Introducing LUX International’s New Office in Florence, Italy

La Casa degli Archi

Is located in the oldest part of the village of Pitigliano, a beautiful Tuscan village perched on a tuff rock cliff with origins dating back to the Etruscan civilization over 3000 years ago, right on the tuff-stone cliff facing south overlooking the beautiful Italian country side of the Grosseto region of Tuscany. Dug out from two old store houses, this fabulous villa extends over 200 square meters and can host up to six overnight guests. A beautiful entrance parlor with stone tile floors and a large adobe style fireplace greets every guest with the warmth of home. Off to the right is a large master suite with original two foot stone casing around the arched doorways, a full bath en-suite and an area for sitting down for some quiet time to catch up on your laptop. Follow the original stone steps to the lovely dining room and large living room with oversized arched windows overlooking the Tuscan Countryside. A charming updated kitchen with range and refrigerator allow guests and owners to cook any favorite Italian dish. Then take the original stone cave pathway with tiled steps the second bedroom en-suite with a beautiful bath and a glass covered lighted hole to show you the original cave of 3000 years ago. The third smallest bedroom is tucked away off the corner of the living room. There is also a sofa bed, central heating, and many modern amenities without taking away from the history and charm of the villa. The Village of Pitigliano is quiet and peaceful but affords many incredible architectural wonders as well as a fantastic museum right in the heart of the village. Within a 45 minute drive are fabulous historic villages with souls of their own; a world class spa complete with mineral swimming pool; and many unbelievable restaurants and cathedrals to spend hours in. Florence is approximately a 3.5 hour drive and the sea is less than 1.5 hours away. Don’t miss one of the most enchanting villages in all of Tuscany as well as the grace of the local residents and vistas.

On the cover:

The painting Self Portrait by Lesley Morrow won our firstever online Naples Charity Register cover competition. We asked local artists to submit works that convey philanthropy, community, sharing or charitable giving. Morrow, who has lived in Southwest Florida for 13 years, says this piece is personal and represents giving her heart to the universe. “Art is all about giving,” she says. “This piece is about giving all to the world, sharing big love. It’s about sending out help where it is needed.”

s a parent, I often wonder how we can best instill a charitable nature in our children. I am surrounded all the time by people who seem to have an insatiable appetite for giving and offering their time, skills, professional knowledge and monetary donations, or even just taking a moment to listen to someone. How does one become a person like that? We often hear that children learn by example. I know this from personal experience—I was blessed to have parents who were always willing to lend a hand. They were subtle about it; that was just their nature (and still is for my mother, who is alive and well). My mom did committee work and my father had his own personal style of giving. I remember opening our front day one day to a man with a bandaged hand holding a giant television, saying it was for my father. He was a television repairman who had severely damaged his hand (which was essential for his livelihood), and he had no insurance or money to pay his medical bills. The man mentioned that my father, a physician, had not charged him and said he was happy to help. The gentleman said he was a man of pride and could not have fed his family had it not been for my father, so this was his gift to us. My sister once relayed a story to my father about seeing a man stealing meat in the grocery store. Without hesitation, my father asked, “Did you buy it for him? He was obviously hungry.” He saw only the good in people. We have more than 130 charity events listed in this issue. Now that takes a lot of good people! Thousands of volunteers and man-hours are required to put these parties together—endless hours of sitting around board tables, working out the details, calling friends and businesses for support. Thankfully, all these folks recognize the great need. These are the people who care enough to affect change, and we are grateful that Collier and Lee counties have an abundance of them.

otice something different about this year’s Naples Charity Register? We’ve given the sixteenth edition of our indispensable annual guide to local nonprofits and their events a fresh, new look—beginning most noticeably with the front cover. During late spring, we called on local artists to submit original works illustrating hope, philanthropy and community. Since the Charity Register always has been a community-based effort, we let our readers decide which of the submissions would make the most fitting cover. Their votes were tallied, and the honor was bestowed on Lesley Morrow. Lesley’s painting, about which you can read on page 10, reflects her heartfelt, personal conviction about giving to others. In addition to the new cover, logo and overall design, we’ve added some new departments, including a photo album of season’s scenes (page 19), which highlights all the fun and excitement to be had while promoting a good cause, and “Shop for Good” (page 26), cool things to buy that give back. And to underscore how the many social gatherings make a big difference in the lives of others, “Parties With a Purpose” (page 30) illustrates how money spent at events pays off in several ways for so many in our community. As in previous years, the most prominent and useful feature of the Charity Register is the section dedicated to the charity listings (starting on page 55). As you plan your social calendar, you will no doubt turn to the 132 listings in this magazine numerous times for dates, locations and, most important, information on the missions of hard-working nonprofit groups all over Southwest Florida to help you decide how to strategically distribute your charity dollars. We hope the energy of the Naples Charity Register’s content and design inspire you to get out and make this year the most successful ever for all of the philanthropic organizations that are counting on your support.

