2012 AusMumpreneur of the year winners

Nikki Horovitz & Toni Joel of tonic

Meet our 2012 AusMumpreneur of the Year Award winners, Toni & Nikki, the two best friends have successfully created an internationally recognised business and a lifestyle that works for them and their families. In an attempt to find the elusive balance between motherhood and owning a business, the pair launched tonic, a venture to source a complete range of gift products for retailers.

entrepreneurship, the pair attributes their longevity and success to their determination to be true to their initial vision for tonic: to provide a range of luxurious, unique and quality Australian-made products.

“We both had significant careers prior to having our first kids. We wanted to be great mothers but quickly realised that as people we needed more, and we both missed the intellectual and creative stimulus of business. We also saw a real opening in the market for good-looking, high quality gift items, beautifully packaged at an affordable price. Then tonic was born.” Nikki explains.

“We believe having a core idea supported by strong values to drive your business are essential to success. We have never waivered from the things we value – honesty, value, family and integrity. Plus, the ability to laugh when things get tough never goes astray!” Nikki explains.

Toni and Nikki recently celebrated 20 years in business. With common values of family, creativity and

Nikki adds, “That’s been key for us – ensuring balance. This was one of the main reasons we wanted to own our

Toni adds, “tonic has evolved into a business that we are even prouder of today. Knowing our products are stocked in hundreds of stores around Australia is Over time, and as their business concept expanded, testament to the dedication we’ve shown, but not tonic adapted to the market and evolved into the beautiful home fragrance, bath and body range that it is to the detriment of balancing our work and our lives outside the business.” today.

own business. 20 years on, we are so thrilled to reach this milestone and also proud to still be 100% Australian owned and made.” The pair celebrates the milestone following their latest accomplishment; being named 2012 AusMumpreneurs of the Year at the AusMumpreneur Conference in Sydney last month. Recognising successful women in business, the awards received over 200 entrants, and aims to acknowledge entrepreneurial Australian ‘mums’. The panel selected Toni and Nikki from an impressive line-up of finalists, unanimously agreeing that the pairs ability to build a successful business while consistently balancing the demands of their families over the past 20 years was an inspiration for other mums hoping to find the at times elusive work/life balance. The pair work in the business 3 days a week and have always agreed that family must come first. Toni explains “The secret is being able to compartmentalise. When we are at work we are 100% focused on the job, and when we are at home we give our full attention to our families. As our children are growing up, we are really noticing the demands at home are changing – in a good way. We can proudly say that from the very beginning, with the help and support of our husbands and kids, we’ve been able to work efficiently and effectively.”

“Establish a core belief for your business and don’t let those values change. If you have faith in your business and make it the best that it possibly can be, you’re halfway there. Be sure to choose something you are truly passionate about, and lastly, don’t rest on your laurels.”

The authentic tonic ethos of beauty, simplicity and quality explains how the brand has achieved ongoing success over the past two decades. With a range of items to revive, relax, renew and refresh, tonic offers essentials for the individual and the modern home. From fabric gifts to home fragrances and beautiful body products, tonic encompasses seven superb ranges Merci, Heritage, Gallery, Graphic and Liberty. All tonic products are proudly 100% handmade in Australia, are not tested on animals and are made with the highest quality, locally sourced materials and ingredients.

I think it would be Sara Gazarek What do you love most about being a mumpreneur – I think I like juggling...now that I’ve actually embraced this I’m having so much more fun. I get to go and do school pick ups and still do the work I love. Now that’s cool.

What's your favourite movie & why – Singing in the Rain – it’s a classic, that’s they way life should be What's your favourite book & why- Happiness for no good reason – it’s a book that teaches mediation with the most amazing teacher. This book really changed my life. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – go for it and don’t look back. It can be overwhelming when you start but you don’t need to achieve everything today, just do it in bite size chunks and have fun

