be confirmed, but things look bleak for the “ageing festival” with dwindling numbers in recent years. However, despite overwhelming media speculation, promoters are not ruling out a return for 2016.

SOUNDWAVE EXPANSION Festival promoter AJ Maddah has taken to Twitter to reveal massive changes to the Soundwave Festival. The event will now take place over two days, in four capital cities, over two consecutive weekends. YouTube SAYS YouTube hit the headlines across the world this week with the worst kept secret since the wedding of Kanye& Kim, confirming plans to launch a long-awaited music-subscription service, but some independent labels are refusing to sign on the online video company contracts. YouTube is using its market share push & flatten some smaller labels – mostly independents. For some of you out there wondering why would this happen – simple maths? Music + Videos = Money The story of YouTube is an interesting and very profitable one. Started by three young entrepreneurs in 2005 from a garage, it was born during the revolution of the internet. After an initial angel investment of US$3.5million they were turning over US$15million profit per month in advertising alone. Google announced on October 9, 2006, for US$1.65 billion in stock it would purchase YouTube. Effectively all of these figures mean that if you are an independent label and you don’t sign with Google, they will ban your music from the site! Names like Adele, Artic Monkeys a list of artists signed to smaller labels could be history! This is where more maths comes in; don’t sign the contract & pay the YouTube

FROM THE SONG TO THE SALE - PART 3 tips in the recording business...

with IAN PAV So we have worked out songs and have an idea for arrangement to be genre and commercially appropriate and know we have ‘enough’ of an audience to get some initial sales. Next we obviously need to look at budget and getting the funds together for the production process. I know there are constraints but the goal I try

and establish with every new client is to do as much as can, budget as high as can so quality and end product is the best it can be for your potential level of audience/sales. Sometimes you have the desire for a big budget production, but don’t have the funds you may need to wait till the money is saved, but there are a few options for getting extra funds. Detailed discussion of CD costing and funding options is too long for a column of this size but I posted full articles on both areas in May over on my wordpress blog check out info on CD costing HERE and funding options HERE. So now you have the budget, you can now work out (independently or with your producer) a project time line. May I suggest that unless you are experienced in the recording process (and even then), you allow 1,2 or even up to 4 months, more than you initially estimate for the completion of the process and CD release.

There can be unexpected delays, factors outside your control that can throw out the schedule- someone sick on the day booked, trying to fit in with mastering or studio availability, the need to rework parts after listening to a partial mix, etc. For example, locking in the pressing too early can be an issue if there is any delay to the mastering, or graphics being prepared. You need to stay flexible and not get too worked up when some of these situations arise – it happens. Therefore, for anyone doing their first CD I strongly suggest they do not lock in anything to do with a ‘launch’ or announce any definite release dates early in the process. In fact a lot of experienced independent artists wont organise a ‘launch event’ until the CD is in pressing (even if that means it occurs a few weeks after release). This way you manage expectation of your potential buyers so they aren’t disappointed before they even hear the product. Now, we are almost ready to start recording.....

This months’ classic album review comes at a very sad time, having just lost Masters apprentices front man Jim Keays to a cancer related pneumonia on Friday 13th 2014. I spoke to Jim about 3 weeks before he passed away. I advised him I was going to do a review of his 1993 solo album Pressure makes diamonds and that I required some more copies for the shop as we had long since sold out of them. He told me he was finishing off the new album he was recording and would forward the last thirty or so copies of PMD he had left in the next few weeks, which obviously didn’t eventuate. I had initially planned the album review for

At the time of its release in 1993 the opening track Waiting for the big one was regarded as the stand out track which was to be released as a single.

The remaining tracks, This song, Somebody “Turn Up Your Radio” loves you, Broken promises, Some call it love and When the ring is broken were co-written with Frank Sablotny and Darryl Mitchell as was Sleeping giant.

He was looking for some opinions as to what other tracks might be best suited for the single. I told him the album is full of singles and whilst the opening track was the obvious first choice, my favourite is Sleeping giant.

