ARTS & CULTURE Studios on the Park is a nonprofit, open studios, art center in the heart of Historic Downtown Paso Robles. It has nine studios with 25 working artists and two galleries. There, you can witness the creative process in action, enroll in a class or workshop, view themed exhibits, or volunteer. Throughout Historic Downtown Paso Robles are wonderful art galleries, shops, and wine tasting venues displaying local art and photography. Wineries feature local painters, sculptors and artisans in tasting rooms or outside. Sculpterra winery features a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden with pieces by John Jagger, Robert Bentley and Dale Evers. Paso Robles holds Art After Dark on the first Saturday of each month from 6-9 pm. Stroll through galleries and gift shops and enjoy the wine tasting rooms and art on display.
PASO ROBLES ART SCENE Paso Robles is home to a vibrant and growing wine industry and hosts many festivals, tasting events, celebrations, and community events. Many resident artists call Paso home, and art, music and cultural events can be found throughout town and the surrounding county.
Paso Robles’ main cultural event is the Paderewski Music Festival, honoring Jan Paderewski, a Polish composer and pianist who settled in Paso Robles in the early 1900s.
The PAC, or Performing Arts Center, with its postmodern architecture and superb acoustics, is located on the campus of Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, about 35 minutes south of Paso Robles. The facility offers musical artists, plays, ballets, dance performances Studios on the Park holds the annual Paso ArtsFest, the and the San Luis Obispo Symphony. LAKE SAN ANTONIO Lake San Antonio is Monterey County’s premier fresh water recreation area, offering boating, waterskiing, fishing and camping. The lake offers boat rentals, or visitors can bring their own. Horseback riding and mountain biking are also popular with 26 miles of trails. Lake San Antonio is the site of the annual Wildflower Triathlon, one of the largest triathlon events in the world. The lake is a popular camping destination with over 500 campsites, many with RV hookups. The North Shore of Lake San Antonio is sought after, as it is one of the few places in California that permits camping at the water’s edge, with the ability to anchor a boat in the water nearby. Campsites at Lake San Antonio are varied and spacious, and are available on the North Shore and South Shore of the lake, as well as in more forested areas. Wildlife can be spotted throughout the area, with deer
frequenting campsites during daylight hours. Mountain lions, snakes, wild pigs, raccoons, bobcats, and honey badgers can be observed, as well as American Bald Eagles. Tours are offered during winter months, when visitors can view the Bald Eagle in its natural habitat. Lake San Antonio’s primary purpose is to provide groundwater. Without the lake, the San Antonio River would be nearly dry throughout the summer months, and with the river full year-round, more water can seep into the ground. The lake was formed by the construction of San Antonio Dam on the San Antonio River in 1965. 202’ tall, the dam was completed under Monterey County District Engineer Loran Bunte Jr. The lake has a capacity of 350,000 acre feet (430,000,000 m3) of water. www.lakesanantonioresort.com

CHARLES PADDOCK ZOO & LAKE PARK Atascadero Lake Park and Zoo is a wonderful family and visitor destination year-round. Swans, geese, mallards and other water fowl make Atascadero Lake their home. The lake is easily accessible and is surrounded by a walking path with workout stations and benches. Paddle boats and kayak boats are available to rent. A large pavilion with a view of the lake is available to rent for gatherings of all kinds, from meetings to wedding receptions. The picturesque covered gazebo is located in a shady area near the pavilion. visitatascadero.com/atascadero-parks/atascadero-lake Accredited since 1991, the Charles Paddock Zoo is a small zoo of 5-acres located adjacent to Atascadero Lake Park, and is the only zoo on the Central Coast. The zoo was started by Charles “Chuck� Paddock, a county park ranger, in the county animal shelter in 1955. Mr. Paddock nursed wild animals back to health, and by 1959 his menagerie contained over 125 birds and mammals. In 1963 the animals were moved to the current location adjacent to the Atascadero Lake Park. The zoo is currently home to more than 100 animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The styles of wine are diverse in this very distinct region. Traversing the landscape you will find Paso Robles wines are characteristically rich and well-developed, thriving with the long and consistent growing seasons of the Central Coast. The red wines of Paso Robles are naturally fruit-forward, with good complexity and a medium-soft tannin structure. While Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Paso’s plantings at 38%, it’s the rich Rhône Valley blends that are gaining the most notoriety. Paso Robles claims the largest plantings of Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne in California along with heavy plantings of both Grenache and Mourvédre.

