The long gun registry is well on its way to the ash-heap and that’s a good thing, says NanaimoAlberni MP James Lunney. “This fulfills a long-time commitment to constituents,” said Lunney, who campaigned through five elections on a promise to end the registry. He said the long gun registry was resented by hunters and outdoorsmen, all of whom already possess a license to own a firearm. He added that the registry was expensive and full of administrative errors, which created a nightmare for sportsmen and an unreliable data base for police. “Opposition parties JAMES LUNNEY are demanding tougher laws for law-abiding farmers and duck hunters while opposing tougher penalties for violent criminals and rapists,” said Lunney. Lunney’s elation at the pending demise of the long gun registry was shared by Leonard Fong, the past-president of the Parksville-Qualicum Fish and Game Club. “It just has to go to the Senate and that’s top heavy with the right people, so I guess it’s going to be history,” Fong said. “I think that’s a good thing.” See LONG GUN, page A4

Less enthusiastic was Rick Sullivan, the spokesperson for the Oceanside Coalition for Strong Communities. “I don’t know what it’s going to mean, but I rely on the advice of people who do know,” he said. “The Police Chiefs of Canada Association said it was a very useful tool and they would regret to

see it go.” Sullivan said the government ignored that advice — and the wishes of the majority of Canadians when they opted to destroy the registry. “When you get advice from an organization like the chiefs of police across this country and you ignore that as government, you are just blindly going ahead with your ideology or what your supporters say must be done,” he said. “I think they are pandering to a minority of people in this country against the advice of the police and it doesn’t make any sense to me.” The bill is expected to pass quickly through the Senate and move to Royal Assent.

Search for the golden shears Parksville’s Jens van Draby is looking for a prized possession - a set of extraordinary scissors - that is part of his life’s story, and that of his family NEIL HORNER

here’s something very important missing from Jens van Draby’s life these days, and looking for it has become something of an obsession. The 84-year-old Danish-Canadian Parksville resident has turned his little McCarter Street home upside down looking for his set of scissors, but now he’s certain they’re just not there. If they were ordinary scissors, he would be happy to just buy another pair, but, he said, these are no ordinary scissors. “I inherited them from my mother,” he said. “My father bought them before the war one time when he went to Eskilstuna in Sweden.” The set of two scissors, one 10 inches long and a smaller, six-inch pair, were made as part of a special celebration in that historic town. “The town was commemorating their 900th year as an industrial town and they made some scissors, hunting knives and carving sets,” he said. “My father bought them and he gave the scissors to my mother and then I inherited them

55 years ago. They are in a red leather case and they’re gilded, so you can see them a mile away. There’s no other scissors like them — very classy stuff.” A dedicated fabric artist, van Draby said he used the scissors when he worked as a costume and set designer for the Bastion Theatre Company in Victoria, creating pieces for productions of Damn Yankees, Showboat, Kiss Me Kate and The King And I. “I also did the opening for the auditorium in Vancouver,” he said. “It was the opera Orpheus and Eurydice,” and it was really nice for me because the person who sang the part of Orpheus was also Swedish, so we could talk about everybody else in Swedish. We had lots of fun.” He got his start in the costume and set design business many years ago, he said, in Victoria, learning the craft from another Scandinavian, Lilly Bohlin, who moved from Stockholm, who, having won all the first prizes available in the spinning and weaving world there, wanted to start a school and chose Victoria as her venue of choice. “She came to Victoria because of the climate and moved into the second last house on your left hand side when you went down towards the Empress on Government Street,” he said. “It had used to be a whorehouse and she got it for next to nothing. She set up her weaving school there.” Later, he said, Bohlin moved to Oak Bay Avenue in Victoria and opened the Sidestreet Studio, where she showed her works and continued to teach. Sealion show at Beachcomber Area park the best place to see congregation of sealions, birds NEIL HORNER

