Happy Holidays from the Peach Team
Oh, man, it’s been a year already? The year has gone so fast! Welcome to the Holiday Edition of Peach Magazine, the first and only Pixar fan publication. So much has changed ever since the launch issue back in April - the magazine has been completely redesigned, there is a new editorial team, and last but certainly not least, Peach is now part of the Pixar Planet network, joining the Planet’s subsidies, the highly-active Pixar Planet forums, Upcoming Pixar - the leading Pixar news blog on the internet, and Radio Pixar - the first and only Pixar podcast. We are so excited to have a new home at the Planet, and I hope you’ll enjoy this exciting new partnership as much as we do. It has been a big year for Pixar fans, with, most notably, the release of Pixar’s 10th film, Up. We had discussed, debated, and anticipated the feature film before its release in the United States on 16th of May. Pixar had created another truly great film www.pixarplanet.com
again and has been acclaimed both critically and fanatically. Up is now out on video release on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Copy in the US, and will coming soon in stores around the world next year. As a proud owner of a copy myself, I encourage you to get a copy when you can! In this issue, we talk about the upcoming Pixar film, Toy Story 3. The Toy Story franchise is an important part of Pixar, not excluding the fact that Toy Story was Pixar’s break into the film industry. A two-page spread is contained right after the jump. This issue has two interviews for your holiday reading pleasure one from game developer Sam Been (Mygames19), who has developed the Wall-E Fangame, re-released for the Christmas holidays, the other by possibly the biggest Up fan, Chris Nuse (ffdude1906), who talks about how Up has literally changed his life. This issue also premieres the
launch of an all-new section, called Planet Fanwork, displaying the creativity of fellow Pixar Planet users. Filled with artwork and fanfiction, it is a must-see for any Peach reader. As always, we have the Municiberg Reporter, powered by the great folks at Upcoming Pixar, and the Fun & Games Page, where you can test out your trivia skills with the challenging Pixar Quiz. Up’s Closed Captions Conundrum What happens when a marketing scheme goes wrong? People get angry. That’s exactly what happened last week when consumers discovered the lack of special features on rental copies of Up. Although this bonus material cut is quite unfortunate, especially when we’re talking about a Pixar DVD, it makes sense in a marketing perspective. So when Disney decided to add only the movie and scene selection (no shorts or anything else) to rental versions of Up, they weren’t counting on a big controversy. Instead they figured viewers would love the movie so much that they’d go out and buy the Blu-ray/DVD. I’m sure that would be the case normally, unfortunately for those with hearing impairments it was a different kind of disappointment… In the frenzy of (somewhat understandable) feature cutting, the Disney folks accidentally left out closed captioning! Those who are hard of hearing and can only enjoy a film properly in their home theatre would not be able to access this expected essential. The cut is quite shocking since most people wouldn’t consider captions as part of the special features repertoire. Disney insists it was a unintentional mistake and promises to fix the issue as soon as possible.
Partly Cloudy: Best Short Film? The future looks golden (like a sunny summer day) for Partly Cloudy! Of course, I’m making a reference to a certain golden statuette that Pixar’s latest theatrical short will possibly be in the running for. Yup, that means the Best Animated Short Film Oscar category has been shortlisted and, as usual, Pixar is being considered. Partly Cloudy is among nine other short ‘toons which were selected out of 37 qualifying submissions this year. The other nine shorts up for consideration include The Cat Piano, French Toast, Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, The Kinematograph, The Lady and the Reaper, Logorama, A Matter of Loaf and Death, Runaway, and Variete. Some are saying that Pete Sohn’s directorial debut is not just a sure bet for nomination, but a clear favorite to win. Can’t say I’m surprised, after all it’s sweet and has gotten a lot of exposure. Let’s hope for the best!

