ern Suburbs Taxi Association signed the same agreement. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport Councillor Marlon Daniels said ongoing discussions were taking place to bring Algoa Bus Company

(ABC) on board and to thrash out operational issues and the final composition of the operating company. Daniels thanked his predecessor Rano Kayser for his role in attaining this milestone.

Date set for 15th annual IRONMAN REPORTER THE hugely popular Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship 2019 is set to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay again on Sunday, April 7, next year. The Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship started in 2005 and quickly caught the eye of many. It now boasts over 2 000 athletes who register for the event year on year. It is regarded as one of the most popular triathlon events with over a third of the entrants being international competitors. The warm climate, fantastic local spectator support and ideal

“This is a milestone and I only had to walk the last few yards to reach this point. It is, therefore, important to acknowledge the hard work of the former MMC and the officials. I am ecstatic to have reached this point as we all worked very hard to attain a unified voice among the crucial role players. “We made a conscious decision to halt the buses during the national

bus strike for safety reasons and trust that the ongoing wage negotiations will reach a resolution soon, Daniels said. Algoa Taxi Association, Northern Areas Taxi Association, Norwich Taxi Association and East Cape Taxi Association signed memoranda of understanding with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in 2016 which means that all 10 taxi associations operating in Nelson Mandela Bay are part of operations.

This was the first time a South African has taken the top step of the podium since Raynard Tissink won in 2011. ‘Front door kickers’ target poorly secured Bay homes NWABISA FUNDE FRONT door kickers are back in town. There has been a reported surge in a trend where criminals are targeting Nelson Mandela Bay homes with weak gates and front doors. Atlas Security operations manager Monty Montgomery said that recent instances where front doors and gates were kicked in were on the increase. According to Je Taime Edgar, public relations officer of Atlas, these front door burglaries were not area-bound. “The criminals are constantly moving around. “They jump from one policed area to another with more than one burglary per area per day. Monty (Montgomery) finds that there are normally between four to eight a day. “They would strike in Uitenhage and Despatch first before entering Port Elizabeth. Or vice versa. This all happens very quickly and we are amazed at how quickly plasma TVs disappear, Edgar said. Montgomery advised members of the community to try to prevent criminals from entering their homes by means of security meas-

ures, such as sturdier gates or bolstering their front door with extra locks. These will decrease the likelihood of the home being a target. “This will create less leverage for the criminals to be able to kick down the door, said Montgomery. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg could not confirm that there has been an increase in such crimes.

Alarming rise in vulture electrocutions on power lines REPORTER VULPRO, an NGO that works to safeguard Africa’s vulture populations through rescue and rehabilitation, has warned that unless urgent action is taken, South Africa’s electrical grid could be driving the endemic Cape vulture towards extinction.

VulPro recorded 23 vultures of mainly the endemic Cape Vulture having been either killed or permanently damaged on power lines in the country during the month of April, primarily in the North West and Eastern Cape Provinces.

Cape vultures are globally endangered with fewer than 4 200 breeding pairs left.

This comes after VulPro recorded a total of 23 vultures (mainly Cape vultures) having been either killed or permanently damaged on power lines in the country during the month of April. Most incidents were recorded in the North West and Eastern Cape provinces. A VulPro power line survey previously pointed to a mortality rate of around three vultures per month. Kerri Wolter, founder and manager of VulPro, said, “The tragedy of this latest unacceptably high tally is that it is possible to proof power lines to prevent these mortalities from happening. For our team, the death by electrocution of the oldest of our captive-bred chicks, which was released last year on November 8 to help supplement the wild bird population, hit us particularly hard. “The unsafe electricity grid should be seen as a priority for the survival, in particular, of the endemic Cape vulture. “We have a responsibility internationally to safeguard this iconic species.” Cape vultures are classified as globally endangered with fewer than 4 200 breeding pairs left, putting them on par with the endangered black rhino which has a population of around 5 000 animals. They are slow-breeding birds, reaching maturity between five and seven years of age and laying one egg a year. As the only endemic vulture species to southern Africa, they have already become extinct as a breeding species in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. While surviving vultures form part of a captive-breeding programme, the costs of sustaining them are high and the chicks that are released into the wild run the risk of further power line collisions and electrocutions. Vultures travel vast distances in search of food, water sources and breeding sites. They often use power line structures to roost