Pressure makes diamonds was an exceptionally good effort . There’s something about it that just hits the right spot. The songs are well written and recorded, the production is slick and the vocals are captivating.

Waiting for the big one was issued along with Sleeping giant as the first a single (not necessarily because of my opinion though), and shortly after that the second single This song backed with All your love was released.

Possum Records (BMG) took over the distribution and changed the cover artwork. Sometime after that the album seems to have been forgotten about.

Three of the album tracks Bridges, All your love and the title track Pressure makes diamonds were co-written with ex Masters guitarist and long time song writing partner Doug Ford.

If this album had been released in the seventies, I feel it would have been a giant of an album – which it deserves to be. In honour of Jim Keays, thanks for the great music and great memories. bayside & mornington peninsula

GEMS H: THIISS MONT Jack White Lazaretto (THIRD MAN/COLUMBIA) Jack White has released his second solo album, Lazaretto and it’s an album for the vintage Jack White fan. Lazaretto has all the typical Jack White characteristics you’ve come to know and love. Funky guitar riffs with those bluesy overtones, charismatic drumbeats that pave the way for those one-of-a-kind guitar solos that expel that trademark Jack White sound. What’s better than a fresh Jack White album straight off the press? One could argue not much but this would be untrue. Albeit there’s definitely promise in this current solitary venture, there’s still no forgetting the brilliance he once concocted. Listening to songs like ‘High Ball Stepper’ and ‘That Black Bat Licorice’ raises nostalgic memories of times gone by. White Stripes times. But it’s time to move on. It’s obvious Jack White has. Saskwatch Nose Dive (NORTHSIDE RECORDS) To sum Melbourne band Saskwatch’s album Nose Dive up in one word, it’d be fun. From opening track, ‘Give Me A Reason’ to ‘Now That We’re Alone’, there’s an undeniable need to groove. The diverse ranges of influences in Nose Dive have you gasping at the talent on offer. There’s so much quality jam-packed into this album it’ll be interesting to see what they have in stall for the future. The track to look out for is, ‘You Don’t Have To Wait’. Its smoothness is so intoxicating that you’re left gobsmacked at the brilliance of it. The lyrical majesticness of Nkechi Anele is outstanding. Her voice layers each song so perfectly, wrapping everything up in a neat little package. Nose Dive has been dropped from the heavens for our listening pleasure. HADYN LEVETT

Rita Satch Rita Satch (INDEPENDENT Emerging from Melbourne’s neo-soul scene, jazz and soul prodigy, Rita Satch, has released her second EP which sees her pop-inspired Motown reach new and exciting heights. The self-titled EP carries a fuller, more developed sound then that of her first. Her song writing has tightened up and her melodies are even more contagious and effective. Satch goes against the grain with this EP. The soul train left the mainstream station years ago so it’s a breath of fresh air to hear it. The top track on this album is ‘Love You Like I Do’. It’s captivating with its sexy bass lines, the soft, yet powerful voice and the lyrics with their ability to penetrate your body, mind and soul. Traversing the landscape of light and shadow geographically, emotionally and intellectually, the first weekend of winter found me at Shadowlands in Melbourne - an extraordinary contemporary shadow dance theatre experience, then at a fascinating illustrated lecture by Dr. Janine Burke on the healing power of art at Whistlewood in Shoreham and finally at the Flinders Art Show. Writer/comedienne Catherine Deveny shook up the Frankston Library the following week with her hilarious exposition on life and the arts with a good dollop of politics thrown in. The following weekend, the Peninsula Poets started plotting out our Soapbox Poetry events at the upcoming Zinevent and Anywhere Theatre Festival. June was rounded out making and taking paper lanterns on a mini winter lantern parade as part of Frankston’s Light Up Winter. And last but not least, I saw a fantastic theatrical production of Oliver at the Frankston Arts Centre gloriously staged and performed by PLOS Musical Productions. WOMEN’S WORK