Kristen Semmens

Nitpro & Ziggetty Snipits

www.ziggettysnipits.com.au

Someone who inspires you – My Dad. He has always had faith in me and supports me in everything I do. He gives words of wisdom when I ask and trusts my decisions when I don’t! He leads without bossing and loves unconditionally everyone he meets. I want to be a parent like him A place you love to go on holidays – If I actually ever went on holidays then I would probably have a favourite place! But if I could pick my dream holiday it would be a flight to London, a train ride to Paris and after I’ve had my fill of French cafes I would love to glide along the waters in Venice… *sigh. Your favourite thing – If you determine your favourite thing by how much time you spend with it then it would have to be my children, although some days I think my computer comes a pretty close second! What’s your favourite book - Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier The album you're listening to at the moment – Michael Buble What do you love most about being a mumpreneur – Leading by example for my children mixed with the flexibility and freedom of being my own boss. What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards – The shock that someone else sees the same value in my company as I do! That was reward enough! What's your favourite movie & why –BBC Pride & Prejudice: I just love the moment when Darcy smiles slightly at Lizzy and she stands by the piano and smiles back. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – Find someone, connect with someone, ask everyone, even pay someone, with the business knowledge in the areas that you don’t have. In most cases when you start out in business you don’t know what you need to find out; more simply put… you don’t know what you don’t know!! And it’s this person who can save you a lot of heart ache and get you going in the right direction.

A place you love to go on holidays – After moving to QLD, I often feel like I’m living a holiday so now I enjoy going back to where I grew up in Albury, NSW and enjoying the slower pace and tranquility of the country. The album you're listening to at the moment – We’re all enjoying a bit of Lah Lah’s Shake it like this album at the moment. No grown up music in our house unless it’s Playschool! What do you love most about being a mumpreneur – Being able to work from home is all I hoped it would be, from being able to drop into the kindy for special occasions, to having access to fresh herbs in the garden for lunch and having business meetings from my kitchen table What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards – - The reaction from my family, friends, team and advertisers. I believe there is nothing more difficult than the delicate balancing act a woman performs on a daily basis to make it through her day. Your favourite thing – I am so lucky that my profession is actually my most favourite thing - I just love graphic design. I feel so blessed to have been able to earn a living through something I love so much. The album you're listening to – A mind-blowing Radiohead playlist on my iPod. What do you love about being a mumpreneur – I love that I’m an active role model for my three girls, showing them that a woman can work and raise a family – that and the flexibility to pop into school and help with reading at any time is the cherry on the cake of my working life. What was the most exciting thing about winning the awards – I was bowled over by the line-up of nominees across all categories and listening to their stories as they spoke on stage was a real eye-opener. A genuinely warm and open environment, I was moved by how candid and open the majority of these women were. We’ve already taken on some of the advice and put it into action within our own business. What's your favourite movie & why – I love a movie with a strong female lead, particularly actresses like Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Toni Collette. What's your favourite book & why- I love Lynley Dodd’s childrens books - such as Slinkly Malinky and Hairy Maclary. What's the one piece of advice you would give to other mums starting out in business – It will be harder than you expect, you will be tireder than you think but you won’t believe how rewarding it will be. Call upon help and advice from like-minded mums and be amazed at how supportive this growing community is.

Exercises such as Pilates and yoga aim to improve both your mind and body. One of the main benefits of Pilates is awareness of your body – through the movements you’ll learn how to use your body and how it feels to use your body. Pilates also helps to improve your core muscles, and it also helps to stabilise and balance your muscles. You can also see more specific advice on core exercises here. Awareness of your body is an excellent benefit during pregnancy, as it will help you to be in tune with the small signals your body gives about you and your baby. Becoming more in tune with your body is just a great way to improve your overall wellbeing. Become stronger and fitter will also help post pregnancy in the small movements associated with being a new mum, such as carrying your baby around or leaning over often.

If you are unable to exercise or if you don’t have the time to exercise on a certain day, make sure that you still take a little bit of time for yourself – whether that is in the bath, meditating, or even just sitting still and reading for 15 minutes. Taking time for yourself will help to refresh you, making you a happier mum. Understanding how to keep calm and controlled, especially when under pressure will enable you to become a less stressed mum in the long run. Yoga and Pilates are both excellent exercises for inner and outer strength, so trying both could in the long term help you to be a good mum. If you’re a little down on motivation, try walking with a friend – you’ll be much less likely to make an excuse if you have someone else to answer to. To improve the intensity of the walk, try adding wrist or ankle weights.

Remember that following the birth of your baby, your main priority should be to enjoy that time with your child. It’s not a time you’ll ever get back, so take a step back and savour it, rather than spend all day out running to shed the weight.

If you’re new to exercise, just add in exercise where you can. Fit in ten minutes here and there, perhaps three times a week, then increase it to five times a week, and then when you feel comfortable, add extra minutes into your exercise routine. mobile apps your kids will

LOVE

Sometimes, your children take over your mobile devices and seem to think that they OWN them, rather than being a tool for your business! These apps are for those times when you need to take a business call, answer emails or just need to have some “me” time for your business. There are some great app developer’s out there who are parents themselves and have developed apps in mind for children.