A’llawna is an extremely intelligent 9-year-old who battles with oppositional defiant disorder and ADD. When she was referred to the new Children’s Community Action Team she was having violent outbursts, getting suspended and was kicked out of her after school program. Explosive arguments with her mother resulted in routine Crisis Unit admissions. Through the program’s familycentered intensive mentoring and treatment services, they received the comprehensive support necessary to overcome the loss of her beloved father and learned behavior modification and anger management skills. The team also got her into more challenging gifted classes. Today her relationship with her mother has never been stronger and they are now savoring all the joys that childhood brings. f o r M e n t a l We l l n e s s

Her Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. A’llawna is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. Looking for more GROWTH AND INCOME? Here’s why dividends may be the answer. U.S. companies generated $1.75 trillion in free cash flow in the last 12 months — nearly double the amount from 10 years ago.2

40%

of total stock returns come from dividends.1

Many are using this extra cash to raise dividends — companies have paid $350 billion in dividends over this time.3

Payout ratios are still near 50-year lows, suggesting plenty of room to rise.

Master Plans What’s trending for charity soirees? We get the buzz on decor, themes, entertainment and more from some party-planning pros

By Kat Smith

With so many parties each season for so many deserving causes, it becomes a challenge for a charity to create an event that will maximize attendance and raise the dollars needed for plans and programs. We asked some Naples event-planning gurus for insight on what’s in store for this season’s whirl of gatherings designed to enthrall while raising all-important funds.

To create buzz, think unique entertainment, craft cocktails and beers, unexpected venues and eyecatching color and props.

SERVE WITH A TWIST “There is definitely a move to have more fun and less programming during events,” says Rufino Hernandez, owner of Garden District. “As the demographic in Naples changes, groups need to adapt to the way they pitch their causes.” Kellie Jacoby, who runs her own firm, J Cubed Marketing Inc., finds that groups are thinking outside the box. “They are looking for unique venues, creating an interesting environment,” she says, such as the Everglades Foundation’s ForEverglades Naples at The Revs Institute, where guests mingled and took pictures by the rare car collection. “Cocktails are also being remixed to fit the craft craze, from craft beers, to whiskey and bourbon,” Jacoby says. She served Moscow Mules as a signature drink at a party she created last season. “We wanted something cool and fresh.”

For more formal galas, Margaret Short of Margaret Events says organizations are looking for more subtle experiences. “Instead of events building quietly from a cocktail hour to a live auction and dancing, organizations want to start with a wow factor, setting an exciting, upbeat tone right away—and maintaining it throughout the evening,” she says.

Decor Elements

Both Hernandez and Jacoby believe the Pantone Color of 2014, Radiant Orchid, will be a thematic hue. Hernandez also points to the prevalence of strong color palettes, and says beautiful fabrics and flowers will drive the infusion of color. “However, the use of custom large props will dominate the social scene this year,” he says. Short also sees strong colors in the mix for season 2014-15. “We’re seeing red and neon. Reds like crimson, scarlet and cranberry for evening events, and neons and dayglos for daytime events,” she says. “The Gypset—glamour gypsy—look will be hot this year,” Hernandez says. “It’s about color and pattern, and working the two into interesting combinations to create a well-traveled, curated look.” He’s working on three or four events incorporating this theme. 28

NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

028-NCR PARTY TRENDS-2015.indd 28

9/30/14 4:55 PM

One constant is change. “Everyone wants an event to be fresh, with so many events held each year,” says Jacoby. “No group wants to lose people because the event is tired and not exciting.” Details are what make the difference, she says. Focus on things that are special or new to the community to create the wow factor. According to Hernandez, “the trend of peppering events with unique entertainment will continue.” An example from last season is the Humane Society Naples Pet Lovers Gala, where “aerialists performed overhead, and singers belted out tunes from auxiliary stages, while costumed dancers pranced throughout the room.” Look for themes that reflect the charity’s focus, says Jacoby. One example she specifies is the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s upcoming “OneNight” gala, which will convey the sense of urgency on one night and a focus on type 1 (one) diabetes. We may see more elaborate soirees as well. “Five years ago, we were in the middle of a recession, so the themes were more conservative, smaller in scale. Today, that’s not the case,” observes Short. She says organizations are talking about such intricate themes as masquerade ball, Monte Carlo casino, burlesque/Moulin Rouge and baroque. Some advice on what to avoid: “Anything that will make your guests feel uncomfortable,” Jacoby says. “For example, if guests are asked to dress in a theme that is difficult to incorporate into reality, it just makes people feel awkward.” Also, Great Gatsby parties have run their course, says Short. Regarding decor trends to pass on, Hernandez says, “the chevron pattern is dead in my book, along with mason jars and burlap. Enough already!”

