The Chesterfield Police Department recently established a ‘Safe Exchange Zone’. SealMaxxPlus offers customers the opportunity to never seal their wood or concrete surfaces again. SealMaxxPlus is a service applied process of cleaning and sealing wood and concrete internally. The process is two days with a day in the middle for drying purposes. The initial application of sealant is applied following a deep cleaning of the wood or concrete. The cleaning removes all previous oil based stains that may have been applied. While wet the wood/concrete sealant is applied and carried into the substrate by the rinse water. After drying for 24 hours the wood may be lightly sanded prior to the application of the moisture barrier sealant. This silicone based product seals the wood and concrete for several years to come. The wood sealant can contain a cedartone stain to give the wood a very natural cedar finish. Concrete sealant, for the most part, is applied as a clear product.

uly and August are ideal months to pack up a basket of your favorite foods, grab your favorite people and head down to the neighborhood park for a picnic. Somehow, simple meals taste better when they’re shared beneath the broad limbs of a tree or seated along the rough bench of a sturdy picnic table. You don’t have to over- think or over –plan it; the best part of a picnic is the spontaneity. Everything you need for a safe, fun-filled afternoon at the park is right at your fingertips.

Food Safety: Keep Cold Foods Cold and Hot Foods Hot

Simple Ideas For Fun Picnics are great for relaxing, but kids aren’t fans of relaxing. Cook up some activities to make the day fun for even the antsy-est member of your troop. Have a scavenger hunt. Write it up ahead of time; bring a prize for the winner. Look for pictures in the clouds. Bring bubbles, bug keepers (empty bottles filled with moist grass), a guitar—if you dare—and fishing poles if you’re near a lake. Remember “Mother-May-I”? “Red Light, Green Light”? “Hide and Seek”? Give your kids the same memories.

It’s Picnic Time

Enjoy Family Time and Make Some Summer Memories

Picnic baskets are fine for cutlery, cups, napkins and foods that don’t need to be kept cool, but everything else should go in a cooler. Freeze

Pack These Essentials

water bottles and place them on top of your food—not only will they keep things cold, you also drink them. Your cooler should register 40 degrees or below. Pack raw foods in the bottom of your cooler so their juices won’t leak onto other food. Don’t transport your cooler in the trunk. When you get to your picnic spot, put the cooler in a shady place and open it as little as possible.

Sunblock Sunglasses Trash bags Paper Towels Moist Towelettes Antibacterial Gel Insect Repellant First Aid Kit Plenty of Water/Beverages • Cell Phone

• Flashlight (if staying past dusk) • Blanket, Lawn Chairs, Tablecloth

Use Common Sense When Cooking and Eating Outdoors Make sure all meat is cooked thoroughly. It’s a good idea to take a meat thermometer with you. According to www.foodsafety.gov , grilled burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees; chicken breasts, 165 degrees. When cooking at the site, don’t use the same platter for both raw and cooked meat. Employ the “Two Hour Rule” to your meal: perishable food should go in the cooler within two hours after eating. If you pick up a bucket of cooked chicken or other already-cooked meals, you should eat them within one hour of purchase.

Protect Yourself Against Insects You’re outside. There will be bugs. But you can still enjoy your picnic. Try these tips. Bees: Wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfumed soaps or deodorants. Mosquitoes: They’re most active at dusk and through the night. Wear repellant and reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Ticks: Insect repellant helps, but nothing can fully protect you from ticks. On windy days, ticks fall from trees and bushes. Check yourself and your children throughout the day. Follow basic safety directions to remove ticks. If a rash or other symptoms develop, see your doctor.

magine for a moment that a child or grandchild of yours has been diagnosed with a rare illness or born with severe physical disabilities. As a parent or grandparent, you are operating in the fog of this revelation, and at the same time, busily ferrying your child to and from numerous doctor visits as he undergoes copious medical tests, meanwhile reading all you can about this condition and the new world you’ve suddenly been thrust into. Would you know where to turn for help? The Medical Relief and Air Transport program (MAT) at Wings of Hope was created for just such a situation. Through our MAT program, we provide air transport for patients and a family member, completely free of charge, to the medical facility in the Midwest most skilled in treating the particular medical condition. After that, patients are transported as often and for as long as treatments are needed. In this way, a spot of light

and hope is brought into an otherwise dim situation. Since the MAT flights are staffed with volunteer pilots and nurses, the largest expense is the fuel to keep the planes in the air. One way we are able to cover these costs and continue to help as many children as possible is with our Champions for Kids program. Our Champions include a growing list of local and regional companies whose leaders have a sincere interest in the health, wellbeing and future of children. As our Director of Development, Laura Helling states, “We know there are a lot of choices for companies to put their charitable dollars. Our donors know that when they lock arms with us, their donation ensures we can help one more child get to the care they need. It really is a big deal to be a Champion for Kids.” We are eternally grateful to our donors and Champions who step up to provide support