You know the awards season is in full force when Golden Globes nominations are announced around this time of year! Pixar’s 10th film, Up, was nominated for two awards, Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score! Here’s the competition Up will face for the HFPA’s award, also watch out for commentary below: • Best Animated Feature Film: Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Princess and the Frog, Up • Best Original Score — Motion Picture: Michael Giacchino, Up; Marvin Hamlisch, The Informant; James Horner, Avatar; Abel Krozeniowski, A Single Man; Karen O. and Carter Burwell, Where the Wild Things Are Pixar is no stranger to the Animated category, winning consecutively since Cars. But even though it’s refreshing to know that our favorite studio wasn’t forgotten at this major awards ceremony, many still feel it could’ve gotten more recognition. It is of note that Up didn’t land Best Picture in neither the Drama nor the Comedy or Musical sections because there are rules confining it to Best Animated Film. This probably has to do with the fact that animation is unfortunately still seen as its own genre by some. At least Up has a good chance to shine in a year of outstanding animated fare! Congratulations to Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Jonas Rivera, John Lasseter, Michael Giacchino and the rest of the Up team on these momentous nominations! Winners will be announced on January 17th, 2010, televised live on NBC.

Run Like the Wind... (again)
“To Infinity and Beyond!” That is Buzz Light-
year’s famous maxim, and to infinity and beyond it is as Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye & the rest of the toy gang set out for adventure again in Pixar’s eleventh film, Toy Story 3, coming out in 2010. The toys may have not grown up, but Andy has, and they saw it coming. In Toy Story 2, Stinky Pete the Prospector stated that Andy will grow up, and Woody shrugged it off, saying that he wouldn’t miss it for the world. And he hasn’t. Many years on, Andy has grown up, and is setting off for college. The toys were supposed to be destined for the attic, but they were accidentally thrown away and mistaken for rubbish, and they find themselves in a day-care centre. It may seem like toys being in a day-care centre would be fine in a human perspective, but for the toys themselves, it is a sentence to hell. Preschool children sucked, chewed, and abused our poor plastic protagonists, which gives a whole new meaning to “manhandling”! So, in true Roundup style, the toys set off on a quest to bust themselves out. But disaster strikes for the toys - Buzz accidentally damages himself during the escape. The toys instinctively try to reset Buzz, but with a consequence – Buzz reverts to his old “manufactured” space-ranger self, and loses his memory. Even more bizarre is that the reset process, along the way, reset him to a version for the Spanishspeaking market, complete with flamenco dancing! Adventure, drama, and, of course, comedy is sure to ensue.

The well-known voices of Woody (Tom Hanks), an over-zealous, arrogant but kind-at-heart cowboy plush, and Buzz (Tim Allen), a once-delusional space ranger plastic figure, makes a return, offering their voices to our favourite characters. Joan Cusack, who plays the role of the enthusiastic cowgirl Jessie, also makes a return, along with John Ratzenberger, who voices Hamm the piggy bank. Other notable voice actors who joins the animated feature include Wallace Shawn (Rex), Jeff Garlin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kristen Schaal. One noticeable difference with the voice line-up is with Slinky, a slinky dachshund who is loyal to Woody. In the previous two movies, the late Jim Varney had voiced Slinky. As he has passed away, actor Blake Clark will be providing the voice for the toy. While this could have some authenticity issues with the film, Pixar Planeteers have stated that Clark provides a very realistic imitation of Varney’s voice and that many Planeteers “did not notice any difference” between both voices. The film will be featured in Disney Digital 3D, following the suit of Pixar’s last film, Up, and also complimenting the re-releases of the prequels which were released in 3D. Look out for the release of Toy Story 3 in cinemas at June 18th in the US, June 24th across Europe and July 23rd in Australia. How did you design the characters of the movie in this game? The easy part was already done for me. Mygames19, thanks for taking the time to talk for Peach today. So you are creating a Wall-E based fan game, where you got the idea from? The original idea came to me after my second viewing of the film. During the credits roll, you see an 8-bit versions of all of the characters moving around. Seeing that made me wonder what I could do with them.. And, next thing I know, I had created a basic game engine based on the film!
So, you watched Up, and came out of the cinema non-stop raving about it. Due to this, you say you’re the biggest fan of Up. Sorry to “pop your balloon”, but you just got thrumped. Massively. Meet ffdude1906 - he deserves the title fair and square - he watched the movie in the cinemas 50 times. Phileas sits down with the undesputed biggest fan of Up, and how the movie changed his life.

