Hope and Gratitude

As I look back on my first year at Priory, there are many graces and blessings: amazing students, dedicated faculty and staff, supportive parents, enthusiastic alums, and our Benedictine values. In addition, three gifts I also discovered during the pandemic at Priory were gratitude, hope, and compassion. Each of these is both a gift and a practice that helped me navigate the year. St. Benedict considered gratitude as one of the most important attitudes and virtues for a person. Gratitude moves a person from being entitled to being blessed and calls us to remember the graces and benefits we have received. I am grateful to be part of this extraordinary community of students, faculty and staff, monks, parents, and alums where generosity, joy, and humility are part of everyday life and I look forward to this next chapter in our history with excitement! The second gift is hope. Hope is the fertilizer of life. We are called to be people of ceaseless hope, which is more important now than ever. Everything we do should be an act of hope–that means we should be people of the present, and live in this moment and see the good and potential in each person. Every moment, even with all the imperfection and frustration, is full of possibilities. Each moment is full of greatness for the future, and each moment is full of love. One of my challenges last year was not to allow the coronavirus to narrow my vision or paralyze my hope. I worked to focus on the people and actions that stirred hope within me. I thought about all the women and men who put their lives at risk medically to help those suffering from the virus. I thought about our faculty and staff who helped our students learn and grow every day, and I thought about the people that reached out to the elderly and those that were isolated to see if they needed help or support in any way. These people filled me with hope! The third gift I experienced during this pandemic is compassion. Compassion asks us to go where it is uncomfortable and to enter into the places that may be challenging. Compassion challenges us to authentically accompany those who might be lonely, weak, vulnerable, or powerless. As we experience the challenges around us, we remember that it is a time for greatness, not for greed. It is a time for idealism, not for ideology. It is a time for compassionate actions, not just compassionate words. It is time for love, and love is shown better in deeds rather than words. These past 15 months have allowed me to think about how I can be more grateful, more hopeful, and more compassionate. I am excited about this new academic year, a fresh start, and more opportunities to be grateful, hopeful, and compassionate. The 2020-2021 Annual Report reflects the gifts of so many wonderful people who support Woodside Priory and our mission to educate and form students who take intellectual and creative risks, to discover their passions, to share their gifts with others, and to grow in heart, mind, and soul. Thank you for all your support, the good work that has been done in the past, and the good work we will do together. Always We Begin Again.

6 MS GRADUATION

Class of 2025

The warm Portola Valley sun streamed across the 38 graduates as they sat excitedly next to one another on the Fr. Christopher Field. Their larger than life images streamed across the huge jumbotron screen that hung over the stage. Interim Head of Upper School Micah Morris welcomed the mass with a look at the past and the future. “Welcome to your destiny,” he said as he addressed the onlooking 8th grade class. “You are the authors of your destiny, part of which ends, and another part of which begins tonight.”

S

erving as the middle school community service commissioner and the first student speaker, Sophie Chen ‘25 delivered a powerful speech full of realities, values, growth, and opportunities. “As grateful as I am for being vaccinated, I’ve also realized that there is no vaccine in this world that can fix social injustice,” Sophie expressed. “There is no vaccine for racial inequality. There is no vaccine for the violence against Asians. There is no vaccine for homelessness.” Sophie did offer a glimpse of hope for the class, “As we begin our new journey, we don’t need to dwell on COVID. Instead each of us has an opportunity to help address the problems the vaccine can’t fix.” Student speaker Simon Hirsch ’25 followed Sophie with personal stories about how the five Benedictine values of Community, Integrity, Spirituality, Individuality, and Hospitality have impacted him. “My experience at Priory was shaped by many things, the Benedictine values served as a daily guide for learning and living,” expressed Simon. In closing he said, “ We are prepared to be ambassadors of these five values as we go forth in the world.” As student selected speaker Paul Trudelle approached the podium with a prop in hand, the 8th grade audience lit up with excitement as they peered to see what the prop was. The prop was a red umbrella in which Paul famously used for one of his “CHEM-urcials” as well as a symbol throughout his speech. “Did you know, oh students,

