PANEL Campaigns that change the world

PANEL Breaking through Silos 10.20H - 11.00H / ZAAL 2

11.10H – 12.00H / ZAAL 1

The take up of digital technologies has brought forth newly emerged networks of digital toolmakers, hackers and activists. They differ from more traditional NGOs in their scope of organizing, their tactics and their skills in using tech. Despite their complementary expertise, both sides often remain siloed. An open dialogue and clear commitments between digital activists, NGOs and the donor side is needed to identify serious steps to tackle main challenges for stronger collaboration. In the panel experts from the civic tech, NGO and donor side will discuss their experiences with stepping ‘out of their silo’. With David Saldivar (Oxfam USA), Lea Gimpel (GIZ), Everton Zanella Alvarenga (Open Knowledge Brasil), Bethel Tsegaye (FPU) and Kersti Wissenbach (University of Amsterdam).

From South Korea to Lapland, from Australia to the Netherlands: what do successful campaigns have in common? What are the ingredients of innovative, revolutionary and provocative campaigns with a social impact? Marc Oosterhout (N=5), Tim Claassen (Lemz) and Willa Stoutenbeek (W.Green) will discuss campaigns that changed the world.

WORKSHOP PPP Canvas

SESSION Innovative collaborations

In their work on creating shared value, public private partnerships (PPPs) require appropriate tools and models to support their developments. Together with BOP Inc and REBEL Group, PPPLab has developed the PPP Canvas; a new tool based on the famous Business Model Canvas. PPP Canvas is a strategic management and entrepreneurial tool, which includes the description of the social value and impact of a PPP. In this workshop PPPLab will present the PPP Canvas, give an introduction to the basics of the model and provide insight into how and when to use it. by PPPLab

“If you do what you did, you get what you got.” Sometimes your existing network or partners cannot offer the best solutions to the challenges at hand, and it’s time to look for new, innovative collaborations. Based on experiences from The Netherlands Red Cross, The Art of Impact and HiiL we will explore how these new collaborations might work. In an interactive session we will discuss what makes these new collaborations different from business-as-usual and pinpoint what they require from the different participants, and try to tackle the challenges these new initiatives encounter. by Mariken Gaanderse and Pelle Aardema (Open for Change)

WORKSHOP Game Based Change

WORKSHOP Breaking through Silos

10.20H – 11.30H / FOYER

11.00H - 11.50H / ZAAL 2

Serious gaming can be an innovative form of learning that leads to social change. At the Connected Development Festival you are invited to play a live game to experience this form of learning. Together, we find out what added value serious games can provide in cooperation with local partners and which issues you have to take into account when developing these games. Want to play along? by Sansaparilla

This is a subsequent workshop of the panel ‘Breaking through Silos’. In this workshop we will deep dive into three areas identified as main obstructions of better collaboration between the civic tech community, NGOs and donors. Together we will explore solutions for how to reuse and build upon existing tools, share the same language and pace of working, rethink innovation and start with the problem, not the solution. by Kersti Wissenbach (University of Amsterdam)

INNOVATIESAFARI

WORKSHOP Disruptive Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship

TOURS START AT 10.20H & 15.10H / FOYER

Last year Partos published a book, ‘Van Start-ups tot Striphelden’, which described various innovative projects of Partos member organisations. Now, one year later, join the ‘innovation safari’ along these organisations to see how far they have come and what they are up to now.The book’s authors, Peter van Lier & Menno Bosma, will be your enthusiastic tour guides. Visit Aflatoun, Hivos, Plan Nederland and Simavi in Tour 1 (10.20h). See Oxfam Novib, PAX and Terre des Hommes in Tour 2 (15.10h). by Peter van Lier and Menno Bosma

11.50H – 13.00H / STUDIO B

How do we create a stimulating environment for disruptive innovation in social entrepreneurship? Only when social business proposals reach the market and scale up, they can achieve the desired impact. So how do we ensure that these proposals reach the market more often? And why is disruptive innovation necessary? How can we make sure that social entrepreneurship is no longer a niche? In answering these questions Nyenrode Business University and iMPACT Booster will offer insights into the innovation process and holistic approaches. by Nyenrode Business University and iMPACT Booster

SESSION Development data: One Step Beyond

WORKSHOP Innovative activation tools for social change

In the last five years much emphasis has been put on the publication of open development data. How useful has this effort been? What have we learned so far? Which insights did we gain? Theo van de Sande (The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Leonardo Pérez-Aranda (Oxfam Intermón) and Rolf Kleef (Open for Change) will share their insights on this subject and together we will explore what the future has in store for open development data.

Are you working in the field of social change? Are you interested in serious gaming and interactive campaigns? Are you looking for new, innovative ideas that will have a high impact? During this one-hour session we will use creative thinking and ideation exercises to draw up with a list of crazy, funny and great ideas. We will think out of the box, move outside of our comfort zone and end up with inspiration and new ways to bring about social change. The only rule is never to say that anything is impossible, or at least not for one hour. by Merel van der Woude (Butterfly Works)

WORKSHOP NGO of the Future 1

PARTOS GENERAL MEMBERS ASSEMBLY

NGOs are being challenged to adapt and change in response to new forms of social activism, changes in partner relations, and the growing pressure on space for civil society. NGOs have to be able to navigate in situations with shifting dynamics. Organisations need to look at their multi-annual plans to see what adaptations will be necessary to enable them to make a difference in the future. But what if we can fantasise freely about the NGO of the Future? What kind of developments can we expect to see in 20–30 years? What will be the environment of the NGOs of the Future and what challenges will they face? by StadsLAB033

All Executive Directors of Partos member organisations (or their representatives) are invited to join the Partos General Members Assembly. Lunch will be available at the Studio for GMA participants.