On the Radar

Look for some more elaborate themes, such as Monte Carlo casino, masquerade ball, burlesque and Moulin Rouge, says party planner Margaret Short.

Money Matters

The challenging economic climate of past years has eased, but it left event organizers cautious. Short says groups have started increasing budgets, but “they’re being smarter about their money. They want to maximize impact.” Jacoby finds charities are not necessarily spending more, but attendance is up, so costs for venue space, tables, chairs, food and beverages will rise. “With ticket sales increasing, the generosity of patrons will offset any increased expenses to support a worthy cause,” she says. Hernandez sees top-notch event planning and adequate spending as key. “The groups making the most strides in terms of brand awareness and fundraising recognize the importance of events and of professional guidance when it comes to decor and event themes,” he says. “The days of throwing down a tablecloth and a small floral arrangement are gone. Events need to be developed from a holistic approach, not piecemeal. I believe there is a direct correlation between dollars raised and good decor and theme,” he adds. Still, it is important to be mindful about the appearance of reckless spending while still providing a great experience, he says. “A seasoned event professional can help guide groups through the maze of planning and selecting the right lighting, props, linens and collateral items to create a cohesive look.” NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

with a Purpose

Opportunities to give in Southwest Florida are practically limitless. From supporting our veterans to making sure no family has to travel for health care, we have myriad deserving causes to support. Take a closer look at four nonprofits whose dedicated staffs create memorable events that do more than entertain—they serve to improve life for all in the place we call home.

Good Time: The Latchkey League Signature Events Good Deed: Capital Fund for the new Youth Center

Once the final school bell rings, more than 10,000 children across Collier County have nowhere constructive to go until a parent returns from work. The Fran Cohen Youth Center, scheduled to open fall 2015, will be a home away from home for 400 kids every day. Operated by The Salvation Army Naples, the 22,000-square-foot center adjacent to The Salvation Army campus on Airport Road will host classrooms, art studios and a full-size gymnasium. The Naples chapter of the nationwide charitable organization approached long-time philanthropist, children’s advocate and founder of the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, Myra Janco Daniels, to chair the capital campaign and help bring the project to life. “I have no children of my own, but I have plenty around town,” Daniels says with a smile. Two years later, $4.2 million of the $5 million goal has been raised—including a $2.2 million donation by another notable Naples philanthropist,

Janet Cohen, in honor of her daughter Fran. Daniels recognized that raising the dollars needed to open the center was only part of the answer. A strong cadre of helpers is essential to ongoing success. Launched by Daniels a year ago, the Latchkey League’s 445 members are dedicated to raising funds for the capital campaign as well as for scholarships to ensure all of Collier County’s children can attend the youth center, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The league raised $125,000 through a series of 10 signature events ranging from a Persian dinner, to a Guys and Dolls-themed gala, to a Kentucky Derby Party. League members will also serve as volunteers at the youth center. For Daniels, the Latchkey League is about more than providing a physical space to better the lives of Naples’ youngest residents. It’s about building the next generation of leaders. “Many children never have anyone tell them ‘You can do it.’ We hope to be their cheerleaders,” she says.

Good Time: The Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest Good Deed: Southwest Florida Children’s Charities’ Health Initiatives

What is something that delicious cuisine, award-winning wines and world-class children’s health care have in common? The Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest. Presented by SWFL Children’s Charities Inc., the two-day event has raised $11.4 million since 2009 for its main beneficiary, the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, and other children’s health initiatives. Following a pledge to raise $10 million for a new family-centered health facility, the organization is well on the way to meeting its goal. The 2014 event added $2 million in donations, bringing the total to more than $8 million. Chef-vintner dinners in homes from Naples to Captiva Island and a Grand Tasting at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club may be draws—the event made Wine Spectator’s list of the best charitable wine festivals, after all—but the live auction is the big star. Items up for grabs have ranged from the adventurous (a 17-day trip to Southeast Asia) to the practical (a fund to purchase much-needed pediatric cardiology equipment, which quickly raised $455,000). A long-standing tradition is auctioning off an artwork created by a young patient that is then donated back to the hospital to 32

brighten the space. A pencil-and-watercolor drawing of Lightning McQueen from Disney’s animated film Cars will join previously donated art at the children’s hospital’s current home on the second floor of HealthPark in Fort Myers. Wine & Food Fest co-chairs Elaine Hawkins and Dorothy Fitzgerald call Golisano “the little hospital that could,” citing its growth from a hospital within a hospital to the facility’s future state-of-the-art home, which will be the only comprehensive children’s medical center between Miami and Tampa. The event also supports two local programs that help bring care to children throughout the area: the music therapy program at Florida Gulf Coast University and a scholarship fund for the pediatric nursing program at Florida SouthWestern State College (formerly Edison State College). The new children’s hospital broke ground in April and has an expected completion date in 2017. Although the $10 million pledge stands to be satisfied with the upcoming festival, Hawkins and Fitzgerald are already looking forward. “The work doesn’t end with the building,” Fitzgerald says. “It’s just the beginning.”

