Laryngeal chondritis is a condition that occurs in both cattle and sheep and has a higher prevalence in double muscled breeds such as Belgian Blues and Beltex. The larynx is at the top of the windpipe and has two main functions. It contains the vocal folds, which produces the animal's 'voice', and closes over when the animal swallows to stop food going down the wrong way. It is made of flexible cartilage with a membrane lining. Unfortunately cartilage has a poor blood supply and this means that infections can be difficult to control as there are few white blood cells to help destroy bacteria and antibiotics may be in low concentration. Any insult to the larynx

can result in deep infections that track into the cartilage causing swelling and pus production. This causes the inside of the larynx to close reducing the air that can be breathed in. It can also result in a marked roaring noise as the animal tries to breath in and out through a narrowed airway. In mild cases treatment can be attempted with antibiotics and steroid injections. These may have to be repeated on one or more occasion to resolve the problem and the animal may be left with some permanent damage. Severe cases may reduce growth and can even be life threatening. In these cases it may be necessary to insert a tracheostomy tube in the windpipe to allow the animal to breathe by-passing the larynx.
