Holly Bruder Head Coach 5th Season

2016-17 Information Guide

16

#PeckEm

Holly Bruder enters her fifth season at Lamar University, having built the Cardinals from a fledgling program to Southland Conference contenders in four years. LU, which had softball from 1983 to 1987, brought softball back in the 2013 season, and Bruder made an immediate impact. The Cardinals won their season-opener in walk-off fashion over UTSA and ended the regular season with three straight walk-off victories over Houston Baptist to clinch a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. Bruder led LU to a record-breaking season in 2016, as the Cardinals set new standards for wins, conference victories, batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage and stolen bases en route to a second-place finish at the Southland Conference Tournament, their best showing ever. LU went 35-22 in 2016, including an 18-9 mark in conference play, good for claiming the No. 3 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. A relentless worker, Bruder has spent countless hours helping make the brand-new LU Softball Complex a reality and one of the best venues in the Southland Conference. She had made numerous public appearances to promote LU softball and stresses the importance of community service to her players. Bruder came to LU from Morehead State, where she went 115-96, leading the Eagles to a second-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2008, the school’s best finish ever, and third-place finishes in 2009 and 2010. She set a school record with 34 wins in 2008 before breaking it with 35 victories in 2009. Prior to her arrival, Morehead State had losing records in eight consecutive seasons and 13 of its previous 14 seasons. Bruder was 145-105 in her six seasons at Denison, winning four North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season titles and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Tournament on three occasions. Bruder began her coaching career at Albion College in Michigan in 1999 and 2000 where she was an assistant coach. In her short time there, she helped transform a downtrodden program into a contender, guiding the team into the conference tournament for the first time in three decades. From there, she spent one season as assistant softball coach and head women’s tennis coach at Bluffton College in 2001, where her twin sister Heather is the current head softball coach. She helped Bluffton to the league’s best record and the top spot in the tournament. After a stellar prep career at Rogers City (Mich.) High School, Bruder was a four-year letterwinner and standout softball and soccer player at Alma College. She helped Alma 2016-17 Information Guide

win three conference titles and advance to the Division III College World Series in 1999, where her squad took third place nationally. She was named Second-Team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1999. Among her other activities, Bruder coached the USA Athletes softball teams, where she has had the opportunity to travel to Germany, Aruba and Australia as an ambassador for the game. She is also an ASA and NSA certified umpire and was on the Central Region All-America Committee from 2003-2006.

Allison Honkofsky Assistant Coach 5th Season

Allison Honkofsky, who played for and coached with Lamar head coach Holly Bruder at Morehead State, enters her fifth season as Holly Bruder’s top assistant at Lamar. Honkofsky, who was Bruder’s first hire at LU, works with the infielders and coordinates LU’s recruiting efforts. Honkofsky played two years for Morehead State (2007, 2008), appearing in 91 games. She hit .248 with three home runs as a senior, helping Morehead State to a 34-16 record, the best mark in school history. She capped her senior year by receiving the Eagle Award as the university’s best all-around athlete. Prior to Morehead State, Honkofsky played one season at Rhode Island before transferring to North Florida Community College, where she earned second-team all-conference honors at shortstop. Bruder said hiring Honkofsky was an easy decision, citing her passion and excitement for softball. “She’s a tremendous recruiter,” Bruder said. “She’s also excellent at practices and game situations.” Honkofsky, a native of Hampstead, Md., holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Morehead State and an associate’s degree from North Florida Community College. 2016-17 Information Guide

Demi Laney Pitching Coach 2nd Season

Demi Laney, a four-year standout at Binghamton University, joined the Lamar University softball staff in the summer of 2015 as pitching coach. Laney’s efforts paid off in 2016, as the Cardinals set modern-era LU records for ERA, shutouts, saves and strikeouts. Under Laney’s tutelage, junior righthander Ciara Luna was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year. Laney established a Binghamton record with 460 career strikeouts and a single-season mark of 171 in 2013. She finished her career with 41 wins and 10 shutouts. Laney, who graduated from Binghamton in 2014 with a degree in environmental studies, served as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater in 2015, helping the Bearcats win the American East Tournament title and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. A two-time all-conference pitcher at Binghamton, Laney was named to the America East Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll (3.5 or better GPA) as a junior and senior. She also contributed offensively, with two multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games, including a grand slam against conference rival Stony Brook as a freshman. 2016-17 Information Guide