Good Time: The Wishmaker’s Ball Good Deed: Make-A-Wish Southern Florida

For most 13-year-olds, days are filled with school and friends, not doctor visits and chemotherapy. Naples native Megan Barreneche had something to look forward to during her battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma—attending the star-studded Hollywood movie premiere of Ocean’s Twelve. More than 10 years later, Barreneche’s wish has proved much more than a single moment. It set her on a path to a career in the entertainment industry. Now 25, Barreneche lives in Orlando and works on shows at Walt Disney World. “It has always been one of my dreams to work behind the scenes of movies and shows. I’m so happy to be fulfilling that dream,” she says. “I can honestly say Make-A-Wish was a part of achieving that.” Approaching the end of its thirtieth anniversary year, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida has granted more than 9,000 wishes to children facing life-threatening illness. That’s a long way from the chapter’s humble beginnings; just two wishes were granted in the first year. Wishes are made 34

possible thanks to year-round fundraising events like the signature annual Wishmaker’s Ball. Barreneche, along with nine other wish recipients, was invited to be part of the 2014 celebration illustrating the impact that the wishes have not just on the children and their families, but on the community as a whole. The most powerful moment of the night for Barreneche: meeting the generous folks who made her wish possible. “I was able to meet people in the area who are granting the wishes of tons of kids, including my own,” she says. “To be able to meet the person who sponsored my life-changing wish was incredible.” The most recent gala raised $125,000, enough for about 25 wishes. Granting wishes is the only goal of Make-A-Wish. Senior Special Events Coordinator Lesley Colantonio says that the local medical community refers young patients to Make-A-Wish, so there is plenty of work to be done to meet the demand. “We’ve had more than 70 referrals this year,” she notes.

Good Time: The Celebrity Martini Glass Auction

Good Deed: PAWS Assistance Dogs and Honor Flight The Celebrity Martini Glass Auction (CMGA) began not as a charity fundraiser, but as a fun evening with friends inspired by the Cosmopolitan—the signature cocktail of the ladies in the Sex and the City HBO series and movies. Today, the event has grown into a star-studded evening to support local nonprofits through the one-of-a-kind works of art. For the premiere of the first film in 2008, CMGA founder Brenda Melton challenged friends to design a glass for their girls’ night out. For the second film two years later, the glasses progressed from DIY to vessels crafted by local artists and designers. Impressed by the results, Melton reached out to the stars of the franchise to sign the glasses. Around the same time, the Naples International Film Festival was looking for fundraising opportunities. The glasses and the festival seemed like a natural pairing to Melton, and the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction was born. In the years that followed the first CMGA, the profile of the auction has increased. The 2014 event featured glasses autographed by A-list celebrities, including Jennifer Lawrence and Sting, which were transformed into artistic 36

representations of the signers by artists across the country. This event raised $300,000—a large jump from the $21,000 the inaugural event raised. After years of donating the majority of proceeds to the film festival, Melton looked to her own family when choosing new charitable partners. “My father served 21 years in the armed services, my husband was a marine and my father-in-law was a navy medic,” Melton says. “I wanted to do something for those who serve.” She selected PAWS Assistance Dogs, which provides service dogs free of charge to veterans with combat-related disabilities, and Honor Flight, which gives heroes of World War II and beyond the opportunity to visit the national memorials built in their honor. Melton shows no signs of slowing down. She added a new event this year to bring bidders closer to the recipients of their generosity. In November, The Lucky Seven event will give the seven highest bidders of the 2014 CMGA a chance to name one of the seven service dogs funded by the auction’s donation. While Melton believes a charity event doesn’t have to be serious, the CMGA proves that the results can be.