For his Bar Mitzvah project, Sam decided to plan a dodge ball tournament to benefit the patients and families at “Friends”! On April 25, Sam’s classmates, friends, family and other community supporters showed up at Game Time Sports in Chesterfield for the Dodge Ball Tournament! After a fun evening of dodge ball and a couple other small fundraisers, Sam raised $2,200 for Friends of Kids with Cancer! Parkway WestCOW Pie-In-The-Face Competition Friends of Kids with Cancer receives an incredible amount of support from the Parkway School District! In early April 2015, the Parkway West High School COW (Community Outreach at West) hosted their annual fundraiser for “Friends” by planning a pie-inthe-face contest! These students paid to nominate their teachers and other faculty members to be pied-in-the-face for a good cause. Parkway West COW did provide a poncho, shower cap and goggles for any participating staff member to use! Students and faculty helped Parkway West donate more than $1,000 for Friends of Kids with Cancer! TimeOff - the What’s Up guide / July-August, 2015

JACK LANE

Jack loves the culture, museums and restaurants in the St. Louis area. A self proclaimed foodie, a few of his favorite restaurants are Scarecrow (near his office in Chesterfield) and Charlie Gitto’s. Café Provencal, Pepe’s Apt #2, Citizens Kane’s and 119 North are among several others he loves. Chesterfield is the ‘Hub’ of Stages, although the theater performances are held in Kirkwood. Shows Up Big on Broadway

You’ve made us proud Jack! What an evening Jack Lane, executive producer of Stages St. Louis, had at the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall. He and several other St. Louisans, plus cast and crew, walked on stage to accept the Tony Award for BEST MUSICAL for Fun Home. Jack is one of the co-producers. The musical is based on a somewhat dysfunctional family, and Jack was blown away with the unique quality of the story. The competition was fierce this year, but Fun Home took home several trophies. The musical took about one year to prepare for Broadway N.Y. and was created with a $5.2 million budget, part of which Jack and others raised. (The average price to bring a play to Broadway is more than $10 mil-

lion!) Jack also produced another Tony winner, Peter and the Starcatcher (which plays at the Rep this year) plus several other incredible productions. Jack was born and raised with his five siblings in Queens and Brooklyn, N.Y. His father was a New York City policeman. He got his start in the theater by singing and acting on Broadway before becoming a producer. Singing still remains his greatest love and he

ductions. Jack has been with Stages for 29 years and is a founding member. The concept for Stages started on a cocktail napkin in 1986 at a bar in Kirkwood! Jack helped grow it from a $50,000 to a 4.3 million dollar business. Truly, Jack’s career is on the rise with this Tony Award but he also has a dream to fulfill at Stages, so he’ll probably be around St. Louis for some time. Says Jack, “Keep an open mind, you never know what’s just around the corner. Age doesn’t make a difference.” Jack currently lives in Des Peres, offices in Chesterfield and has an apartment in Manhattan for his Broadway work.

BUSINESS PROFILE- LUKAS WINE & SPIRITS SUPERSTORE

E

veryone knows Gary!Gary Bilder that is. Owner of the super Lukas Liquorswhich is what is was called for the last 15 years in its first location at the corner of Manchester and Clarkson Roads. If you don’t know Gary its time to go introduce yourself and check out his brand new store on Manchester Road that opened in June. Gary is the Guru of liquor in West County. He and his staff are well educated and informed and they will quide you in the right direction for whatever your needs may be. And don’t worry about the prices- on the average Lukas has the most competitive prices in town. If you like to drink, have friends who do, want to pick up a hostess gift, or bring a bottle of your favorite to a party, check this store out! The new store will knock the socks off you! Rows and rows of all your favorites are stocked on the low profile racks all organized by price and brand. You can practically see the entire store

from any aisle so you may spot something you didn’t necessarily think you came in for! The wide open spaces make it safe as well. There are security cameras all throughout the store. Don’t hesitate to fill up your cart- After checking out, just drive up to the door and one of the friendly staff will load your car with all your prizes. Gigantic offerings of every type of wine, beer or liquor you can think of is available at the new location. If they don’t have it they will most likely order it in for you. (If Missouri law allows that is) Actually, that’s how Gary attracted his first customer. A guy came in with an empty bottle of liquor that he loved and couldn’t find anywhere else. Well, Gary didn’t have it either but managed to call the distributor and got it in a few days. That created a loyal cutomer who has been coming back for years. So will you, once you experience the huge selection, personal attention and low prices not to be beat.

