POINTS TO PONDER

From the Field Helge By

I am writing this the day after Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. It was a great event again this year and I think it sums up the fall of 2014 to this point in time. There were bigger crowds watching the shows and sales and the prices in the sales were all higher than last year. Cattle people are smiling with lots of enthusiasm and optimism felt throughout the industry at every level. Since my last article there has been a lot of activity in the Charolais industry. Many fall shows and a number of sales have already taken place and they have all been very good with more participation. There are a number of new breeders showing up and more definitely looking over the fence. The attendance at the show at Agribition by other breed people was very interesting. There are the December sales still ahead, and the interest indicates they will be strong as well. In October I attended the Canadian Charolais Association Board Meetings which had some very interesting discussions on genomics and research projects. There are some great things to come as we move down the genomic path to having a genomically enhanced EPD, or GE EPD as it will be referred to. As we start to do more DNA testing on our herds, we also need to have the accurate performance data from birth to yearling as well as production records to go along with it. I have had questions from many breeders about teaming up with the American International Charolais Association on some of this work. Basically, we need to put all our DNA and theirs together to develop the training panels, or in other words, to help find the markers for all the traits at a higher accuracy. This does not mean we will be going back to a North American EPD but rather we will take the training panel information or Molecular Breeding Values and combine them with our 6

performance data that has developed our EPD to then have a GE EPD. You will not notice any difference in how the EPD are expressed just that the accuracies will be higher than before. We are also hoping to use the Molecular Breeding Values to move breeding cattle between Canada and the US with some genetic prediction rather than having to start these cattle without an EPD. There are still many questions to be answered and things to sort out, but we are heading in the right direction in my mind. I read a quote from a Genome speaker that I thought was worth putting in here. “We don’t need to educate the commercial producer to understand and use the technology, they will just benefit from it by seedstock producers utilizing it for selection.” (Saying commercial producers don’t understand it is a cop out. Seedstock producers need to utilize it to provide a superior product.) Genomics shortens the genetic interval. Genomics are new and very complicated if you wanted to understand exactly how it works, but it is like turning on a light switch. You don’t need to understand how the electricity is made or transported to be able to utilize the light that it produces. Genomics won’t replace the need for visual selection or many things we do now as breeders of livestock, just like EPD didn’t. What it will do is give us a more accurate measurement of animal’s genotype and allow us to make faster progress in selection criteria that we deem important. Another topic that has been buzzing around the industry is sustainable beef production. I have wondered what this meant and why McDonalds has chosen Canada to be a supplier of sustainable beef. Earlier this fall there was a worldwide conference on the topic in Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of our Canadian Charolais Youth Association alumni, Fawn Jackson was one of the panelists at this event. Fawn is Manager of Environment and Charolais Banner • December 2014

Sustainability for the Canadian Cattlemen Association. Fawn has played the lead role in setting up the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and is Canada’s representation on the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. The GRSB defines sustainable beef as a socially responsible, environmentally sound and economically viable product that prioritizes Planet (relevant principles: Natural Resources, Efficiency and Innovation, People and the Community); People (relevant principles: People and the Community and Food); Animals (relevant principles: Animal Health and Welfare, Efficiency and Innovation); and Progress (relevant principles: Natural Resources, People and the Community, Animal Health and Welfare, Food, Efficiency and Innovation). Another interesting event for me recently was helping with the first Charolais online sale in Canada. Prairie Cove Charolais held this for three days the end of October. The sale was very good but this type of sale will not be for everyone wanting to sell cattle. There is a lot of work ahead of it with the picturing and videoing and although there is not the work of hauling them to town or running them through a sale ring, there is a lot more time needed to be on the phones and visiting with potential buyers. There have been a lot more of these types of sales in the US, especially in the clubby calf market, with good results for those that do the work and have the reputation cattle. Speaking of sales, the spring bull sale season is just around the corner and Craig and I are already working on our picturing schedules for the many ads and catalogues for the sales that will be happening. I hope that your bull pens are looking good and that you will feed and promote them to their fullest potential. I believe we are poised for a great bull selling season but you still need to work on

POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR

Du Champ Helge By

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS

Annual Semen Auction Sarah Weinbender, National Board President

Happy December everyone! I hope this finds you all keeping warm and getting ready for the holiday season. I had the opportunity to spend time at both the Manitoba Livestock Expo and Agribition this past month and would like to congratulate the exhibitors for bringing cattle that showcased Charolais in a positive way. It was very exciting to see so much enthusiasm surrounding not only the Charolais breed, but the cattle industry as a whole. With sale prices soaring across the country I am looking forward to the spring bull sale season! It has been an exciting time for the National Board as well! Our annual semen auction fundraiser was held in conjunction with the Charolais National Sale at the Manitoba Livestock Expo at the beginning of November. The National Board would like to send a huge thank you to our Semen Auction sponsors: Sliding Hills Charolais, Future Farms, Wilgenbusch Charolais, Hunter Charolais, Horseshoe E Charolais, Rolling Acres Charolais, Whiskey Hollow Charolais, J&J Trust, Linskov‐Thiel Ranch, Domek Charolais, Eaton Charolais, Southern Cattle Co. and Wright Charolais for providing us with a fantastic set of bulls to offer as well as our semen auction purchasers: Steppler Farms,