Mornington Peninsula artist, Jacqueline Archer, designs and creates. She makes jewellery, miniature sculpture and accoutrements that some might call craft or decorative and they would be right, but there is so much more to her art than meets the eye. Intriguing societal, literary and artistic references are embedded in much of her work. Art has story and context; it is not simply pretty or utilitarian as with many crafted objects. Historically, women’s creative work was intended for usefulness in the home. Crocheting, embroidery, sewing, tatting and weaving, were all deemed decorative or purely practical, but there can be no denying the artistry in these crafts. Archer’s own work tips her hat to that painstaking dedication commenting on women’s work, place and value in society. Examining fairytales, she referenced the female archetypes found within creating a series of elaborate metal hair combs that incorporated text and images with reverence and humour. One comb asks, “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime?” Its castle shaped crown is adorned with miniatures of the Madonna, Snow White, The Wicked Queen/Stepmother, Eve with the Serpent and Rapunzel whose long blond lock hangs down the centre of the comb. In another series she created one of a kind aluminium hand fans - each individual leaf hand pierced and meticulously carved. She chose fans because of their unique link to women’s history. Over centuries past the hand fan was both a symbol of femininity and a means of communication. When freedom of speech for women was absolutely restricted, the language of the fan could

communicate everything the lady could not actually say aloud particularly where affairs of the heart were concerned. Women have communicated through art since the beginning of time, but interestingly, much of this communication took place without their actual voices being heard. Women’s work was largely underappreciated outside the home. Telling women’s stories in her own handcrafted work and talking about their history is a double pleasure for the artist. Motherhood inevitably changed Archer’s practice. She has fewer hours to work so intensely on a single piece, but years of experience as a gold and silversmith have fine-tuned her considerable skills. She now creates exquisite contemporary jewellery that often reflects her own life story. Cog rings remember her previous urban residences, intricate filigree earrings resemble the lost art of tatting, but everything she makes recognizes women’s work. After studying at Sydney College of the Arts (Bachelor of Visual Arts: Jewellery) and having her own jewellery studios in London, Sydney and Melbourne, Archer is quite happy being based on the Mornington Peninsula where her influences are the vastness of the bays and skies, the play of light on the water and her growing passion for gardening. topic HOT TOPIC: POETRY SHOULD BE SEEN NOT HEARD Poetry is a form of literature that requires reading and rereading, sometimes for years, to unpack all of its depth and meaning. It cannot be grasped in a single reading, let alone hearing it only once! So how do these upstart ‘performance poets’ claim that what they do is poetry? Well…poems also involve the musicality of language using alliteration, onomatopea, rhythm, rhyme and metre. Poetry employs imagery to convey story. While the audience at a reading or poetry slam may wish to hear the poem again or read it on the page, performance poets tailor their work to be immediately accessible. It is a skill so listen up. Jim Wormwold may not match James Bond for his glamorous life as a secret agent, but Greene’s character makes the most of a difficult situation to become a big player in pre-revolutionary Havana. A modestly successful vacuum cleaner salesman, Wormwold is unwillingly recruited to keep an eye on activities in Cuba for the British government. At first unhappy to get involved, he soon sees the opportunity to provide for his demanding daughter the lifestyle she so craves. When he has nothing to report, he soon lets his imagination go wild and the resulting excitement he creates in London and Havana soon spins out of control.

