Meet our 2012 AusMumpreneur of the Year Award winners, Toni & Nikki, the two best friends have successfully created an internationally recognised business and a lifestyle that works for them and their families. In an attempt to find the elusive balance between motherhood and owning a business, the pair launched tonic, a venture to source a complete range of gift products for retailers.

“We both had significant careers prior to having our first kids. Recognising successful women in business, the awards received over 200 entrants, and aims to acknowledge entrepreneurial Australian ‘mums’. The panel selected Toni and Nikki from an impressive line-up of finalists, unanimously agreeing that the pairs ability to build a successful business while consistently balancing the demands of their families over the past 20 years was an inspiration for other mums hoping to find the at times elusive work/life balance. The pair work in the business 3 days a week and have always agreed that family must come first. Toni explains “The secret is being able to compartmentalise. When we are at work we are 100% focused on the job, and when we are at home we give our full attention to our families. As our children are growing up, we are really noticing the demands at home are changing – in a good way. We can proudly say that from the very beginning, with the help and support of our husbands and kids, we’ve been able to work efficiently and effectively.”

Someone who inspires you – My Dad. He has always had faith in me and supports me in everything I do. He gives words of wisdom when I ask and trusts my decisions when I don’t! In most cases when you start out in business you don’t know what you need to find out; more simply put… you don’t know what you don’t know!! And it’s this person who can save you a lot of heart ache and get you going in the right direction.

Someone who inspires you – Any Fellow mum who is juggling work while raising a family. I believe there is nothing more difficult than the delicate balancing act a woman performs on a daily basis to make it through her day. Your favourite thing – I am so lucky that my profession is actually my most favourite thing - I just love graphic design. I feel so blessed to have been able to earn a living through something I love so much. A place you love to go on holidays – A beach on a tropical island with the occasional Kids Club session thrown in for good measure. The album you're listening to – A mind-blowing Radiohead playlist on my iPod. What do you love about being a mumpreneur – I love that I’m an active role model for my three girls, showing them that a woman can work and raise a family – that and the flexibility to pop into school and help with reading at any time is the cherry on the cake of my working life. What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards – I was bowled over by the line-up of nominees across all categories and listening to their stories as they spoke on stage was a real eye-opener. A genuinely warm and open environment, I was moved by how candid and open the majority of these women were. We’ve already taken on some of the advice and put it into action within our own business. What's your favourite movie & why – I love a movie with a strong female lead, particularly actresses like Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Toni Collette. What's your favourite book & why- I love Lynley Dodd’s childrens books - such as Slinkly Malinky and Hairy Maclary. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – It will be harder than you expect, you will be tireder than you think but you won’t believe how rewarding it will be. Call upon help and advice from like-minded mums and be amazed at how supportive this growing community is.

Your favourite thing – My laptop. I’d get twitching being away from it for more than 24hours. A place you love to go on holidays – Coral Bay is a magical place we take the family to every Easter. We camp, slow down from the hectic pace of life, snorkel every day, feed fish, read books, catch up on sleep and enjoy each others company. The album you're listening to at the moment - One Direction. My three kids are wild about them. If it were my choice I’d be listening to a bit of jazz. What do you love most about being a mumpreneur - I am really enjoying the great people I meet each day. Mums are nurturers by nature and they extend this to other mum’s in business. Having previously worked in a corporate, predominantly male industry it was a lovely surprise. What’s your favourite book & why- I have just finished reading The Night Circus. What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards - It provided an opportunity for our customers to share their feedback and throw their support behind us. It also allowed us to gain some great publicity from Today Tonight, Fairfax Media Online and local papers which further grew our business. What's your favourite movie & why - Pretty much anything set in New York City. I love the energy, the people and the ‘anything goes’ attitude. I enjoy the underlying feeling of opportunity and people chasing their dreams amongst all the chaos. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – Reach out to other mums in business. It’s a very supportive environment and there are plenty of mumpreneurs willing to assist you. So be brave - get out and network and ask plenty of questions- the AusMumpreneur network and conference has been wonderful in facilitating this for me and is well worth considering.

My mum modelled this for me and she is my inspiration. I hope I am doing the same with my boys, allowing them to experience life, failures and successes. What’s your favourite movie & why – My favourite kids movie would have to be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Your favourite thing – A Sleep in! It is a rarity for me, but is guaranteed at least once a year on Mother’s Day! A place you love to go on holidays – We have been going to Moama, Echuca every Christmas and the tradition has created our family’s memories of fun, laughter and great times. The album you're listening to at the moment – My hubby has set me up a play list of uplifting, inspiring, motivational songs which I always play on the iPod. What do you love most about being a mumpreneur – I love the flexibility. With four boys, life is very hectic and everyday is different, but my #1 priority (my family) can come first – always. What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards – Firstly, I was honoured to be alongside the most amazing collection of talented, successful and inspiring winners, but also, to know that although my business doesn’t quite ‘fit the box’, my vision, goals and business ethos, is making a difference to many. What's your favourite book & why- My favourite book at the moment is a children’s book called “I love Lemonade” written and illustrated by a talented NZ couple Mark and Rowan Sommerset. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – Write down your dreams, no matter how farfetched they may seem – this is a great way to tell the universe where you want to be. Set small, realistic goals and celebrate each success. Allow yourself time to learn, develop and grow. Celebrate each success – always.

Pregnancy is a tough time on any woman. Your body changes and therefore it is important to adjust or alter your exercise routine in order to support and assist your body, as well as your mindset throughout the journey of pregnancy. Throughout pregnancy, you gain weight. The weight distribution also changes – you gain more on your tummy and breasts, as well as your hips, which means that your body will be under strain from supporting that new weight. Your back will need extra support, due to the increased weight of your breasts and tummy, as will your core muscles, due to the weight of your baby.