Rosso Charolais, McCaw Livestock and C2 Charolais. With the support and generosity of these breeders the fundraiser was a success, with all of the proceeds going towards the CCYA Leadership Scholarships that will be presented at the July Conference and Show. At Agribition, the Saskatchewan Charolais youth had an exciting opportunity made possible by Beck Farms of Milestone, Sk. The Beck family donated Becks Sassy 9B for a raffle fundraiser with all proceeds going towards the upcoming CCYA Conference and Show, July 22‐25 in Yorkton, SK. The heifer was won by McLeod Livestock, Cochrane AB and Kay‐R Land & Cattle Ltd., Waskatenau, AB then offered for sale and purchased by Steppler Farms, Miami MB. The Saskatchewan youth would like to extend their appreciation to the Beck, McLeod, Phillips and Steppler families as well as thank everyone who supported the auction by purchasing tickets! The fundraiser was an enormous success and will go towards making CCYA 2015 one to remember! At the end of October we unveiled our brand new website! K E E P I N G Track T E N I R Compte FALL BOARD MEETINGS Fall Board meetings were held in Calgary on October 19 & 20. There were a number of topics at hand this year and a productive meeting ensued. For personal reasons, John Wilgenbusch stepped down from the CCA Board of Directors. The Board will not be replacing the Provincial Director position for Saskatchewan at the present time but will at the next CCA Annual General Meeting. Brian Coughlin was elected First‐Vice President and Rod McLeod was elected to the Executive Committee as Second‐Vice President. Committee Chairs have confirmed their committees and are working diligently; enthusiastic plans and results are no doubt forthcoming. Doug Blair continues to work closely with the Breed Improvement Committee and the CCA in the area of genomics and what route the Association can take to incorporate genomics in our EPD evaluations. There has been thorough communication with AGI, Iowa State and AICA that is better preparing us for the future. CCA is now completing ALL DNA samples with SNP technology. The key to a solid DNA result is to start with a quality sample. It’s never really too early for a DNA test, but it can unfortunately be too late. Please request your DNA forms from the CCA Office. When submitting your samples its best to have a minimum of 65 hairs per animal. Breeders submitting insufficient samples will be subjected to additional fees. The EYE Committee would like to commend the youth that applied for the 2014 CCA Scholarships; the applications are getting tougher to narrow down each year as the calibre of submissions keeps getting stronger! Congratulations to Shae‐Lynn Evans of Kenaston, SK as the 2014 Recipient of the $1500 Dale Norheim Memorial Scholarship and to both Chloe Gresel of Erin, ON and Jade Marshall of Red Deer County, AB as the successful applicants receiving the two $1000 CCA Scholarships.

DECEMBER DÉCEMBRE

2014

The CCA has finalised details to continue our support of the Kinsella Project that is researching the “Improvement of cow feed efficiency and the production of consistent quality beef using molecular breeding values for RFI and carcass traits”. Kinsella has 125 purebred Charolais cows and are working to develop genomically enhanced EPDs for Residual Feed Intake and Carcass quality traits by optimizing their herd and its progeny. The project is a joint effort with various industry partners and utilizes the GrowSafe feed system. The 2014 Canadian National Show and Sale were an outstanding success in Brandon, MB. There was an enthusiastic buzz in the barn with over 110 head exhibited and a record National Sale average of $6797. The 2015 CCA Annual General Meeting will be an event you won’t want to miss as its being held in Friendly Manitoba, early summer! Canada will host the World as we welcome the International Charolais community for the 2015 World Charolais Technical Conference, June 22 through 30. The Conference will begin in Regina, SK and wrap up in Calgary, AB. The agenda promises to provide a mix of research facilities, feedlot and seedstock; as an added bonus we’ll have a glimpse into traditional Western Heritage with the Ponoka Stampede. Meeting topics throughout the conference will look into genomics, agricultural advocacy and sustainability.

REGISTRY REMINDERS • CCA Memberships are due January 1, 2015. Please report any change of account information to the office as soon as possible • All WHE females are to be enrolled January 1, 2015 • The CCA office will close for the holiday season on December 24 and reopen Friday, January 2, 2015. If you experience any trouble with your WHE during this time you can email the CCA office and we’ll be happy to help you after January 2 (late fees will not apply).