WORKSHOP Ethics and Digital Security

WORKSHOP NGO of the Future 2

‘ICT for Development’ projects make use of many different kinds of data throughout the project cycle. Along the way, sensitive information about organisations and the communities they work with can end up in unintended places. This session will introduce a variety of hands-on ‘information mapping’ activities to help practitioners think through practical concerns regarding the security and privacy of data they handle on a daily basis. by Becky Kazansky (University of Amsterdam)

NGOs are being challenged to adapt and change in response to new forms of social activism, changes in partner relations, the pressure on space for civil society, etc. NGOs have to be able to navigate in situations with shifting dynamics. Organisations need to look at their multi-annual plans to see what adaptations will be necessary to be able to make a difference in the future. WORKSHOP Inclusive Business Development

WORKSHOP Tell your story with Open Data

Can we create a link between social inclusion and business development, so no one will be left behind? Is it possible to truly include marginalised groups in business development and the value chain? In this workshop we will try to tackle this business challenge with the support of the Wicked Problem Plaza methodology. Together we will get to the core of this problem and search for solutions to make business development more inclusive. by Partos working group ‘Leave no one behind’ & Wicked Problem Plaza

Are you working on global issues or in an international environment? Do you wish to communicate about your mission and vision in a more visual way? OneWorld’s data journalist Ellen de Lange will show you how data can enrich your narrative and how interactive maps can show your story in a split second. by Ellen de Lange (OneWorld)

PANEL Imaging of the refugee crisis

WORKSHOP The data revolution: transforming development

14.00H – 15.00H / ZAAL 1

14.50H – 15.50H / STUDIO

A tsunami of refugees? Young men with iPhones only here to change their fortune? Defenceless women and children desperately in need of our support? The images of refugees that keep appearing in the media are diverse and tell a multitude of different stories. But what are the consequences of the current framing of the refugee crisis? Artist Saskia Stolz, Marc Oosterhout (N=5), Jan van Betten (‘Minister van Dichtbij / Innovatiekabinet’) and Pauline Voortman (‘Minister van Vertrouwen / Innovatiekabinet’) will discuss how we can imagine the refugee crisis in new ways to tell more honest stories.

Akvo will take you on a journey through the current state of data collection in the field, and present their application supporting Vanuatu’s and Nepal’s disaster response in their damage assessment. This session will also feature showcases on recent innovations - such as involving sensors for water quality testing using mobile phones, and incorporate the latest development of the use of sensors in Water and Agriculture. by Akvo

TALKSHOW Disruptive Innovations, Disruptive Progress

WORKSHOP Visual Innovation Bootcamp 15.10H – 16.40H / ARTIST FOYER

15.10H – 15.50H / ZAAL 2

When it comes to innovation you often think in images: you want to express the way you see a problem and its solution. Innovation is the development of new and better products, services, ways of working or solutions that do not yet exist. That is why imagination is necessary to create innovation and to communicate about it. Visualisation is a huge help. At the Visual Innovation Bootcamp you will experience a visual way of innovating, work on different innovating techniques and apply your new skills directly. by Janne Vereijken (Spring Company) and Jeroen Blijsie (The Visual Connection)

Guests Guido van Staveren van Dijk (Moyee Coffee), Ronald Mulder (OnsBasisinkomen), Thomas Vaassen (Landmapp), Wendelien Hebly and Mariah Mansvelt Beck (Yoni) look into several revolutionary initiatives that work disruptively, that turn the world upside down and ignite innovation with impact. Linda Vermaat (Professional Rebel) will ask the guests about the dilemmas they have encountered, which traditions they ignored and what tips these innovators may have for you. See and find out!

WORKSHOP Drones for Good

WORKSHOP Exclusion Radar

Drones are usually framed and seen as instruments of war that powerful governments use to spy on civilians and terrorists. But what if we were to design drones for good? Could these new flying technologies help us solve problems? And what about more creative applications such as cuddly drones, disco drones or cleaning drones? Join our workshop and design your own goodhearted, problem-solving or creative drone. by medialab SETUP

The current methods for identifying the extremely poor are very limited. The Exclusion Radar could be a fast and cheap instrument to do this. Considering the advances in ICTs in developing countries, there may well be unexpected sources of information that could be used to diagnose poverty, such as through big data analysis and citizen-generated data. The first step in this endeavour is called ‘rapid prototyping’. Ulrich Mans and Jorn Poldermans (Centre for Innovation at Leiden University) will facilitate a mini rapid prototyping session. by Centre for Innovation (Leiden University)

KEYNOTE SPEECH Jonathan Gray

The ‘Internationale SamenwerkingsPoort’ is a biennial meeting where Dutch NGOs, politicians, entrepreneurs, journalists and knowledge institutions discuss the state of affairs in international relations. The Connected Development Festival is hosting the ‘Poort’ that will focus on the current refugee crisis and the pressure it puts on the European project. Today, we take a look into the future: Is a harmonised EU refugee policy possible under the Dutch EU presidency? Speakers are prof. dr. Leo Lucassen (Leiden University), Joyce Oomen (ManpowerGroup), Simone Filippini (Cordaid), Bram van Ojik (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and prof. dr. Karim Saleh Abdul (Kurdistan Regional Government).

In this keynote speech, Jonathan Gray, Director of Policy and Research at Open Knowledge, will talk about the ‘data revolution’.What will this revolution enable? What will it be about? What will it count? What kinds of risk and harm might it bring? Whom and what will it serve? And who will get to decide? Jonathan will explore civil society engagement with the data revolution. He will propose an agenda for moving beyond a focus on the disclosure of existing information, towards more ambitious and substantive forms of democratic engagement with data infrastructures.