Sandra Gray can normally be found out in a field, sporting a pair of binoculars and a bird book, trying to find some interesting species to add to her tally. When the avid birder went to Beachcomber Park however, she found herself faced with wildlife action on a far bigger scale. In amongst the scoters ducks and gulls she expected to find were hundreds of sea lions barking, lolling and feeding. It was, she said, quite a show. “The sea lion and bird show at Beachcomber Park is fantastic right now,” she said. “You have to go right down onto the rocky shelf for close up views to see the groups of California and Stellar sea lions — from five to as many as 150 — swimming about, sleeping with flippers up, challenging each other, roaring, barking ... you may need ear plugs.” She said the park has seen a surge in visitors of the human and bird kinds as well. “Many local birders noticed a greater than usual increase in bird activity in Northwest Bay, Cottam Point, Dorcas Point area early in January,” she said. “The numbers have increased some days to hundreds of thousands of birds, particularly Common Murres. Usually we get a few sightings over the winter but not what we have had recently. “The herring are obviously here and the sea lions and birds know it!” she said. “I’m not sure if it’s true, but if it is, that’s a big concern.” In response, Dennis Trudeau, the general manager of transportation and solid waste services said he was unaware of any such activity an noted that trucks coming into the landfill are checked by staff. “Most communities and local governments hear that from time to time, that people spend all this time separating their garbage and it goes into a landfill, but we do not have that concern at this time,” he said. Trudeau noted there has been a problem with recycling glass, but he said the district is working with industry to find a way to deal with the material. As well, Willie expressed concern about the size of the trucks used to collect household food waste. “I look at those huge trucks and how they pick up food waste and then I look at the tiny pile they dump at Church Road and I don’t know why they need a truck that big,” he said. Again, Trudeau noted that the contractor who provides that service is a private company and while he agreed the loads at times look fairly small, he said he’s confident they plan for the volume they get. Overall, he said, he is completely satisfied with the service provided. “We are getting exactly what we thought we were going to get, and a little bit more,” he said.

Retiring at last to Parksville, van Draby did some teaching himself, working with the Qualicum Beach Spinners and Weavers and the Qualicum Beach Needle Arts and the Thursday Spinners. “I did a recreation of a panel from the Bayeux Tapestry,” he said. “I did a course and 17 people made one. It’s an exact copy, although I changed it because there was originally a lion or a leopard at the bottom and I made it into one with its tail in its mouth, because Harold should not have gone to fight William. If he hadn’t we would all be speaking Celtic today.” Some time between October of last year and the end of November, his gilded shears disappeared, most likely, he said, from the Civic Centre. “Maybe somebody found them,” he said. “I had them at the Civic Centre in October and then at the November meeting I realized I didn’t have my scissors, which I thought was peculiar, because I’d had them at the October meeting.” The missing shears, he said, are important to him and finding them has become a mission. “I’m sure my scissors miss me as much as I miss them,” he said. “I looked everywhere, absolutely everywhere. I have turned everything up-

Power pole cut down: RCMP ERRINGTON — Metal thieves are being fingered as the cause of a power outage in Errington on Feb. 16. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman said police responding to a dangerous situation at the end of Dunn Road in Errington at 10:30 a.m. found a live BC Hydro pole on the ground. “Upon further investigation it was apparent that the pole had been deliberately cut down with a chain saw,” he said, noting it appeared the pole was cut by culprits attempting to steal copper and

other metals. The felling of the pole resulted in the loss of power to a nearby trailer park. However, BC Hydro was able to quickly restore power. Noting that downed power poles can be extremely dangerous, Foreman warned anyone who comes upon one to keep their distance and call 9-1-1. Parksville city council were scheduled on Monday night to consider a $100 fine for feeding deer within the city. The bylaw was requested as the first step in reviewing options to deal with the high number of deer in the urban area and the possible negative conflicts and effects.

Asked at a previous meeting how a feeding prohibition would be enforced, mayor Chris Burger said that hopefully having it on the books would put the message out there and begin addressing the problem. The report from staff to council says they don’t know exactly how many deer are in the area and that this would be a first step to establishing

the extent of the issue with a proper inventory and a public opinion survey on their perception. The report says habituation can lead to unsafe wildlife interactions, whether with people, pets or automobiles, and that there is property damage, mostly to plants, as well as the possibility of disease transmission.

Poplar Avenue zoning issue a hot topic editor@pqbnews.com

The owner of a property on Poplar Avenue in Qualicum Beach wants to rezone the land to allow for two evenly-sized lots. The change requires an amendment to allow for a reduction in the town’s minimum width of a lot. The proposal has neighbouriing residents concerned over the potential for new homes on those lots to be higher, therefore cutting off their ocean views — even though town staff recommend that any new house on the second lot created be limited to one story. Town councillor Bill Luchmeijer excused himself from discussions, declaring a conflict of interest (he said his campaign manager lives nearby). The rest of council deferred any decision to their March 12 meeting. • The Town will work with the Regional District of Nanaimo on creating a ‘Beach Day’ festival — the makeup of which will depend on the outcome of planning discussions. • The Town won’t build a new shelter for

