Danilo Medina reelected Highest Result ever for a Dominican President / Offer to collaborate with Opposition

Although the official results of the elections still have not been released after four days, it is absolutely sure that President Danilo Medina is reelected. After the counting of nearly 90 percent of the vote, it is clear that he is leading with almost 62 percent before his challenger Luis Abinader, who just got a little over 36 percent. With more than 62 percent of the votes, Danilo Medina has the highest ever achieved result in an election in the Domi-

nican Republic, higher than Professor Juan Bosch, founder of the PRD, now led by Miguel Vargas Maldonado who brought the former people's party down to a meager five percent, which is an ally of the PLD, also founded by Bosch, who got 59.53 percent of the vote in 1962. Bosch was toppled by the military in 1963 and afterward the United States occupied the country. In 1965, Joaquín Balaguer got 57 percent of the vote, and Leonel Fernández (PLD) could convince 57.11 percent of the voters for his second term in 2004. Still, it was a very controversial election. The ruling party PLD was accused by opponents to have ruthlessly plundered the state treasury to finance the election campaign. Opposition parties accuse the Electoral Commission (JCE) under Roberto Rosario (in the leadership of the PLD) to be biased and to cheat in the counting. Guillermo Moreno (Alianza País) even said he would not congratulate Danilo Medina, because he was not a legitimate elected president.

The day after the election, President Medina appealed to the public and told the elected representatives and mayors of the opposition parties that in him they had an ally who will not prosecute them, just because they belong to a different party. Much more, he wanted to work together with them, so that the country will be progressing in every respect. In relation to his election, Medina said, the people elected a president who responds to the people to the street, to whom people can come to discuss their problems. Danilo Medina emphasized that it is the first time that the PLD alone had more than 50 percent of the votes, without its allied parties. He will not disappoint the country and the people who trusted in his work, and who reelected him. He will work to build a stronger middle classin the next few years. This victory will help to consolidate what has been achieved until today. He wanted that the young people know that the state is on their side and will help them to progress.

Protests after Elections Luis Abinader: We will fight for each and every vote / Four Provinces for the Opposition The map is again almost uniformly purple. 28 of the 32 provinces of the country fell to the PLD, three less than four years ago, when the entire Senate was controlled by the ruling party, except for La Altagracia, where the then allied PRSC won the Senate seat. Puerto Plata fell to the PRM, the new senator is José Ignacio Paliza who replaces Francis Vargas. El Seibo in the East also went to the PRM, in San Pedro de Macorís, the senator is coming from the PRSC, and San José de Ocoa goes to the BIS. In the capital Santo Domingo David Collado (PRM) replaces the previous mayor Roberto Salcedo (PLD), who had occupied that post for 14 years. 50 mayors go to the opposition, 300 to the PLD.

The international election observers were more or less satisfied with the election process. Unasur congratulated the country for its high turnout (70 percent), however, complained violence during and after the election, in which six people were killed. The OAS called for a profound reform of the electoral process and complained the buying of votes and cédulas (no cédula, no vote, thus the cédulas of known opponents are bought) as well as technical problems.

There were happening weird things, such as the resignation of 3,000 “technicians” one day before the election, who should operate the electronic devices, which led to delays in the counting. Nobody knows who they are. Did they ever exist? The head of the Electoral Commission, Roberto Rosario (PLD) announced, contrary to all agreements, first results already half an hour after the voting closed - many of the polling stations still were open for one more hour because of the people who could not yet vote. After closing, the counting drama started. Since all ballots had to be recounted by hand, no official results were available four days after the election, which resulted in violent protests in parts of the country. Many candidates compete in a head-to-head race. Luis Abinader criticized President Medina - he called for unity, while his men tried to grasp everything. However, he will fight for each and every vote the voters gave him.

“Vida para el Ozama” Nine Tons of Plastic Garbage every Week / Garbage for Food / Environmental Initiative Recently, the newspaper “Diario Libre” reported on the initiative “Vida para el Ozama” in which residents of the river, which divides the capital Santo Domingo, collect plastic waste on the shores of this former lifeline and change their collection for a food package once a week.

Who has not yet experienced that from a preceding car there is thrown out plastic waste in a high arch - often including food scraps? There are shocking photos from the completely cluttered Yaque del Norte River in Santiago, where everything is “deposed of”, from plastic and slaughterhouse waste to any kind of chemicals. But beside of these completely ignorant and disinterested environmental pigs there are also existing initiatives that are trying to draw attention to this ignorance and try to mitigate its devastating consequences for the population. Unfortunately, the causes are fought much too little, mainly only damage control is performed.

