Fourth Annual

High Point Charolais Breeders Bull Sale

Saturday, March 28, 2015, 6 p.m. Deer Lake Farms, Singhampton, ON

Featuring: 32 yearling bulls

Welcome

Welcome to the 4th annual High Point Charolais Breeders Bull Sale. Once again we are seeing some pretty decent beef prices and the cow/calf business is finally showing some black ink on the balance sheet. The good news is that it seems to be working for everyone. I spoke with a longtime feedlot operator the other day and when asked about the price of these calves his response was, “I know my numbers, I know my cost of gain and today I’m still able to make a buck.” Add that comment to the fact that consumers are still eating beef and it all lends to what I like to call a sense of cautious optimism. Maybe those cows in the barn are worthy of a little extra attention after all.

Jim and Susan Baker and Family Sunrise Charolais 705-428-3205; jsbaker3205@gmail.com http://www.sunrisecharolais.com/

Priority number one, get them bred to a Brian & Doris Aitken good bull. Now having had a herd of 120 Bridor Charolais commercial cows for years myself, I know 519-323-2538; bridorcharolais@yahoo.ca http://www.bylivestock.com/bridor/ what you’re thinking; what’s that going to cost me? Well there have been many articles lately that help to determine dollar value in light of heavier weaning weights, but I’m not sure everyone understands the value of the “information” that comes from purchasing a purebred bull. Most everyone, especially in Eastern Canada, is concerned about calving ease. If that’s Doug, Earl, Cory, Ryan & Erin Briggs you, then there is significant value in Echo Springs Charolais understanding CE and BW EPDs. If you’re EMB Charolais 705-487-5840; briggserin@hotmail.com looking for performance or considering keeping back heifers then WW, YW, M and TM are important. A purebred bull also comes with a clear genetic history. For example, were his parents, grandparents, great grandparents noteworthy? Were they easy calving? Did they have milk ability? Did they have hair coat? Were they small frame or large frame? Were they polled or horned. This is valuable information and all of the bulls in the High Point sale come with it. They have all passed a semen test; that’s of vital importance. They are all from fully vaccinated herds. They have scrotal measurements and they have been weighed regularly in order to measure their ability to convert feed into pounds. I personally believe all of this information has a significant dollar value as long as, first of all, you understand it, and secondly, you use it wisely in deciding which purebred bull is right for your cows. Please give us a call, come for a visit, view the bulls, ask questions, tell us about your cows; we want you to make an informed decision. One of the unique characteristics of the High Point sale is the variety. Because the bulls come from multiple breeders with different programs there’s sure to be a bull or two here that will exceed your want list. New this year, all bulls will be available to view by video online at www.cattleinmotion.com. Friends, your door to a prosperous future in the beef business in now open—looking forward to seeing you sale day!

Spring 2015 Breed EPD averages:

BW WW YW M TM 1.9 43 76 19 41

Note: EPDs are not perfect or foolproof, but they do offer valuable information. Above are the Charolais breed averages. For example: If a bull’s BW EPD is less than 1.9 it is an indicator that his offspring birthweight should be below the breed average. Again, if a bull’s YW EPD is 80 for example, it’s an indicator that his calve’s yearling weight should potentially be 2 lbs heavier than the breed average. Likewise if a bulls EPDs for M (milk) or TM (total maternal) are above the breed average then his offspring have the potential to make “better than breed average” mothers.