Art pops up: Western Port artists received valuable exposure at the launch of The Local Creative ‘pop-up shop’ art precinct in High Street Hastings on Friday 27th June. A range of artworks including paintings, carved figures, wall hangings, quality furniture, wood turnings and rope work lined the walls and floors and intrigued guests. Chamber of Commerce marketing and promotions manager Angie Baker, pictured with artist Will Palmer, said the opening was a “great success”. Film and blogging mash-up famously in Advanced Style. What started as a blog four years ago, with Ari Seth Cohen photographing stylish women over 50 on the streets of New York, is now referred to as a movement. His blog became so popular that it is now a best-selling book, many of his ‘stars’ have TV roles or their own ad campaigns and there’s even an Advanced Style colouring book. Advanced Style the documentary brings these women to life even further with as many quotable quotes as there are enviable outfits. One of my favourites comes from Zelda Kaplan aged 95, “I think good style improves the environment for everyone,” or “I never wanted to look young, I wanted to look great” from Joyce Carpati. Looking to older women as style icons is so anti-fashion that of course the fashion world is taking notice - all great fashion movements have started on the streets after all. In a time when magazines try to tell us the Duchess of Cambridge is a style hero (ho-hum) it is not hard to see why the world is crying out for these dames. Anyone old enough to have been into Brit Pop when it was a thing in the 90’s will not be disappointed with Pulp: A Film About Life Death and Supermarkets from Florian Habicht. The band are originally from Sheffield, a Frankston-type town three hours North of London, and this film is as much about Sheffield as it is about Pulp. All the action takes place on



 

December 8, 2012, the day of the Pulp reunion show for their home crowd. Interviews with band members are littered with stories from locals and fans, some of them in supermarkets. We get to understand how being ‘commoners’ really informed Pulp’s work and obviously their biggest hit Common People. And how Jarvis Cocker struggled with fame and losing his membership to the common people club that made him what he was. The band seemed to be all too aware of the danger of reforming and the potential for it to be a major bummer - we have all been to a re-union concert like that. But they just bring it, the crowd goes mental and I really wish I was there. The full Melbourne International Film Festival program guide will be released on Wednesday, July 11. SHAK ESPEAREA ESP EA RE AN N SHADE S OF GREY SHADES GRE Y Contemporary theatre company Bell Shakespeare is touring with their adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry V. This production, directed by Damien Ryan, was inspired by a true story. During the 1941 Blitz, a group of British boys spent 57 consecutive nights in a bomb shelter. As inspiration and distraction from the horrors, they performed weekly plays for the other shelter occupants. It is thought Henry V was one of these plays. Ryan uses their story to scaffold his production. He brings the audience into the intimacy of the bunker. Henry V addresses many moral shades of grey. With our continued vulnerability to clever communication, susceptibility

to political spin and the manipulations of nationalism, sadly, it seems little has changed in 400 years. Armed conflict still plagues humanity, yet the profound power of language can also galvanize people. Henry’s infamous ‘band of brothers’ speech led his outnumbered troops to victory against a superior French army in the Hundred Years’ War Battle of Agincourt. This is the territory Henry V traverses. UNPACK THIS! Anger Management seems an odd topic for a comedy, but that’s what makes Unpack This! so unique. Written and directed by former Neighbours nice guy, actor Geoff Paine, this is the flipside of neighbours based on his stranger than fiction actual experience. One fateful night, provoked by his real life neighbour from hell, Paine snapped and head-butted him while an onlooker sang the theme song from Neighbours. Arrested and ordered to attend anger management classes, this play is based on that experience though Paine has changed the names ‘to protect the idiots’.

