Since the beginning of the Industrial Age, Americans have idealized the journey towards economic success. One thing people do not realize, however, is that that journey is not the same for every individual. For Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), the main character of Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles, the path towards riches and a fulfilled life is being well liked. He serves to please others. He strives for that attention. This view cost him his happiness in the end. In this man's rise and fall through prosperity, Welles shows the futility of striving solely for likeability.

The movie starts out in Kane's childhood home, before his life changed forever. His family is visited by a rich bank owner named Jerry Thompson (William...show more content... He does not care to bring honesty to the people, as he insists when he first comes into owning the newspaper. He wants to control people, to gain massive influence.

This wish for control is also seen in his love life. His first wife is Emily Monroe Norton (Ruth Warrick), the niece of the current President of the United States. This connection itself gives Kane more power, even an opportunity to become governor. One can even say that is only reason he marries her: for influence, not love. When Emily starts to realize this, their marriage continually deteriorates until they are hardly speaking at all. Kane's second love interest is Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore). The first time they met, he proceeds to control her. He insists that she sing professionally, even when she argues against it. Their relationship is uncovered, causing Emily to get a divorce. Kane marries Susan soon after. However, it is the same cycle over again. He tries to control everything, she gets annoyed, the marriage deteriorates. After he builds Xanadu, the palace, she is so fed up that she leaves him as well. His desperation for attention and control costs him a family. Citizen Kane shows why one should not wish for attention and influence alone. If one tries to take full control of their life, it will go out of control. It is happiness and being content with life that is important. If that includes backpacking across the world, then that is that. If it includes making a

Whiplash Film Analysis

Damien Chazelle's critically acclaimed American drama film Whiplash (2014), presents a thought–provoking and confronting depiction of volatile and manipulative relationships, in which Andrew Niemen, a young ambitious jazz drummer is pushed to the brink of his ability and sanity by his ruthless teacher, Terence Fletcher. Nieman's passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into an obsession. Whiplash proving highly popular with audiences utilizes cinematography to explore the central themes, the battle between being a good person and being remembered and the effects of a volatile and manipulative student–teacher relationship. Whiplash utilizes conventions and ideas from the drama genre to communicate these central themes and film...show more content...

However, now Neiman's gradual spiral into an obsession for greatness has driven him to breaking point. The carcrash scene is the turning point in Nieman's character. His pursuit of perfection and greatness has blinded him. At this point Neiman has lost his old self completely, his dialogue is arrogant and hostile, he no longer cares for his band members or anything apart from greatness. His gradual change of behaviour is evident through his dialogue 1:03:28 when Nieman is on the telephone to one of his band members, he starts cursing and using profane language, similarly to Fletcher. Drumming has become his life, he is no longer concentrated on being a good person instead he is focused on being remembered, as demonstrated after the car accident, Nieman is determined to succeed and please Fletcher, thus continuing to play. As he plays every excruciating beat, his blood drips onto the drum set; representing the pain that he is willing to go to achieve success. Neiman's madness is stopped by Fletcher's two words: "You're done". Along with lighting and dialogue, the volatile and manipulative relationship between Fletcher and Nieman is explored through Chazelles use of cinematography. Music, editing, and camera angles are used by Chazelle to explore the effects of a volatile and manipulative student–teacher relationship. The cinematography and music used throughout the scene intensify the volatile relationship

My Love Affair with Fashion

My love affair with fashion started years ago, but over these past 2 years it has grown into something so beautiful. Fashion made it's grand entrance in my life when I was looking over a Chanel catalog along with a few other designers. For example; Vera Wang, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo, and many more. The designs caught my eye and I was just mesmerized by it all. It literally took my breath away! I always told myself and my family that I will grow to be an amazing fashion designer and sell beautiful, elegant clothing known to man. A worldwide known designer. The day I opened that catalog was the day that my mind went into a world win spiral. So many ideas...show more content...