that I battled with some major self-confidence issues back then,” he said. Paul shared the ups and downs of his middle and high school athletic adventures. Paul explained, “ I erroneously believed that my self-worth lay in how I performed and I looked in front of others, rather than simply appreciating & accepting who I was.” After deciding to go out of his comfort zone and move forward he discovered a positive experience and teachable moment from many of the teams he participated in. “In 7th grade, I tried out for my first sport… school baseball…and got cut…and survived just like Halley’s comet,” Paul explained. Now even more determined, in high school Paul found his sport, “I went out for track and cross country and did NOT get CUT- YES! This led to a life-long distance running passion that my wife, 6 kids & 3 grandkids share today.” In closing, the two take-aways he offered the graduates were, “I slowly learned not to take things quite so seriously and laugh at myself when I made mistakes and I learned I could fail at new things and still survive intact and even have fun doing so.” Middle School Head Caitha Ambler closed out the momentous event with words of thanks–thankful for the support, kindness, patience, and grace of the Priory community. Caitha closed with a final reminder, “Keep that energy, resilience, engagement, compassion with you as you venture in upper school. Be kind, Be Engaged, Be YOU. And continue to share your light and joy with others...because it is real.”

US ATHLETICS

2020-2021 US Athletics in Review In February, things were very uncertain as to whether we would even have an interscholastic season. By the end of the month, schedules were made and momentum shifted toward actually having some type of season for every sport. By March, fifteen teams assembled and on March 4th we hosted our first high school cross country meet against Menlo school. The meet ended in a victory for the girls, and began what was to become an epic spring. Up to 8 games in one day, and 67 games played in the month of May, it was truly a season to remember with 200 athletes participating in a 3-month season. This truly is an amazing community! Shortly before their tenyear reunion, Kimberly Carlisle ‘11 and Cary Hampton ‘11 began working with the Alumni Association to establish a memorial fund for Lizzie Somers ‘11. Just ten weeks later, we had surpassed our goal of $8,000 to make this a reality! Through the generosity of nearly 50 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and monks, construction of Lizzie’s memorial is already underway and will be completed within the coming months. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of the memorial. Ultimately, the Priory-style grandstand area will include bleachers, so fans have a comfortable place to cheer on the team, and a pavilion to cover the bleachers and protect the fans from the sun and heat. Landscaping is already underway, and the memorial plaque will be established before our alumni Homecoming event on October 23rd. Those who still wish to contribute to Lizzie’s Memorial Fund are still very welcome to do so! Through your generosity, Lizzie’s memory will live on through future generations of Priory students. Her presence on the tennis courts will truly be felt by players, families, faculty, and friends. A Lifetime of Honors to the

T

he proud feeling of “We Did It!” was palpable at the 61st graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021. As the graduating class joyfully marched down the hill behind the familiar sound of bagpipes, a hush fell over the awaiting crowd as though they wanted to soak in every aspect of this special moment. As the graduates approached the Fr. Christopher Field, several of them gave a “thumbs up”, or a peace sign to the awaiting cameras as their excitement grew. Patrick Ruff offered the class one piece of important advice, “cherish and protect what you’ve learned, what you love, and who you’ve become. That is it…” The graduates nodded their heads in agreement as they absorbed and appreciated his wise words. He left them with one additional reminder, “remember that you are the author of your own life...so be thoughtful, be humble, and be true to your roots.” Student speaker Sam Rosen ’21 relayed an emotional play by play of a recent soccer match between Priory and the all too familiar rival Sacred Heart Prep. “My teeth were

US GRADUATION 18

clenched and I was sweating bullets. There was no time like now for someone to step up, and Matt Gee did just that. He banged in a stunning goal,” said Sam. Sam used the huge 4-2 win over Sacred Heart as a fitting analogy to the Class of 2021. “(The win) was magical, tear jerking, awe inspiring, it was all Priory stands for: Showing up when others didn’t expect us to.” Sam also expanded on learning from one another’s failures, “Remember that failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” As one of the youngest alumni to ever give the commencement address, Humphrey Yang ‘05 was able to connect with the Class of 2021 easily. He shared what technology was like during his time at Priory, “Wikipedia had not yet been created...Netflix was still a new service that would mail you a DVD...GPS was primitive–we still had to print out directions or use physical maps...and the word texting didn’t mean anything to me,”. Humphrey explained that although technology these days helps us immensely, it doesn’t help us navigate the challenges we might face in life. He offered three lessons that helped him find his way during a time when he was feeling lost. The three lessons were, “Find Your Passion”, “Give New Things an Honest Try”, and “Tap Into Your Friends and Family”. Through these lessons he was able to discover his unique talent of providing financial advice on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube and accumulating over 2.5 million followers and growing. Humphrey accredited the success to his channels largely to remaining optimistic during tough times. “By seeing the world with a glass half-full view, even when things weren’t looking good for me or the world, I was paying attention to what I could do to better myself,” Humphrey said. In fact, Humphrey shared that the friends he graduated with some 16 years ago remain his lifelong friends to this day and “that lesson on optimism was taught to me by members of my Priory community.” The Class of 2021 seemed to show a new appreciation for the graduation ceremony as they each glided across the stage to receive their diplomas. Two graduates in China received their diplomas through a livestream as they happily waved with excitement on the big screen. No one was left out. Through pure determination, patience, and a flexibility for an ever-changing school year, the Class of 2021 graduated with honors– Benedictine honors.