The initiative was launched by volunteers of Banreservas and Padre Manuel Ruiz in December 2013. Today about 1,200 families collect three bags of plastic rubbish at around 7.5 kilo each, and get a bag of staple foods in return (see photo above right). This initiative was extended on the Yaque del Norte River in May 2015.

Sylvia Hazoury, commissioner of the volunteers of Banreservas, says, this plastic waste is sold to a recycling company, with the aim to recycle it to its raw materials which are sold to abroad. The money earned flows back into the program. The Dominican Republic daily produces 11,200 tons of garbage, ten percent of which is plastic waste.

What Would You Do? by Joe English

In the United States the legal system has little to do with guilt or innocence. Process is more important than end result. Rapists and murderers walk free because of technicalities. In the Dominican Republic, things are different. When you place your trust in another, it becomes impossible to guard against betrayal. Eight years ago my car was stolen in Sosua. I knew who the thief was, an American who for ten years had been a close and trusted friend. He had stolen not only my car, but linens, dishes, pots and pans, towels, and a television. It was he who introduced me to the Dominican Republic, a country he visited for many years while I had been going to Jamaica. It was his lifelong dream to retire here and, with my help, he did. I bought a house in Villas Karibik with a lovely garden and large swimming pool. He would be here full time, while I would only be able to visit now and then since I was

still working in Chicago. He paid me $300 monthly for the home and use of the car, with my paying the expenses: cable, internet, electric, cooking gas. Sounded like a fine and dandy plan and, indeed, all was well for a year and then some. But, as the Scottish poet Robert Burns writes, “The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft a-gley [go often astray].” Via email he promised to return the car once he no longer needed it, perhaps in a month. After fruitless back and forths in cyberspace, I went to the Sosua police. You need an attorney to handle this, they told me. The attorney I had used to buy my house in Villas Karibik, Yanilda de la Cruz, was excellent, honest and competent, but I could not see her in the role of Darth Vader. “Could you make a recommendation?” I asked. Half an hour later two rumpled men appeared, straight out of the movie, “The Godfather,” or, better yet, the television

series, “The Sopranos.” Hallelujah! It would cost me $1,000—$500 deposit, $500 once I had my car back. I provided a copy of the vehicle registration and a picture of the thief. I told them that I thought he was in Santo Domingo, but couldn’t be sure. This was late on a Saturday afternoon. About 9 p.m. the following day they returned my car to me. They had found both thief and car in La Capital. In addition, they handed me a signed and witnessed confession. I paid them the second $500. Now, they told me, if you pay us a third $500, we will see to it that one who betrayed you, who put you through emotional hell, who stole your car and possessions spends three years in prison. What would you do? LA PLAYA is interested in your opinion. Would you have made a third payment of $500 to see to it that the thief spent three years in prison? Email to laplaya.dominicana@gmail.com. The results will be published in one of the next issues. Joe English retired in 2013. He moved from Chicago, Illinois, USA, and now lives in Sosua.

Your Horoscope for June 2016 Stable Time for Leo / Success for Cancer / Rough Time for Aries / Aquarius to be careful

From the very first days of the month, try to concentrate on the most essential points. Do not overlook any single detail; summarize and organize all the available information. Be careful in choosing your allies! It is good to be friendly with everyone, but you should reveal your plans only to those who really deserve it. Also, don’t be too discouraged if you fail to sign an apparently very important contract.

Do not try to respond to the events happening around you too fast. The efficiency and speed will now take a secondary role. It is more essential to act thoughtfully and make sound and well thought-through decisions. Do not rely too much on others. Keep in mind the good old saying: if you want something done right, do it yourself. Be a little more vigilant and responsible than usual.

You will have to go through a rough patch. But it would be wrong to say that it will be an extremely negative time for you, during which you can count on nothing good. The situation won’t change fundamentally very soon, so in order to achieve the desired results you will have to work really hard. Fortunately you will have a sufficient amount of vital energy throughout the entire month. Always remind: Hard times don't last forever.

Do not come to a standstill, even when you realize that you’ve already achieved all the desired results. You are capable of much more than that, especially if the people you work with believe in you. Focus on moments that carry a significant meaning for you. If you believe in the corporate idea, no problems should arise on your horizon. Otherwise, don’t be afraid to doubt things and ask questions, though in moderation.

You will encounter a lot of situations where circumstances and opinions of those who you trust will radically contradict your actions. Stay alert! Because, on the one hand, it's you who may be mistaken, on the other hand, the opinions of others might be erroneous too. The world is too complicated to be one hundred percent certain about anything. Just try to evaluate and judge events around you neutrally.

