Dear Parent/Carer

ICT Mark AwardED The ICT Mark Award, accredited in August following an external assessment of our school was presented by Ian Livingstone CBE to Park View students at the BETT Show this year. We were awarded the ICT Mark accreditation for our extensive use of ICT and forefront modern technology by the Naace Information and Communications Technology association. The profile of ICT has been raised significantly here at Park View. Well Done to everyone!

Welcome to our Spring term Newsletter! Although this has been a short spring term it has not been lacking in terms of activity. You already know how delighted we are with the outcomes of the OfSTED inspection and there has been time since for further reflection. To be called a good school with outstanding leadership and management was a great achievement, but we know better is to come. It was so reassuring to be recognised for how well all groups of students achieve, for the ‘exemplary’ attitudes students have towards their studies, our literacy and anti-bullying work and the overall ethos of the school. We are currently working on a future vision to take the school to ‘outstanding’ and beyond. No one should doubt that we will get there. At the time of writing Academic Achievement Day is a week away. Thank you for your support on that day as we work together to ensure your child achieves the best possible outcomes. Those conversations set the tone for the remainder of the year, it is so important that you follow up and see if your child is delivering on the promises made on that day.

Park View’s Public Speakers Between December 2012 and February 2013, a group of Gifted & Talented students in Year 10 took part in this year’s Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. This was an excellent opportunity for students to improve their public speaking skills and confidence levels. Our students dazzled Precious, the workshop leader, with their levels of creativity and spontaneity on the day. She commented that both workshops with our Year 10 pupils were her ‘best to date’ at Park View. The initial workshops lead to two fantastic students, Alexa Massengo (10K) and Terehas Kelly (10W), competing in the Speak Out Haringey finals. Both girls worked maturely and diligently with other students from the borough and performed their speeches (without notes!) at Highgate Wood. Although they did not make it through to the next round both they represented Park View wonderfully. Well done Terehas and Alexa! Ms Black Gifted & Talented coordinator

THE EDEN PROJECT The EDEN project, involves students designing, creating, developing and maintaining, themed gardens within our school grounds. The aim is to inspire students to embrace growing food at school and at home. Plans include an organic fruit and vegetable garden, an area for hens, an orchard with wildflower meadows as well as wildlife habitat, including a pond. This exciting project has been up and running for several weeks; so far the students have learned how to sow seeds such as chilli peppers, basil, thyme and other herbs; they have also planted various fruit bushes in the plot near the multi-games area.

Parents will be able to participate in related workshops, e.g. ‘Growing food in limited spaces’ during our Saturday Gardening events. Volunteer events will engage the wider community in the development and maintenance of the gardens. Ms M Dyer SEBD Coordinator

There will be opportunities for students, staff, parents and volunteers from the wider community to engage in regular, interactive, food growing workshops and environmental activities, thus developing an understanding and respect for natural ecosystems, where/ how food grows as well as nurturing/ eating the organic food grown. All students and staff will be invited to participate in environmental/art education workshops.

Gifted & Talented Writers On Wednesday 13th March 2013, rap poet Adisa, ran a poetry workshop with 25 Gifted & Talented (English) students. The day proved to be very inspirational for some of our most talented writers at Park View. Regardless of the challenge of the tasks, our Year 7s threw themselves into the day with great enthusiasm and energy. It wasn’t long before Adisa had them on their feet rapping and rhyming with rhythm. Superb effort from all involved! Ms Black, Gifted & Talented coordinator

Modern Foreign Languages Just before Christmas, selected students of Year 9 French spent the day at the French Institute in South Kensington. Students were able to visit the Institute’s mediatheque (digital library) and enjoy watching a French language film. Students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to develop their cultural awareness and explore different learning opportunities outside of the school context. In early March, we took part in the national VocabExpress championships, which involved students competing against each other and other schools to learn as much new French or Spanish vocabulary as possible during a five day period. The student with the highest number of points from Park View was Lou Tra (Year 9), so many congratulations to her on this fantastic achievement. In second place was Irina Campan (year 8) and in third

