Summer music brought neighbors to the Priory Chapel, summer classes brought some bright youngsters to the classrooms, and a long-standing summer camp program kept even more children entertained on the Priory grounds. In addition, a book fund will honor an old friend, Leonard Koppett. Training has the entire adult community ready to give first aid assistance, and golf provided another kind of aid to the scholarship fund. This and more in Summer and Fall at A Glance, pages 4-5. Why does Father Pius, who perfected his English in the United States, speak with a Hungarian accent? But they saw a school on the move and quickly became a part of that moving force themselves. With an $8.5 million operating budget and progress towards a capital campaign goal of $15.9 million, the Priory had a robust year in 2002-3. Auction income of almost $354,000 topped the previous year’s by $9,000. The Annual Fund was also up. In challenging economic times, the Priory is especially grateful to parents who are choosing to send their children to this school and to the long list of contributors who continue to support it. Pages 12-27.

From the Headmaster Dear Priory Community, I find myself in a familiar situation at the beginning of this school year. I am trying to put all the faces with the names, and the task is even a bit harder than usual because we just welcomed the biggest student body in our history. Nonetheless, I intend to be able to say hello, ask how classes are going and offer some moral support to each and every student. This part of Benedictine hospitality is very important at the Priory because it is a place “where everyone knows your name.” We reinforced that thought at our first Mass when we sang “All Are Welcome” as the opening song. We want our students to feel comfortable, known and loved, so that they can achieve to their utmost potential and focus on their primary task of learning in and outside the classroom. Now, for some exciting news: The decision has been made and approved by the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors (monks from WPS and St. Anselm), for the implementation of coeducational boarding starting in the fall of 2004 or 2005. We are very excited about this decision and are planning and organizing the specific tasks necessary to make it happen. Our revised Conditional Use Permit and Master Plan is being submitted to the town of Portola Valley. The revisions and facility improvements reflect years of studies and are necessary for us to remain a competitive college prep school and a school of choice on the Peninsula. If you haven’t seen the threedimensional model Master Plan, please drop by Founders Hall—it’s in the lobby. The additions to our curriculum this year are enough to make a person want to quit work and go to classes! They are AP Music Theory, Musical Theater, Differential Equations (our second post-BC Calculus math class), AP Comparative Government and Politics, Cultural Anthropology, China and the World, Shakespeare, and Modern Drama. Dr. Judith Browning will be taking the seniors in her class to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival this fall, and several equally
enticing field trips are in the works. Our community service program was revised a bit, and several new options are listed in the “G and H Block” activities period (as happens every fall). I will be travelling to Asia in late October to meet and visit with our current parents, alum parents, alumni and friends. This will be my first trip to the Pacific Rim countries, and I’m looking forward to it immensely. Last year, Father Martin and Al Zappelli, Director of Admissions, established parent and alumni representatives in five Asian cities. We all look forward to seeing the growth in this new network and renewing those friendships this fall. In mid September we had occasion to honor Father Pius on the anniversary of his 50th year as a priest. Over 135 people attended a dinner in his honor—among them, Abbot Matthew from Saint Anselm Abbey in Manchester New Hampshire, superior of the monastic communities at both schools. Abbot Matthew’s relationship with Father Pius is a long one, going back to the days when Matthew was a young novice here and Father Pius one of the monks who guided his training. Over the summer the Priory community mourned the loss of Marilyn Spears who worked in our Business Office. Her genuine concern for everyone that she served and her welcoming smile are missed. Our prayers were also extended to the family of Susan Ruiz, who died in early August. She is the mother of three Priory alums: Mark, Kathy and Michael. We also note with sadness the passing of Leonard Koppett, husband of our English faculty member, Suzanne. A nationally known sportswriter, he was unfailingly generous in giving time to our students, individually and in classes. We start the year full of great hopes, dreams and visions, thanks to the terrific support we receive from each of the members of the Priory community. We all can be very proud of this school on Portola Road. Sincerely,