“Cherish and protect what you’ve learned, what you love, and who you’ve become. That is it… remember that you are the author of your own life... so be thoughtful, be humble, and be true to your roots.”

LEGACY FUND 22

Beyond the Brick

An investment in Priory’s future.

It is a Priory tradition to create and install a commemorative brick for every senior whose family supports the Annual Fund. Installed in the Al Zappelli Alumni Courtyard as symbols of the building blocks Priory has provided to launch our graduates into a world in need of their gifts. Each brick is inscribed with the graduate’s name and class year - tangible evidence of the mark each student has made on the school and the students who will follow in their footsteps. Beyond the bricks, the Board of Trustees establish a Class Legacy Fund endowment in honor of each graduating class. Consider joining the Trustees by honoring your graduate with a gift to Priory’s Class Legacy Fund. The Class Legacy Fund Endowment will eventually provide the opportunity for a new generation of Panthers to reach beyond their grasp while at the same time, ensuring the long term strength and viability of Priory. Congratulations Class of 2021!

ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING 30

Worldwide Learning What happens when Priory students who are living in different countries and completely different time zones attempt to attend class in the Pacific Standard Time zone? Did we expect for the students with a 12 hour time difference to attend class from 9pm-3am? The Priory residential community faced this problem as the pandemic brought travel restrictions for dorm students all over the world. Through the quick thinking and planning of Head of School Patrick Ruff, Academic Dean Crystal Matsuoka, and Dean of Residential Life Adam Siler, an asynchronous learning plan was created. The team met with the Priory faculty to explain the various needs across the many time zones, and took note of what would be needed to make it happen. Then after meeting with each individual dorm student to determine what they needed and wanted, the asynchronous platform was rolled out. The launch was truly a group effort with technology, residential faculty, faculty, and Adam Siler all working together to ensure a smooth transition. Adam was appreciative of Crystal for supporting the faculty, “who were being asked to teach in unprecedented ways and at unprecedented times,” he said. The asynchronous schedule was built according to the dorm student schedules and the availability of the teacher. The residential life families were appreciative and understanding of the custom built schedule. Adam said, “I have heard from a number of families that they felt that our asynchronous platform permitted for meaningful interactions, meaningful learning, and meaningful growth over the year.” Students loved the small, weekly classes during the evenings with their teachers. “I think for the first time in the history of the world, students wanted more class, more feedback and more school,” commented Adam. The students also recognized and were immensely appreciative of the teachers who took time out of their evenings to hold additional classes outside of the regular school day. The asynchronous platform successfully allowed for learning and mentorship between individuals across five continents. This was greatly due to the dedication of both the faculty and the students who invested in it. “Our faculty understood how difficult it was for our kids to learn remotely, and were hugely impressed by the maturity that learning asynchronously required from our dormers,” Adam said. Adam also wanted to express, “I could not fathomably be more proud of the dormers. Their resilience despite setbacks, their conscientious spirit, and their affable attitude is as impressive as anything I have seen in my fifteen years in school.”