Lobbying for pot

W

ith former attorneys general, ex-municipal mayors and a host of medical health officers all advocating for the legalization of marijuana, the public should start to wonder what politicians are smoking to make inaction seem like the right decision. Former B.C. Attorney General Geoff Plant and his colleagues are the latest to lobby the province for reforms to its marijuana laws by ending prohibition on B.C.’s unofficial cash crop. Like prohibition of alcohol during the Great Depression made millionaires out of bootleggers and gangsters, marijuana laws financially benefit both organized crime and petty criminals, while punishing taxpaying, law-abiding citizens for inhaling in the privacy of their homes. The framework for restriction, regulation and taxation of marijuana exists, through our extensive alcohol and tobacco legislation. Impairment laws currently apply to marijuana. The federal Conservative government wants to increase the minimum penalty for pot offences, yet B.C.’s court system faces such a backlog that the vast majority of those charges would be dismissed before ever reaching court. Legalizing – and regulating – marijuana would ease that court burden, erasing minor drug possession charges to free up court time for serious offences, such as drunk driving. It would also impact the international drug trade, which sees harder drugs cross the border in exchange for B.C. marijuana. Where the face of the argument for legalization was once a grungy, hippie-ish fellow sparking a spliff, the movement now has top medical professionals, former municipal leaders and provincial ministers cutting through the haze with a clean image and a clear-cut case. Letters It is a tad ironic that a Third Century Iranian prophet called Manes founded a religion which was around for a few centuries; Manichaeism was basically searching for a compromise between the forces of light and good against the forces of dark and evil. Not too much has changed in nearly two millennia, as we hear the drumbeat of war again in the Persian Gulf with Western powers teaming up against Iran and its alleged nuclear program. Canada’s Foreign Minister, John Baird was recently in Israel drawing comparisons between the regime in Iran and Hitler; never once did he mention the Jewish State’s own nuclear weaponry. Then, on Valentine’s Day Iran pre-empted a threat from the European Union, and cancelled contracts for daily shipments of crude oil to Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, France and Holland. The EU’s threat was to terminate existing contracts on July 1. Last week I received a map of Iran surrounded by countries such as Kuwait, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and countries across the Gulf like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman. In these countries were a total of 45 black dots, each denoting a U.S. military base. So who is threatening whom? History is full of false flag events, such as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident that led to the U.S. bombing of North Vietnam in 1964. We should all be highly skeptical of what politi-

PROBLEMS NEEDED The Conservatives have become a party of solutions in search of problems. And when problems can’t be found, they are made up. For example, crime rates in Canada are down. MP James Lunny says no they aren’t because unreported crimes are up, albeit marginally.Therefore, billions have to be spent on corrections to accommodate phantom criminals. A more recent example is the apparent plan by the Conservatives to increase the OAS retirement age from 65 to 67. Mr. Lunny, in his defense of the idea, uses worst case scenarios and neglects to mention any of the studies commissioned by his own government including that of the parliamentary budget officer. In fact, the effect on GDP will be .07 per cent. Apparently, then, the government’s priorities are to spend money on phantom criminals and to reduce funding for the next generation of seniors. This cynical attitude to policy-making is made much worse by Mr. Lunny’s message to current seniors not to worry because the cuts will only hurt their kids. ROBERT MUIR Parksville

t was a sweltering mid-summer day and I was stopped at a traffic light. The AC was on the fritz so I had all the car windows open. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have heard the cursing. It came from the car behind me and I could see the driver’s face in my mirror. It was deep magenta, his eyes were bulging, the veins in his neck standing out like sail shrouds. He was leaning toward his front passenger window, directing a Niagara of expletives at the people in the car alongside him. In that car sat a frail and elderly couple, frozen in fear, staring straight ahead. I don’t know the nature of the old folks’ driving infraction, real or imagined, but the berserker’s reaction was absurdly over the top. What made it extra ugly was the little boy sitting beside the driver — his son, presumably — also staring straight ahead. Nice lesson in civil discourse, Dad. Road rage. What a weird phenomenon. Where did it come from? Was there such a thing as horse-and-buggy rage? Roman chariot rage? Probably. Where there’s testosterone, there’s a way. The term, however, is only a few decades old, originating back in the 1980s as a description for a rash of car-to-car shootings that occurred on the freeways around Los Angeles. Road rage doesn’t always to involve firearms. It can manifest as verbal abuse, rude and menacing gestures or simple aggressive driving. Had a case of it myself, once, many years ago. A younger, stupider version of yours truly was tooling down Highway 401 north of Toronto. I blew by a middle-aged dawdler in a station wagon, not thinking much about it. A few seconds later, I looked over and there he was beside me, hunched over his steering wheel, driving fender to fender, determined to pass. Was I sensible? Did I hit the brakes and let him have his way, tut-tutting him with a mild