EAST MEETS WEST ALONG HIGHWAY 46 The West side is situated just 6 miles inland of the Pacific Ocean and bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountains. The limestone-driven soil on the West side is similar to the fine wine regions in France. The day to night temperature swings are the most dramatic of California appellations, with a 40-50 degree change in temperature considered commonplace thanks to the power of the Pacific’s cool climate influence streaming through the Templeton Gap providing perfect conditions for Rhône Valley grapes. The East side enjoys hot, dry growing conditions, rooted on the looser alluvial soil of the flatlands ensuring excellent drainage for low vine vigor and assertive flavor development.
AWARDS ABOUND Paso Robles wine region was named the top wine region by Wine Enthusiast last year, and recently was recognized as one of The Guardian’s top places to visit in 2014. The region also won big at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this year, with several wines from the area receiving top awards. PLAN FOR THE WEATHER Paso Robles often experiences hot days and cool nights during the months of May – October. Remember that barrel rooms and cellars are temperature controlled, so bring a sweater and dress in layers.
STAY HYDRATED! Tasting rooms typically offer approximately five or more wines to taste so stay hydrated! Bring bottles of water and snacks with you to cleanse your palette and keep hydrated.
RESPONSIBLE TASTING The four S’s are “Swirl, Smell, Sip and Spit.” This tip is very important, and this practice is a great way to taste a lot of different wines and experience their individual characteristics. Many tasting rooms offer wines by the glass to enjoy with lunch, so sit, stay a while and take in the beautiful surroundings.
SCHEDULE & TIMING When visiting a tasting room you typically do not have to make an appointment unless the winery states that they are open by appointment only or you have a group of 5 or more. Most tasting rooms are open between 10am-11am and close between 4pm-5pm. Please be courteous when you visit a winery close to their closing time. It typically takes approximately 30-45 minutes to taste through a flight of wine so try to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to a closing. Depending if you are sipping wines downtown or at far out wineries, plan for about 5-15 minutes travel time between wineries.

PASO ROBLES OLIVE OIL IT’S IN THE SOIL Sharing a common history with California’s grapes, California’s olives came to the state in the eighteenth century, when Spanish missionaries planted olive trees and grapevines at each of the 21 missions. Olives seem to do particularly well in Paso Robles. The same distinctive soils and extreme swings in temperature that grow the region’s award winning wines foster the award winning olive oils.
They are hand harvested, rinsed and cold pressed within hours after harvest. Unlike wine, olive oil is ready to enjoy in a matter of days. Fresh olive oil has distinctive flavors that reflect the type of olive fruit from which it is produced – as well as the earth, climate, growing conditions, and time of harvest. Excellent extra virgin olive oil should be balanced in three flavor dimensions: olive fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency/pepperiness.

DINING La Cosecha Bar and Restaurant specializes in Spanish and South American flavors including fresh local produce, meats and cheeses. Spanish for “the harvest,� the restaurant is the second of celebrated Chef Santos MacDonal. Artisan was established by two brothers, Michael and Chris Kobayashi, and is an American bistro that offers elegant local food and wine. Chris serves as chef, and has been nominated as James Beard best chef: Pacific. The food is good and beautifully presented.
CHEFS & CULINARY SCENE Everywhere you turn in Paso Robles there is great food to be found. Over the past decade Paso Robles has become a mecca for fine dining on the Central Coast. With the explosion of the wine industry in the region, Paso has attracted excellent restaurants and chefs from San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and from overseas who cater to discriminating palates. Seasonal menus and locally grown produce handpicked from farmers markets and organic farms are popular in Paso Robles. Thomas Hill Organics grows vegetables, fruit, and nuts, while Villa Creek raises goats, pigs and free range chickens and grows nuts, fruit and vegetables. Thomas Hill Organics and Villa Creek feature their own seasonal ingredients in their menus. They both offer fantastic al fresco dining perfect for Paso Robles summer evenings. Bistro Laurent is owned by Chef Laurent, who worked in kitchens in Bordeaux, France before coming to California. He is the only chef in the area who ran European Michelin star restaurants. Bistro Laurent enjoys an outstanding reputation for serving elegant yet casual country French cuisine. Chef Antonio Varia of Buona Tavola restaurant and Alex Pellini have placed their line of fine meats in hundreds of grocery stores, gourmet shops, and eateries. Chef Justin from Roberts Restaurant and Wine Bar went overseas to the Micronesian Islands to hone his skills as a pastry chef at exotic vacation resorts. Roberts offers a fresh approach to classic American cuisine and features an impressive list of top wines and beers with an emphasis on local stars. Executive Chef Travis Borba of Estrella Restaurant has deep roots in the area as a 5th generation Central Coast Native. While at Western Culinary he was a member of the Charcuterie Club, where he learned the art of making sausage, bacon, pastrami and many other cured and dried meats. The menu at Estrella offers influences from Spain, the Caribbean, South America and Mexico. Chef Andre Averseng, owner of PasoTerra Restaurant completed his culinary training in France from a generation of Chefs. He met his wife Cristina in the U.S. and together they bring the South of France to Paso Robles with outstanding seafood, rack of lamb and wine influenced cuisine to the downtown park. Second Press Wine Bar and Eatery, one of the newest restaurants in downtown Paso Robles, is fast becoming a favorite restaurant among the locals and wine country travelers alike. Executive Chef Ryan Swarthout, together with Sous Chef William Ouderkirk, impeccably prepares each item on the menu with the multiple steps, quality ingredients, flavors and care that are traditional in the art of Wine-Country cuisine.