on as these offer a safe, elevated, vantage point from where they can easily lift off and climb thermals. More often than not, power-line-related injuries maim birds for life, with no chance of being re-released back into the wild. Collisions usually result in broken wings and legs which may need amputation and/or pinning, while electrocutions nearly always result in fatality. During the past three-year period, a total of 56 vulture fatalities were recorded during VulPro’s power line surveys. Between January and December last year, another 40 vulture fatalities were recorded. This indicates an average loss of three vultures per month due to power line incidents. In addition, since 2015, 422 vultures have been found by members of the public, land owners and farmers, dead or injured due to power lines. These are only the cases which have been reported to VulPro. The figure in reality will far surpass this.

SPECIAL REPORT: SIX BLACK RHINOS FIND NEW HOME

Rhinos translocated from Addo to Chad Last Thursday six black rhinos were translocated from the Addo Elephant National Park to Chad in central Africa. The operation was highly confidential and only a few media representatives were invited to witness the event. The PE Express’ JORDAN JOHNSON filed this story and TANYA VAN ZYL captured the action on camera.

T

HERE was a mix of emotions among staff of the Addo Elephant National Park when six black rhinos were translocated from this park to their new home at the Zakouma National Park in Chad, Central Africa on Thursday. The translocation took place after a memorandum of understanding was signed in October last year between South Africa’s Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, and the then Minister of Environment and Fisheries of the Republic of Chad, Dr Ahmat Mbodou Mahamat, which allowed for the translocation of black rhino from South Africa to Chad as part of an initiative to reintroduce rhino to this area. “By establishing a viable and secure rhino population in Chad, we are contributing to the expansion of the rhino population in Africa, and the survival of a species that has faced high levels of poaching for the past decade,” said Molewa. The translocation of black rhino is being achieved through a collaboration between the Department of Environmental Affairs, the government of Chad, SANParks and the African Parks Foundation. The rhinos are translocated to the Zakouma National Park, which has experienced a dramatic decrease in poaching since 2010, with the local elephant population increasing for the first time in more than a decade. The last black rhino in Chad was noted in the ’70s in Zakouma. The rhinos will be protected and managed by African Parks. During the translocation, each rhino was placed in a separate boma at Addo Elephant National Park. One by one they were darted by the SANParks veterinarian, Dr David Zimmerman (Veterinary Wildlife Services). They were then lured with food into their crates,

where the final checks were done before they were transported to the Port Elizabeth International Airport for their 15-hour journey to Chad on a charter plane. Molewa was also present when the first four rhinos were loaded at Addo on Thursday. “We are very sad to see the rhinos go, but we are happy for our brothers and sisters who will receive the rhinos,” said Molewa. She also spoke about this being a

step forward in conservation. “We have seen an established downward trend in poaching. We are working with organisations around the world to stop poaching and the purchasing of illegal products, such as ivory.” The first two rhinos, who were loaded into the crates, were Princess (four to five years old) and Harry (five to six years old), who had both been captured at the Marakele National Park in Limpopo in January before being brought to the Addo bomas. At their arrival in Chad, Princess’s name was changed to Farahatna, meaning “the one that brings happiness” and Harry’s name to Hilmal Watane meaning “the happiness of the nation”. The rhinos arrived safely in Chad on Friday with no challenges, according to Peter Mbelengwa, spokesperson of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). “They will be kept in the boma for the next two weeks for welfare and monitoring. They will then be tagged with tracking devices and dehorned before they are released,” Mbelengwa said.

Green energy project paves the way for more REPORTER A FIRST of its kind green energy initiative in the Port of PE has proven successful. The pilot project has opened the door for larger projects in the future, which is in line with the technological advancement of the Transnet Strategy 4.0 and the Smart People’s Port concept.