finger wave? I mentioned ‘younger and stupider’, right? I floored it; he floored it; I floored it some more. We both hurtled down the highway at probably twice the speed limit, both of us white-knuckling the wheel, determined that We’d Show That Jerk. Nothing calamitous happened. There were no rollovers, no caroming off the guardrails or wailing cop

sirens. My exit eventually came up and I took it. As my car and my heart slowed down in tandem I remember thinking: what the hell was that about? I still wonder. Why did the doofus in the station wagon feel he suddenly needed to risk his life to pass me? Why did I feel I had to risk my life to prevent him? That’s the scary thing about road rage: it makes no sense at all. Some drivers describe ‘a red mist’ swirling before their eyes and an overpowering urge to ‘get even’ at any cost. The typical road rager? Male. Single. Spotty education. Mid-level income. And of course, young. Usually under 35. Usually, but not always. Clyde White of Corbin, Kentucky recently ran afoul of the law. The cops finally collared him, but not until the conclusion of a chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour. And not before White had rammed two other cars with his own. One of the rammed cars was driven by his brother, aged 82; the other by his sister, aged 83. Clyde himself is 78. Proving that when it comes to road rage, it doesn’t matter if you’re young or old. Just as long as you’re stupid. — Arthur Black is a regular columnist with The News. He lives on Salt Spring Island

The owner-operator of the Borealis Hair Bar in Qualicum Beach is looking for a few good women who will surrender their hair to her stylists and be models for her annual cocktail party being held on Wednesday, February 29. Virginia Worcester is changing things up a bit for the annual hair and fashion show at the Thalassa Restaurant at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club. She said they will be modeling spring outfits from Close to You in Parksville and this year they will also style and cut hair during the show. Several models will have their hair coloured and styled in the salon and she said they will have four models get their locks cut during the event. “I have hired two new girls and I would like to introduce them to the community and show off their talents. Four of us will each do a different bob cut during the show.” The models must agree to get a complete make-over and Worcester is confident she will find people willing to make a major change.

iane Sharp has no problem rolling up her sleeves and getting her hands dirty. In fact, doing so is part of what, to her, makes a really good day. The results of that work, more likely than not, involves some really good, healthy food. The co-owner of Oceanside Edibles in Qualicum Beach with her husband, Bertrand Girard, she has been growing organic gardens since the late 1960s and when she drops by a client’s garden, she brings with her a strong background, both theoretical and practical, about the best ways to grow pure, healthy food. Her company, Oceanside Edibles, was launched in April of 2009 to share the joy of growing healthful, beautiful edible and ornamental gardens with the residents of not only Qualicum Beach, but Oceanside as a whole. “I got involved in gardening when I was a kid on Salt Spring Island,” she said. “There has always been a major food production issue for me. I like the taste better. I like the process of growing it.” Sharp said she is a follower of Jerome Rodale, the father of the organic movement, who in the 1920s popularized the growing of food without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and coining the term “organic.” A firm believer in the importance of giving back to her community, she kicked off that involvement in Qualicum Beach by sitting as a member of the Recreation and Parks Commission. “Out of that involvement I came to the conclusion or belief that the one thing this town was really lacking was a focus on healthy food production,” she said.

If you didn’t get an official invitation to Hollywood’s biggest event, the 84th Academy Awards but you want to walk the red carpet just like the A-Listers, the next best thing is the Oscar Party being held at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre (PCCC) Sunday, Feb. 26. Tickets for the elaborate extravaganza are $40 which includes authentic Oscar inspired cuisine, a live broadcast of the Oscars on a 24 foot screen, door prizes, Oscarthemed games and of course...a red carpet. Parksville councillor Carrie Powell-Davidson who is one of the organizers of the event said it will be the next best thing to being at the Kodak Theatre and much more affordable. “Everything they are doing in Hollywood we are doing here,” she stated. Wolfgang Puck is the official

chef of the Oscar dinner at the Governor’s Ball and Powell-Davidson said they will have food tasting stations throughout the venue that will pay homage to the nominees for Best Picture and will feature food representing each movie. She said members of the community have been requesting an event like this for a long time and they want to offer what she said will be the most glamorous event of the year. The Oscars can be a long drawn out affair and watching them at home can lack the pizzazz that a great party offers and PowellDavidson said they want to create the same buzz that is felt in tinsel town. The venue will be decorated with the glitz and glitter that Hollywood is famous for and people will be able to mingle freely at the party. “True to the style of the actual Governor’s Ball, our venue will be set up to schmooze.” See OSCARS, page A25