As we see in your fandom, Up does mean a lot to you. Has this movie changed your life, and if so, it what ways is it changed? I think it definitely has. For the first few viewings, I found a couple things in the film I can relate to, most of all Russell’s personality, and to an extent, his personal dilemmas. (if you’ve seen the film, you probably understand what I’m getting at, but it’s a personal thing). However, several viewings in, I started to watch the movie for everything it had to offer, and I just constantly find myself blown away at Pixar’s storytelling ability, and how incredibly rich and deep the characters are. It took me in so much that I just could not stop watching it. Hence, the constant repeat viewings. I also find myself watching movies much differently, paying a lot more attention to the story and characters than I ever have before, it’s put a spin on my perspective on films. Also, it’s turned me into a bit of a movie buff, I wasn’t as into movies in general before. What do you find so enticing and different about Up? What makes this unique compared to other Pixar films, or, even more so, other films in general? The biggest draw from Up for me is in the story and the characters. Carl’s arc in particular just fascinates me, he’s by far my favorite character, probably of all time. The subtle, but highly symbolic nuances in the film, such as him talking to the house as if it were Ellie, how he holds the mailbox and all the knick knacks in the house sacred, just those pieces of his life that he holds dearly show an incredibly deep level of emotion that is played on screen marvelously. Russell proved to be a surprisingly deep character as well, with his motivations being founded in more serious issues than I think anyone expected, and his relationship that he develops with Carl is something I seriously love to watch (which is one reason I want the movie to keep going at the end). It becomes something more than a standard buddy film, and there’s an incredible love story in to boot. It’s all just beautifully done. In regards to how it’s different from other films, I’d say the emotional strength of the film makes it stand out, but it’s applied in a very interesting and thoroughly entertaining way, being amidst wild circumstances and ridiculous characters. Still, the most appealing parts of the movie are the more touching ones. Sure, you could argue that other films are more powerful, but I can’t view them as such, I think it might be a personal thing. In all honesty, I’m surprised at how much I’ve grown to love this movie, I didn’t think it was possible to love something so much, or to create something so breathtaking. Pixar seriously outdid themselves. You have made a lot of endeavours, some quite bold, to make your fandom of Up known out there, especially to Pixar. What makes you so motivated to make these endeavours? For one thing, I think it comes from the fact that I just cannot get enough of the movie. I literally love it so much, I feel obligated to do things like pay full price for every ticket, and I hope what I sent to Pete in the letter will put into perspective for him just how much Up has just blown me away, I think Pixar needs to take note of just how incredible the stuff they do is. (from page 13) Shrek that put some amazing films to shame in earnings, but I doubt Shrek is capable of getting anywhere near as close to anyone as Up has for me. It’s not something that can be represented by earnings, it has to be said. It’s absolute genius, and they NEED to know how compelling and influential these stories are. The general populous should know as well, I mean, I’ve practically been a walking billboard for Up, hehe. Up has played a significant role in the development of your Pixar Fan-ism. What would you think how life would be different if you did not discover Up? I’ve thought about that before, and honestly, it wouldn’t be as bright as it has turned out. I’d probably still be sitting in my friend’s dorm plucking away at programming homework I seriously don’t want to do. In regards to this particular question, it has a lot to do with me switching my career goals. I know now that I would much rather be doing something creative and more influential than programming video games (not that video games aren’t creative and influential. They are, but the programming side was starting to wear me out). Doing things like animating, drawing, and developing stories to tell just sits so much better with me, it’s a lot more enjoyable and satisfying than what I originally planned to do. Also, being a part of what Pixar does would make me the happiest guy alive. It would be amazing to be a part of such an incredible team. Also, Up in general just makes my day a heck of a lot better, I’m stuck with a smile plastered onto my face when I’m watching it (unless I’m crying, of course)
noticed that a theater out of town was still playing it. I jumped right on it for the 26th. After that, I waited 2 weeks, checked the dollar theater, no luck. The week after, I pulled up to the dollar theater, saw that beautiful 2 letter word on the marquee, and threw a euphoric tantrum in my car. Best screening of a movie I think I will ever have. After being away from it for 3 weeks, I couldn’t help but literally cry for the first 30 minutes of the movie because I was so enamored to be sitting in front of it again. You have said in your video that Up has changed your career path, which is quite astonishing. How do you see your future looking as an aspiring animator? I’m seriously excited to start heading that direction, the curriculum for animation and illustration looks incredible, homework I’d wanna do, hehe. Of course, I’m expecting a lot of hurdles, but they’re all there for a reason, for me to learn from. My progression in my drawing skills has showed a bit of promise (not to toot my own horn, but I’ve come really far in 4 months) and I feel like I’ve always been a fast learner, but I have to be really interested in what I’m doing. That doesn’t seem like a problem though, needless to say, I’m very interested in animation. I think things are gonna turn out really well, I just have to keep at it. Thanks Chris for taking the time to sit down with Peach today. Thank you, it was my pleasure.