The closing of the Dorms this academic year, due to the pandemic, created an unprecedented opportunity to fully diagnose and evaluate conditions in the Dorm Rooms. Otherwise occupied by Priory students during the school year and Mountain Camp campers over the summer the empty rooms allowed access to plan for necessary renovations. In partnership with generous Dorm families, the Anselm and Benedict dorm rooms will be getting a facelift this summer. Renovations include:

Air Conditioning and Heat: Individual control in each room • HEPA air quality filtration system • Full spectrum recessed lighting, new switches • SMART technology for air system and lighting • Refinished ceilings + walls • Prep hallways for skylight installation • Replace current doors with 8ft doors • Sprinkler system

ALUMNI REUNION

Virtual Milestone Reunions Rarely is a community’s strength and innovation more clearly seen than during a crisis. The pandemic and consequent social restrictions required the Alumni Association to adapt its approach in keeping graduates engaged. We needed to remain consistent, relevant, and valuable. While many schools struggled to adapt their alumni programs during the onset of social distancing, Priory was quick and purposeful. In October we held seven virtual reunions in which over 100 alumni logged in from across the world to share their stories and reconnect after many years apart. Alumni who would have been unable to attend an in-person event due to distance, illness, or circumstance had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful way. We look forward to inviting all alumni back to campus for Homecoming on October 23rd, 2021.

Erhard Wegman ‘76 and Phil Bautista ‘76 enjoyed lunch together at the end of May.

CLASS NEWS & NOTES

Members from the class of ‘71 got together at James Draeger’s house to celebrate 50 years as alums!

35

Reunions are typically supplemented by raffles, gift bags, and customized wine for those who attend. The goings-on of this past year compelled us to take a different approach, and Dave Rogers ‘71 deserves the greatest of shout-outs for helping us adapt this aspect of our virtual reunions. Those who RSVP’d in advance received a gift package containing Priory wine glasses, a bottle of customized wine, and in some cases a nice set of olive oil. Dave was a huge part of the process by arranging the wine production, assembling the gift packages, and coordinating delivery for those who RSVP’d in advance. Thank you Dave!

Erhard Wegman ‘76 and family enjoy a hike around the San Francisco Bay. Mike Hines ‘86 moved his family to Georgia, where he purchased 250 acres of land just outside of Savannah. He is currently working on clearing land for a home building site, a trap and skeet range, and a 1000m rifle range.

Bela Csikesz Endowed Scholarship 50 years ago, when Priory was young and monks ran the school, Bela Csikesz graduated from Priory with Dave Rogers, Rick Taube, and other graduates of 1971. The graduates of ‘71 proved to be friends for life. They kept in touch throughout the years; visited each other and traveled to celebrate milestones in life; supported each other when life became difficult. November 2021 marks 10 years since Bela’s passing in 2011, and his classmates spoke of his memory during this year’s reunion. He was remembered for his strength of character, work ethic, and kindness -- values that personify what our Priory education stands for. The following week, Dave and Rick had a purpose. They decided to work with the Alumni Association in establishing the Bela Csikesz Endowed Scholarship Fund. This endowment would support Priory’s financial aid students in Bela’s honor in perpetuity. Each year, a deserving student would be named the Bela Csikesz Endowed Scholar for the duration of their education. It is hard to think of a more fitting way to remember their friend and to serve others in his name. The class of 1971 is the first in Priory’s history to undertake such an endeavor in support of the school and in honor of their classmate.

Raissa Marchetti-Kozlov ‘05 currently works as an Administrative Business Partner at Google, is pursuing her MA in Theatre Arts at San Francisco State University, and is the Executive Managing Director & Founder of Redwood City Players, a nonprofit that provides and support arts education programs that promote confidence, commitment, diverse ways of thinking, and lifelong learning. Noel Laporte ‘09, Kailani Prey ‘06, Emily Elliott ‘06, Johan Henkens ‘09, Emma Henkens ‘07, Natasha Hobbs ‘07, Allison Littlefield ‘07, Christine West ‘07, and Humphrey Yang ‘05 had an impromptu reunion at the Dutch Goose in May.

...and a lot of people came!

Anthony Shu ’12 has spent the last 6 months working on a charity Zine called Lunchbox Moments that feature art and writing by 25 AAPI contributors on food and cultural identity. All proceeds will go to the San Francisco Chinatown Community Development Center. Learn more at: lunchboxmoments.com/About

In 2013, Tom Alexander ‘99 purchased Fr. Martin’s grandfather clock #29 at Priory’s annual Gala. What a special moment! It’s uncommon for an alum to purchase such a key item at these events, but Tom’s love for Priory shone through. The clock remained in the monastery until July 2021, whereupon Fr. Martin and Doug Sargent moved it to Tom’s residence in Los Angeles. Thank you Tom!