Summer/Fall Even the perfect harmony of the St. John’s Boys Choir couldn’t keep awake the little tyke on Grandma’s lap. Some 75 community residents came to the Priory Chapel for a delightful evening of music. The choir’s 35 young members are based at St. John’s Abbey in Minnesota, and they were hosted in the Priory’s Residence Halls for a few days during a June concert tour that took them from San Diego to Portland, Oregon.
The weather as well as the burger stand staffed by stalwart volunteer fathers were both sizzling at the annual Family Barbecue, held on the playing fields and under the shade of a huge open canopy on Sept. 21. Nevertheless, the entire school community enjoyed games and activities, great food and outstanding karaoke. National Honor Society and Model United Nations washed cars for a good cause—proceeds are shared between the clubs and charity.

at a Glance
The 37 smiling faces on the Summer Bridge Program bus brightened the Priory halls for several weeks during June and July. These highly motivated eighth graders from Kennedy and McKinley schools in Redwood City worked with Priory faculty, students and alumni in courses designed to prepare them for Algebra 1 this fall—and their success rate was even higher than expected. Children from local and faraway communities had a more traditional summer camp experience with Camp Unique, an independent program which is housed on Priory grounds.
Leonard Koppett was well known as the fellow whose nationally syndicated column won him a place in the Sportswriters Hall of Fame. He also was a devotee of art, music, literature and history, and he could match anybody with his knowledge of subject. What better way to honor him than with books? Mr. Koppett died on June 22, and Woodside Priory School will use contributions in his name to add books to the library. He is the husband of WPS English faculty member Suzanne Koppett. Father Maurus led the way in learning to resuscitate a plastic dummy during an eight-hour emergency first aid training course. Everyone on the faculty and staff was certified as a part of back-to-school preparation in August. Some 125 alumni, parents, faculty and students spent a pleasant afternoon on the Los Altos Golf and Country Club links, and the equally pleasant side effect was the $30,000 raised for Priory athletics.

Everyone Celebrates Father Pius’s
Golden Anniversary On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination as a Benedictine priest, Woodside Priory School and a wide community of friends honors a beloved, quiet, amusing and amazing man.

Father Pius Horvath tells of a seventh-grader he once caught doodling in class.“I didn’t want to be harsh,” he says. So instead of lecturing her about paying attention, Father Pius merely commented,“It seems we have an artist in class.”The student looked up and, instead of apologizing, said,“Oh, thank you!” Father Pius still chuckles at the student’s spunk. It helps explain why, at 73, having recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest, the Benedictine monk continues to teach at Woodside Priory after most of his peers have retired. He loves the children. According to Andy Schilling, a Priory trustee and alumnus, it wasn’t easy to put one over on Father Pius. In the late 1970s, when Schilling studied German under Father Pius, he and his fellow students decided that the language lab, with its individual dividers, was a perfect place to slip notes back and forth and even quietly talk to each other.“Once Father Pius discovered this, he developed an amazing ability to move quickly and silently through the rows.” Where other teachers might be daunted by such student shenanigans, Father Pius appreciates their liveliness.“If I had to miss (being with) the kids, that would be a great vacuum in my life,” he says. Father Pius was never daunted by modern technology, either—in fact, he was among the first on the Priory campus to see the computer’s potential for reaching across generations and geographic boundaries. Early on, he learned several computer programs and was one of the first to create his own Web page. He still goes online daily to search for news and to communicate with friends and associates here and abroad, says Rebecca Harper, Director of Technology. Father Pius’s life began a world away, in a Hungarian section of Slovakia. He was one of two children born less than a year apart to a blacksmith and his wife. When Father Pius was still a youth, he settled on a career as a monk and teacher. His parents had discouraged him from following in his father’s footsteps. “My father said to my mother, ‘That kid is not good’.” His father was talking about his ability with the smithing tools. But he could have been commenting on his son’s occasional misbehavior. Father Pius reports that he knew a little something about acting up. “I did things like crossing the Danube River on a borrowed boat.” In winter, when the river froze
over, Father Pius would walk across it to see his grandmother in Hungary. It was dangerous not only because the ice could begin melting before his return trip but also because he risked being caught by border guards. He wasn’t caught, and as a young man in 1948, he entered the novitiate of the Benedictines at Archabbey of Pannonhalma, Hungary. Risk would be a part of his life again. As a young priest, he crossed illegally into Austria in 1956 en route to Switzerland, where he helped minister to the Hungarian Catholic refugees. He accepted a scholarship at the Suisse University of Fribourg, studying German, French, literature and medieval history. Years later, when he was living in the United States, he ran into peril on a visit to his parents in Czechoslovakia. It was Aug. 20,1968—the date is burned in Father Pius’ memory—and the Russians occupied the country, stranding Father Pius there. Later he left for church and saw what must have been graffiti meant for the occupying soldiers in the street: “Go home!” But Father Pius saw it as a message for himself. “I took it to heart for myself, how happy I would be to go home to California.” He made it to the Austrian border and, with the help of Slovakian border guards, crossed into Austria.“A great burden left my heart,” he said. Father Pius never intended to focus on languages. He enjoyed learning them but did not have faith that he would master them enough to teach. So he planned to major in chemistry in Fribourg. His abbot had other plans.“Since you are abroad, you should study languages,” came the order. And Father Pius did. He eventually became fluent in German, French, Latin and English. But when he was called to join his Benedictine brothers at the new Woodside Priory in 1960, Father Pius was comfortable speaking only German and French. He enrolled in graduate school at Stanford University to continue his language studies and for the first term took courses taught in German and French while he worked on his own to learn English from talking to his fellow Priory monks. It wasn’t the best method, Father Pius says, because he acquired their Hungarian accent along with his English. (Continued on page 8)