You have seen Up 50 times, which is an astonishing feat! How is the experience of repeatedly watching the movie in the cinemas? Has it, in any way, changed your perception of the film by watching it so many times? My experience in the theater has always been a good one. Of course, it fluctuates, depending on the day, but every viewing has been an absolute treat. The biggest change in how I viewed the movie was early, I just enjoyed it as much as any Pixar film the first time, it wasn’t until the second and third that I started getting really sucked in. However, my best, no question, was the 27th viewing. At that point, I had seen it 25 times, then there was about a 2 week gap, and I

Us Pixar fans are typically the creative type, naturally because Pixar is so creative. Here, each week, we show off a couple Pixar Planeteers their creative side and showcase their work. This is a new section that will be a regular feature in every forthcoming Peach episode. This issue, we have Mitch and Violet Parr. Mitch, with an animation background, is very fluent with the pencil and has an array of pencil-drawn artwork with numerous Pixar characters in her collection. As you can tell, Russell is currently her favourite character.
Violet Parr is a newcomer to Pixar Planet, and is very passionate about The Incredibles, or, more specifically, Violet. Vi has also an array of drawings and her graphics thread is quite a popular one. Violet currently draws in pencil and colors digitally. 16 peach December 2009

Fanfiction of the Month The Incredibles, Al-Bob
Downtown Los Angeles never forgot the service that The Parr family did. Shortly after the heroic save the entire Parr family and even Frozone got a warm and gracious reception at the Governors house. The Governor vowed to let the Parr family become once again the cities superhero family. He also promised to aid them with a new house and even a job for Mr. Parr. The Parr family got national news spots on all the major news organizations. Every time they would get on they would talk about how they worked together and how the importance of family was key to their survival. But soon the family settled back into the slow ordinary life they had done before the incident. Although Frozone was reported as dead there were small tidbits of Syndrome impersonators recklessly running around Los Angeles. Thankfully the Parr's were silently and secretly moved from their house into a brand new one settled on top of the hills on the outskirts of Los Angeles. This house was much better then their old house. Each room was large and spacious. The ceilings were high which was new for the time. The Parr's loved this feature and especially the space which Jack-Jack loved to run around in. Soon life settled down. One day after reading the newspaper Bob Parr happened to notice a column in the news section... Incredibles Take Down Villain The Parr family continued their hero work last night with the defeat and arrest of Baron Von Ruthless. Caught in the act of robbing the State bank the Parr family quickly dispensed of Baron through the aid of Frozone. Although there were no eye-witnesses some nearby cameras caught the Parr family entering through the open door. Speedster helped nab the car which ran away once the family arrived. The Veterans Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl encountered Baron while Invisiforce became invisible to take down the henchmen at the back door. Shortly after the defeat of baron by Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible Speedster arrived with the police. Baron will be charged on Sunday with Attempted Robbery and Resisting Supers. The city of Los Angeles and the Mayor would like to send their thanks to the Incredibles for helping nab this wanted criminal. Bob Parr silently put the paper down. Sighing to himself and looking around he finally spotted the remote for the TV. Flicking the TV on he searched around for something to watch. Soon Dash came flying into the room having heard the TV go in inside of his bedroom. Behind him Violet came out as well. “Watcha gonna watch dad?” Dash asked. “I don't know, maybe some sports.” Violet settled herself on the couch opposite of her dad while father and son set next to each other. Bob searched through the channels before stopping at the local sports channel. Dash's face brightened up as the channeled revealed the Washington Redskins V.S. The San Diego Chargers. “Yes, go Chargers!!” Soon Elastigirl came out of the Kitchen with the dinner. Having heard the booes and shouts of delight from the living room she had prepared some hamburgers and hot dogs for the “cook-out”. Settling next to Violet the family ate and cheered at the same time. The game went