PDC Pledge Class Auction By: JT Wong
The second annual Phi Delta Chi pledge class auction was nothing short of epic. The sixteen Gamma class pledges offered a vast array of services ranging from washing cars, cleaning apartments, giving massages, date nights, and even car rides to and from southern California. The auction was a huge success with each pledge having their own individual PowerPoint slide with a unique song and a list of services they would be offering. The auction was hosted by Gamma Class's very own, Nhan Le. As the MC, Nhan would introduce each pledge, as their song would play in the background. Every pledge prepared a short skit for entertainment purposes that got the audience pumped up and excited to begin the bidding wars. Some of the more notable skits included Vivianne Nguyen playing hard to get as Usher's "Love in this Club" was playing overhead, Chappy Huang bustin' a move to Nsync: "It's Gonna be Me", and myself embarrassingly dancing around the classroom in a red morph suit. The bidding for all pledges began at $5 with the highest bid at a staggering $150. The auction lasted about two hours with a great turnout from students of all years with even a few faculty and staff members in attendance. In fact, Dr. Frausto and Dr. Brunner bought our entire pledge class to help them run an ultra marathon during the spring semester of 2013. Perhaps the most entertaining event of the entire auction came at the end when all 16 Gamma class pledges partook in a dancing skit that Dennis Togonon choreographed. The Gamma class was dancing in sync to a Jesse McCartney song that definitely got all of the men and ladies attention in the audience. Overall, the auction was a major success and an amazing experience for all of us in the Gamma class. We grew closer by working together to promote the auction and to help one another create a truly memorable experience. Having spoke to some of the attendees, they mentioned how entertaining the auction was even if they did not win a bid or had no intention of spending money. With a total of 16 pledges we raised $1261.00, which far exceeded our original expectations. This fundraiser was our biggest source of funding for the pledging process and it showed each one of us Gammas' that each needs the help of the other.