Reading Eggs (Eggy Words 100 and Eggy Words 250) HD for iPad and Spelling Grades 1-6 by Blake eLearning http://readingeggs.com.au/apps/eggywords Both these apps are available for iOS and Android and have several options both free and paid versions. If you already have the reading eggs subscription (online), this is a great extension of that online software. Eggy words focuses on sight words and there are several ways this is achieved in the game. They have also released Spelling Grades for Years 1-6 to focus on the older children.

Talking Books (or Interactive eBooks) http://www.kiwamedia.com/ I used to love having the cassette and storybooks at home when I was growing up and now many of those stories have been transferred into interactive eBooks. This “Hairy McClary” book comes with the ability to listen to the story, or read the story manually. Key words are also highlighted as the story is being read. It has also the ability for colouring-in the pictures on each page. Their QBooks have been developed in several different languages and are available for both Android and iOS devices. Singing Fingers: http://singingfingers.com/ Both Android and iOS Devices When you draw with this app it creates a musical sound as you are creating your picture. You can change the colours and also record your own voice for the app. A great application of this app is for children to practice drawing their letters and record their voice to assist them in remembering their letters or words.

iGuy kid proof case for ALL iPads $45 www.poweredlife.com.au

RED Handwriting (handwriting for all states) http://red.roguemobile.com.au/ This app unfortunately is only available for iOS devices. This app allows children to practice their handwriting in both letters and numbers and select the appropriate ‘Australian State’ for each of the different styles. It is currently the only app on the market that does this and includes Australian phonetic phrasing so that children can practice along. You choose a character to start with and set up your own name/picture (handy for multiple kids in household) and then choose what state and type of lesson to practice i.e. upper case, lower case and numbers. This app won’t let you move on until you get it right and goes over it multiple times. Highly recommended!

Toca Boca (any of their apps): http://tocaboca.com/ This is currently only available for iOS (but they are looking to release Android versions). Any of the “Toca Boca” apps are fantastic for kids of all ages (especially Under 10)and have an education focus with different elements (even I love playing them if I can get my iPad!) I love Toca Boca House (there are different tasks around the house such as sorting mail, ironing, washing, sweeping floors and giving the characters gifts when it’s mail time. It was great to talk to my Miss 4 after her playing this game about the sorts of things that she could help out with around the home. Moving your family Interstate or internationally

When you arrive in a new city there are so many decisions to make. Your thought process and learning curve feel as if they are on steroids. It does not take long before you have the feeling of being like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Top three tips for Mums: Finding your mojo, again • Allocate one corner in the house, out of the way As mothers we need to keep a level of balance, harmony and put a big sign on it, “NOT TO MOVE.” Suitcases and routine in our families lives. We as parents anticipate the hardship they might encounter – kids don’t think that far into the future. For the children, its here and now, today, this is what is important to me. So I encourage parents, prepare your children for things that might happen within a few days, don’t over whelm them with your concerns for their first day of school – when that is still two months away. And, you know what, a little soft serve ice cream brings back the smile in no time – even for teenagers. Most people get so excited about the home they can forget to check for obvious signs of mould, or how many electric sockets there are. Of course a 15-minute inspection is not a lot of time, and whilst the home must have the right “feel” about it, you also need to choose using your head, so consider making yourself a list of things to check.

Founder of Personnel Relocations, Robyn Vogels, knows what it takes to move internationally, having spent 15 years of her life, moving and living around the world. Robyn’s understanding of cultures, language barriers; of moving processes, and urgency to make important decisions, has all mixed together with her love of helping others. There are few relocation companies that can relate to an international move the way Personnel Relocations can. The founder, Robyn Vogels has lived and worked in nine cities around the world, moved with children to three different continents, and now, settled in Melbourne, she shares her knowledge and experience with new arrivals. Being able to relate to a relocation is so important. Robyn has a deeper understanding of the families’ emotions and can anticipate their needs. Never overwhelming them with irrelevant information – but information when they need it. Melbourne has a rental shortage; this is particularly noticeable in the surrounding suburbs that feed workers into the city. With relocation support, the family can have a local confident to help with the process of narrowing down where to live, which school to send their children too and, how the transport works, just about anything to help them get settled, and make a positive start to their new life. Personnel Relocations provides both corporate and private relocation support. Offering a comprehensive accompanied support or an unaccompanied virtual support. Ways to Amaze Rebecca Richardson recently launched Ways to Amaze a website which encourages people to share their real life stories of kindness, with at least $1 going to a different charity each month, for every story contributed.