back and forth after the half-time break. The Chargers would lead for a short time and then the Redskins would jump back into the lead. Bob Parr with Dash were the loudest of all booing when the Reskins got points and cheering loudly when their team the Chargers scored. It was on one of the last drives of the game that it happened. Bob and Dash were on the edge of their seats. The Chargers were at the 10 yard line with 30 Seconds left to play. They had already used up one down and had 2nd and Goal in front of them. They needed to score a touchdown to win the game 21-20. The players were just setting up when suddenly the screen changed... “We interrupt our Redskins V.S. Chargers Game to bring you this superhero dispatch.” “Great they were just about to score.” The voice of Mr. Incredible raised in anger startled the Parr family as they relaxed on a lazy Sunday evening. “Bob don't get angry.” Mrs. Parr (Elastigirl) cut in. “Go ahead Rich” She said returning to the reporter. The TV man continued. “We have an important message towards the Parr family. A robbery has been committed in

sector 127 of the Governmental Secrecy Facility. The suspect is unknown and we have no information except that he took one item, which we haven't identified yet. We request you come at once.” Helen replied for her husband. “Okay we'll come over...Bob?” She turned towards Bob with a questionable look. “Are you coming?” “Yah...I’ll come.”
“Very well...”The Report finished as the football game flashed back across the screen. The Parr family quickly suited up and getting into their sleek red coupe were soon driving through downtown Los Angeles towards Sector 127. The Family was soon next to an ominously large building that could have more easily resembled a prison then a secret base. Next to the main gate was a man waiting for them. "Good you got the message." He said. "Please follow me." Dash and Violet stayed behind as their parents walked inside with the man. Suddenly there was a crash and part of the wall next to the corner fell away! A figure swiftly disappeared into the night. "MOM!!!!!!" Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible appeared where the wall had once been. "Who was that?!?" Mr. Incredible calmed her. "It was Bomb Voyage. He was here stealing some bomb they had." "Did he get it?" "No he couldn't get the crate out of the door. Dash!! Go get him see where he leads you too.” Dash puffed himself up with pride and dashed away into the dark. In a couple of minutes he returned. "He went into a nearby hotel. If we hurry we can nab him." Mr. Incredible and Dash were soon running along the street of downtown Los Angeles towards the hotel. Once they arrived they asked for his room number and hurried upstairs. They burst into his room. “Mr. Incredible!!!” Cried Bomb Voyage. In a flash Dash whirled around him putting hard rope around his arms and waist. Soon Bomb Voyage was tied up and ready to be sent to jail. Have a nice “Voyage” Mr. Incredible said as the police took him away. Voyage struggled and cried out as a last remark. “You can try to stop me but you won’t stop my cousin. He will get the better of you.” And with that the police dragged an upset Bomb Voyage away to jail. Dash was the first to speak as the pair headed home. “He has a cousin??” “Yah all supers do. Some have powers and others have no power because the chance is much slimmer of getting them. You have a cousin….his name is Christopher if I remember correctly. But he disappeared four years ago when your were 8. He would be 13 by now so almost your age. “Have you ever seen him?” “No, I never got to. His mom lives in New Mexico and when he was lost they were all vacationing in Los Angeles. They searched for days but never found him. So they simple took the idea that he was trying to get home on his own.” “But he wasn’t home was he?” “No he wasn’t. They do say that shortly afterwards a new superhero appeared in Los Angeles but we never heard anything else of it. Those reports soon stopped as quickly as they appeared.” www.pixarplanet.com

The A113 Challenge! Ah, A113. Its a number that grabs the attention of Easter Egg-seeking Pixar fans. It appears in all Pixar films. But, here at the Peach Virtual Office, we pose a challenge: how many A113 appearances does it make in all the Pixar films? Well, here’s a little game for you. Pull out all the DVDs, Blu-Rays, and, if you still have them, VCRs, and start counting! You can have fun, while doing something challenging, while rewatching our favourite movies! Don’t even think about checking out the Easter Eggs Thread on the Pixar Planet Forums, because here’s some unique questions to answer: 1. How many times in all the Pixar films does A113 appear in? 2.