William and Barbara Meek

Owners of the Harmon-Meek Gallery for more than three decades, William Meek and his wife, Barbara, share a passion for art. The couple established the Harmon-Meek Fund to provide art programs for disadvantaged children through the Boys & Girls Club, Grace Place and Youth Haven. William has also organized three fundraising events that generated more than $300,000 for the Naples Art Association and worked with American Master artists to secure donations of 60 works of art valued at more than $1 million, which eventually became the foundation for the Modern American Masters collection that started the venue now named The Baker Museum. Their commitment to philanthropy has also inspired their daughters: Kristine, who serves on the Naples Zoo board of directors and committees for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, C’mon and The League Club; and Juliana, who is on the board of the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida and has served on the gala committee for David Lawrence Center. Local Charitable Support: Boys & Girls Club, Grace Place, Youth Haven, Naples Art Association Insight: Says Barbara, “You can’t teach someone to be philanthropic, but you can set an example.” —Christina Wells

When the Naples Equestrian Challenge–a therapeutic horseback-riding program that helps 500 people with special needs per year–decided to expand, Connie and Gary Sharpe stepped up and presented a $200,000 donation that will allow the organization’s space to grow from about four to six acres. Connie, who serves on the NEC’s board of directors, grew up around horses on a farm in Ohio, and learned to ride while still in grade school. She volunteers three times a week at NEC, helping to

Ellin Goetz and Michael Watkins

Although they champion different causes, wife and husband Ellin Goetz and Michael Watkins share an important goal: helping the next generation. A landscape architect, Goetz has a passion for protecting the environment, and was moved to action after seeing changes begin in Naples since she moved to the area. She started the Southwest Florida Land Preservation Trust in the late 1980s, and also became part of an effort that led to Conservation Collier. Both organizations focus on preserving the environment. Watkins aims his efforts at helping underprivileged children. Among his efforts, he has been making donations to The Education Foundation—Champions for Learning, a Collier nonprofit investing in innovative ways to help students learn, for more than a decade. Local Charitable Support: Southwestern Florida Land Preservation Trust, Conservation Collier, the Everglades Foundation, Champions for Learning, Fun Time Early Childhood Academy Insight: “When you help kids grow up nicely, the whole world is better. After hearing that some local children were going to school who did not have their own underwear, Jackie Bennett’s initial efforts to buy some to take to a school eventually led to a plan for a cocktail party with her friends that raised $5,000 for the cause. Then Bennett learned that many youngsters were also in desperate need of school uniforms, and she saw this unmet need as her chance to give back. As a result, she established a foundation: In 2012, she officially launched Angels Undercover, which has donated more than 15,000 uniforms, plus underwear and socks, to more than 7,500 needy students in 11 different Collier County elementary schools. Judy and John Hushon

Judy and John Hushon are determined to preserve what makes Naples special, from its vibrant culture to its lush environment. A Harvard-trained biochemist, Judy specialized in environmental toxicology, a background that makes her a crucial asset to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, to which she has contributed countless hours and dollars. Judy has used her scientific expertise to conduct studies of pesticides in South Florida waters and has testified on environmental issues on behalf of the Conservancy. She volunteers once a week as a naturalist on the nonprofit’s educational boat tours. And this past spring, the Hushons made a financial contribution for naming rights to the Policy Center on the third floor of the Eva Sugden Gomez Environmental Planning Center as part of a $38 million renovation to the Conservancy campus. Since 2002, the Hushons have donated more than $100,000 a year to local nonprofits, including the Culinary & Hospitality Education Foundation of Southwest Florida, of which Judy is president. John’s passion projects have focused on the arts, specifically the Naples Art Association and Opera Naples. Four years ago, he joined the NAA board to help the nonprofit retool itself as an artistic resource for the community, he says. The Hushons have made significant financial contributions towards the building of a 400seat theater in East Naples for Opera Naples, of which John recently became chairman. Local Charitable Support: Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Culinary & Hospitality Education Foundation of Southwest Florida, Naples Art Association, Opera Naples Insight: “People are aware of the paradise that we live in, and there is certainly a desire to keep that intact,” John says. —Brian Patrick Eha

Cheryl Barber

Cheryl Barber

After touring PACE Center for Girls in Immokalee, Cheryl Barber turned to the girls and asked them how she could help. Their wish: shade. PACE motivates girls to reach their goals, but the grounds of the eight-year-old center were not exactly inspiring. The courtyard was

paved with bricks commemorating the donors who helped build the center, and not much else. “The girls didn’t know it, but they hit upon one of my passions in life—gardening,” Barber says. With her initial donation of $300,000, the courtyard transformation is phase one of a renovation of the grounds. The project added an irrigation system along with boulders to provide shaded seating areas near the live oaks, pitch apple trees and other native plants. The garden, unveiled in May, provides the shade the girls longed for. The green space will be used for education and recreation, a tranquil place to enjoy lunch or read a book. The PACE girls will have an active role in the garden as well, including educating visitors on the plants. Local Charitable Support: PACE Center for Girls in Immokalee Insight: “The garden shows them that I think they are worth something beautiful,” Barber says. “It’s about self-esteem.” —Lauren Daniels