Things only get weirder when the classes begin and the social workers in charge of keeping things under control start to unravel. Each character is based on a real person and the live audience is addressed as part of the workshop. Fictional Trev and Lorraine use real life anger management techniques to help six men, played brilliantly by three actors, but their efforts are met with mixed results as the ‘listening and respecting’ becomes harder to do. An explosive role reversal unravels the whole group to hilarious effect. Laugh out loud comedy about the challenges of anger management. Bayside Youth Services and the Boombox FReeZA committee have announced the competing bands in the lead up to their annual Battle of the Bands. Competing at this year’s battle will be Groove Platoon, Attack at Greenwood, the String Theory, Beneath the Lies and Moss. Bayside are offering the audience a mix of genres on the night, with these incredibly talented bands performing funk, indie, post-hardcore, Latin, and more! With Yung Phily announced as MC for the event, there will also be extra entertainment such as prizes, give-aways, and a fully stocked canteen. The battle will be held on August 15 at the Brighton Town Hall, where multiple artists will battle for the chance to progress through all battle rounds in order to win the final FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands. Frankston Freeza Committee, Fresh Entertainment, have now announced the competing bands and headlining acts for its annual Battle of the Bands heats. Fresh Entertainment will host two heats this year, the first to be held on July 12, headlined by Beautiful Beasts, with Shoot the Messenger, DTSD, Cryptic Jim, Melanie Grace, Pocketwatch Knight, and Wild Nite, set to compete. On July 19, the second heat will take place, with Swim Through Seasons headlining, and Static Revenue, The Escapist, Cyprus, Flesh of the Earth, and Along Shorelines competing. Cash and prizes are up for grabs, and winners will proceed to the regional finals! These heats will be held at the Seaford Community Hall where past battles have been held, with winners including Myyth, The Fuzzbirds, Blackwater Riff and Astral Flight. THE BLOOMING ENDLESS HEIGHTS The distinct splice and dice sound of melodic hardcore band Endless Heights remains unrivalled. Off the back of their late 2013 release New Bloom, Endless Heights joined the line up of last months Earthwalker National Tour, possibly some of the biggest shows this Sydney band has seen, the bands can do attitude and friendly nature are effortlessly carrying this talented group of friends into the big leagues of the hardcore scene, and its not hard to see why. Since establishment in 2009 Endless Heights sound has adapted and grown into what it is today, a combination of many genres in a five piece package of punk perfection, from the euphoric guitars to the rhythmic drums, Endless Heights is definitely worth a listen for anyone looking for some Australian hardcore bands to support. PEARL managed to catch up with the hardcore quintet during their shows in Melbourne for an interview.

PEARL: Hey Guys! Tell us your name and your roles in the band. Joel Martorana: I’m Joel and I sing JemSiow: I’m Jem and I play guitar Julian Diaz: I’m Diaz and I play drums Matt Jones: I’m Matt and I play Bass Christian Hrdina: I’m Christian and I play guitar PEARL: So how are the shows going on the Earthwalker Tour? Diaz: Ridiculous, we’re not used to this at all, PEARL: Are these the biggest shows you all have played? Siow: Some of the biggest PEARL: That’s great! So has your fan base grown being on the tour and the release of New Bloom? Martorana: I suppose our fan base has grown from the hardcore scene particularly and we’ve acquired bits and pieces of everyone, which is pretty cool to see. PEARL: So what artists would you say influenced New Bloom? Siow: Well Christian and I write most of the music and its influenced by a lot of different stuff: punk music, hardcore music, indie, rock and stuff like that. PEARL: We’ve noticed a change in the style between Dream Strong, Lady Wisdom and New Bloom,can you tell us what inspired that change? Siow: It wasn’t just that we were trying to change or anything, it was just that when we started the band we were young and the only thing we’d known was that we wanted to play music together so music writing just came naturally and our tastes have changed and developed as we’ve got older, and that’s just reflected in the music I guess PEARL: You can definitely hear the maturing of the music. What would be your favorite songs to play live? Siow: Honest Life. Martorana: Yeah that’s probably a favorite Jones: I actually like Son Of Thunder Martorana: Me too, is a bit harder to sing live but its so much fun PEARL: Son of Thunder is one of our favorites too. Do you have any advice for up and coming musicians? Martorana: Keep playing shows and be picky about who you play with if you can, and

