Guest Speaker Dr. Frank M. Yamada Frank M. Yamada began as executive director of the Association of Theological Schools in July 2017. He oversees the work of both the Association and the Commission on Accrediting. Prior to ATS, he joined the faculty of McCormick Theological Seminary in 2008 as associate professor of Hebrew Bible and director of the Center for Asian American Ministries. In 2011, he was elected as McCormick’s 10th president — the first Asian American to lead a Presbyterian Church (USA) seminary. His tenure there was marked by increasing diversity in McCormick’s student body and creative engagement with the shifting realities of theological education. Yamada previously taught Hebrew Bible/Old Testament for nine years at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. An active biblical scholar, Yamada has authored and edited books and articles on cross-cultural and feminist hermeneutics. He is a member of the Society of Biblical

6

Literature, where he has served as a chair and as a steering committee member of the Asian American Biblical Hermeneutics Group, the Feminist Hermeneutics of the Bible Section and the Committee for Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession. In addition, he was a member of the Ethnic Chinese Biblical Colloquium and the American Academy of Religion, and he was the co-chair for the managing board of the Asian Pacific Americans and Religion Research Initiative annual conference. A graduate of Southern California College, Yamada earned his Master of Divinity and doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has written and spoken on the future of the church and theological education.

Guest Speaker Congressman Brian Mast Congressman Brian Mast is in his second term representing the 18th Congressional District of Florida. Prior to his election to Congress, Mast followed in his father’s footsteps by serving in the U.S. Army for more than 12 years, earning honors including the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal for Valor, the Purple Heart Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. While deployed in Afghanistan, he worked as a bomb disposal expert under the elite Joint Special Operations Command. The last improvised explosive device that he found resulted in catastrophic injuries, which included the loss of both of his legs. Mast remained on active duty following his injuries and provided expertise to the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms during his recovery process. After his retirement from the Army, he continued working in counter-

terrorism and national defense as an explosive specialist with the Department of Homeland Security. Mast subsequently received a degree from Harvard University and volunteered to serve alongside the Israel Defense Forces. In Congress, Mast strives to serve as he did on the battlefield: without regard for personal gain or personal sacrifice. He is a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where his priorities include fixing the pressing water quality issues stemming from Lake Okeechobee, and the Foreign Affairs Committee, where he uses his military expertise to help strengthen the safety and security of the United States. Mast lives in Palm City, Florida, with his wife, Brianna, and four children: Magnum, Maverick, Madalyn and Major.

Guiding Principles Palm Beach Atlantic University is a comprehensive Christian university with a core emphasis in the liberal arts. Its purpose is to offer a curriculum of studies and a program of student activities dedicated to the development of moral character, the enrichment of spiritual lives and the perpetuation of growth in Christian ideals. Founded under the providence of God with the conviction that there is a need for a university in this community that will expand the minds, develop the moral character, and enrich the spiritual lives of all the people who may come within the orbit of its influence, Palm Beach Atlantic University shall stand as a witness for Jesus Christ, expressed directly through its administration, faculty and students. To assure the perpetuation of these basic concepts of its founders, it is resolved that all those who become associated with Palm Beach Atlantic as trustees, officer, or members of the faculty or of the staff, must believe in the divine inspiration of the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments; that man was directly created by God; that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin; that He is the Son of God, our Lord and Savior; that He died for the sins of all men and thereafter arose from the grave; that by repentance and the acceptance of and belief in him, by the grace of God, the individual is saved from eternal damnation and receives eternal life in the presence of God; and it is further resolved that the ultimate teachings in the University shall always be consistent with these principles. (These principles were adopted by the University’s founders and serve as the preamble to the PBA bylaws.)

Purpose Palm Beach Atlantic University is a Christian university that equips students to lead fulfilling lives through learning, leadership and service.

Vision The vision for Palm Beach Atlantic University is to be a premier Christian university, whose graduates are intellectually prepared, possess high moral character, demonstrate outstanding citizenship, and are servant leaders in their communities, the nation and the world.

Mission The mission of Palm Beach Atlantic University is to prepare students for lifelong learning and leadership by offering excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study in Arts, Humanities, Sciences and selected professions. Palm Beach Atlantic University is a private, independent university dedicated to the intentional integration of Christian principles. As a community of learners, the university provides students with a rigorous educational environment that leads to intellectual, spiritual and personal character development.

Values Accountability – We will be accountable for our words and deeds to one another and to God. Excellence – We will do everything with excellence, as unto our Lord Jesus Christ. Integrity – We will be honest, open, and truthful in all our relationships. Love – We will demonstrate love through our attitudes and selfless service to one another. Respect – We will honor the worth of every individual by recognizing that each of us has a right to be heard and that each contributes significantly to our community of learners. Unity – We will demonstrate to the world that we are a unified body of Christian believers in all we do.

Elaboration Committed to the discovery, preservation, and application of knowledge, the University, through its undergraduate and graduate curricula, seeks to generate broad exposure to and experience in the arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, human resource development and selected professions. The University esteems quality and currency in learning by encouraging faculty to conduct appropriate and meaningful professional activities and to utilize such experience to enhance student advisement and relevant classroom instruction. Recognizing that human intelligence is more useful when animated by divine wisdom, the University seeks to complement its academic purpose with an emphasis on the spiritual, physical and social development of its students. Accordingly, the University promotes a range of programs, services and activities designed to impart a vision of the worldwide Christian community, a call to ministry within that community, and a sense of responsibility to equip ourselves and others for effective service in a multicultural environment. Believing also that freedom is an essential adjunct to the pursuit of spiritual and intellectual truth, the University encourages knowledge and understanding of democracy and the American heritage of private free enterprise. Aspiring ultimately to prepare its students for service in a world of diverse cultures, the University strives to model the community of faith by recognizing the intrinsic value of all persons as created by God.