A Scugog Township family was recognized with the Durham Farm Connections Farm Family Award at the Celebrate Agriculture Gala held on Oct. 16 at the Royal Ashburn Golf Course. Steve Ritchie of CIBC presented the award to Trevor, Lorraine, Scott and Andrea, Ryan and Allison Nesbitt of Cedardale Farms, a multi‐generational farm family with deep roots in the local community. The Durham Farm Connections Family Farm Award acknowledges an intergenerational farm family with a history of progressive achievements and community service. The Nesbitts have hosted countless 4‐ H meetings and have held producer workshops at their farm. They are environmental stewards, using minimum tillage practices, cover crops and rotational grazing. In 2010 they received the Ontario Pasture Award from the Ontario Forage Council. In addition to their purebred Charolais cattle, they crop more than 1,500 acres, growing a variety of traditional and specialty crops. With two sons and their families now home farming, they continue to develop their marketing strategy and in 2004 held their first on‐farm bull sale, welcoming buyers from across Canada as well as opening their farm gate to neighbors looking for fellowship and a good lunch. All members of the family are involved in the community, volunteering with Lindsay Exhibition, Durham Region Cattlemen’s Association, Ontario Charolais Association, 4‐H Ontario and more.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported my program over the last 45 years. It has really been good being a part of this great breed. A special thanks to these buyers for making my dispersal sale a great success. I wish everyone the best of luck with these Full French cattle.

OPPORTUNITY

Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Jolene Noble, Canadian Cattlemen's Association CYL Program Coordinator

A national youth initiative of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Program provides industry specific training and mentorship opportunities to young producers between the ages of 18 and 35. CYL participants have the opportunity to explore a potential career choice or involvement with a provincial/national producer organization, while gaining the expertise and business acumen necessary to sustain the cattle industry into the future. Each year 16 CYLs are accepted into

the program and are then paired with industry leaders to begin their mentorship. CYLs have access to a $2000 budget to spend on expenses generated by attending events such as the CCA SemiAnnual Meeting, Beef Value Chain Round Table, and various industry events as well as meeting with their mentor. CYL presents its participants with the opportunity to travel internationally. CYL has sent delegates to events such as ILCUSA, CanadaUS Roundtable discussions, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Annual Convention, and Five Nations Beef Alliance Conference. There is a strong advocacy component to the

program with CYLs working at educational booths at events like the Toronto Royal Winter Fair and Calgary Stampede. The CYLs also have the opportunity to participate in training workshops for business skill development, board governance and succession planning. We are now accepting applications for CYL 2015 until January 21, 2015! These applications as well as additional information on the program are available on our website at www.cattlemensyoungleaders.com or by contacting Jolene Noble at the office 1‐403‐275‐8558, cell 1‐780‐887‐9446, or email noblej@cattle.ca

About Your 2015 Calendar The 2015 Charolais Calendar was produced as a joint effort between the Canadian Charolais Youth Association and the Charolais Banner. The calendar features 286 day gestation period dates in each day box (upper right corner), and the different coloured “weeks” coincide with the 21-day heat cycling period.

OBITUARY

Shirley Rosso 1942 – 2014

Shirley Rosso, Rosso Charolais, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan passed away on October 25 at the age of 72. Shirley had a big heart that allowed her to reach out far beyond the family circle. She took the 4‐H pledge to heart and demonstrated it throughout her life. 40 years ago, Shirley instigated the formation of the Old Wives 4‐H Club and 39 consecutive achievement days have been held at the Rosso farm. Shirley was in her 35th year as the general leader. She mentored, coached and taught the 4‐H program to her club with a vision and a passion that could be challenged by no one. She believed in all the aspects of the program. She would busy herself gathering poems and stories for the public speaking. The club was always represented at the public speaking and at every level. She would take pictures year round of all the activities and give the kids their photos to help complete their record books for achievement day. Christmas concerts attended by the community were always a busy time with the club doing poems, skits and Santa visits. Ten months a year, first Friday of

every month, the club met at the Rosso farm home with meetings held all over the house while Johnny entertained the “driver parents” with coffee. There was never a shortage of support, encouragement or snacks. That is over 350 meetings she has presided in 35 years. Shirley was also very involved with the inter 4‐H program. The Rosso motor home would roll onto the fair grounds and become the office for the show. Every club at the fair knew if you didn’t know something, go to the motor home. She recorded every weight and sale for the show all these years. When the fair was done, she would have the club host a buyers’ appreciation supper for the Old Wives 4‐H cattle. As the members would be leaving they would get one last reminder from the team leader – don’t forget the thank you cards! She was still on the District 8 Council board as a director. She also represented the RM of Hillsborough on the RM District 8‐ADD Board as a member at large. When the Spring Steer and Heifer Show and Agribition were on, you could always count on her to make sure the 4‐H components always had Old Wives 4‐H members participating. In 2002, Shirley was inducted into the