be nice because your friends end up turning around and putting you on more shows, which is what happened fo us, and that’s really the best part about it, you get to play with friends. Siow: Don’t be picky, do what you want to do though, do only what you want to do, splice it up. Diaz: Dream Strong man. PEARL: Its great to meet a band with such positivity! Since we’re halfway through 2014, do you have an insight to what we can expect from Endless eights? Siow: We’re going to go overseas this year, and we’re going to go on tour more. Martorana: We’re going to write something as well. PEARL: We’ll keep the readers updated on that for sure, so our final question for you guys, who is your dream band to play with and where do you aspire to visit? Diaz: Metallica. Jones: I always wanted to play with Misery Signals, but we kind of already did that at break the ice. Siow: We want to travel everywhere! Bayside’s own Ocean Grove touched down on home soil last month heading down to Bar 12 to play a show along side some of our up and coming talent. These hometown heroes started out strong with their new single ‘Backbone’ that set the room’s energy on fire. This powerhouse of local hardcore lent us two of their five members, Dale Tanner (bassist) and Matt Kopp (guitarist) to tell us a little more about the band and what we can expect to see from them in the future. First thing we needed to know was how Ocean Grove formed? Well starting out at a local high school Matt Kopp and Jimmy Hall (guitarist) started playing covers of bands such as Avenged Sevenfold in their high school assemblies. Completely unaware of what the future held for these two, Hall and Kopp recruited Luke Holmes who took position as vocalist. Searching for a bassist, Luke threw close friend (just about the only competent musician with similar taste he knew) Dale Tanner’s name into the mix and the rest is history. Tanner’s inductioninto the group maximised their potential, after filtering through drummers to finally take on Sam Bassal as drummer and form what we know today as Ocean Grove. Why the name Ocean Grove? The band describe themselves as simple guys, so naturally they were drawn to a simple name, since Kopp and Holmes holiday on the west coast, a nearby town in Ocean Grove seemed a fitting name for the band. While the name has taken on several meanings to the band, it’s generally seen as a metaphor for the place between your obligations and freedom. Inspired by the late 90s to early 2000s sound, Ocean Grove draws most of their inspiration from bands like Korn, Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine and Limp Bizkit. This band defines their sound as experimental hardcore, which in some cases can set them apart from other bands. Their song ‘Overshadow’ combines many aspects of the hardcore genre, going from their opening lines straight into a breakdown that instantly contrasts the spoken word with the heavier and harsher sections of the music. In contrast ‘Backbone’ really stays true to their inspiration of Rage Against The Machine, having a recognizable eerie guitar sound which adds a layer of intrigue to this particularly grungy track. The songs that this band loves to play are the songs that get everyone up and moshing, particularly Enigma, which is an especially raucous song from their Outsider EP. Of course we made sure to ask the boys their advice for up and coming musicians, to which they said“Do it for the right reasons, because you love the music and you love the people who you’re in the band with”. These boys’ love of music is extremely evident in their stage presence, their constant smile and energy whilst preforming which truly displays their love of music. So what can you expect to see from Ocean Grove in the second half of 2014? Well Kopp and Tanner have told us there is no block on creativity, and judging by Backbone we can expect good things from whatever these boys release. Did you miss them at Bar 12? When you mention these words in context of the world of punk and hardcore one band in particular immediately comes to mind. Hailing from Buffalo, New York Every Time I Die’s 7th professional record proves to all listeners of music that even in this world of heavily democratised music a band can still surprise you with the use of their own instruments. Never fully knowing what will come next ‘From Parts Unknown’ delivers on every aspect of expert musicality as they provide listeners with great punk sing along hooks and erratic tempo changes that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to end. The controlled chaos within their music and especially in tracks such as ‘Decayin With the Boys’ and ‘El Dorado’ make this a viable early candidate for album of the year. 4.5/5 Jesse Lane