Some of the members of the TNPA installation team are, from left, Haroun Shaik, Mandilake Rala, Lyndon Brink, Zandisile Witbooi, Nomonde Mntwapi, Mzukisi Keli, Asanda Gwija and Mbulelo Kosani. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

“This sustainable and environmentally friendly project will also save costs significantly. The return on investment is an absolute bonus,” said Rajesh Dana, port manager. “It is introducing sustainable means of operations into the folds of the port. Capable of generating

1 800kWh per month, it is the equivalent of the amount of energy consumed by six small households. “Based at the Civil Engineering Depot and connected to its distribution board, it is supplying the depot with energy primarily consumed by light equipment, appliances and lighting.” According to Dana, there will be definite financial returns. Although the energy generated is consumed internally, it will reduce external electricity cost to the municipality. The return on investment period is about seven years – it will thus take seven years for the savings to cover the initial infrastructure investment of R240 000. After this, they will gen-

erate pure savings. The project entailed the installation of a 13.5kWp grid tied static solar photovoltaic system. It comprises 42 280W PV panels and a 20kWp three-phase inverter. The project was completed within four months at the end of last year. After three months of operation, the installation has exceeded the benchmarks set and paved the way for larger installations. “We’ll soon be going out to market for a much larger installation, exceeding 500kWp of renewable energy generation,” Dana concluded. The port engineers department and renewable energy service provider, Out the Green Box, were responsible for the implementation.

Youth centre hosts environmental awareness march The youth of the Maranatha Child and Youth Care Centre have been very busy with their Earth Day activities. One of the new projects that they have been busy with is their ‘eco bricks’ initiative where they have been filling bottles with plastic in order to be able to make ‘green’ bricks for building projects at the centre. They also planted a special tree for the occasion and designed their own posters and collages. Pictured here are some of the youth who recently took to the streets and staged a special march along Kings Beach, through to the popular Sunday market to raise awareness of environmental issues. Enter for Bottle Cap Challenge REPORTER TIMBER Solutions, a local green manufacturer specialising in recycled plastic outdoor furniture and applications is encouraging all schools to participate in this year’s Bottle Cap Collection Schools Challenge. The bottle cap project was launched two years ago when local residents were encouraged to collect soft drink and water bottle caps. “It exceeded all our expectations. We were flooded with enthusiastic collectors. Residents stated that they could not go anywhere without picking up bottle caps,” Linda Heymans of Timber Solutions said. She said although the challenge started late last year and only lasted for a period of three months, the interest was as enthusiastic as ever, resulting in a total weight of 2.5 tons of bottle caps being collected. “As part of educating the learners, we also

offered presentations to the schools, so, learners could see how a new product is manufactured from something as small as a mere bottle cap. All products manufactured by Timber Solutions are made of 100% recycled plastic. “No other products are added. The product is a complete green product, extremely durable and needs no maintenance,” Heymans said. She further described that the project was aimed at empowering and instilling a sense of environmental responsibility among the residents, especially the youth. “Recycling is fast becoming more and more important in all aspects of our lives. We have, therefore, introduced this project to the youth as they are eager to share their knowledge with their siblings and parents, reaching households all over the metro. “Collecting something as small as a bottle cap is only but a start to becoming more aware of the impact of recycling. Although we have started the project with just collecting bottle caps, we have introduced a bigger variety of items which we will be collecting this year,” Heymans said. Entries will end in October and prizes will be awarded to the top three schools. Schools that wish to participate can send an email to info@timbersolutionspe.co.za.

Enter now for Mini Maestros competition ENTRIES for the annual South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) Mini Maestro Music Competition are now open. The regional branch of the SASMT will be hosting the music competition at Collegiate Junior School on May 26 from 09:00. It is aimed at music learners between the ages of five and 13 who are in the beginner, initial and Grade 1 phases of musical tuition. Each participant will receive a certificate and a report sheet characterised by clear, constructive feedback. Medals will also be awarded to three

learners within each category. The SASMT committee encouraged all music teachers from the Nelson Mandela Bay, Cacadu District and the Sundays River areas to enter their budding musicians. Last year more than 200 individuals entered the competition. The committee is expecting the number to increase this year as the event has become a highlight on the musical calendar. Admission to the competition is free. For entry forms and more info contact Nicky Bosman on 041 504 4235. – REPORTER

