Program Note

_______________________________________________________________

For flute alone, Wind|Whisper bridges the line between music and theatre. The work draws its inspiration from a recent soundwalk I took in Orford, Quebec. From a distance, I heard a soft, unclear sound. Was it a song? As I approached with deep curiousity, I was overtaken by the wonderful tone produced from a flute.

Stage Setup

_______________________________________________________________ The flute should be placed on a stool, or chair if stool is unavailable, in the middle of the stage.

Perfomance Notes

_______________________________________________________________ Enter the stage...

The flutist is asked to perform certain theatrics which are notated as text throughout the work. Make gesture and breath as if ready to play the flute, but make absolutely no sound.

Mutliphonic fingerings are given above the note

Whistle tones should follow the contour of the line as closely as possible.

Round noteheads should be performed with a combination of air and pitch.

Square noteheads should be mostly air.

Play the highest note possible.

Jet Whistle.

Key clicks.

Panting sound following the contour of the arrow.

A deep, determined breath. Sing...

The performer should sing the pitches specified.

Enter the stage, cautiously looking around. Curiously make your way to the flute as you spot it. Pick it up examining it and bring it to your lips.