Pat Murphy

Volunteering more than 10,000 hours, fostering nearly 250 kittens and acting as a major financial supporter, Pat Murphy has become a key figure at Humane Society Naples. Last summer, Murphy and her husband, Jim, were the first to take part in HSN’s new charitable gift annuity, which allows donors to support a nonprofit while receiving a fixed payment for life. The couple has also made major contributions to HSN’s Spay/Neuter Assistance Program and provided donations to name both of the kitten rooms. Murphy, who owns eight cats herself (some adoptees from her foster care), also brings kittens to local nursing homes for weekly visits. Local Charitable Support: Humane Society Naples Insight: “What a horrible decision it is for people to have to make, when they come in with a sick or injured animal and have to put them down because they can’t afford to help them,” Pat says. “I want to help people who come into situations like that.” —T.E.

These family connections are a major reason for the couple’s recent donation of $6 million to renovate the emergency department at NCH Healthcare System’s North Naples hospital campus. Although the new emergency room will be divided between children and adults, the bulk of the MacDonalds’ donation is going to the pediatric side, which will feature a whimsical environment complete with customizable lighting in the treatment rooms that allows young patients to choose their favorite color. When kids in Naples want to see what life was like at the turn of the last century, they visit Palm Cottage, the Naples Historical Society’s showpiece and the oldest house in Naples. For Mary Smith, the chairwoman for the Naples Historical Society, Palm Cottage was one of the reasons she chose to donate $1 million to the society last fall. Passionate about history and a lover of beautiful things, Smith was moved several years ago to help restore the cottage after finding it run down and badly furnished. Her love of the past does not imply a lack of foresight: Smith’s generous donation will seed an endowment to keep the society running for a long time to come. Decoding

Dress Code

the

Social season has arrived—and your datebook is packed with charity soirees, cultural galas and holiday festivities. With each invite comes that perennial conundrum: What to wear? Sometimes a specified dress code provides some guidance—Beach Party, Black-Tie Optional— but many have become so cliché that dressing fete-fabulous can be even more challenging. For instance, when a celebrity golf tournament calls for “athletic attire,” should you hit the links in a super-sporty designer dress, or opt for sophisticated activewear instead? Or, for a black-tie affair, would a bespoke suit be acceptable, or will only the archetypal tuxedo suffice? With help from three Naples style gurus, we deconstruct a trio of dress codes, provide what-to-wear tips and feature some of our favorite picks from the upcoming season.

By Kerry Shorr

Naples Chic

Definition: Subdued sensibility with a sophisticated twist Dress tips: There is a reason Coco Chanel’s famous quote, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury,” is one of Naples’ favorite mantras. The city’s fashionable residents believe comfort and great style make the perfect pairing. “The trick to this look,” says Marilyn Hellman, owner of Marilyn’s Distinctive European Fashion on Fifth Avenue South, “is balancing practical pieces with current trends.” She suggests a feminine silhouette, such as a cotton dress or linen-blend separates, in a neutral palette like white, cream, grey or beige. Don’t discount the tunic or an oversized jacket as a partner to pants. Add zing with crisp florals and bold graphics. For galas and black-tie events, long gowns may

be the autopilot pick, but shorter cocktail dresses won’t raise eyebrows. Dressing don’ts: Avoid calf-length hemlines, as they may not flatter legs and ankles. Unless playing a sport is involved, men’s shorts should be skipped. For men: Classic cool is the name of the game. Hellman recommends a pastel linen suit with a tailored shirt or knit top. For black-tie, stick with a traditional tuxedo and dark neckwear. Accessories: For women, keep jewelry tasteful and minimalistic and invest in one of the season’s colorful carryalls. A scarf offers easy elegance and a protective layer against the elements and chilly air conditioning. For men, smarten up any outfit with suede loafers sans socks and a woven fedora.

Garden Party

Definition: Stylish, flower power regalia Dressing tips: As the name suggests, these parties are (mostly) held in the great outdoors, and most commonly in the spring to commemorate holidays, births and new beginnings. Unlike other alfresco-style events, like barbecues or picnics, “these tend to be more formal and require dressier apparel,” says Marissa Collections Assistant Manager Kira Hvidsten. When attire isn’t specified, consider factors like weather and the type of gathering. Floral prints and bright, citrusy shades in airy fabrics like silk, organza and light cotton will complement the surroundings and keep skin cool. For casual affairs, Hvidsten encourages wearing dresses with longer hems, like maxis, and knee-length ones if the venue is more formal. Dressing don’ts: Regardless of the event, shorts and flip-flops are not appropriate, says Hvidsten. Don’t pack on too many juxtaposing prints and stay away from dark fabrics. For men: Channel the “guy-in-a-garden” look with brightly colored rolled chinos, a button-down shirt and a lightweight blazer in navy, khaki or seersucker. Accessories: For women, hats are usually expected and wedges or low pumps will help keep heels from sinking into the ground. When wearing a busy print, keep jewelry reserved and let the ensemble shine. For men, trade sandals for a pair of ankle boots or closed-toe kicks and add a contemporary timepiece.