Bay’s best dancers prepare for battle at annual festival REPORTER THE date is set and all dance lovers have been called on to circle August 20 to September 1 on their calendars for the 38th Port Elizabeth Dance Festival (PEDF). The annual festival was founded by Jennifer Abrahams and Hermione Ballinger in 1981 to promote the love of dance. Ballinger’s daughter, Nici Lovemore, who is continuing her mother’s legacy as the chairperson of PEDF, is also passionate about dance and aims to deliver a festival full of entertainment. The dance festival will showcase a variety of dance styles, including ballet, contemporary, tap, hip-hop, Irish and African, and create a platform for dancers of all ages to gain and enjoy stage experience. “My hope is that many Eastern Cape dance studios give their dancers the opportunity to compete and enjoy this fun experience. We aim to encourage all teachers and dancers of a wide variety of dance disciplines to participate,” said Lovemore. This year, she has refreshed and relaunched the festival with a new logo, exciting new incentives for the top performers, as well as offering positive recognition for all participating dancers in the form of commemorative medals. A huge coup this year is the confirmation that Delia Sainsbury, a well-respected and internationally recognised dancer, actress, television presenter and theatre pro-

ducer at Cape Town’s Waterfront Theatre School, will adjudicate the 2018 PEDF. An exciting incentive for aspiring dancers is the launch of the PEDF/Theatre Dance Association’s (TDA) Fabulous Trophy and Competition entry bursary for two talented dancers. Sainsbury will select her choice of the two most fabulous dancers who will each receive the fabulous trophy and entry into the sought-after regional Move! competition in Cape Town in September this year. This will include flights and accommodation for the two dancers and their chaperones. Move! Cape Town showcases a broad range of dance styles and offers fantastic prizes and the opportunity to compete in the national competition in Johannesburg. In addition to the many well-loved trophies and awards, every dancer will receive a recognition medal for their participation in the 2018 PEDF. The festival will culminate in a glitzy gala celebration which will feature the performance highlights of the festival as well as the awards presentation. The PE Dance Festival will be held at the Savoy Theatre from August 20 to September 1. Dance teachers from all studios in the Eastern Cape are invited to register their students for the festival before Friday, June 1 with PEDF secretary Carol-Anne Cash on pedancefestival@gmail.com or 084 502 3300.

The Friendship Bracelets.

COMPETITION: WIN JENNI GAULT JEWELLERY

Spoil mom this Mother’s Day YOUR mother is your first friend. “She is your greatest defender, both physically and emotionally. She has seen you at your worst and is the first to forgive. Your mother will give you the benefit of the doubt and the last piece of cake. From the moment you were born until now – there has been no truer and loyal supporter, your champion and friend,” said Jenni Gault from Jenni Gault International Jewellery Design. “She nourished you and protected you. Right by your side. From when you were hiding behind her skirt, to when she was beaming at school recitals. “Patching up scrapped knees and mending broken hearts. Mom had her heart in her mouth and put her soul on the line. “Your happiness is her best reward. Unconditional and unmatched, the love for you unbounded. Through rewardless teenage tantrums and heart-rending adult independence, she remains faithfully supportive. “Happiness, sadness, fear, excitement, anger, helplessness and joy are her stock in trade. You mother is your first friend, your best friend and your forever friend,” Gault explained. To honour moms this Mother’s Day, Jenni Gault has twinned the 4mm earring studs with the popular Friendship Bracelets. According to Gault, the new packaging was also well received in Istanbul Turkey recently

when Bruce Gault was invited over by the Department of Trade and Industry (Dti) on an outbound sales mission. His second visit to the historic trading capital, bridging two continents, Bruce said that the Turkish jewellery market offers many lessons for South Africa. The conditions for trade there are conducive to business growth and he is sure that the Dti were taking notes to bring the lessons back to South Africa. WIN! WIN! WIN!

The PE Express, in conjunction with Jenni Gault International Jewellery Design, is giving away fabulous prizes in celebration of Mother’s Day. The first prize, valued at R2 550, is a friendship necklace, a friendship bracelet, a pair of 4mm stud earrings and a R200 Jenni Gault voucher. The second prize, valued at R1 600, is a friendship bracelet, a pair of 4mm stud earrings and a R200 Jenni Gault voucher. Ten runners-up will also receive a pair of 4mm stud earrings and a R200 Jenni Gault voucher, valued at R650 each. To enter, like the PE Express page on Facebook and then simply answer the easy question: what is the name of the bracelet that you could win? Email the answer, your name and surname, contact number and physical address to info@jennigault.com. Winners will be contacted by Jenni Gault.