This month you will succeed in absolutely everything. Even your best friend might envy your luck! This means that throughout the first month of summer success will be awaiting you in all possible directions without exceptions, both in your sensoryemotional as well as financial and working spheres. But if you overestimate your own strength, or underestimate your opponents, you won't gain the anticipated result.

This will be a stable and confident time. What is of particular significance is good planning, a combination of strategy and tactics for the use of available resources. Do not hurry to make decisions, even if they seem too obvious for you. And avoid relying on third-party opinions regardless of their source. Try to be aware of all the events taking place around you. Pull yourself together and remain vigilant.

Everything is simple: if by now you succeeded in stabilizing the situation at work and received a positive impulse for your further dynamic development, then from now on these tendencies will be strongly reinforced and will provide you with new opportunities. If, on the contrary, you previously failed to overcome the main negative impacts from your environment, then now it will be much more difficult.

Your working and financial side of the will be as stable as never before. In reality, all the events taking place around you will be most logical and will perfectly fit your “world view”. But do not lose your vigilance, even when things turn out the way you want them to, especially when everything works to your advantage! In relations with your colleagues, stay unbiased, because, after all, everyone has his own vision.

This month may be rich in all sorts of dilemmas and challenging situations. As a matter of fact, there’ll be nothing lifethreatening; you won’t have to deal with any really ambitious and large-scale tasks. Keep in mind that in the end you will reach your goal in any case. The peculiarity of this life stage lies in a rather different point. You will have to be extremely vigilant in dealing with your colleagues or business partners.

The circumstances, in general, will be positive, but not in every aspect, so even though you won't be required to make excessive efforts, still you shouldn't count on good luck too much. Try to make sure that all your areas have “eyes and ears”. Don't doubt those who you trust, but at the same time don't let things get out of control, no matter how small and petty they may seem. With this in mind, focus on your main goal.

Your working area will be characterized by a well-defined, evident and fairly anticipated decline in dynamics. You will be fully aware of the processes taking place around you, so it will hardly be a surprise that all your working moments will acquire a slower pace. On the one hand, it will be necessary, and on the other one, it’ll be the result of your own decisions. But this does not mean that the decisions you made were wrong.

Vaginal Ring against AIDS An antiretroviral Medicine is released in small Doses / Is the End of the Epidemic close? In a new attempt to win the battle against AIDS, the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) presented a vaginal ring which had been developed in ten years. It is designed to protect women, particularly in developing countries where millions live under a high risk of infection. This vaginal ring is made of silicone and is used the same way as a ring for contraception. It contains an antiretroviral medicament that is released in small doses.

Zeda Rosenberg, who has founded the nongovernmental organization in 2002, said: “Although many say the end of the epidemic was near, the battle is not over yet. There are still a lot of women in sub-Saharan Africa that are newly infected every day. The vaginal ring must be renewed every four weeks. The ring is an attempt to curb the epidemic in the region, where women aged 15 to 24 years have double the risk of becoming infected with the HIV virus. Often even by rape.

With this vaginal ring, women can take control of their health, without having to negotiate with their partners, says Rosenberg. By the end of 2018, the ring could be for sale on the market. Its price should be below five dollars. One of the biggest challenges will be to work with the local communities and to explain to them the benefits, because the young women will not dare to use the vaginal ring otherwise.

“Legendary Artist”

Star on the Walk of Fame

Omega Love, Peace and Harmony?

The Spanish cuddle bard Julio Iglesias has now been honored by the BrandLaureate of the Asia-Pacific Foundation for Brands as “Legendary Artist”. The award will be handed over to Julio Iglesias in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on the 2nd of June. According to the organizers, Julio Iglesias needs no introduction at all. In his 50-year career, he has sold 300 million albums in 14 languages. For his more than 80 albums released, he received 2,600 certified gold and platinum records. Julio Iglesias was a global icon that is recognized in all the five continents - including with the price as the first and most popular international artist in the People's Republic of China. The foundation, established in 2005, has the goal to award marks in order to promote them and to inculcate values of brands of companies, sports, culture and entertainment in the people. Before Julio Iglesias there had been others who were honored by the Asia Pacific Foundation for being brands, for example Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, the Nobel laureate in economy Robert Fry Engle, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg or the actor Harrison Ford.