What appealed me most about fashion design and product development is the concept, in my eyes fashion is "walking art", it is a mixture of the oldest fashion to today's latest trends. I love the fact that I can be so diverse and creative with my designs. Adding a new piece, changing the color or even making something that hasn't even be thought of. I love being different, having out of the box, off the all ideas. I love making beautiful clothes and mix matching clothes together. I'm also going to double my major with Business management. the reason why I'm deciding to do that is because I've always wanted to own my own business and to be my own boss, it's a big dream of mine. I read into the course and what it has to offer me and it was so direct and straight to the point, teaching you everything you need to know before getting into the industry. What really stood out to me is the 95% rate of the business management graduates that found a job right after graduation. To me that's amazing! It's also another big reason why I decided to double my major. If you thought this was handful, then wait till you hear this! As you can see in my 3rd paragraph I mentioned something about opening my own store, which is a goal of mine after graduating from FIDM. Not only do I want to open my own store but spread my unique style around the world. I would love to open stores in places like Paris, Milan, Spain and many more. Like I said WORLD WIDE FASHION

Film Techniques In The Great Gatsby

The film that made an impression on me because of its techniques was The Great Gatsby. The director, Baz Luhrmann presents certain themes and ideas for the viewers. To do this, Baz Luhrmann proficiently uses a range of techniques to demonstrate these ideas. The Great Gatsby is about a man who orders his life around one desire: to be reunited with Daisy, the love he lost five years earlier. Gatsby's quest leads him from poverty to wealth, into the arms of his beloved, and eventually to death. The techniques I write about that illustrate the themes of the film are; camera shots, setting, lighting and symbolism. The scenes I will be concentrating on are the final scenes which feature the Great Gatsby.

In this scene Gatsby was waiting for a very important phone call from Daisy. The camera shots showed a close up of Gatsby's calm face, it cuts straight into a crane shot where a variety of features come in, as you can see the dirty edges of the pool, leaves in the water and his security guard standing at the edge of the pool. A shadow of a man with...show more content...

I found when watching this part that lighting was an essential element to portray the mood the director is trying to express. At the beginning of the scene it cuts into a long shot of Gatsby's house overlooking the gloomy lake. From the long shot it immediately goes into a panning shot, a scatter of lights appear on the inside of the house. This gives the viewers a sense of desolation to the house. Gatsby use to throw massive parties with lights that would light up the whole lake which made the house look alive. But the few lights in this shot made it look partly abandoned and uninviting. I think that the director deliberately made the scene dark to exaggerate to the audience loss of all personality and happiness, which has disappeared from the house. The house was once full of light but now it is

FIDM Hearing Case Study

There are several ways I knew I was happy when I got accepted into FIDM. The first reason is because I was relieved that the application process was over. I changed majors which I had to complete two entrance projects, it was a relief to know that I was done completing both of them. Finishing filling out all of the forms was also another relief that all the stages were completed. The second reason was that my life path was finally confirmed. Playing guessing games were a thing of the past now that I had figured out what I wanted to major in. Being able to find a meaning in life was weight lifted off of my shoulders. The final reason why it was such a relief was knowing my only choice for college was a success. I didn't apply to any other schools

Why I Get Accepted Into FIDM

I am filling out the Federal Financial Aid Suspension Appeal in regards to personal reasons I endured during the Fall of 2006 and the Spring of 2010 semesters. In 2006, I regret to say that I was not fully prepared to take on the responsibility of going to school full time. I did not have the proper resources to be successful. During the fall of 2006, I lacked a reliable vehicle and was unable to get transportation to and from school. This greatly affected my ambition to further my education and drove me to concentrate on working full time and taking care of my financial obligations. I soon found myself with a great job at Cessna and began the procedure in purchasing a home. This time around I have more real life experience that prepares me for those challenging situations that can come around the corner. I have learned how to push forward instead of back out. FIDM Personal Statement