He came to our houseand performed his spiritual prayer which chased away all evils and demons that have been destroying my family into drugs and poverty. Prof Kula used his magic rats and short boys to bring money into our house, the same night. He helped us a lot, to pay our debts, bond, kids school fees. PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 9 MAY 2018

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull all in the mix FORMULA 1 heads to Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya this weekend for the fifth round of the 2018 season. Amid the enthralling on-track action of the season there has been many, significant, developments off it. First, it was recently announced that the aerodynamic rules for 2019 will be modified with the aim of allowing cars to follow each other more easily. This, the FIA hopes, will ultimately aid in overtaking. The revisions include a wider, simplified front wing and brake duct with no aero winglets and a wider and deeper rear wing that will increase the effectiveness of DRS. These changes are a bit of a quick fix for the 2019 season while the FIA is planning a comprehensive overhaul of the sport’s technical regulations for 2021. On the face of it, anything that improves the ability to overtake is a positive. However, sever-

al teams voted against the 2019 changes and for good reason. The changes proposed by the FIA aren’t trivial and will likely force several teams into completely changing the aerodynamic philosophy of their cars. And a redesigned aero package precipitates a redesign that will likely cost teams a lot of money. Elsewhere, the authorities of Miami will vote this week on a bid to bring F1 to Florida from 2019. The bid is being backed by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and with American-owned Liberty Media wanting to expand the sport’s presence in the US, it seems like a no-brainer. The first images of a possible layout for the Miami street track have been revealed and it features a, first-ever, bridge that runs across the water and back, an idea first touted by Bernie Ecclestone in the 1980s. With F1’s calendar already bulging with 21 ra-

ces it remains to be seen how a Miami GP will be slotted in. Meanwhile, there is a grand prix to be had this weekend around a circuit that teams and drivers know all to well. The Circuit de Catalunya has long been the preseason testing venue of choice meaning that teams arrive at the southern Spain track with a vast amount of data and know-how. Still, the cars tested in late February will be significantly different to what they arrive with this weekend. It is the traditional trend that the Spanish Grand Prix weekend sees several teams bolt on upgrade packages to their respective cars. While Lewis Hamilton may have taken victory in a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he has been decidedly lacking in his usually near-faultless form. Still, he comes into the weekend with a four-point lead over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel

and with the expectation of being near the sharpend of the grid. However, what has been most thrilling about F1 in 2018 is that no grand prix weekend has been predictable. Whether it be because of safety cars, pit strategy or outright pace, the potential has been there for at least six drivers to stand on top of the podium. Your money could be on Mercedes as they traditionally excel in Spain or Ferrari, who have seemingly built a car that can perform well at all circuits, including over one lap. Or you could put your money on Red Bull. After all, it was here that Max Verstappen won his first race and who would bet against an ultraconfident Daniel Ricciardo? If nothing else, this is what fans of the sport have wanted, and deserved, for several years – the beautiful unpredictability of Formula 1.

PELFA REPORT:

FRANCOIS ROTHNER

Legends League matches heat up PELFA Old Buck Gin League fans saw two very high-scoring games take place last week. Callies kept their unbeaten record intact when they thrashed St Albans 8-0 at Londt Park. Carl Pereira had helped himself to a hat-trick by the time the half-time whistle blew. However, after half-time, the floodgates opened. David Brooks and Nigel Bailey each helped themselves to a brace and a minute from time, Grant Rossouw found the back of the net from a neat flick by Ryan Harris. At Victoria Park Sports Club, Mahle Old Grey overwhelmed PE City 5-1. Jason Aitken opened the scoring for Old Grey 10 minutes into the game. City equalised in the 19th minute. Richard Clarke scored straight after City’s goal to put Old Grey ahead. Aitken got his hat-trick with goals two minutes after half-time and again in the second half. Julius Jogoo converted a peanut with a few minutes remaining on the clock. A seven-goal game at the Oval saw NMBM come out the winners 4-3 over Westpark. Bulelani Siwela and Lindiso Mpabanga scored for NMBM in the first half. Stevie Pugh curled a corner to put Westpark on the score sheet. By half-time, NMBM led the match 2-1. NMBM’s Shawn Sokiya helped himself to a brace in the second half, while Lionel Terblanche and Warren Brown each got a goal for Westpark. Kuyga Masters edged Central Acemates out 1-0. Mzikayise Jacob saved the day for Kuyga with a volley ten metres off the centre circle three minutes before the final whistle. Fairview Rovers and African Leopards played out a 1-1 draw. Leopards went one goal down from an own goal. Tabo Simane earned them a point with a goal midway through the second half. Priory got the better of Shamrocks on their home turf. Brent Kopps and Dustin Stokes had Priory 2-0 up at half-time. Siven Naidoo and Naj Padachie brought the game to two all. The fixtures for the fourth round of the PELFA Old Buck Legends League are as follows: Mahle Old Grey vs NMBM at Old Grey Sports Club at 19:00 African Leopards vs Shamrocks at The Oval at 19:00 Central Acemates vs Fairview Rovers, venue TBA at 19:00 Westpark vs Kuyga Masters at Londt Park Sports Club at 19:30 Priory vs Callies at NMU South at 19:30 St Albans vs PE City at St Albans at 19:30