After Omega El Fuerte (the strong one), star of Música urbana, once again had to go to jail for three months because of violence against a woman, he published a photo on the Internet that shows him together with the woman who charged him with violence against her. The singer and Sahira Valerio would have reconciled, wrote his manager Vismark Ayala. “The family is the most important, which is why we thank God that he has heard the prayers and has overcome the mishap of this relation.” The meeting of the couple was held in the prison of La Victoria, under the new model for prison, where visits of partners are allowed. After a first sentence Omega was locked away for three months because of physical and psychological violence against the mother of one of his children, but Antonio Peter de la Rosa, Omega's civil name, appealed against the verdict, which then was rejected by another judge. Omega keeps affirming that all allegations of violence against women were invented by his enemies in order to harm him personally and to destroy his career. In the current case, the strong one is accused of having beaten his partner in a “cabaña” and of having forced her to perform sexual acts against her will. Shortly thereafter, Sahira turned to the public in the TV-program “Famosos Inside” and said that this was an old photo. She had been in Santo Domingo the last time for a judicial hearing and have never visited Omega. She did not understand what is the intention of the publication of this photo on the Internet.

The 71-year-old Mexican actress and singer Angélica María will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as the only Latina this year. The daughter of a US musician and a Mexican film producer was in front of a camera for the first time already at the age of five years. Throughout her career, the artist who was born in New Orleans but raised in Mexico, recorded around 60 albums and had roles in dozens of films and television series. In 2008, Angélica María was awarded the Latin Grammy for her musical life work.

Paloma San Basilio No more Retouching The now 65-year-old Spanish singer Paloma San Basilio said at the launch of her first book, she had no plans for a new album at the moment. She had also come to terms with age and will make no further retouching. And she also accepted her wrinkles now.

Soy medio maniático, antes me trataron mal. Hoy puedo estar bien, mañana no quiero ná, ah, ah. Mujeriego soy, pla pla pla pla pla pla pla … Soy mujeriego, mamá, y tu no me va aguantá! Mami, no es por ná, pero tu no me vas aguantá. Me gusta vacilar con los panas, beber e irme a janguiar. Tu no me vas aguantá, ah ah. Me gusta vacilar con los panas, beber e irme a janguiar.

El Nene La Amenazzy. On the weekends I do not stay at home. You know, nice guy, you always have to change the flow. If it is not in Gengo, it is with the “tígueres” on the Plaza, poaching a mummy, who gives us everything. Oouuaah! Hands up, this is a robbery! But don't get used to, that's not for long. I don't want to fall in love, because later I don't get away. I'm half crazy, before they treated me bad. Today I can be good, tomorrow I don't want anything, ah, ah. I am a womanizer, pla pla pla pla pla pla pla ... Who hears me, can misinterpret. That the woman doesn't interest me. But that's a lie, two or three times they have turned me, when I gave my whole heart, they sent me away. What I think is, to see that if I fall in love again, I will stay with the Klan, being a lot of bad choir. I ignore the one who wants to harm my mind, and because of what they did to me before, I am now a womanizer, pla pla pla pla pla pla pla ... The boy is now running around freely and carries on to party. He has enough change and exploits it with the Niggel, if he does not put on Jordan, he puts on some Nikel. Many can not bear it but, madman, what does it interest me. Despite the dough we meet quietly. The Chantys come to us. This you don't even have to say. Wo wa. I am a womanizer, Mom, and I don't deny it. But don't get angry, that I express myself. You'll be grateful to me, that we don't extend this, Mama. I am a womanizer, Mama, and you will not stand me. Mom, it's for nothing, but you will not stand me. I like to have fun with the buddies, to drink and go to hang around. You will not stand me, ah ah. I like to have fun with the buddies, to drink and go to hang around.

What is he singing? “Mujeriego” by El Nene la Amenaza His previous song “La Chanty” was banned because it supposedly is glorifying drugs. But El Nene La Amenaza (The Boy, the Threat, aka “Amenazzy”) with this very catchy Reggaeton still is played in all radio stations or discos of the country.

José Daniel Betances was born in Santiago de los Caballeros. Under the stage name El Nene La Amenaza (The Boy The Threat) or “La Amenazzy” he is the new star of Música urbana and currently causes a stir with his fresh style. It is always a good advertising for a singer when a song is forbidden, such as “La Chanty”, only because he sings about a girl that rolls a joint. This song then has been viewed by the curious youth eight million times on YouTube. The now 20-year-old started his professional career three years ago. El Nene plays a gentle Reggaeton which is received so well also by the American public, that “El Amenazzy” was offered a recording contract, and with its new sponsor “Ulloa Production” he will go on an extensive US tour in June and July.

So I went to her and said, „Come on, baby, just give a break to a guy like me!“ She ignored me completely and continued writing. So I called her a stubborn broad. She just looked at me and started to write another ticket for worn tires. I called her a stupid bitch. She began to fill a third form. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I offended her, the more tickets she wrote. But I did not care. My car was parked around the corner.