4‐H Hall of Fame. In the early 80s, the Old Wives Community Hall was moved to its present location and Shirley embraced the community club with the same determination and passion. This time the motor home would roll in as the extra kitchen for the fowl suppers, extra bar supplies for dine and dances, the booth for ball tournaments and lunch counter if there was an auction sale in the community. The Rosso home has long been the local coffee shop in the area and there was always a sweet treat served. Shirley served as the SCA secretary for a year, then became a shop owner, managing a retail outlet Merle Norman for 16 years. The store also became a place where people stopped to say hi and visit for a while. Shirley was an avid scrapbooker and possessed books with births, deaths and events of interest in the local community. Shirley and Johnny were inducted into the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honour Roll in 2008. Shirley is predeceased by son Victor, and is survived by husband of 53 years, John; son Darwin; daughter Alma (Rick) Wanner; son Kevin and grandchildren Brandt, Raelynne, Elene, Haley, Justin, Will and Megan.

OBITUARY

Newton Whitfield 1923 – 2014

Newton M Whitfield, of Estevan, and formerly Carlyle and Alameda, Saskatchewan, passed away on November 28, at the age of 91. Newton trained as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force and after being discharged in 1945, he studied diesel mechanics. He purchased a farm

in 1958 and married Jeanette Krieger. In the 60s, Newton and Jeanette ventured into the livestock business and decided to raise Charolais cattle – a new exotic breed originating in France. In the span of 25 years, they developed a respectable herd under the name JN Charolais. They were founding members of the 49ers Charolais Group, which hosted annual female sales in Estevan. In 1986, the herd was dispersed at a sale Charolais Banner • December 2014

at the Alameda Auction Mart. Newton and Jeanette lived on the farm until 1998. Newton was active in the community over the years serving with the Agriculture Society, Alameda Credit Union, Alameda Telephone Company, Alameda United Church, Alameda Legion and United Grain Growers. Newton is survived by his wife Jeanette and numerous extended family. 53

INDUSTRY NEWS

Canadian Beef Breeds Council Michael Latimer, CBBC Executive Director

In August, CBBC participated in a government trade mission to Kazakhstan. This is a market that most of you will have heard a great deal about over the last few years. In this article I am going to attempt to provide further insight based on my travels; in terms of market opportunities, challenges, and the people. To fully appreciate Kazakhstan you need to understand the history and how their culture has developed over the past several hundred years. The Kazak people are traditionally nomadic, managing their herds of sheep, goats, camels, cattle and horses by moving them around through the day and returning to the village in the evening. This continues in many areas today. The Kazak people have their own language but maintain close relations with Russia and most still speak Russian. This relationship with Russia pre‐dates the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan was the last country to seek independence. During the Soviet era, large numbers of non‐Kazaks were moved into the region, which still impacts their culture today. In the city of Almaty, there are over 100 different ethnicities. The Kazak people are generally peaceful and do not look for war. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Kazakhstan gained its independence, they were left with hundreds of nuclear

missiles and bunkers. This could have been catastrophic if they had chose to distribute them to neighboring countries (see a map for explanation). However, newly elected (and still current) Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev chose to peacefully work with the Russian, USA and European officials and dismantle or move the weapons from Kazak soil. This new alliance and the fact that Kazakhstan is rich in natural resources such as oil and natural gas, foreign investment flowed into the country. This has lead to low unemployment rates, and a relatively prosperous economy as compared to neighbor countries. This has also created opportunity for foreign agriculture producers as the country desired to become self sufficient in food production. Obviously the history is far more complicated and detailed than I have described, but it is difficult to appreciate how the Kazaks operate without considering their diverse and complicated history. Canada has been successful in importing a large volume of breeding stock into Kazakhstan. However, so have Australia and the United States. There is currently an interest in Canadian cattle, particularly for Hereford, Angus and Charolais. They compliment the native breeds of Kazak White Head and Auliekol. There will be increased opportunity

Charolais Banner • December 2014

for other breeds in the future, if the Kazakschoose to move to a North Americanstyle cross‐breeding system. There are thousands of acres of relatively unused grasslands similar to that of eastern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, but there is a lack of infrastructure and modern agriculture knowledge to utilize this land base. Our delegation visited a mixed farm outside of Kostenay that has 60,000 acres, 6500 head of cattle (dairy and beef) and employees 500 workers. They take considerable pride in the fact that they are able to provide jobs for these workers, but they are intentionally slow to adopt modern equipment as to not displace jobs. They are also proud that they have been able to maintain the collective farm from the days of the Soviet Union and still operate under communist principles. In fact, statues of both Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx still stand in the town square. As you can see the Kazak culture is complicated and varies significantlyby region and farm unit, which is one of many challenges to conducting business. It is important to maintain a presence and promote the ‘Canadian’ brand even when domestic prices are at record highs so that we have places for our cattle and genetics to go when times are tough at home.