Madibaz maintain lead in league SELBY MADIKANE MADIBAZ Football Club showed that they were the side to beat in the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League when they won all three of their recent games. The regional league champions took FC Winners to the cleaners in their first game when they thrashed them 3-1 in their game at South Campus Field. Madibaz whacked the embattled Amarhamba United 3-1 as well in their South Campus game on Friday and snatched a hard-fought away 3-2 triumph from Mabayibone Strikers in their third game at Walmer Fields on Saturday. As things stand, Madibaz are unstoppable and they have the potential to defend their league title. In another game, Camper United collected the six maximum league points in their bid to finish in the top eight. United defeated PE Sundowns 4-2

and demolished Hearts 6-3 at the weekend. Following their bright start to the season, Morning Stars

lost their winning momentum. Stars were dimmed by Young Ideas in their 1-0 loss at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Fairview Rovers also rubbed salt into the wounds of Stars after they defeated them 3-2 at Marock Round Field on Saturday. Young Killers went down 3-1 to Despatch Pioneers at Khayamnandi Community Fields on Saturday and again 2-1 to Highland Spurs in their Uitenhage derby at Jabavu

Stadium on Sunday. Match commissioner Jacob Frolick said the game between Roaring Tigers and Golden Aces was abandoned after 45 minutes with Golden Aces leading 3-1. He is awaiting the referee’s written report. According to Frolick, in another incident, match officials did not turn up for the game between Motherwell Academy and Ikamva Movers at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday.

Hearts’ Errol Jordaan is chased by Camper United defender Siyamkela Tshepo Khanyele.

Teams fail to honour games SELBY MADIKANE TO the dismay of many soccer supporters, a number of teams failed to honour their fixtures in the women’s regional league on Saturday. The hosting side, Tomorrow Stars, disappointed their loyal supporters when they failed to pitch up for their game against PE United on their home turf, Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. United were awarded three league points. Young Aces’ home supporters also saw their side being awarded maximum points after Kuy-

ga Ladies failed to honour their game which was scheduled to take place at Mawabo Dyubhele Community Fields at KwaDwesi. According to match commissioner Jacob Frolick, KUBS did not play against African Chiefs in Uitenhage because the local football association game was not finished by the time the women’s regional league game was supposed to start. Frolick stated that KUBS refused to wait until the local football association match ended. However, other games proceeded at various venues at the weekend.

League newcomers shine in seven-goal thriller SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Industrial League newcomers Tenneco salvaged a very close 4-3 victory over fellow “rookies” Contitech at Dana UTH Grounds on Sunday. Tenneco looked the better side in the first stanza of the game as they kept Contitech at bay. Tenneco scored world-class goals. Zaido scored a brace, while Thembela banged in a single goal which resulted in Tenneco lead-

ing 3-0 until the half-time break. Contitech came back strongly in the second half, as they kept Tenneco in their own territory. Mbuyisdelo Maloni came up with a brace for Contitech, with the scoreline being 3-2. The hard work paid dividends to Contitech as Maloni banged in an equalising goal from a penalty spot that sent his loyal supporters into raptures. The joy of Contitech was short-lived as Thembela scored the winning goal which made the final score 4-3 in favour of Tenneco.