Medium Specificity Essay

According to Clement Greenberg, an American essayist, "medium specificity holds that 'the unique and proper area of competence' for a form of art matches the ability of an artist to manipulate those features that are 'unique to nature' of a particular medium." It implies that if the notion that the medium consists to bring artwork into life is accomplished, then the artwork is said to be successful. Medium specificity refers to unique qualities of films, compared to other mediums of artistic expressions; for example, a drama, stage play, theater, or melodrama. The purpose of this essay is to determine the value and implications of medium specificity. Over the past hundred years, the Pathfinders have improved the morphology of cinema by diving into the unchartered boundary. Any normal person who owns a television today is familiar with the languages and basic techniques of cinema without even realizing it. Andre Bazin is one of those pathfinders who developed the language; he is a renowned film critic. But, as the time passed and different areas of art evolved, so did the photography and painting evolved into a more established form, which is cinema. According to Bazin, each step towards the more refined form of cinema is a step towards realism. Whereas, Noel Carroll writes in the introduction of "Theorizing the Moving Image", "Film interpretation is a form of film appreciation, in the first instance, and then a guide to others about the ways in which they too can come

Film as the Most Important Art Form of the Twentieth Century

The use of film and its explorations have progressed steadily since the 1800's and as our title suggests, it has become an important art form and a huge influence on society today. Influencing the way we live, the way we speak, the way we act and more. There isn't an art form closer to representing 'reality'; this is why film has such an affect on all of us!

The first 'image of motion' created was in 1873 when Eadweard Muybridge, an English photographer used a series of cameras placed along a racetrack to capture the movement of a galloping horse. Muybridge then moved a step closer to the existence of film when he invented The...show more content...

As these camera's can offer what is considered as 'advanced' today, the many film directors now take full advantage and a modern film is often based around its use and level of special effects and stunts. These directors are given the opportunity to take everyday life activities and add to them in the most exciting or surreal ways possible! As viewers, we can relate to these scenes but the additional, experimental effects cause our minds to expand and think into more depth about our daily experiences. This is how film today in the Twentieth Century can be argued to be the most important art form.

No matter how it is done, art has always represented something or someone from our lives today, in the past or even in the future. Paintings and photography for example portray still image, whereas film and theatre works through conveying image, sound and movement! It could be argued that therefore theatre can be just as important as film, though theatre arts cannot be multiplied and spread worldwide as efficiently as film, film has a greater effect on a wider and less precise audience as it can be viewed by anyone in the world at any time providing it has the right support, funding and facilities! I am sure that more people can relate to film than any other art form as it is usually a

Ideologies refer to a certain belief system that an individual, group or society has, a system which is driven by values and principles (Kellner 1991; Hughes 2017). It can be argued that since every film presents a way of acting, either positive or negative, in a certain circumstance, it explicitly or implicitly articulates an ideology. Just as everyone has their own sense of right or wrong so does the filmmaker. The film therefore is a subjective representation of the world. According to Comolli and Narboni's famous essay (2004), they state that "every film is political, inasmuch as it is determined by the ideology which produces it (or within which it is produced, which stems from the same thing)". That is film produces the reality. When films allow, challenge or reject certain aspects of ideology, the response to the ideology can be personal or general, both with respect to understanding the images and characters within the stories, and the filmmaker's attitude whether to change the existing power relations in the society (Comolli and Narboni 2004). Film makers deliberately broadcast political ideology in film, but more frequently shield it. To help us explore how film represents its ideological constitution, a number of classifications might be useful as introduced by Comolli and Narboni (2004): (a) ideological conventional films; (b) films that attack political ideology; (c) films that attack dominant ideology, but being apparently political; (d) films with explicitly Get more content

I observed and analyzed the design and delivery of an instructional unit in a Montessori school setting. When I first entered the classroom the atmosphere was very inviting and comfortable unlike most classrooms I enter for my own classes. There are three teachers in the classroom, one does reading/lesson circle with a small group of students, another does arts and crafts, and one of them circulates throughout the room helping students with their work–plans. The teacher that circulates around the room all the time appears to be the head teacher and when a conflict arises she is the one to mediate it. The way that the teachers speak with the children is as if they are equals, they aren't talked down to and the students give the teachers complete respect.