An inside look at the new Lukas Wine & Spirits

A sit down bar is now availabe in the new store where you can order all the top brands of liquor instead of buying the whole bottle. How about a $50 shot of gin! Yep, they have that and way more to offer. You can also buy a bottle of wine, and for a small corkage fee, relax in the bar area and catch up with friends or watch your favorite sport on one of the TV’s. Only beer, wine and plain shots of the ultimate liquors are served at the bar. Sure, there are lots of liquor stores in town but this one is exceptional. Go there and see 37

f camping sounds like the perfect vacation but you’re new to the concept-don’t let your first venture turn you sour due to lack of preparation. The following tips are for those camping in a tent (versus an RV)...

Know your destination Is it hilly? Rocky? Will you be near water? Is firewood available or do you need to bring your own? As long as you are visiting a commercial campsite or State Park, these questions can be answered by a phone call or visit to their website.

Plan, plan, plan Start gathering gear/equipment well in advance of your trip in one central location of your house. Add as you go.

Make lists • Clothing items: sweats/jackets, swimwear, extra shoes • Equipment: tent, plastic ground cloth, lanterns, hammer/rope, firstaid • Meals; list each meal you will need

to prepare and what you will need to prepare it. • Don’t forget staples such as flour, sugar and salt. • Sharp knife, plastic utensils, paper plates/towels, storage bags (all sizes) • Trash bags, can opener, pots, tongs, serving spoons

Practice • Go camping in your back yard.

Unwritten rules... • Leave no trace-the next camper doesn’t want to clean up your mess • Obey quiet times • Control your children • Don’t walk through other campsites • No washing dishes at the water fountains! • And most important- Use Sunscreen! Happy camping.

Camp Close to Home • Babler Memorial State Park Glencoe, MO 636-458-3813 • Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park Wildwood, MO 636-458-3813 • Mark Twain Cave Campground, Hannibal, MO 573-221-1656 • Robertsville State Park,

Serving Beer From a Keg... In St. Louis there are approximately 250 beers available in kegs. Kegs come in three sizes: a half (1/2) barrel contains about seven cases. A quarter (1/4) barrel has three and a half cases. A sixth (1/6) barrel has about two and a half cases. A handful of beers come in a quarter barrel, including Bud Light. When serving beer from a keg make sure you serve it in a 12 oz cup. Beer in a 16 oz cup gets too warm. The keg needs to be iced down at all times. This requires three 20 lb bags of ice for 1/2 barrel. If your keg is not properly chilled you could lose 10% of your beer to foam. A tapper system is used to pump the beer through a hose to a dispensing valve. If the hose is not covered with ice it will get warm. Cold beer going through a warm hose will also result in foam. You’ll save 10% of your beer if you keep the hose cold. Beer will stay fresh for up to five days.

The Craft Beer Craze There are around 1,600 craft breweries throughout the U.S all brewing delicious, flavorful beers. Craft beers pack a puch-they have more alcohol than the big beer companies brands, ranging from 5-10 %. The Crafty Chameleon, Itap and 7 Circle Ranch are several places in the Chesterfield area where you can find hundreds of craft beers on tap and in bottles. Many local restaurants have a myriad of choices as well. O’Fallon Brewery just opened a huge facility in Maryland Heights. Read more about the craft beer craze and the benefits at www.craftbeer.com

Chesterfield Valley’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill!

It’s a St. Louis tradition. A food that everyone craves. Something that every visitor to St. Louis wants to try. Something that is talked about from coast to coast when anyone mentions St. Louis. It’s Imo’s, of course! Along with Ted Drewes, it is truly a St. Louis tradition. Delicious taste, thin crunchy crust, homemade sauce and, of course, provel cheese. It is truly the “square beyond compare”. The Chesterfield Imo’s is independently owned and operated by Mike Riggio. He was one of the first Imo’s in the area having owned his business for nearly 25 years. Mike is at the store practically every day making sure things are running smoothly and the staff is on their toes. That’s one of the reasons the service here is fast and friendly. Mike gets to choose what he carries on his menu so the choices may be a little different than other Imo’s. Check out the website before ordering. You can order online, but an old fashioned phone call will work as well! All items are available for pick up or neighborhood delivery and the Chesterfield location also offers a small dining room for eating in. This makes for a quick place to do lunch with all the offices around the area. Surprisingly, its quick lunch service, giving you time to walk around the block before getting back to the office and get in some excercise to burn off those delicious calories!