Qualicum Beach resident Mark Falvai has made it to the next round in Canada’s Handyman Challenge. That means the finalist on the national TV reality show can have at least one more fundraising party at home for Team iConquer which is

looking to raise $139,800 for the BC Cancer foundation. Falvai and his partner Joanne Simister are riders in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. On November 25, 2011 they lost one of their closest friends, Leon Little to brain cancer. Following his diagnosis in 2008, Little participated in

the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer two years in a row; his last ride was in 2011. Born and raised in Errington, Little was 38 years old when he died. There are 43 people on the team including Little’s twin brother Craig. Simister said although the two day cycling journey from Vancouver to Seattle —

which takes place on June 16 and 17 — is a huge commitment for their family, they want to honour their friend and take part in the ride. “It will be really healing for us … for all of us who loved Leon to be together for the weekend.” Falvai and Simister have been hosting parties at their home to watch each episode

of the HGTV show and their guests have been making a point to generously donate to Team iConquer. Simister said they have raised over $1,000 so far by holding the house parties, where people have been putting money into the official tool belt that Falvai wore on the show. Being the handyman that Falvai is, he constructed a giant box for the twins in order to keep them corralled. “Mark built a box for the babies. We have this enormous playpen in the house,� said Simister. She said Island Cycle in Parksville has also been very generous. “We are not road bikers and we had to buy road bikes. Bruce at Island Cycle has given us a fantastic deal.� She said although she and her husband are fairly active people, they know they have a big challenge ahead because they will be cycling for eight to nine hours a day during the event. “I will have a sore butt but it is worth it. I just got a call from a good friend, a young mom who was just diagnosed with breast cancer so there is no shortage of inspiration,� she said. Simister added that for those who would

Concession offers summer support

Quality Foods began as a single store in Qualicum Beach in 1982. Today, the chain of grocery stores employs nearly 1,000 people working in 11 stores on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. “We have had a remarkable thirty years of being an island-based independent grocer, and we are very excited about our continued growth KEN SCHLEY and innovation for the next thirty years,” Schley said. In recent years, the three partners have not only improved on their grocery store business, but have branched out into other areas, apart from the QF empire — including the purchase of the Old Dutch Inn in Qualicum Beach. They have also invested in other properties — including the site of the former Qualicum Beach Resort Hotel. Earlier this month, ICR Projects on behalf of the owner of the Parksville Shopping Centre, announced plans to build a new grocery store to house an expanded Save-On-Foods. Those plans are currently with the City of Parksville for approvals. The city is also home to another QF grocery store. “We have created a way to secure and invest in our future with B.C.’s most well-known and highly respect-

ed businessman, Mr. Jimmy Pattison,” said Schley at the company’s annual meeting last Thursday night. “We chose this direction to keep the integrity of the QF culture and philosophy that our people have built over the last thirty years,” added partner John Briuolo in a media release. Partner Noel Hayward added the addition of the new investor is a “great kick-start” to QF’s 30th anniversary year in 2012. “We are very fortunate to have found an investor that shares our strategic vision for the future,” stated Hayward. “This provides long term security and growth, which in turn creates opportunities.” In addition to the Pattison announcement, the QF ownership team said they will soon launch a new, fullyintegrated online shopping, app and social media web presence to an eagerly waiting customer base. New renovations for some of their existing stores are soon to be announced, and even some new stores in communities where they have yet to build. “All of this comes in a highly competitive time and market,” said Schley, “and we feel the future has never looked brighter for our company, our QF people and especially our loyal customers.” — NEWS Staff, with files from Neil Horner and Steven Heywood

The Beachside Grille, known as the Parksville Beach Concession, is looking to help community groups fundraise during busy days this summer. “When we applied to the city to operate the concession, we wanted to become involved in the community,” explained owner Barb Hooper. While they had a few non-profit groups take them up last summer, they are available throughout the summer, July through the September long weekend being the busiest. The concession will provide all of the equipment, product, set up and tear down of a tent. “We train the non-profit volunteers how to make cotton candy and then the group can pick a weekend and provide two to three volunteers during the peak hours of 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. “ She said they rent a fancy cotton candy machine that they don’t have the time to use at peak periods despite how big a seller it can be. They split the profits 50/50 and groups can earn several hundred dollars for a day’s volunteering. Interested community groups can contact Hooper at 250-752-4392.

