Junnu Vainio Juha Harri ”Junnu” Vainio, also known as Juha ”Watt” Vainio (10 May 1938 in Kotka, Finland – 29 October 1990, Gryon, Switzerland) was a Finnish lyricist, singer, composer and teacher. With the lyrics or music to over 2,400 songs to his name, Vainio is as one of Finland’s most prolific lyricists along with Sauvo Puhtila, Reino Helismaa and Vexi Salmi. Vainio enjoyed a short professional career as a teacher at Kymenranta Primary School. Vainio began writing songs in the early 1960s and continued until his death. Apart from his home town Kotka, he lived for several years in Helsinki and Espoo. In his last years Vainio lived in Gryon, Switzerland, where he died of a heart attack in October 1990. He is buried in the family grave in Helsinki. He was given the nickname ”Watt” on account of a song on his first solo record, the 1964 Paras rautalankayhtye (”The Best Rautalanka Band”). Never used by itself, the nickname was always part of ”Juha Watt Vainio”.

Our playlist consist not only of many songs sang by Junnu Vainio himself, but also songs he has written to other artists. Here is a short introduction of some: ALBATROSSI: Song tells a story about two 15-year-old boys. One of them heads out to the sea, one of them stays home because ’his folks told him so’. After this disappointment his life slowly falls apart ending to conclusion: ’Gull is the soul of the man, whose work will remain half-way and who built everything upon a dream’. The other boy is referred to be the albatross. KATSON AUTIOTA HIEKKARANTAA: Katri Helena Kalaoja (née Koistinen, born 17 August 1945) is a Finnish singer, who released her first songs in 1963 and has since sold over 630,000 certified records, which makes her the second-best-selling female soloist in Finland behind Madonna. Junnu Vainio has written the lyrics to this song of longing for love and the summer heat. Katson autiota hiekkarantaa (I look at the solitary beach) is one of Katri Helena’s best known songs. KAUNISSAARI: The song tells a story about a man tired of city life, a man who longs to his home island, where ‘how far you can see is only the sea, and then the skyline”. KESKIYÖN AIKAAN: In the 70s almost every hit published in Europe or US were translated to finnish. Junnu was very productive in this business, and one of Markku Aro’s greatest hits is a cover of Smokie’s I’ll Meet You At Midnight. KOLMATTA LINJAA: Kolmatta linjaa is a cover, too, of Tony Hatch & His Orchestra’s song Beautiful in the Rain. Kolmas linja is a street in Helsinki and recording this song was a quantum jump to Fredi’s (born as Matti Kalevi Siitonen) career taking him 10 years later to Eurovision song contest, where he was placed as 11th. 30 years later Finland won the contest with Lordi’s Hard Rock Hallelujah.

KOTKAN POIKII ILMAN SIIPII: If something, Junnu loved to play on words. In this song, written and performed by Junnu himself, the word ‘Kotka’ can refer to City of Kotka or the meaning of finnish word kotka (=eagle). So the song name could be translated either ‘Sons of the eagle without wings’ or ‘Boys from Kotka without wings’. MUISTO VAIN JÄÄ: This song is a cover of ‘Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart’ recorded by Jouko & Kosti. It has been told that Junnu made the lyrics to this song in 10 minutes. Jouko and Kosti had arrived to studio ready to make a record, but Junnu didn’t have anything ready yet. He told the boys to have a cup of coffee and wrote the lyrics while they were away. The song became one of the greatest hits of 1968. MUN SYDÄMENI TÄNNE JÄÄ: When singer Katri Helena and song writer Veikko Samuli at first saw the lyrics Junnu had made for this song, they didn’t like them at all. They told Junnu that the song was suitable only for funerals. Junnu told them that they would understand the lyrics after they have lived longer and experienced more. Nowadays Mun Sydämeni Tänne Jää (My Heart Stays Here) is an evergreen. SELLAISTA ELÄMÄ ON: This song’s name could be translated ‘Such Is Life’ and it is written and performed by Junnu himself. Inspiration to the song came from the movie Night Moves, where a 40-year-old detective comforts a teenage girl crying her eyes out because her life is a misery saying that if life is difficult as a teenager, it is still as difficult, when you are 40 years old. VANHOJA POIKIA VIIKSEKKÄITÄ: This song written and performed by Junnu himself literally translated refers to bachelors with moustaches, tell about the Saimaa Ringed Seal and a man called Nestori Miikkulainen who lived on an island on Lake Saimaa and was friends with the seal. These seals are among the most endangered seals in the world, having a total population of only about 310 individuals. The only existing population of these seals is found in Lake Saimaa. Main character of the song has given name to Nestori Foundation, which enhances and encourages the work done for the protection of the Saimaa Ringed Seal.

Art from Kotka The souveniers you will receive as a gift from our show committee, are for the 16th time personalised work by graphic artist/printmaker HETA KANANEN, a native Kotka artist, who describes her art as a journey to nature, a shift from light towards dusk.

“I prefer to utilize the classic forms of graphic art. Etching, aquatint and wax engraving are my tools of trade. In working with graphic art, I’m fascinated by the reverse nature of it, and the surprise element embedded in it”, she says.

Katariina Seaside Park

The Katariina Seaside Park located at the southernmost tip of Kotkansaari is a 20-hectare versatile park and recreational area, which enjoys active use throughout the year. Harbour operations ended at the beginning of this millennium. The former tank areas were thoroughly cleaned by the oil companies, and landscaping work commenced in 2004. Due to the large size of the Katariina Seaside Park, its construction still continues. The Katariina Seaside Park was honoured with the International Trend Award 2012 Prize by the European Landscape Contractors Association (ELCA).
