USA today Listed Branson As one Of The Greatest Places to Retire!! Ozarks News Area folks looking for a place to retire have a hidden gem of an option right in their own backyard. USA Today listed Branson as one of five great places to retire that probably aren’t on most people’s retirement radar.

Lund said another attractive feature was that his property taxes, annual golf fee and annual homeowner’s association fee is less than he paid in property taxes on a smaller home in Minnesota. “And of course we got away from the cold Minnesota winters,” he added.

Branson was fifth on the list, falling in behind Hendersonville, N.C.; St. Augustine, Fla.; King of Prussia, Pa. and College Station, Texas.

Shannon Duvall, president of the Tri-Lakes Board of Realtors, was happy that Branson is being recognized as a place to retire.

USA Today included comments from Where to Retire editor Annette Fuller, who cited “low cost of living and housing, a favorable tax situation, a low crime rate, an active downtown, good medical facilities and ... a range of activities” as traits sought by retirees.

However, it does not surprise her. She said approximately 80 percent of her business comes from those who are retiring.

“Some hidden-in-plain-view cities like Branson, Mo., are popular, as the retirees become Branson ‘insiders’ and watch the tourists come and go, living alongside three gorgeous, peaceful lakes,” said Fuller. Fuller also mentioned Mountain Home, Ark. — less than two hours from Branson — as a popular off-thebeaten-path retirement community, although it was not included in USA Today’s list. Loren Lund and his wife, Patti, retired to the Stonebridge golf resort subdivision just outside Branson in 2006. They moved from Minnesota’s Twin Cities where he was an accountant. They decided to retire to Branson after vacationing there several times. “We loved the shows,” Lund said. “I always wanted to live on a golf course and the property values were 50 percent what they were in Minnesota.” July 1, 2013

“It’s either a second home that people plan to retire to, or it’s people looking for a place to retire,” she said. She said many of those people are like the Lunds: former Branson vacationers. She said the hospital, CoxHealth Branson, is also a selling point for retirees, as are the area’s three lakes. “A lot of buyers start off wanting close proximity to the water,” she said. She said most of those retiring to the Branson area come from other states, particularly Iowa, Illinois and Texas.