The PBA Mace

The University’s mace, designed by Dr. Fred Burkett, retired Professor of Art, is the symbol of the University’s institutional personality and authority. It is carried by the Faculty Grand Marshal, PBA’s recipient of the Charles and Hazel Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching for the previous year, in procession at all ceremonial functions of the University, such as degree-granting ceremonies or other formal convocations. Placing the mace on its stand is a signal that the proceedings are about to come to order. Its retirement indicates that the exercises are concluded. Symbols special to the University are evident throughout the length of the almost four-foot mace; a series of ichthys symbols; the open Bible and cross; the lamp of knowledge; and the University’s landmark auditorium building. Isaiah 43:19, “Watch for the new thing that I am going to do; it is happening already; you can see it now,” is inscribed around the foot of the crown. Rows of carved palm fronds cascade from a supportive foundation of marble. Red and white alternating porcelain stripes encircle the mace. A cerulean blue bank, sprinkled with stars representing the 50 states of the Union, points up the free enterprise convictions of the University. The longest part of the mace’s shaft is carved in the style of a Greek column; gold ormolu has been rubbed into this textured representation of wisdom and knowledge.

The Academic Regalia

Academic regalia includes the robes, caps, insignia and emblems that colleges and universities use to identify themselves. The custom began in Great Britain where the earliest academic dress was simply the costume of the times. Eventually, academic dress became a specialized costume, which was standardized in the United States in 1895 with the Academic Costume Code. The code specifies styling and usage of caps, gowns and hoods. Garments are generally black and may be assorted with colors representing a particular degree or institution. The degree, or faculty, colors are used for edgings, facings, chevrons and tassels; they indicate the category of degree rather than the scholar’s major subject.

The Cap

American universities usually use a square mortarboard cap, while graduates of British institutions often wear a soft velvet hat. Each features a tassel that attaches to a button in the center and hangs down beside the face.

The Hood

The hood represents the wearer’s degrees and institutions. They are in three lengths: 3, 3.5, and 4 feet for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral, respectively. They are bordered by the wearer’s faculty colors in widths of 2, 3, and 5 inches for the respective degrees. The color of the lining identifies the institution.

The Gown

The style of the gown indicates the level of degree: bachelor’s gowns are severe, unornamented robes with long, pointed sleeves; master’s gowns are wider and more elaborate; and doctoral gowns may be velvet instead of cotton and may feature velvet bars on each sleeve and panels of color on the front.

Regalia Accessories

Gold cords are awarded to bachelor’s degree recipients who graduate summa cum laude; silver cords for magna cum laude and bronze cords for cum laude. Hoods are worn by students who graduate at the doctoral and master’s levels. Academic honor societies provide distinctive cords for their graduates. Blue and white cords are worn by presidential ambassadors. Red, white and blue cords indicate active military or veteran graduates. International students may wear sashes representing their country’s flag.

The Gonfalons

The disciplines housed in each of the schools, campuses and library are symbolized by the colors of the individual gonfalons (banners) that are carried to mark the entrance of the faculty and the graduates. The colors were selected by the faculties to portray the academic interests characteristic of their programs of study. The Legacy of the Stole of Gratitude

Graduates wearing a white stole with the University seal are demonstrating appreciation for a person who helped turn the dream of a college education into a reality today. The Stole of Gratitude is worn during the Commencement ceremony. After the ceremony, the new graduate presents the Stole to someone who provided extraordinary help or support, i.e., parents, relatives or mentors who have helped with wisdom, words of support, or with financial assistance.

University Theme: 2019-2020

This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” ~Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)

American Free Enterprise

Palm Beach Atlantic University confidently affirms the values and institutions that historically have informed American society— religious liberty; traditional Judeo-Christian morality; limited, constitutional government; the Rule of Law; personal and political accountability; and capitalism—the system of free enterprise. We believe that America is truly an exceptional nation, which was founded and has flourished under the guiding providential hand of God. We aim to develop in each of our students an appreciation for the unique American achievement in its many dimensions— social, political, economic, moral, legal, and religious. Our general education curriculum, required of all students, includes a course entitled “Freedom in American Society,” which examines the meaning and significance of freedom in the American experience. Students explore such topics as the historical roots of American liberty, with special emphasis on the close link between liberty and Christianity, and the nature of freedom as understood by the chief architects of the American political order. They examine the interdependence between political and economic freedom, in particular, the significance of free-enterprise capitalism for the preservation of liberty. They learn about the structure of American constitutional democracy and the traditional meaning of justice and the Rule of Law. These studies help students recognize the various threats to individual freedom, religious liberty, and other traditional American rights and values that have emerged over the past several centuries, as well as contemporary challenges to their preservation. Cicero remarked of the declining Republic of his era: “Our age . . . inherited the Republic like some beautiful painting of bygone days, its colors already fading through great age; and not only has our time neglected to freshen the colors of the picture, but we have failed to preserve its form and outlines.” Palm Beach Atlantic University strives to ensure that a similar fate does not befall the noble American experiment in ordered liberty. We regard the transmission of the American cultural heritage to the rising generation as not only a profound joy, but also a profound duty.