Dressing tips: Post-work cocktail parties may not require guests to dress extravagantly, but everyday corporate wear simply won’t do. “These events do carry a more deluxe, higher end connotation,” says Sherrill Dixon, Fifth Avenue Club director at Saks Fifth Avenue, Naples. “Fabrics are more lavish, and everything—shoes and jewelry included—is more elegant.” Choose pantsuits, skirts and dresses in luxe materials like silk, satin, lace or brocade. Dixon also recommends pieces that make an impact, such as a short, sequined shirt or a silk jumpsuit. A little white dress is ubiquitously classic, or pick a pale hue like light blue or lilac instead. Dressing don’ts: Casual clothing. “Daytime clothing is not appropriate, especially for an evening event,” says Dixon. Men should also steer clear of polos, short-sleeved shirts and Florida-inspired prints. For men: A dark suit or a jacket with sharply tailored trousers looks dressed up, day or night. Accessories: For women, bright baubles work best for monochromatic attire. A pair of statement-making pumps and one of the season’s “It” bags will take the ensemble up a notch. For men, opt for whimsical neckwear and loafers in leather or textured hide.

Need more style assistance? Here’s some help:

Definition: Business basics with a first-class upgrade

Play Sherlock. The answer to unlocking the “dressiness” of a dress code may be found on the invite itself. Expensive card stock, raised lettering and gold engraving are telltale signs of a fancy shindig. If no clues are forthcoming, call the host and ask. She or he will be happy to fill you in. Ask a stylist. Those people walking around your favorite boutique or department store do more than haul your picks to a dressing room and ask if you want a different size. They know a lot about trends and the season’s must-have essentials. If you have questions, ask. Plus, that good advice is gratis. Theme 101. If you RSVP for a themed event and have zilch to wear, you cannot show up in your street clothes, no matter how nice they are. Hit your attic, a costume shop, party store or one of Naples’ many consignment shops and pick something appropriate. You are sure to wear it again, on Halloween, for instance.

AMIkids Southwest Florida

Angels Undercover of Collier County

Archangel Fund for Collier County Charities

Since opening its doors in 1991, AMIkids Southwest Florida has helped more than 2,200 Lee County teens transform from troubled youths to productive citizens. AMIkids SWFL combines academics, counseling, behavioral treatment and vocational training opportunities that lead to a 90 percent success rate. The caring faculty and staff provide a long-term, comprehensive approach to helping our children succeed within the community.

Angels Undercover promotes education by providing underwear, socks and uniform T-shirts and shorts to elementary schoolchildren in Collier County who would otherwise come to school inadequately dressed. By giving the children basic clothing necessities, we help them arrive at school with confidence and ready to learn.

The Fine Art of Living series raises funds to support programs that improve the lives of the underprivileged in our community. These funds are disbursed through the Archangel Fund for Collier County Charities. In 2014, we will distribute funds raised to agencies focusing on mental health, shelters and exceptional services.

Catholic Charities of Collier County

The Celebrity Martini Glass Auction

CAN helps local low-income cancerstricken children and adults by providing nonmedical financial assistance, group support sessions and educational information while they are in chemo or radiation therapy. CAN pays rent and utilities so families in Collier and southern Lee counties won’t be evicted or lose utilities while they are too ill to work. CAN also helps feed these families and supplies gas so they can get to their treatments.

The mission of Catholic Charities of Collier County is to fight poverty, strengthen families and build communities. Agency services and programs shall ensure human dignity and enhance the quality of life for all persons, regardless of race, creed, color or religious affiliation.

The principal fundraiser is an annual auction that features more than 20 martini glasses autographed by A-list celebrities. The signed glasses by local artists as well as artists from all over the world are designed specifically around the celebrity’s accomplishments. The 2015 auction will benefit PAWS and Honor Flight. Through the power of art, we can make a difference in the lives of those who so bravely served our country.

Community Pregnancy Clinics

Community School of Naples

Conservancy of Southwest Florida

Community Pregnancy Clinics offers professional, compassionate care for pregnant women. We specialize in caring for women who are facing an unexpected or unwanted pregnancy. With a difficult pregnancy come difficult choices, and women need the facts to make an informed decision based on a culture of life.

The Community School of Naples, an independent pre-K3 through grade 12 college preparatory school, believes that providing financial assistance to qualified students is consistent with the overall school mission and that it enhances our ability to enroll qualified and deserving students who might not otherwise be able to attend. The Angel Ball is the main source of funding for the CSN Financial Aid Program.