“One of the notable things about Father Pius is that I don’t believe that he has changed at all in the 25 years since I had him as a teacher. He looked exactly the same then and had the same twinkle in his eye, quiet humor and soft voice. “Then, as now, I enjoyed seeing Father Pius around the campus because he is always a cheerful and peaceful presence and has a friendly word for all who stop and speak with him.“ Andy Schilling, trustee and alumnus, class of 1978

(Continued from page 7) But Father Pius persevered. A parishioner congratulated him after his first attempt at preaching in English. A year later, the parishioner congratulated him again.“Father,” he said,“you have improved. I can almost understand you now.” Father Pius chuckles at the memory Years later, Father Pius is perfectly understandable as he returns to his favorite subject: the children. He attends the students’ dramatic productions and many of their athletic events.“This is a happy place,” he says. He recalls a recent news item of an exconvict speaking to elementary school children of his ordeal. A child asked him what he missed most when he was in prison, and he said it was the sounds of children. “It touched me very deeply,” Father. Pius says. He, too, couldn’t imagine life without children.“That is why I keep teaching.” —Gwynne Young
Father Pius Scholarship Fund Is Growing The Priory community celebrated Father Pius’s Golden Anniversary with a gala reception and dinner, attended by more than 135 people on Saturday, Sept. 6. He was honored again at a special mass and brunch on Sept. 7. Students commemorated the event at morning Chapel. On the actual date, June 21, he was in Hungary with family and friends. Perhaps the most fitting honor is the faculty and staff’s dedication of all of their 2003-04 annual fund contributions to a scholarship fund bearing his name. What could better honor a man who says he can’t imagine his life without children in it? Letter from the Board of Trustees Chair The 2002/2003 School Year was the 10th year of my association with the Priory, beginning when my daughter, Amanda, entered the first Sixth Grade class in the fall of 1993. And what a 10 years it has been! Cindy and I knew when we came that this school was on the move, but the progress has far outpaced our expectations. From a student body of 250 we are now over 330. In 1993 we had about two applicants for each spot; now we have five. We have seen the faculty and staff grow both in size and ability. And we know that when we have to say good-bye to one of our valued colleagues, we can do so with confidence that we can attract and retain top quality individuals to continue the work. This past year yielded some significant milestones. The completion of the Maas Family Commons on-campus housing was an important triumph in fostering our on-campus community. In addition, it illustrated the good relationship that the school has established with the Town of Portola Valley. The Annual Fund and the Auction continued to prosper at the same time that our community was generously supporting the Golden Jubilee Capital Campaign. In the face of continued economic weakness we have been deeply gratified by the rate at which our donors have made pledges and made payments on those pledges. The Board of Directors’ ratification of the Trustees’ recommendation to go to co-educational boarding is additional evidence of the growing strength and maturity of the school. The year also marked the end of my two terms as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. I am honored to have been in the company of Father Pius, Bob Ward, and Donna Wengert-Neff, who were in the same class and “graduated” with me. It has been a humbling experience, as well as one of great satisfaction, to work with the individuals serving as trustees. They represent a healthy blend of parents, alumni, longtime friends, and outside individuals, all of whom share a deep commitment to the mission, values, and unique character of the Priory. They bring a wide variety of experiences in areas including finance, school administration from middle school to college level, investment, fund raising, real estate, construction, law; and this list goes on. Click on “Leaders.” As I step down as Chair after three years, I am delighted that Ray Rothrock has stepped up to carry the mission forward. Ray has served on the finance, investment and development committees, and is chair of our Golden Jubilee Campaign’s Performing Arts Center committee. His son, Nathaniel, is in Seventh Grade, and this year he is hosting a foreign student, Lenka Vankova, at his and Meredith’s home. Lenka is spending her senior year at the Priory. Flight of the Eye: the photographic journey A 61-piece exhibit of the photographic work of two Benedictine monks—Father Martin of Woodside Priory and Brother Paul Diveny of St. Mary’s Abbey and the Delbarton School, Morristown, New Jersey, opened at St Anselm College’s Chapel Art Center on Sept. 18 for a four-week showing. Special events will include a musical evening, a special tour and lecture session, and Father Martin’s meeting with St. Anselm art students. The writing below is Father Martin’s personal statement about his art, and it speaks also to the nature of the St.Anselm exhibit. These photos are from the exhibit and his personal collection. —C. I
n much of the iconography of monastics, the monk is portrayed as having both head and eyes cast downward in a pose of reflection and humility. Indeed, the monk is warned during monastic training to keep careful custody of the eyes lest distractions draw away from heavenly thoughts. But it is equally fair to say that the eye which is trained to see the image of God in the beauty of creation and the handiwork of men and women may lead the viewer to a closer relationship with the One Who is the Creator. Thus the eye may fall upon an ancient headstone in a forgotten cemetery, a gnarled face, a broken window, and fly to the source of the stories they imply. In my course I teach high school juniors and seniors to be visual story tellers, to see the story in a situation and to compose photographs which will move the viewer to reflect, imagining the unseen details of the story. It is my hope that these few images may be a source of enjoyment for you, the viewer, and perhaps one or more may suggest a story or set a mood which will touch you in some good way. May your eye take flight. Father Martin, O.S.B.