Their A distinctive sound that has been referred to as ‘happy music to get d drunk to’ pretty much sums it up. Naturally, the audience is very d iimportant to them, demonstrated in their aim to read the crowd and play ‘the right track at the right moment’ and I must say their a rrecent show at Thick as thieves 5th Birthday at Revolver was no exception. e You guys are back in Australian playing some shows, how’s it Y been so far? b Do you enjoy coming down under? D Yo! we really like Ozzy, especially Melbourne. It´s our third tour Y now so we know some places & nice people from the past tours. n Every time it´s a warm, peaceful and familiar atmosphere, we E need to come back again! n You played at the Thick as Thieves 5th birthday this month at Y Revolver - you were both on fire! How was the show? R Of course, it was amazing! Revolver and it´s crowd is really O special, and always into the music. We really enjoy it every time s when we´re there as DJs or just as guests. It was also an honour w ffor us to play on the birthday party of our Australian agency. Thick As Thieves is a great team and make a lot of tours for big T iinternational artists so of course it was really special for us to be tthe one international act who played on their party. How do you find the crowds in Australia, are they different H when you compare them to back home? w The crowd in Australia made a big step in their musically T development. On our first tour a lot of clubs were ruled by electro d house and the harder stuff so it was sometimes a bit tricky for h us to do our thing but in the past years till now, it feels like being u at home. Also in Europe you’ve got different crowds, clubs and a tterritories where some tracks are bigger than others, but every ttime we just play the music we like and fit for the moment. Mostly the t crowd all over the world likes it. I read in an interview in the early days you guys in a formative sense were influenced by the sounds of Fatboy Slim, Chemical s Brothers and Gang Starr - who do you guys draw inspiration B from now? f Our O whole life is ruled by music. We produce & listen to different kinds of music, have our own record label and our own club in our k hometown so the everyday lifetime is inspiration enough for us. h What can fans expect this year - apart from touring are you W working on any new music or a new album? w We W remixed Tube&Berger´s “Imprint Of Pleasure” & Mighty Oaks “Just One Day” which will be released in the near future, working “ on o a new single for our label “Hommage” and are still working on our o second album which will be released in 2015.

I AM HARDWELL He was one of Future Music Festival 2014’s most highly anticipated headliners, and the world’s number one DJ didn’t disappoint – delivering euphoric, mind-blowing sets that wowed fans across the country. Now, one of dance’s most exciting EDM producers, Hardwell, returns to Australia this spring for three enormous outdoor solo shows, bringing his ‘I AM Hardwell’ world tour to our shores. DJ heavyweight Robbert van de Corput, also known as Hardwell, has been on a steady rise to the top ever since he was first signed to a major Dutch label as a teenager, playing in clubs across the country before he was even legally allowed in their doors.

Now in his mid-twenties, Hardwell jumped five places from 2013’s poll position to take out the crown in DJ Mag’s recent Top 100, thanks to colossal hits such as ‘Show Me Love vs. Be’ and ‘Zero 76’ (with Tiesto). Hardwell’s remixes of Rihanna’s ‘Where Have You Been’ and Krewella’s ‘Alive’ have been stratospheric, whilst his remix of Example’s ‘Say Nothing’ (in collaboration with fellow countryman Dannic) reached the number one spot on charts throughout Europe. Ásgeir – Heimförin (Going Home) Singer/songwriter, ÁsgeirTrausti, brings a new meaning to the word tranquil. Whether you listen to the record with it’s English vocals or take a more worldly approach and get to know the original-Icelandic lyrics, you will have it on repeat! One of few songs, with the ability to put an audience to sleep (in the most sincerest of ways.) This mastermind manipulates “bassy” synths and contorts unusual brass horns along with his voice full of emotion and soothing piano work to make you melt. His whole album really does warm your heart! BANKS – Drowning (Lido Remix) Keeping it Nordic. Norwegian producer, ‘Lido’, has reworked vocals from U.S singer/ songwriter known as ‘BANKS’.His take on the original song has an “Australian Sound” feel, a likening to ‘Wave Racer’ crossed with ‘Cosmo’s Midnight’. “Wavy” synths infused with plucky strings &androgynous vocals adding depth to the mix, this track screams FEEL GOOD!