What was your inspiration?

I love coming up with ways to make people in my life or the community feel special and appreciated and Ways to Amaze was a natural extension of this. I was also fed up and disheartened watching all the sad and tragic stories that dominate the news and it was my aim to be able to feature positive news stories and shine a light on all the wonderful things that people do for each other. I really wanted a place that would help inspire people with real life ideas when they ask themselves the question “what special thing can I do for my husband / kids / neighbours today”?

for others, and even the simple act of counting kindnesses which we rarely have time to do, shows a significant impact on people’s lives and how it makes them happier. It’s basically a win for everyone, the giver and receiver. As the Dalai Lama, once said “When we feel love and kindness towards others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also develop inner happiness and peace.”

What’s next?

I have been privileged to help support and raise awareness for four charities so far, Mum’s Like Me, Heartkids NSW, Matt Golinski’s Recovery Fund In addition, lot’s of studies show how important it Trust, Redkite, and this month I’m thrilled to is for our well being and life fulfillment to do things be supporting Movember, a global charity which raises vital awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. I have recently added a new feature to the site, whereby contributors now have the option of sending a thank you eCard to show their appreciation for what that special person has done for them and I plan to add more useful features in the future. One of the joys of launching Ways to Amaze is the people I have been in touch with who have similar values to me. I have recently signed up to be an interstate volunteer for a fabulous website called Givit (a targeted giving service which connects charities with quality items from the community) and an ambassador for World Kindness Australia so who knows what exciting journey lies ahead. On a personal level, I hope to inspire and teach my children that there is more to life than money and profit and you will be happy and successful by finding a meaningful purpose and by being kind to others. www.waystoamaze.com.au www.facebook.com/waystoamaze www.twitter.com/waystoamaze

Cloth solution, a bottom line advantage As any expectant mum, Michelle Fowler wanted to provide the best for her new baby. After researching all the options available to clothe her baby’s bottom, she decided that Modern Cloth Nappies were ideal. The birth of Shell’s first son in 2005 provided the inspiration for the very first Cushie Tushies nappy. “I wanted the benefits of cloth with the ease of disposables – I was looking for an allin-one that was absorbent, easy to use, in fun, brightly coloured fabrics. At the time, there weren’t too many options within my limited budget that covered all the bases, so I created my own!” It was such a fun and effective product that word spread. Pretty soon, Shell was making nappies for friends and strangers alike and, with the help of our customers’ feedback, the Cushie Tushie developed into the popular nappy that it is today. One friend who got into these early Cushie Tushies was myself. Now business partner, my background is in corporate advertising. But the ethical dilemma of designing packaging for a tobacco company and the boredom of creating advertising for a bank drove me to seek a more professionally satisfying and family-friendly role. So, after having used Shell’s nappies for two years, I jumped at the opportunity to join her in business. By 2008 Michelle was sewing 100 nappies a week and we needed to find a factory to take over, stat! After a six-month search with the help of an agent we found a small factory in Shanghai to produce our first 1000-piece order. Then there was the challenge of securing money to fund our expansion. We had all this demand from customers but needed to sort out the finance to keep production going! Banks had originally been supportive, but at the point of finalising the paperwork, the GFC hit and all of a sudden the bankers thought, ‘a modern cloth nappy? What is that?’ Trying to convince them this was the Next Big Thing and not such a risky investment took a rather stressful six months.

Michelle’s business partner & best friend Cath Langman of Cushie Tushies

The last four years have flown by rather quickly. Our product range has grown, our sales have grown, and our team has grown to include five employees in addition to Michelle and myself, as well as 15 sales contractors around Australia. We are now stocked in over 90 retailers nationally and are starting to export internationally as well. Michelle’s nappy-sewing days seem a distant memory now and, whilst we have bigger dreams still to achieve, we have already grown into a much bigger company than we anticipated when we started! www.cushietushies.com.au

Entrepreneurs of all stripes often like to start several projects over time. That’s what the entrepreneurial spirit is all about! This can quickly become overwhelming as time goes on and projects pile on. Recently, we’ve seen a growing number of mumpreneurs, both in Australia and overseas, elect to sell off their previous online businesses and projects. While the idea of buying and selling websites can seem unusual, it’s quickly catching on with entrepreneurs worldwide. Just on Flippa.com, the #1 marketplace for buying and selling websites, websites sales have reached over $88 million in three years.