The curtain is about to rise for a musical mash-up featuring some talented theatre students from Ballenas Secondary School. Opening night for the musical production of Into the Woods is one day away. According to theatre teacher Doug Campbell the musical has a novel plot and some big songs but his young thespians are are excited to present it at the Whalebone Theatre February 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and March 1. With music and lyrics by Steven Sondheim and a story by James Lapine, Into the Woods has intertwined the Young performers rising stories of various to the challenge. familiar fairy tales with an original story of a childless baker and his wife, who are the focus of the story by attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, ultimately creating a single even bigger fairy tale. The high school production is a family friendly musical for all ages and has numerous characters from familiar literature including: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame) and Rapunzel. The fairy-tale and fable characters from the woods are united and strive to get their wishes and deal with the consequences of those wishes. Campbell admitted it was a difficult show to take on but he is confident his young performers will rise to the challenge. The Whalebone Theatre production takes place at 7:30 p.m. on February 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and March 1. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and are available at the door. A family rate is also available.

He is predeceased by his ďŹ rst wife of 56 years Cecile (SommerďŹ eld) Born in Saint Hippolyte, Quebec . One of 11 children, Jim was brought up in a healthy Roman Catholic environment. Two of his sisters , Edna and Evelyn, belonged to religious orders, Evelyn in missionary work in Asia and Edna using her musical talents in various churches and seniors facilities in Montreal. At 18, Jim left home to join the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served for 7 years as an aircraft mechanic in Belleville, Comox and other Canadian locations. After completing his military service, he worked in the construction business building homes and in the hairdressing ďŹ eld where he was most successful. After moving to BC and having had no children from his previous marriage, Jim happily adopted his new life with Georgette and sons. Jim was a kind affectionate gentleman, loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his past and present families.

Kwalikum Secondary School’s senior girls basketball team is through to the Island finals for the second straight year thanks to a thrilling overtime win on home court Saturday morning. In action at ‘the Nest as hosts of the BC High School AA Sr. Girls North Island finals, the Kondors opened the tourney last Thursday and put themselves in a position to advance with a solid 51-39 win over the NDSS Islanders. Kwalikum led 11-5 after the first quarter and 29-8 at the half. NDSS battled back in the third to cut it to 39-28, but the Kondors finished them off in the fourth. Miranda Cuthbertson led the K-birds with a game-high 24 points, and Raini Bevilacqua fed the net for 15 — the two teammates shared player of the game honours. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly for Kwalikum in game two on Friday when they were thumped by the top-seeded Wellington Wildcats. The locals bounced back with their best game of the season Saturday and punched their ticket to the big Island dance with a gritty 57-52 win over the Mark Isfeld Ice in OT. The Ice led that one 13-8 after the first quarter and 23-18 after two, but the Kondors clawed back to take a 38-34 lead into the final frame. The two teams turned in a terrific 4th quarter and were deadlocked in a 47-47 tie after regulation to force a five-minute overtime period. See ISLAND GIRLS, page A33

Bring on the Panthers. Oceanside’s Save On Foods Generals lost their last two regular season games, but that was then and this is now the playoffs. In Saanich last Friday against the Braves with third place overall on the line, the short-benched Generals gave up three unanswered second period goals and lost 4-1. Back home Saturday against the first place Victoria Cougars for the league’s last regular season game, the Gens came up on the short end of a hard-fought 4-2 final. “We didn’t play very well Friday,” Gens’ GM and head coach Dave Johnston surmised, then made the point, “it’s such a different rink to play in — it’s really small ... they got one early; we don’t have a disallowed goal and a couple posts and it’s a different game.” The Generals were missing five regulars from the lineup. The Gens bounced back with a great effort in Saturday’s contest — another wide-open entertaining hockey game between two fast teams. “It was a good game,” agreed Johnston, adding, “I thought we played very well against the top-ranked team

in the province, and really, I believe it could have gone either way.” The two teams traded rushes early. The Generals had carried much of the play with time winding down in the first period and were in the midst of a sustained attack when the Cougars took it against the flow and scored with 27 seconds left in the frame. Taylor Gray (Dylan Haugen, Kyle Yamasaki) evened it up 48 seconds into the second period, and Victoria scored on the power play at 11:05 to go up 2-1 which is how it stood after 40 minutes. Victoria scored 57 seconds into the third with the man advantage, then added another at 8:56 to go up 4-1. Gray, who was named the games second star, potted his second of the night at 17:50, but that would be it. Victoria outshot Oceanside 29-22 on the night. Gens’ backup Joshua Alalouf was in net for the loss. The Generals finish VIJHL’s 42-game regular season sitting 4th overall in the seven team league, and the focus now is the post season. “Absolutley. The coach said the team of eight is anchored by three girls that have been playing since Grade 5, along with two other starters with a couple years’ experience, “and then we have three international girls that had never played the game before; so for us to make the Islands for the second straight year is a really big feather in their cap.” In other action, it was an emotional end to the season for the girls from Ballenas who battled hard but came up on the short end of a 3631 final to the NDSS Islanders. GAME ON The eight-team AA Sr. Girls Island Championships runs Thursday through Saturday at Wellington Secondary in Nanaimo with the top two teams advancing to the provincials. The third place team to play a wildcard game against a Mainland team. The K-birds will have their work cut out for them as they will likely open the tournament against No. 2 from the South St. Michael University School Blue Devils, currently ranked fourth in the province.

