Like our big sister festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, the JGFF is a festival for discovering new talent – if you flip to the middle of this brochure you will find short films from young filmmakers all over Ireland. A 10-year-old girl and her friends attempt to use their teleportation device to beam her uncle back to East Germany but instead, as they witness on TV, end up beaming everyone in their town into West Germany! They have to race against time to undo the experiment before the nasty border guards open fire... This year marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall – a monumental day in history that led to Germany’s reunification. OUR NATION’S SONS Director Robert Hallinan Flood | 3 mins A drawing has the power to go further than words. But the twenty meter long drawing installed in Galway at the Spanish Arch has the potential to resonate and disrupt the visual landscape of the city. It has the power to pull a passer-by from the mundane, the power to trend and the power to gain real social momentum, to showcase the capabilities of our nation’s sons. I USED TO LIVE HERE Director Frank Berry | 82 mins Amy Keane, a thirteen-year old trying to cope with the death of her mother and the reappearance of her father’s ex-girlfriend, experiences the temptation of suicide after witnessing the outpouring of love for a local suicide victim. I Used to Live Here takes a fictional look at how the idea of suicide can spread in communities, particularly among young people. Featuring performances from a mostly non-professional cast, and filmed on the streets of Tallaght in West Dublin, this film offers a striking dramatic representation of a real-life community on screen. From the director of the award-winning Ballymun Lullaby and researched with the assistance of Headstrong, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health. These films will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and chaired by Jigsaw Galway, which will give our audience a chance to have their say on the issues raised in the films and suggest ways they can help to make a difference. Story Pitching Competition All are welcome to attend the Pitching Finals on Thursday 13th November at 12:30 in the Town Hall Theatre The Junior Galway Film Fleadh, in association with Foras na Gaeilge and Galway Film Centre announce their seventh annual Story Pitching Competition for 10 – 18 year olds. All you have to do to enter is write a short (500 words) idea for a story – it can be for a feature film, short film, TV series, documentary, web series, video game or anything else! Your entry can be in English or Irish. Draft you idea and practice pitching it in front of family and friends because if you are chosen as a finalist, you will be invited to present it on stage at the Town Hall Theatre to an assembled audience on Thursday 13th November, who will choose the winner. Animation Workshop with Brown Bag Films 12:00 – 15:00, Saturday 15th November, Town Hall Theatre
In this interactive workshop, James Coomey, lead animator on Doc McStuffins, and whose credits include Adventure Time and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, among many others will give participants a run down on everything from storyboarding and its purpose, to how he interprets the artists drawings to create the final performance that audiences see on screen.
SFX Make-Up for the Movies
13:00 – 15:00, Saturday 15th November, Town Hall Theatre From vampires to zombies and all manner of monsters, practical make-up effects are an integral part of modern film and television making. In this workshop, make-up artist Ciara O’Neill will teach participants how to create all kinds of gory special effects (blood, scars, monster make-up and much more) using practical make-up techniques, which they can use in their own films or just for fun.
