editor’s note
If you’re scratching your head at the equation above and wondering what kind of math I use in my world, I’ll admit it – I’m using creative math. VERY creative math, the kind of numbers that are generated by some terrifically talented women who come together and create a special issue like this one. Our 6 Paper Crafts Go-to Gals each created 11 sketches, and then we added 60 other contributors who went to work and came up with the 282 project designs using those sketches. We’re absolutely delighted with the outcome, and know this issue will become a resource you use again and again. Each Go-to Gal hosts a chapter, and shares a little bit about herself so you can get to know her better. For me, the journey of getting to know them has been punctuated with energy, laughter, creativity, and even some hard work in between. You can only imagine what it was like to get this exuberant bunch together for a group shot, hoping only to get everyone looking at the camera all at the same time. Teri´s Go-to Sketches Hello friends. My name is Teri and I must admit that good design makes me giddy! I’ve been paper crafting since I was a kid and I love it even more today than I did yesterday. Long before my time as a Go-to Gal, I turned to sketches to help boost my creative energy and springboard new ideas. I’m crossing my fingers that this chapter of sketches, created by me for you, will help you stretch your own style and see your designs in a whole new, fabulous light. Maren´s Go-to Sketches I guess you could say I’m the new girl on the block. Like many of you, I’ve only been paper crafting for a few years. Throughout this time I’ve learned to rely on sketches to help me quickly focus my overall design so I have more time for the fun stuff–the product! Sometimes I’m in the mood for a detailed card with lots of layers and other times I prefer more simplicity. This is why my sketches are basic and leave lots of room for interpretation. So no matter your mood or your skill level (that’s a shout-out to my fellow newbies), I’m confident you’ll find something in this chapter that will light your fire and have you designing like a pro in no time!

CHAPTER 3:
Kim H.´s Go-to Sketches Starbucks…check. Scissors…check. Sketches… double check. Hey everyone, I’m Kim and I’m obsessed with two things: list making and paper crafting. Although I’ve been playing with paper for nearly a decade I still need my essentials close at hand. The coffee keeps me energized, the scissors are for fussy cutting, and the sketches are my way of taking the guesswork out of design. When I have a sketch all I need to do is select my paper, sentiment, and accents, and I can have a super cute card in no time. I love shaped cards so I made sure my sketches had lots of fun patterns, pull-outs, and pop-ups. If you’ve never experimented with these in the past you might end up with a new obsession and you can blame it all on me!

CHAPTER 4:
Kim K.´s Go-to Sketches As a mother of eight and a half (baby number nine is due in July) I’ve been known to suffer from memory loss, brain cramps, and even crafter’s block! I haven’t found a cure for the first two, but I have figured out the best way to beat crafter’s block. Using a sketch lets me skip the design phase and get right to the paper and glue (which really is the best part, right?). I love designs that have strong lines and a sense of humor so I tried to incorporate these elements into my own sketches. These are meant to be easy to use and more than anything else, FUN! So turn on some Disney tunes (my favorite music to paper craft to) and let the crafting begin!

Betsy´s Go-to Sketches Can I just say how excited I am to be designing sketches for all of you?! I’ve been paper crafting for years and I’m still blown away by the endless inspiration I get from readers like you. While our styles are all different (I love girly layers and details) I think we all can agree on the importance of sketches. These simple outlines help take a design challenge and transform it into a chance to express ourselves with ribbon, lace, and buttons (there I go with the girly details again). I adored designing the sketches in this chapter and I hope you enjoy playing with them as much as I did!

CHAPTER 6:
Jessica´s Go-to Sketches Hey y’all, this is Jessica. I’m from Texas and yes, I say “y’all." Do you ever over-think a card long before you begin cutting the cardstock? If so, you’re not alone. I must have a plan before I start crafting, and finalizing that plan can often take too much time. This is why I’ve fallen in love with sketches. They provide me with the design which means I have one less thing to think about! As I was working on the sketches for this chapter I tried to design things I knew my friends and I would like. Most of my sketches have lots of white space which means there aren’t as many elements to stress about. Instead, you’ll end up with a beautiful stack of cards that follow my mantra of, “less is more."