The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is a grassroots environmental organization founded in 1964 that is dedicated to protecting the region’s water, land, wildlife and future. This is accomplished through the synergistic efforts of environmental education, policy, science and wildlife rehabilitation.

The Rotary Club of Naples

Russian American Museum of Art

Saint Ann Catholic School

The Rotary Club of Naples is the local club for Rotary International. The organization funds numerous local charities and was founded 64 years ago. The club’s primary fundraiser for the past four years has been Grapes and Apes at the Naples Zoo, before its move to the exciting new venue on Fifth Avenue South. One of its funds is Polio Plus, which supports efforts to stamp out polio worldwide.

The Russian American Museum of Art (RAMA) bridges two of the most diverse cultures through art. By exhibiting Russia’s best contemporary and historical paintings, it familiarizes the American public with Russian traditions and promotes cultural exchange. It initiates mutually beneficial dialogue between Russian and American artists. RAMA aims to complement art education in Southwest Florida, and strengthen the region’s position as a cultural destination.

The Seaside Celebration is a fundraiser that helps support Saint Ann Catholic School’s technology program as well as fund campus improvements.

St. Matthew’s House

Salvation Army

The organization’s mission is to change lives in a spiritual environment that is both compassionate and disciplined, as well as provide housing for the homeless and food for the needy. St. Matthew’s House is the only housing facility and feeding ministry for the homeless and hungry in Collier County.

Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Last year, we helped 47,659 Collier residents with emergency financial aid and food programs, affordable day care, after-school care and summer camps. We organize annual Christmas Cheer programs that give food, toys and clothing to thousands. This year we will be the official Toys for Tots coordinating agency for Collier County.

Saint Ann Catholic School welcomes and inspires children in Pre-K3 to eighth grade. The Saint Ann School Foundation provides need-based tuition scholarships to the students of Saint Ann School. The school provides an excellent Catholic education, rooted in Gospel values, through the education of spirit, mind and body.

Trinity-by-the-Cove Women of Trinity

Since 2002, Susan G. Komen Southwest Florida has given more than $5 million in local grants within the five-county area. Seventy-five percent of the affiliate’s net fundraising proceeds stays in the local community to provide education, screening, treatment and support, and the remaining 25 percent of the net proceeds supports groundbreaking national breast cancer research programs.

Primary purpose is to raise money to be donated to charitable causes benefiting local Collier County organizations, such as Family Resource Center, Greater Naples YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, Fun Time Learning Center, Ricky King Fund, Youth Haven, Neighborhood Health Clinic, PACE Center for Girls and The Wishing Well.

The mission of Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church is to spread the Good News of the Gospel and provide a loving and compassionate environment for the continuing transformation of a life in Christ Jesus. We believe this journey is shaped by God through worship, learning, friendship and service to others. The Women of Trinity provide the parish with fellowship in multiple ways, one of which is its annual Christmas Market.

FINAL Scenes

Helping Hands Local companies working to make Southwest Florida paradise By Kat Smith

1

From baking and boxing little confections to digging in the dirt and packaging nutritious meals, the pitch-in efforts of business members in this community are wide-ranging. Generous financial donations abound, and we find plenty of hands-on action. We captured a few scenes showing how some of these businesses help make the Naples area great.

2

The Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa, in addition to funding several community events and scholarships, also has a Spirit to Serve initiative through which employees volunteer. One example: packing 4,000 meals for the hungry in Southwest Florida. The Spirit to Serve committee also raised money for the Harry Chapin Food Bank through bake and thrift sales, a prize drawing and more.

Norman Love Confections’ staff make and donate sweet treats to countless charity events annually, such as 300 individually boxed macarons for the Humane Society Naples tea, while Love and his wife, Mary, actively participate in several events. The couple chaired the Three Wishes gala, which benefited the Golisano Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Florida.

BMO Private Bank and BMO Harris Bank employees, as part of BMO Financial Group’s company-wide Volunteer Day, helped care for existing plants and prepare others for the new gardens in the Naples Botanical Garden.

William C. Huff Companies supplied warehouse space and people power to store and distribute 140 mattresses provided by Tempur-Pedic North America for Foster Children of Southwest Florida. Thanks to these efforts, many kids now sleep more soundly. It’s likely that those who committed these and other acts of kindness are sleeping better as well.

4

A. Vernon Allen Builder Inc. assembled a team of sponsor businesses to design and build a dream playhouse for the auction at the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples’ Night at the Museum. The custom mini dwelling, which echoes the museum’s own outdoor playhouse, brought a bid of $15,000 to support C’mon.