Mission One can’t be in the Priory community long without encountering the mission statement—directly or indirectly. It is printed in the literature, handed out on wallet-sized cards to students and parents, and it forms the foundation of Chapel programs and individual department goals. It is often the starting point for campus committees large and small—for example, it was the basis of evaluation used in the current strategic plan. For this Annual Report, Sophomores Chase Haegele and Michael Mellenthin talked to several faculty and students on the campus, asking them to reflect on a way that each of the five values impacts campus life. Update Maas Family Commons See the story on the back cover. The $3 million, 10-residence housing goal was completed on time. Performing Arts Center Miller/Kelley Architects has been retained to design the $7 million PAC. Almost $4 million of the $7 million needed has been pledged. The target for raising the remainder is December 31st, with an assessment of PAC fundraising scheduled for early 2004. Endowment Nearly $1.2 million has already been committed towards the Campaign endowment goal of $5 million, even though the focus thus far has been on capital projects. Attention to endowment will increase in 2004.

Hot weather didn’t wilt the high spirits of the Priory community and guests from Portola Valley township on hand to watch Father Egon, one of the founding monks of the school, bless the seven units of the Maas Family Commons (B) Father Pius took a few minutes to tell the story of “Mama Gambetta,” an Italian immigrant who made fast friends with the monks over the years and when she died
bequeathed the land upon which the housing stands. Behind him are Headmaster Tim Molak, Campaign Leadership Team Chair Wayne Davison, and Father Egon. (C) The housing units marked completion of a cooperative enterprise between the Priory and the Portola Valley town leadership, and Mayor Ted Driscoll shared congratulations with the gathering . (D) Names of donors large and small are on the welcome sign at A the edge of the complex, inspected here by Doug Sargent, wife Kelly and daughters, Kiana and Samantha—who was searching the list for her favorite letter, “S.” The Sargents are among the faculty and staff who moved into the townhouse-style residences over the summer.