Become stronger and fitter will also help post pregnancy in the small movements associated with being a new mum, such as carrying your baby around or leaning over often.
If you are unable to exercise or if you don’t have the time to exercise on a certain day, make sure that you still take a little bit of time for yourself – whether that is in the bath, meditating, or even just sitting still and reading for 15 minutes. Taking time for yourself will help to refresh you, making you a happier mum. Understanding how to keep calm and controlled, especially when under pressure will enable you to become a less stressed mum in the long run. Yoga and Pilates are both excellent exercises for inner and outer strength, so trying both could in the long term help you to be a good mum. Reading Eggs (Eggy Words 100 and Eggy Words 250) HD for iPad and Spelling Grades 1-6 by Blake eLearning http://readingeggs.com.au/apps/eggywords Both these apps are available for iOS and Android and have several options both free and paid versions. If you already have the reading eggs subscription (online), this is a great extension of that online software. Eggy words focuses on sight words and there are several ways this is achieved in the game. They have also released Spelling Grades for Years 1-6 to focus on the older children.
Talking Books (or Interactive eBooks) http://www.kiwamedia.com/ I used to love having the cassette and storybooks at home when I was growing up and now many of those stories have been transferred into interactive eBooks. This “Hairy McClary” book comes with the ability to listen to the story, or read the story manually. Key words are also highlighted as the story is being read. It has also the ability for colouring-in the pictures on each page. Their QBooks have been developed in several different languages and are available for both Android and iOS devices. You can change the colours and also record your own voice for the app. A great application of this app is for children to practice drawing their letters and record their voice to assist them in remembering their letters or words.

You choose a character to start with and set up your own name/picture (handy for multiple kids in household) and then choose what state and type of lesson to practice i.e. upper case, lower case and numbers. This app won’t let you move on until you get it right and goes over it multiple times. Highly recommended!
Toca Boca (any of their apps): http://tocaboca.com/ This is currently only available for iOS (but they are looking to release Android versions). Any of the “Toca Boca” apps are fantastic for kids of all ages (especially Under 10)and have an education focus with different elements (even I love playing them if I can get my iPad!) I love Toca Boca House (there are different tasks around the house such as sorting mail, ironing, washing, sweeping floors and giving the characters gifts when it’s mail time. It was great to talk to my Miss 4 after her playing this game about the sorts of things that she could help out with around the home. What was your inspiration?
I love coming up with ways to make people in my life or the community feel special and appreciated and Ways to Amaze was a natural extension of this. I was also fed up and disheartened watching all the sad and tragic stories that dominate the news and it was my aim to be able to feature positive news stories and shine a light on all the wonderful things that people do for each other. I really wanted a place that would help inspire people with real life ideas when they ask themselves the question “what special thing can I do for my husband / kids / neighbours today”?

Cloth solution, a bottom line advantage As any expectant mum, Michelle Fowler wanted to provide the best for her new baby. After researching all the options available to clothe her baby’s bottom, she decided that Modern Cloth Nappies were ideal. The birth of Shell’s first son in 2005 provided the inspiration for the very first Cushie Tushies nappy. “I wanted the benefits of cloth with the ease of disposables – I was looking for an allin-one that was absorbent, easy to use, in fun, brightly coloured fabrics. At the time, there weren’t too many options within my limited budget that covered all the bases, so I created my own!” It was such a fun and effective product that word spread. Pretty soon, Shell was making nappies for friends and strangers alike and, with the help of our customers’ feedback, the Cushie Tushie developed into the popular nappy that it is today. One friend who got into these early Cushie Tushies was myself. Now business partner, my background is in corporate advertising. But the ethical dilemma of designing packaging for a tobacco company and the boredom of creating advertising for a bank drove me to seek a more professionally satisfying and family-friendly role. So, after having used Shell’s nappies for two years, I jumped at the opportunity to join her in business. By 2008 Michelle was sewing 100 nappies a week and we needed to find a factory to take over, stat! After a six-month search with the help of an agent we found a small factory in Shanghai to produce our first 1000-piece order. Then there was the challenge of securing money to fund our expansion. We had all this demand from customers but needed to sort out the finance to keep production going! Banks had originally been supportive, but at the point of finalising the paperwork, the GFC hit and all of a sudden the bankers thought, ‘a modern cloth nappy? What is that?’ Trying to convince them this was the Next Big Thing and not such a risky investment took a rather stressful six months.

when legal contracts come to an end what happens next? by larissa glubb When a contract comes to an end, whether by one party terminating the contract or the contract simply expires, the key or “primary” rights or obligations of the parties, as set out in the contract, usually come to an end at the same time. However, the end of a contract does not mean you can simply shake hands and walk away. Often the contract will contain specific obligations or consequences that “survive” termination or expiry. In well-drafted contracts you will usually find these consequences set out after the termination clause or in a separate survival provision. Sometimes, the consequences are dotted throughout the contract, so you will need to re-read it carefully to make sure that you continue to do (or stop doing) certain things once the agreement terminates or expires.
What Rights or Obligations last after Termination or Expiry? The answer to this will depend on your contract, but some more common ones include:

Often a contract is terminated because the client or customer has failed to pay for the services or products received. If this is the case, then these fees remain due and payable even though the contract has ended.

Usually you will be obliged to continue to keep the other party’s confidential information secure. You must not use or disclose it to any other person. The other party will usually be obliged to keep your confidential information secure as well.