Thami helps Young Ideas to victory SELBY MADIKANE THAMSANQA “Thami” Nzondana banged in two goals when Young Ideas defeated the highflying Golden Aces in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Aces looked as though they would win the game, but the host side made sure that they would not concede any goals. Ideas’ skipper and goalkeeper, Asanda Mari, was the busiest of the two goalkeepers. Whenever Aces launched attacks, Ideas defended in numbers. Ideas scored a beautiful goal

courtesy of Nzondana before the break. The Zwide supporters hoped that Aces would come up with a goal. Aces kept attacking, but they were exposed to counter-attacks. Aces held their heads high because they put Ideas under immense pressure. Following their relentless attack, Aces were caught in a counterattack with Nzondana scoring his second that helped Ideas to claim a 2-0 victory. The log leaders and the league title hopefuls Madibaz Football shared a 2-2 draw with Major Chiefs at Zwide Stadium. Despatch Pioneers defeated Camper United 1-0 in their game at Khayamnandi Grounds. Ikamva Movers played to a 1-1 draw against

FC Winners at Chevrolet Stadium. Roaring Tigers caused more worries to the relegation candidates, Mabayibone Strikers, when they edged out 3-1 at Chevrolet Stadium. Pace setters Morning Stars went down 4-2 to PE Sundowns at Zwide Stadium. In the Nobuhle derby, Amarhamba United managed to overcome Highland Spurs 2-1 at Jabavu Stadium.

Annual family run promises great fun this weekend REPORTER THE Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre will be hosting the 12th annual Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk on Saturday at 07:00 and it promises to be a great event. Since its inception, the event has grown yearon-year and has become one of the most successful and popular events on the athletics calendar for participants. “We welcome the star runners from all over the Eastern Cape,” said Les Barnes, president of the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club. “It is so encouraging to see the hundreds of primary school runners and family participation at these events.”

It will once again be a fun-filled family affair with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes, including a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge SuperSpar. “The school with the most bulk entries in the 5km race will earn themselves a R1 000 prize, so we encourage all schools to participate and support the event. There is also a special prize for the business/company with the most bulk entries,” said Suzanne Fincham, centre manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre. Other fun category prizes include first family home, parent and pram, dad and dog, and mom and tot. Timed results will be available for both the 10km and 5km events online at www.sunridgevillage.co.za. Entry forms are available at all shops at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, as well as sports

shops in Nelson Mandela Bay and can also be downloaded from www.sunridgevillage.co.za. Pre-entries can be made at Spec Savers or PostNet at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, and all major sport shops in Port Elizabeth, as well as Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage. Bulk and pre-entries close today, May 9 at 17:00. The organisers are aiming for a record-breaking 2 500 competitors. Festivities will kick off on Friday at 17:00 with preregistration and late entries in the mall. The prize-giving will take place directly after the race at 09:00 in the area adjacent to the Keg & Swan. Prize money for various age categories is up for grabs in the 10km race, as well as a gold, silver or bronze medal for all participants that finish before the cutoff time. I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.

She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 9 MAY 2018

New free app to boost maths and science results REPORTER IN many underresourced schools across South Africa, often with underqualified teachers, learners do not always gain the mathematical knowledge or skills they need to excel at school or to access universities. To give learners a better chance, Nelson Mandela University’s (NMU) Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC) has been using cutting-edge technology to boost teaching and learning in maths and science in secondary schools – and launched its second unique education app on Friday, May 4. The app, TouchTutor® Quiz, which is available free from the Google Play Store, provides mobile access to Maths and Science content, self-tests with feedback, multilanguage support and even school- or province-based competitions, linked to the Grade 8 to 12 school curricula for Maths and the

Grade 10 to 12 Physical Sciences curricula. The app can be downloaded onto phones or android tablets – which can be linked to data projectors for teaching in classrooms. “This new app can be used by learners, teachers and schools anywhere in South Africa. It builds on our existing programmes, which have led to improved understanding and real results in the classroom. “The new app will allow us to bring more innovation into the classroom and help even more learners, which we are really excited about,” said GMMDC director, Prof Werner Olivier. The quiz is a spin-off of GMMDC’s first app – the ground-breaking TouchTutor package – which is an offline teaching and learning resource that covers the complete school curriculum. This app, first introduced in 2012 and expanded each year until its 2017

completion, brings Maths and Physical science concepts to life for learners through offline video lessons, PowerPoint presentations and innovative software called GeoGebra – while also boosting their understanding through past papers, interactive self-tests and language support in several South African languages. Until now, the app has only been available as a tablet- or desktop-based “personal tutor” for learners in GMMDC project schools, and a laptopbased teaching resource for teachers. To date, more than 7 000 Grade 10 to 12 learners at more than 100 project schools have received tablets with TouchTutor support through GMMDC’s incubator school programme (ISP) or their tablet-assisted after-school peer support (TAPS) programmes, and more than 1 500 teachers from 450 schools have received laptops through GMMDC’s teacher development programmes. GMMDC has also set up tablet- and