Ballenas curling team wins way to provincials JAMES CLARKE

You can add the name of another local curling team having a banner year. Punching their ticket to the BC High School Curling Championships in Dawson Creek, was the Ballenas team of skip Christine Patterson, third Emma Lamperson, second Emily Smith and lead Lauren McIntosh. Co-coaching the girls at regionals was Qualicum Beach’s Ann Fyfe, a longtime member of the Qualicum and District Curling Club. She said the girls honed their game curling in the local junior league as well as the Sunday night adult novice league. Fyfe has been helping guide the girls this year along with Irene Creally. Shelagh Lamperson has been helping the cause as team manager. The team was representing Ballenas Secondary School but two of the girls — Smith and McIntosh — are in Grade 8 and their final year at Oceanside Middle School. This is not the first time this district has sent a team to the regionals to compete, “but this is the first

time they’ve won the regionals,” said the coach. The 2012 BC High School regionals were played out at Juan de Fuca Curling Club Feb. 4-5. Fyfe said there were originally six teams scheduled but in the end only one other team showed up, and they made the trip from Powell River, which set the table for a best of three. The Whaler girls won their first game handily, and were leading the second game but ended up losing by one. In the third, the locals dominated. “Wonderful group of girls,” Fyfe said, and agreed, “it was exciting. The other team fought back and gave it their best, but our girls were just so strong.” Fyfe said she wasn’t surprised the girls did well. “They’ve been improving all year,” she said. “They’ve really been working hard, and it’s paying off.” The girls have been busy fundraising for their next trip and the local Rotary club has stepped up. For the second straight year a local team has clinched the BC Senior Women’s Curling Championship. In acton at the eight-team B.C. Senior Women’s playdowns in Kelowna Feb. 15-19, Parksville skip Penny Shantz and her team — third Debbie Jones-Walker, second Deborah Pulak and lead Shirley Wong — went 7-1 in round robin, their lone loss to Karen Lepine from Langley. “One bad end,” Shantz surmised when THE NEWS caught up with her. That record of 7-1 earned them first place overall and a bye straight though to Sunday’s championship game, which would end up being a winner-take all rematch against Lepine. Shantz scored two in the first end, and Lepine countered with one each in the second and third. Shantz scored two in the fourth, and Lepine countered with to of her own in the fifth for a 4-4 tie. The locals counted one in the sixth end to go up 5-4, but then their opponents counted four in the seventh to go up 8-5. “It didn’t look good there for a while,” Shantz chuckled, “but then we came back with four in the eighth end — she let us back in. “We all made our shots and just controlled the (eighth) end. I didn’t have to make any big shots, and I had an open hit for four,” Penny explained of the counter punch that put them up 9-8 with two ends remaining. In the ninth, Lepine was sitting three and Shantz hit and rolled to the button behind some guards to steal the end and go up two coming home without the hammer. Shantz said they froze to a rock in the back 12 foot to lie two, which took away any chance of Lepine scoring two and thus secured them the win.

“It was a crazy game ... we had really solid games all week, but that game all I can say is it was crazy. Back and forth, back and forth ... we were pretty excited to win.” Debbie Jones-Walker lives in Vancouver and as such the local team only played a couple of bonspiels together this year. Three weeks ago the team won the Sr. Women’s District playdowns in similar fashion. Shantz and Jones-Walker were teammates on the Canadian Women’s Olympic team that garnered gold at the Calgary Olympics in 1988 and have remained good friends. “We have a pretty successful record in the finals,” Shantz laughed, pointing out, “we haven’t lost yet.” It has been a busy month for Shantz, who was also the event chair of the BC Men’s Curling Championships held here in Parksville. Last year, longtime Qualicum Beach and District Curling Club member and mentor Lynne Noble and company (Lorraine Jeffries, Ellen Merriam, Lorraine Gagnon and Kristin Nickells) became the first team from these parts to win a Sr. Women’s provincial title. The 2012 Sr. Women’s Canadian Curling Championships is slated for March 15 to 25 in Abbotsford and will feature the country’s top 12 teams. In the meantime, Shantz and Wong are back on the ice in Qualicum Beach this weekend for a mixed bonspiel. The newly crowned B.C. champs, said Shantz, will be looking for a tuneup bonspiel in March, “preferably the weekend before (the nationals).” Shantz, said local curler Eileen Leachman, “is one remarkable woman — won regionals, chaired the men’s provincials and won the senior women’s provincials in a very short time.”