place, Nicola Puklejova (Year 7). Well done to all students for participating with such enthusiasm. Later this month, Year 10 students of French will be visiting the French patisserie Belle Epoque in Newington Green. Students will enjoy a typical French breakfast and a tour of the patisserie’s kitchen, which will give them the opportunity to practice their language skills with native speakers. Year 11 students of Spanish will also have the opportunity to practise their language skills in an authentic setting when we visit the tapas restaurant La pradera to celebrate the end of the GCSE course in early May. Final GCSE exams will be taken by our Year 11 students of MFL in early May (14th for French, 17th Spanish and various for Turkish.) We would like to take this opportunity to say how

much we have genuinely enjoyed teaching the Year 11 classes this year. They have been an absolute delight and we have been impressed by their commitment and effort and are very proud of them. We wish them every success in their forthcoming GCSEs and in the future and really shall miss them. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all colleagues, parents, carers and students a peaceful and enjoyable Easter break. Ms Vann and the MFL team

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Though this Easter term has been a very short one, it has been packed full of exciting events and inspiring work. We were privileged once again to play host to the RAF and BAE Systems who came to Park View on the 4 March to run a STEM workshop about engineering and careers. The students had to work in teams and solve a series of mathematical problems. The organisers were very impressed with our students’ team work and questioning skills. They look forward to returning next year.

Ms Beith’s Year 11 BTEC class are close to finishing their fourth and final unit, looking at the history of fashion in 20th century. Students will be beginning to design a contemporary fashion range based on the

clothes of the decade they have studied. Once that is complete, students will be improving the other 3 units. They will be able to do this in class and also in after school sessions run daily. Ms X Beith D&T Teacher

Ms Patel and MS Hill’s Year 11 3D design class are close to finishing their furniture unit and the outcomes are looking amazing. They have shown creativity and flair in their design work and independence in their making as you can see from the pictures.

EAL students and COMIC RELIEF!!!! The EAL students have been practicing their English skills by selling Red Noses for comic relief! They have also been running a competition at lunch and break times (guess the number of sweets in the jar) where the winner will receive hundreds of sweets! We are really proud of our pupils, as this is the first time that EAL students have been involved in a whole school fundraising project…we definitely have some future world leaders and entrepreneurs in our school! A big well done particularly to Gani Asenov, Ilya Manchev, Aksel Arifov, Amin Ali and Saad Ali. So far we have raised £181 and counting… Thank you Ms Chaudhury for all the organisation.

Year 8 Football Team

counselling SERVICE There are times when we all need someone to talk to. Young people face many challenges whilst growing up and find they need someone to talk to outside of home or school. Counselling is a process which offers support and guidance. The counsellor will listen and provide a safe place for a young person to explore their thoughts and feelings which perhaps are overwhelming and upsetting.

The Year 8 team have had a fantastic term. While the league took its winter break the Year 8 team kept up their incredible winning streak reaching the quarter finals of the Middlesex Cup. And in the National Cup they beat the best that South London, Sussex, Essex and Kent could offer on the way to the last 16, before eventually falling to Suffolk’s finest in an extremely close match where luck wasn’t on our side.

average between 6-9 weeks and can be extended if necessary. If you are concerned about a student, please contact your HOY or call us on 0208 888 1722 Ext: 184.

The school counselling service is for all students between Years 7 and 11. The service is run by 2 experienced and qualified counsellors who are available throughout term time to help support and manage the emotional and psychological well-being of students. Feray Dervish and Justin Lee are members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and are bound by their Code of Ethics.

The team’s achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, who are captained brilliantly by Kyle Lynch (8R), and they should be incredibly proud of themselves and the unprecedented success they have had. They are a talented group of footballers, but more importantly they have become a very good team and really progressed from last year. We now look forward to completing our league season and once again proving we are the outstanding team in Haringey.

Students can come and speak directly with the counsellor in G11 or any member of staff who can arrange an appointment. A student referral form is completed for the counsellor before an appointment is made. Once the referral is received the lead counsellor will meet with the student. Sessions are on

Finally, a special mention must go to Mentor Ramadani (8E) and Kyle Lynch who have seen their outstanding performances rewarded with trials at Norwich City. The team wishes them well with their efforts. Mr Hill, Year 8 Football Coach