Chances are, if you’ve been building your site’s content for months (or even years!), this unique content, the people reading and the links pointing to it, hold a lot of value for website buyers.

Web sites don’t have to generate revenue to be successfully sold. Take, for example, TheMomCrowd. com, a blog that sold for $2,500 last year. The key to this sale? Quality content and lots of incoming links, which both hold value for website investors.

when legal contracts come to an end what happens next? by larissa glubb When a contract comes to an end, whether by one party terminating the contract or the contract simply expires, the key or “primary” rights or obligations of the parties, as set out in the contract, usually come to an end at the same time. However, the end of a contract does not mean you can simply shake hands and walk away. Often the contract will contain specific obligations or consequences that “survive” termination or expiry. In well-drafted contracts you will usually find these consequences set out after the termination clause or in a separate survival provision. Sometimes, the consequences are dotted throughout the contract, so you will need to re-read it carefully to make sure that you continue to do (or stop doing) certain things once the agreement terminates or expires.

What Rights or Obligations last after Termination or Expiry? The answer to this will depend on your contract, but some more common ones include:

All Unpaid Fees become Due and Payable

Often a contract is terminated because the client or customer has failed to pay for the services or products received. If this is the case, then these fees remain due and payable even though the contract has ended.

Confidentiality

Usually you will be obliged to continue to keep the other party’s confidential information secure. You must not use or disclose it to any other person. The other party will usually be obliged to keep your confidential information secure as well.

Return of Data & Information

time. If you are the party giving the representations or warranties, you’ll need to carefully consider the level of insurance you need and make sure it remains in place for a reasonable period of time after termination or expiry.

Limitation of Liability & Indemnities

Often the parties will confirm that the limitation of liability clause and any indemnity given by one party to the other will survive termination. This is because one party may not bring a claim against the other party until after the agreement has ended, so the limit on a party’s liability or the right to be indemnified against certain losses or damages still remain after termination.

Non-Compete

Sometimes contracts will state that one party must not set up a similar enterprise or business in a particular geographical area or targeting similar customers for a period of time after termination or expiry. Better than chocolate Sheila Roberts Sweet Dreams Chocolate Company has been in the Sterling family for generations, ever since Great-Grandma Rose literally dreamed up her first fabulous recipe. But now it looks as if they’re about to lose Sweet Dreams to the bank—and that would be a disaster, not only for the family but for the town of Icicle Falls, Washington. Can Samantha, the oldest daughter and new head of the company, come up with a way to save it? After Samantha does some brainstorming with her mother and sisters, inspiration strikes. They’ll have a chocolate festival! Time’s running out, but the Sterling women are determined and the town’s behind them, so everything’s bound to go smoothly…. Or not. Events seem to be conspiring against Samantha, and her mother’s attempts to help aren’t helping. To make matters worse, the fate of her company is in the hands of her archenemy, Blake Preston, the bank manager with the football-hero good looks. It’s enough to drive her to chocolate. But Blake’s also enough to convince her that (believe it or not) there’s something even better than chocolate. Wired for Life Susan Pearse & Martina Sheehan Why do some people thrive while others merely survive? It seems that the answer lies not in the circumstances that we each experience, but in the brain that we each carry. It may have evolved over millions of years, but your brain still uses the same basic survival mechanisms to guarantee your survival as it did when your earliest ancestors walked the planet. In this modern world, these default threat responses designed to protect you are more likely to sabotage you and hold you back from experiencing all that life has to offer. Wired for Life will explain why you think, decide and act the way you do. It explores the 5 fears commonly triggered by your brain’s threat response – fear of failure, fear of losing control, fear of standing out, fear of missing out, and fear of facing the truth – and how they creep undetected into so many parts of your life, impacting on your ability to experience happiness, freedom, success and fulfillment.

Because I love you Barbara Toner What daughter doesn’t need advice? What mother can’t give it? Whether she’s 18 or 81 a daughter can always benefit from a second opinion on the condition of her soul, her heart, her head, her hair, her cleavage. Also her loves, her hates, her dreams, her debts, her teeth and sexting. No second opinion will be more valuable than her mother’s because it will be offered with love tempered by wisdom and in the certain knowledge that, without it this daughter will end her days on the streets, in the gutter, with spoilt children, gum disease and bosom droop. Barbara Toner acknowledges the universal truth that advice should only ever be offered if sought. She’s chosen to ignore it, as any self-respecting mother should, in this heartfelt address to her own three daughters. The result is an indispensable guide to be shared by mothers and daughters of all ages everywhere.