All of the teachers are confident in the content they are teaching and always have an answer for the questions the children have. The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film, Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ© of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help, creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity, as well as numerous sociological concepts including segregation, internalized oppression, and white privilege, which will be exemplified in this paper in order to uncover the race relations evident within this film.

Critical Analysis Of Shrek

`Shrek' is the ultimate fractured fairy tale, a film that manages to simultaneously honor and lampoon the conventions of its genre without becoming smug or condescending in the process. For while it is sardonic, `Shrek' is never cynical, so confident and assured are its makers in establishing and maintaining just the right tone for a revisionist exercise such as this one. The film certainly conveys a modern sensibility, yet it is a gentle sort of iconoclasm that allows us to enjoy the more conventional aspects of the story (the happily–ever–after ending, for example) even as we are laughing at the obvious absurdities contained within them.

The revisionism begins with Shrek himself, as unromantic a figure as has ever earned the title of `hero' in a fairy tale adventure. For Shrek is an ogre, plain and simple, an ugly, cranky, decidedly standoffish beast who wants nothing more than to rid his swamp of all the classic fairy tale figures (Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears, The Three Blind Mice et al), who have been consigned there by the dastardly Lord Farquaad, who is attempting to purge his land of all those bothersome folkloric personalities. To earn the deed to his land and thereby have authority to evict the squatters, Shrek agrees to go in search of the beautiful Princess Fiona, rescue her from her dragon–guarded castle, and bring her back for Lord Farquaad to marry (thereby earning the latter the legitimate title of Prince of the Land). It is stated that global growth and development has increased by 3.3% in 2015. The findings are less than the calculated 6.1% documented for the previous year. In total, in 2013, over 130 billion dollars have been contributed to development in specifically, developing countries and countries far below the poverty line. Many countries maybe facing their internal financial issues, but the funding towards developmental assistance has increased. This paper is focused to investigate if foreign aid is in fact assisting the appropriate and relevant subjects. To demonstrate the effect of foreign aid on developing countries, data has been used from developing countries on different continents, such as sub–Saharan Africa, and Asia. The correlation between the net ODA (officialdevelopment assistance) given and the GDP (gross domestic product) is not significant, even though the coefficients between the FDI (foreign direct investment) and the GDP establish a positive correlation. Developing countries are advised to keep their savings rate low, and not attempt at utilizing policies in order to grow their economies alone according to the current aid policies towards foreign aid. Foreign aid is meant to help and truly assist developing countries to reach out of their poverty line and grow their economies. After analyzing the countries, the aid received, it will be evidently shown that foreign aid does not help the underdeveloped and poverty poisoned countries.

Macbeth Film Review

In the 2010 film adaptation of the tragedy Macbeth, Robert Gould – the director – takes a spin on the Shakespearean play and switches up the setting to add character to the film. While changing the historical setting is bold and risky, it alludes to a bigger theme: history repeating itself. In a sense there is a comparison of power struggles during the 11th century and early 1940s. It is not hard to make these connections within the 180 minutes of the film but some scenes tend to be slow and repetitive of the message being given. Power is one of the biggest sources of conflict in the film, as Macbeth (played by the talented Patrick Stewart) is continuously trying to protect his claim to the throne. Macbeth is clearly compared to Stalin when he goes on a hiatus for power.

The opening science presents viewers with the implementation that war is occurring and a traitor has been caught. The three nurse, who we later find out represent the three witches, went on to give Macbeth and Banquo (Martin Turner) a prophecy. Macbeth then goes on a quest to fulfill that prophesy with the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Kate Fleetwood). As he double crosses the people closest to him, he learns that it is not easy to have so much power. Thus, throughout the course of the movie, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are challenged by others around them– or so they think. But as you know, this is a tragedy, meaning nothing good can possibly come out of this film. Before watching this film, you should know that it takes places underground for majority of the film. Maybe the director meant for this to be symbolic but it is hard to tell. For example, in one scene there is a sink in the middle of a hallway. Nothing else, just a sink. This is where I questioned if they had the budget to make this film spectacular. But I would think a PBS production would have brought more character to the setting.