That sound you heard Saturday was the Whaler girls celebrating their new North Island title. Ballenas Secondary School’s Jr. Girls basketball team went 3-0 last weekend and locked up first place at their North Island playdowns to earn the best of four berths to the Islands. The blue and white opened the tourney with a 42-20 win over Vanier, then clipped the Ice from Mark Isfeld 42-37 in the semifinal. Brittany Britz led the Whalers with three 3-balls and a game-high 15 points. Chelsea Hoey added 12 and Chloe Dodd, 10. Against Alberni District Secondary School in the final on Saturday, the Whalers won handily, 51-36. Hoey had the hot hand that game, pouring in a game-high 20 points. Dodd dialled up 12 and Britz had 10. BSS teacher/coach Daryl Britz said, “overall our defence won us the championship.” He pointed to the outstanding defence of Megan Bell and Josie Jennett, “who always guard the other teams’ two best players.” There were no individual tournament honours handed out, but Britz made the point, “if we had an MVP it would have been Chelsea (Hoey) She was a dominating force on the boards averaging 18 rebounds a game.” Britz said going into the tournament “we were just hoping to qualify for the Islands because we just missed out last year by one spot. Also in the mix were the Kondors from Kwalikum Secondary School who won their district title on home court the week before. The two local teams never met at the North Islands, and the Kondors also advanced to the Islands by way of a fourth-place finish. GAME ON The Island finals are slated for Thursday through Saturday 23-25 at Mark Isfeld in Comox with the top two teams advancing to the B.C.s in Langley.

BSS boys still alive PARKSVILLE — Ballenas Secondary School’s senior boys basketball team lost their final two regular season games, but get another kick at the can on home court this Thursday in a wildcard game against the Alberni Armada to determine who goes to the North Islands — which starts the next day at Dover Bay in Nanaimo. Make the four-team North Islands and the boys from Ballenas will also punch their ticket to the Islands as all four teams advance — the North Islands are for seeding purposes. BSS guard Dustin Rodriguez has been injured and is recovering for playoffs. Tipoff for Thursday’s winner-take-all match — James Clarke is 5 p.m.

he 25th anniversary of The Old School House arts centre (TOSH) in Qualicum Beach is about to be celebrated in a huge way. The anniversary reception is Wed., Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. Executive Director Corrine James said it will be a reunion of sorts with past board members and artists who have been involved from the early days. To mark the occasion, an exhibition of collaborative work will be on display until March 16. It includes some paintings inspired by the work of 25 photographers. The photographers submitted their images to painters who then created a painting based on that photograph. A Night at the Silent Movies, Sat., Feb. 25, is sold out but another silent movie night has been scheduled for April 15. The movies, starring Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, will be accompanied by classical pianist Bruce Vogt. Tickets are $18 and include refreshments. A special concert for Music on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2:30, will feature, Musica Intima, an eight-voice vocal chamber ensemble. James said there is a rich history to celebrate at TOSH. She said Brad Wylie’s History of The Old School House has a detailed account of how it all started. In 1987 the Arts Council notified the town council that its board of directors had decided not to proceed further with its efforts to renovate and lease the old school board building. Al Greir, an alderman at the time and the president of the chamber of commerce, launched a campaign to save the building. The chamber held a special meeting to consider sponsor-

ing and raising the estimated $150,000. They decided to hold a public meeting to determine the community’s interest in saving the building and converting it into a cultural and art centre. Then the fundraising began and TOSH was the first art gallery in B.C. to be awarded charity status. The first Garden Party and Art Auction was held at the estate of Veronica Milner, now called Milner Gardens. Tom McIver was recruited to ready the grounds for the event. 200 tickets at $100 each were sold and 30 pieces of art were auctioned off. The event made over $23,000. When the restoration to the building began in July, 1987, it was quickly realized that the job was huge. McIver agreed to supervise the con-

struction and enlisted the help of the Brannen Lake Prison for a supply of 10 men, five days a week. There are wonderful stories about the renovations and the many volunteers and businesses that helped along the way. The planning committee became the founding board and The Old School House opened on Feb. 27, 1988. At the opening, Greir stated “the $183,000 renovation costs had all been paid without a penny from local taxes.” McIver called the project “symbolic of volunteer effort.” Copies of Brad Wylie’s history will be made available during the 25th anniversary celebrations to anyone interested reading the details.
