N E W S B Y T E S Committed to poverty reduction, PBSP is the largest corporate-led social development foundation in the Philippines. It is the first of its kind in Asia leading the promotion and practice of corporate citizenship.

Business empowering the poor

LEADING THE WAY IN CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP Aroma of a good life It used to be a hard life for coffee growers in Davao, but when Nestlé Philippines opened the doors to its demonstration farm for free training, things turned for the better for some 30,000 small farmers and their families. In line with its philosophy of Creating Shared Value, Nestlé Philippines is helping farmers learn better ways to cultivate their crop. This partnership leads to better income and stable livelihood for the growers while ensuring reliable coffee supply to produce Nescafé.

Power to change Nestlé is also greening its supply chain. The company mentors its suppliers to engage in environment-friendly business practices. It has convinced 13 outsourced distribution truckers to be involved in the MotolitePBSP Balik Baterya Program’s Project LEAP (Learning Enhancement Assistance Package). Through the Balik Baterya Program, Ramcar, Inc. collects used lead-acid batteries for proper recycling and production of new automotive and industrial batteries. With PBSP as its partner, funds from donated batteries go to improving basic education in the Philippines. Nestlé and its truckers have chosen to adopt two schools, the Teresita Elementary School and Ambalgan Elementary Nestlé Philippines holds its 2nd ULAB collection activity for its truckers in support of the School in Sto. Niño, South Cotabato. Motolite-PBSP Balik Baterya Program’s Project LEAP. Through CSR that is integrated into their core businesses, Nestlé and Ramcar, Inc., both PBSP members, have realized corporate gains, created added value for their stakeholders, protected the environment, and supported better education for public school children.

At the heart of business PBSP has been advocating these types of core business approaches to CSR for many years. In 2007, PLDT and PBSP Chairman Manny V Pangilinan said in a message to business leaders that “the challenge for strategic CSR must be to get a company to identify a specific set of societal problems that it believes in, and is best equipped to help resolve, and from which it can gain a competitive benefit.” PBSP offers a range of services to help companies develop and implement their corporate citizenship strategies. PBSP FIGHTS POVERTY Reducing poverty in Iloilo

Environment champions

“PBSP lent us PHP 3 million which we used to purchase palay and trade our rice produce in 2008 soon after Typhoon Frank destroyed our crops,” Carlomagno Salapantan, 45, chairman of Aganan River Federation of Irrigators Association, said. “We earned one peso more per kilo of palay,” Salapantan added. “The biggest change is that we now determine the selling price of palay.” The disaster rehabilitation project resulted in income growth for more than 800 families pushing them above the poverty threshold of PHP 11,910 per month. Additional 1,000 households realized various levels of income increases. Salapantan’s federation is faithfully repaying its loan with a payment rate of 100%. With the members’ contributions this year, PBSP will expand its poverty reduction program in Iloilo. Some 8,000 farmer-households, or half of the estimated poor families in 30 communities in Iloilo, will receive long-term support to ensure sustainable livelihood while addressing education, health, and environmental concerns.

Local governments to fight TB Tuberculosis kills around 75 Filipinos every day. Six of 10 deaths occur among the productive age group of 1564 years old. To help control the disease in the country, USAID/TB LINC will give technical assistance to the League of Municipalities in the Philippines to cover capacity building, advocacy, promotion, legislation and education costs. LMP will reach out to leaders from 390 municipalities in 18 provinces. We expect that working guidelines and advocacy programs will be developed to convince local leaders to make TB control a priority. As a result, municipal ordinances that will allocate local government resources to control TB in the community should be passed.

Medical assistance reach underserved Bicolanos

Protecting Cebu’s coasts and canopies

A total of 632 families in Bacacay, Albay will now have better access to basic healthcare, thanks to Pfizer Philippines’ BLUE House, a two-year health and wellness initiative.

Cebu will once again gleam green with a PHP 19.4 million reforestation project by the Visayan Electric Company (VECO).

The company is providing PHP 2 million to construct a health station in Barangay Sula, the most medically underserved community in the municipality. Basic medical equipment will also be provided. The project will also promote health and wellness-seeking behavior among the residents.

VECO, a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corporation, will build a reforestation park in Barangay Pong-ol Sibugay and Sudlon 2 located within the Central Cebu Protected Landscape, and a mangrove plantation in Mactan Island. The project aims to increase upland and coastal biodiversity while providing alternative income for farmers and fisherfolk.

With its contribution, Pfizer is strengthening PBSP’s Poverty Reduction Program in Bicol. Together, we want to improve the livelihood income of Bicolanos, provide them access to basic services, strengthen their organizational skills, and preserve the environment.

PBSP will implement the community involvement component of the project in line with our commitment to reduce poverty.

PBSP helps businesses achieve their corporate citizenship goals. The Foundation operates nationwide to allow member companies reach more communities, including those in conflict areas. We work better together, contact pbsp@pbsp.org.ph.

A SALUTE TO GIL He started as one of the project officers— ““P.Os” as we call them—PBSP’s vital link tto the communities that we want to help. He knew the job from inside and out; what ssocial development really means, and h how a community could be led toward a b better life for families. Our POs work very h hard, but their success is measured when tthe communities claim the victory over p poverty as the work of their own hands. T These are what Gil Salazar taught us: h hard work, dedication, service, and yyes, the PBSP distinction of enabling d development to spring forth from the dreams and actions of the poor.

MEMBER RESOURCE AND PUBLICATIONS Renewal of Commitment “We count on our members’ commitment, financial support and active involvement to keep PBSP on the forefront of relevant change and development.”

That PBSP is the partner of choice of many of the largest donors can be attributed, in no small way, to Gil’s prudent management of the resources entrusted to our care. After 28 years of dedicated service, our Executive Director has retired from PBSP. If figures could summarize Gil’s accomplishment as ED in the last nine years, let’s just say that everything doubled during his watch—grants and other revenues (2.8 billion pesos more), assistance to the poor in the form of grants (2.5 billion pesos more), number of poor served (yes, 2 million more)…. Maraming salamat, Sir Gil!