Dom Dolla – XS DISCO MIX A soothing House mixtape from Dom Dolla put together for the boys down at XS Disco. RÜFÜS – This Summer (RÜFÜS Remix) “An oldie but a goody!” Vocals pitched down mixed with the original vocals from front man, Tyrone Lindqvist, makes this “remix” a summer anthem (as the name suggest.) Industrial percs giving the song a grungy introduction are soon opposed by uplifting synth chords and plucks, backed with a funky bass line. This tune, unlike some of their others, is a dance floor jam. Perfect for early evening nightclub sets and getting you in the mood for a solid drinking sesh! Kilter – They Say With frequent air time on “the j’s” and his name in large font on flyers all over the country you can understand why ‘Kilter’ is BLOWING UP! The mixture of female and male vocals, morphed with steel drums, hardstyle kicks, feel-good chords and (what many like to call) “dolphin synths”, make ‘They Say’ an all time electronica track! The percussion work is flawless and if you’ve seen a live set by this genius, you’ll realise why!

Listen Out 2014: party redefined Listen Out is the antidote to many of the things you don’t like about bigger music festivals. It is a carefully handcrafted party, with a killer lineup of the dance music that matters and a philosophy of best, not biggest. Say goodbye to endless timetable clashes, long hikes to the 12th stage and spending your day with several thousand people you can’t relate to. The boutique dance festivalhas dropped its rather impressive lineup yet again, with plenty of dance-friendly musicians and producers heading our way with the Melbourne show on October 4 at The Royal Botanic Gardens. Headlining the all-star lineup is none other than multi-award winning Sydney producer Flume. Joined by Melbourne’s chilltronica star Chet Faker, who is currently on a massive national tour in support of his long-awaited (and ARIA-topping) debut album, Built On Glass. Topping the international contigent on the Listen Out 2014 lineup is enigmatic dance producer Zhu (whose breakout single ‘Faded’ was used to soundtrack the Listen Out teaser video), aswell as downtempo pioneer Four Tet, fellow London sonic crafter Shlomo, as well as electronic duoBondax and a live DJ set from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – both also making the trip from the UK.

TAKE FIVE, LESS IS MOAR Blake Rayment or here known as ‘Less is Moar’. A maverick of techno categorization ‘Less is Moar’ has a flair for driving underground mixing and a strong passion for music. Growing up with influences from all styles and genres of music since a kid, it was then in his late teens he ignited an interest in the minimal/techno scene. Major influences such as Boris Brejcha, Victor Ruiz, Groove Delight, Alex Stein and Alok all pushing his desire to spin tracks. He first took control behind the decks a mere 18 months ago, which has led to him moulding his own sound and style through residencies at ridiculously late hours of the morning. Featuring track releases through Berlin Aufnahman, Pop Rox Muzik, Twisted Plastic, PhetHouse Records to name a few and having supported some of the biggest minimal/techno artists such as Avrosse, Droplex, Jus Deelax. So how did it all begin? It all began roughly around December 2012 when a good friend of mine, and fellow producer asked me to come around to his place and he’ll teach me a few things in regards to producing. One thing leads to another and we had written a few tracks together and sparked my ambition to make tunes! Before that, I mainly used to listen to a lot of heavy metal bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Parkway Drive, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold etc. Who was your inspiration on the way up? Quite a lot of the producers coming out of Brazil, Sao Paolo, at the moment are great for inspiration: names such as Alex Senna and Bruno Magri are a couple that are doing well at the moment. Who taught you the tricks of the trade? Or are you selftaught? Initially when I started I received a handful of lessons from Zoolanda, as well as my good friend Matt Haigh (City Keys) but the rest I have learnt from watching many tutorials on YouTube which have been super helpful. What part of producing do you find the most challenging?

Umm… tough question! Coming up with the initial idea is always hard. I find that once you have a bass-line down, the rest of it sort of just flows! Favourite gig and why? My favourite gig… would be a toss between my first ever set at Revolver and Tramp Jungle. I think my first gig at Jungle would take the cake as I really got to jam out all my favourite tracks.