Brooke Cornish ‘13 completed her Master of Education program at University of San Francisco! She will be working at Phillips Brooks as a Kindergarten Co-Teacher in the upcoming year. Congratulations Brooke!

Shout out to Manny Salas ‘17 for returning to campus and helping with the Priory Strong benefit.

Cristina Rosario Perez ‘19 goes biking with a swimate from Pace University at Castle Point.

As the graduates celebrated the advent of adulthood, Humphrey Yang ‘05 returned to Priory to deliver the commencement address, making Priory history as the youngest alum to speak at a graduation. He completed his speech with the following words:

“The friends that I sat with on graduation day on that field some 16 years ago are still my friends today, and will be my friends for life. They are impossible to replace, people that I’ve been able to turn to in troubled times, people that have given me inspiration, and whom I’ve shared so many memorable experiences with. In fact, that lesson on optimism that I just shared with you today was taught to me by members of my Priory community. It is my hope that you will stay in touch with your community here, and also forge lifelong friendships of your own. I wish you the best for your future journey and lives.”

On June 5th, 2020 the class of 2021 became the 61st graduating class of Woodside Priory. The sense of community was palpable, and their joy infectious. Chase Haegele ‘06, Humphrey Yang ‘05, Chris Benham ‘06, Scott Bader ‘06, Emily Elliott ‘06, Kailani Prey ‘06, Kendall Bell ‘06, Alexandra Swan ‘06, and former faculty Rick Riebhoff met at the Alpine Inn in July to catch up on a beautiful day.

ANNUAL FUND 40

Reflections on Giving Taking time to reflect on the past informs our future. This publication combines Priorities’ graduation edition with Priory’s Annual Report providing a snapshot of the past academic and fiscal year. With consistent challenges, competing needs, and interests this school year was unlike any other in the 63-year history of Woodside Priory School. Guided by our mission and holding fast to our values the Priory community came together with creative ingenuity, compassion and generosity in support of the school and our students. We are so appreciative of our families, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the Monks whose exceptional demonstration of resilience carried us through this unprecedented year with humble excellence. It is with immense gratitude and thanksgiving that we recognize the families, individuals, companies, and foundations that supported Woodside Priory School during the 2020-2021 fiscal year on the pages of this publication. Through our philanthropy and dedicated investment in the school we continue to fulfill our mission of educating students in the Benedictine tradition today and into the future.

FOUNDERS CLUB

Founders Club Members 2020-2021 Leadership gifts from Founders Club members are the bedrock of the Annual Fund representing over 75% of all gifts that ensure financial stability as well as the cultural and economic diversity of our community. Founders Club gifts go well beyond the per-student gap. With a 14% increase in overall giving and a 9% increase in membership, Founders Club member support, in a year of uncertainty is heartening. Along with the intrinsic support, these gifts provided the resources to entertain new opportunities and address the unexpected challenges over the course of the 2020-2021academic year. ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Fund The most important, valuable, and tangible way to demonstrate support for Priory is through a gift to the Annual Fund. These essential, unrestricted gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Priory education directly supporting every Priory student every day. The majority of which includes salaries and benefits for our inspired faculty and staff. Our community is small by design, so every gift is important. Every gift makes a difference. Priory’s vibrant culture of philanthropy is evidenced by Annual Fund support. During the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the Annual Fund reached a record $2.65M in funds raised. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who gave and made achieving this ambitious goal possible. Thank you! Benedictine Associates $5,000 +

In addition to a gift to the Annual Fund, we are grateful each year to all the parents who give their time, energy, and talents to the school community by volunteering. Student Giving - Charles Huang ‘24 In the midst of an extremely unusual fall term, there was an unprecedented moment for the school when new student, 9th grade Charles Huang ‘24 decided to give $200 of his own money to support the Priory Annual Fund. We are so grateful that Charles decided to show such individuality and a strong sense of community by making this gift - some of the funds even came from winnings at chess competitions! He expressed how he wanted, in addition to his parents, to amplify their generosity by making his own gift. During a challenging year, Charles’ gift was a true inspiration and we are so grateful he and his family are a part of the Priory community.

SUSTAINING DONORS 64

Sustaining Donors The act of giving is meaningful and impactful. It is also deeply personal. Through the generosity of our sustaining donors who give consecutively year over year, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. Regardless of amount, an annual gift is a valuable investment in our future providing a sustainable foundation of support for academics, extra-curriculars, and inspired teaching.