desktop-based resource centres at most of the project schools – benefiting a further 10 000 learners. Over the past three years, more than 50% of the ISP and TAPS learners at project schools in Nelson Mandela Bay and other Eastern Cape districts, have enrolled for university study programmes. “Our aim now is to reach and support a much wider target group of teachers and learners via the new mobile app,” said Olivier. “A common thread through all our programmes has been our focus on harnessing accessible offline technology in a creative way to reach the new ‘screen generation’ of learners, who cannot imagine a world without TVs, mobile phones and computers. “Teachers of Maths and Physical Sciences are in desperate need of modern teaching approaches to connect and address aspirations and the content gaps of learners in South Africa.” Olivier said Friday’s launch was al-

so an opportunity to celebrate the “impact and maturation of the TouchTutor package after more than five years of research and development”.

14-year-old conquers tough ocean swim ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

HE has been swimming since the age of four, so taking on the recent Jendamark Bell Buoy Challenge was a breeze for Thomas Ivings, who at 14 years and 16 days was the youngest ever participant to swim in this race. Thomas, who is in Grade 8 at Grey High School, started swimming competitively at the age of seven and

now swims for Infinity Swim Club with his coach, David Glover. His mother, Karin, describes young Thomas as “a highly motivated and determined” individual who has always loved being in the water. “He has just recently come back from Cape Town where he participated in the regional Level 3 gala and brought home a bronze in 100m breaststroke and silver in 200m breaststroke,” said Karin. Besides swimming, Thomas loves

to plays water polo and hockey. Swimming, however, remains his first choice, and he has been swimming the River Mile for the past four years with great enthusiasm. He has now ventured out of the pool to the ocean and has participated in the ZSports Ocean Series for the first time this season. Thomas took on the Jendamark Bell Buoy Challenge, which is a 5km swim from Pollok Beach around the Bell Buoy and back, alongside his fa-

ther, Clinton Ivings. Thomas competed in the wetsuit category and finished in the top 50 out of 155 swimmers. “He was determined to finish the race, even with a strong current and ice cold water,” said Karin. According to event organiser Michael Zoetmulder, the Jendamark Bell Buoy Challenge is Africa’s premier Indian Ocean swim and the toughest Indian Ocean swim in the world.

This year’s winner was Heine Deysel, who was entered into the competition by his wife, after she wrote a letter explaining a little bit about her husband and why he deserved to win an entry into the IRONMAN. This was after he found out no entries were left, after months of training he thought he would just be a spectator, but his luck was about to strike. He has competed in a full IRONMAN before in 2012 as well as a half IRONMAN, and was looking to improve his previous performance. “My finish time was 13h05 and almost an hour faster than my first IRONMAN in 2012,” he said after crossing the finish line at this year’s event. When asked about how his race went, Deysel seemed to have a smooth day without too many troubles.

PE Express entry winner, Heine Deysel, (right) with Niel Louw after crossing the IRONMAN African Championship 2018 finish line. PHOTO:SUPPLIED “It went really well and dare I say according to plan. I had an above average swim with a good bike leg, but unfortunately started to cramp on the run. It was still an amazing journey and experience to take part in the IRONMAN African Championship 2018.”

Deysel’s achievement made the past seven months of training more than worth the effort. He took part in this year’s event with his long-time close friend and neighbour, Niel Louw. Deysel describes the highlight of this year’s event as “Most definitely running down the red carpet with the Red Cross on my chest and hearing the words ‘You are an IRONMAN’.” Deysel said he became quite emotional when he heard that he had won the competition after thinking that he would be just a spectator on the sidelines. “I firstly decided to do it with one of my best friends and neighbour, Niel Louw, which did it for the first time ever. Another reason that motivated him was to compete for the Race of Faith team, which is led by Brink Eksteen. “He (Eksteen) started this ministry in 2009 with seven ordinary people to get the cross of Jesus out there and to be ‘witnesses through fitness’.” Deysel describes the team as a family who are learning and growing “through each other’s stories and testimonies”.
