013 is rich in novelties for Paoul. Not just for company image - amply refreshed in many aspects (logo, product lines, packaging) - but also the launch of the 2013 Dance Collection, really successful with dance fans, professionals and amateurs. The 2013 Collection colours range, sober and timeless,

through neutral nuances: for Paoul the shoe speaks for itself and small details make it precious in a balanced way. Shoes become an impeccable detail completing the dancers attire: decided, essential lines standing out for elegance. Plus lively touches of colour and refined femininity in many

Paoul products; especially those dedicated to tango: electrifying nuances like green and blue, yellow suede, shiny patent bows and sparkling details. The Paoul woman is strong yet sensitive, loves both good taste and comfort. continues on page.4

Special thanks go to Paolo Pizzocaro, farsighted innovator and man of great passions, without whom nothing of all this would have been possible.

From 1967 till now: always to the sound of music.

T

he Paoul story has lasted 45 years now. In 1967, its founder, Paolo Pizzocaro, decided to become a craftsman. The company, at first in two small rooms where the Pizzocaro family lived, and where, in that same space, work was done with just a few machines, later moved to a shed, a large structure for PA O U L . C O M

the times. In the evening you went dancing and people asked Paolo to make them a pair of dance shoes. That is where the Paoul brand came from: a small craftsman’s desire to make a unique, all Italian product. A heritage of knowledge in the “art of doing», always with an innovative vision of the product

now distributed in Italy, most of Europe, North America, Japan and China. Paoul shoes are unique in care over detail, processes and choice of raw materials and each shoe is designed, produced and packed in the Italian company with dedication and great skill. Now managed by Maria Teresa, Cinzia and Katia Pizzocaro,

respectively chief executive officer, stylist and chief financial officer of the Paduan company, and dedicated to all dance lovers, amateurs and professionals, Paoul is at the centre of a creative wave. For more and more captivating, unique products, guaranteeing exceptional performance.

T

he strength of this new Line lies in a meticulous search for accessories to embellish shoes; its originality culminating, for example, in art. 675, with an interchangeable broach to satisfy the discretion and taste of those wearing them. Then, new shapes for a sophisticated yet comfortable style: two styles called “cuccarini, heels 70/80 and 90/100, with a rounded toe and greater comfort; shape 173 for heel 100 sandals with small uppers, wider at the sole and lower on toes; then, for model 129, a shape for a heel 80 sandal, dedicated to Latin American dancers and designed to hold a squarer, wider insole, and lower on toes. The passwords for this 2013 were, and are expected to be so for 2014 too, captivating, modern look, ergonomic design and comfort, innovative technical solutions and high-level product performance. To confirm excellence, Paoul chooses to enhance its shoes by giving them important dance world names, from highly

Paoul wants to seal such important occasions with the Wedding & Gala Collection, created thanks to pluses like extreme comfort, meticulous craftsmanship, the search for extraordinary materials and maximum possibility to customise in terms of colour, materials and heel height. The experience acquired in over 45 years creating original, precious dance footwear – now worn by the greatest dance professionals – has enabled Paoul to transfer a product’s high quality and performance pluses to shoes to be worn off the dance floor. Not just for the bride, the groom, but also for best men and guests, pages and bridesmaids, or for exclusive events to be crowned by a glamorous, elegant look.

nalysing the catwalks of the main brands producing clothes for the bride and groom, in 2013/14, the traditional white wedding dress is flanked by the glamour of colours worn by the wedding protagonist, going from pastel to the brightest shades. The pacesetter was the collection signed Vera Wang, one of the queens in the bride segment, with models in fire- red and amaranth, with slimline heart-shaped bodices, bubbly skirts, or sensual siren lines. Oscar de la Renta plays with shades of bordeaux matched

with floral white accessories, for a Renaissance bride. The colour of love and passion, red fills the catwalks of Dalin and Alessandro Couture too, thanks to small Swarovski applications, delicate lace embroidery or sober floral elements, to adorn more classic outfits, livening up the candour of white dresses, elegant models for a princess. The groom, alongside such a lively, bubbly bride, does his bit wearing half a morning suit or a red one, much appreciated in the Carlo Pignatelli shows.

10 - BEHIND THE SCENES

pao u l ga z ette - N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 3

“I love dance because it allowed me to meet Paolo.”

di Paoul Press Office photography Buildidea Group

The INTERVIEW: Behind the scenes. Maria Teresa De Antoni in Pizzocaro, CEO of Paoul, tells us her story, closely tied to that of the company. Maria Teresa is a concrete woman with elegant aplomb. She is not just an entrepreneur, but an affectionate mother managing Paoul, the family company, with her two daughters, Katia and Cinzia. After the early demise of Paolo Pizzocaro, husband and founder of what is now one of the most famous international dance shoe brands. Maria Teresa was born in France, of an Italian family who had moved to the land of good living and then decided to return to Italy when she was 10. It was in a dance hall - destiny - that she met Paolo. She was 19 and it was love at first sight. Another 5 went by and Maria Teresa and Paolo got married and started working on the business Paolo had started just a few years earlier together. She handled administration. He was the ”artistcraftsman”. 45 years have gone by since your husband PA O U L . C O M

started the company, first as a craftsman and then as entrepreneur and innovator. Now the Paoul brand, sold the world over, is run by your daughters, Katia and Cinzia, and you, naturally. What do you do? I supervise activities in the different areas. I work with my daughter, Katia, for what concerns company administration and with Cinzia, the designer, on the production department. I check that collaborator tasks are carried out correctly. In particular, I control product quality and full customer satisfaction through the right solution for all needs. How do you see this generational change? Was, or is it, difficult? At first, it was not too easy as each member of our family has a strong personality and supports its ideas with zeal. With my husband, Paolo, we tried to balance our

experience, a guarantee for maintaining a tidy, safe path, with our daughters wanting innovation and dynamism. We agreed to launch a company computerisation process in the production department, that is control of how the work stages for each pair being produced are progressing; to keep the client informed in real time of the product delivery date. We also recently agreed to review our image and invest in a new way of communicating. The company has grown a lot over the decades, maintaining its craft spirit but introducing a lot of the product management and processing technologies. Has the typical Paoul customer changed too evolving over time? The Paoul customer is showing growing attention for detail. And that is why our choice of new resellers

has become more and more careful to associate a prestigious brand with just as gratifying a service. Nowadays, our customers want to make that dream, often called “utopia” by companies operating economies of scale with a mass product, come true: that is customisation, strongly present in our ideal crafts company, acknowledged by the Veneto Region for the artistic-traditional trades sector. Paoul was set up as company producing dance shoes. However, you have recently added a line dedicated to weddings and events (Wedding & Gala), one for the theatre (Theatre) and a highly exclusive Tailored Line for those wanting you to make a unique item that has never been mass produced. How did this product evolution come about? Through your visions and wishes or due to market demands?

pao u l ga z ette - N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 3

BEHIND THE SCENES - 11

Dance shoes have always been our core business. Whereas shoes for ceremonies came from our intuition and from wishes expressed by dancer customers who wanted to spend the happiest day of their lives in absolute comfort. we have always had a THEATRE line because of my husband’s passion for creating, whilst respecting styles and customs from the different historical periods. In collaboration with the best master craftsmen of Venetian period costumes, he created special products which were exported all over the world. The TAILORED Line project is still evolving. We really believe in it. Giving us the opportunity to create a unique item starting from a customer’s idea. An exciting gamble! Three words describing the Paoul style. Elegant, refined, substantial. Which are your most important markets? Naturally, Paoul is present in Italy but has been exporting to Europe and outside the EU for years now. In 2012 we exported almost 50% of our

turnover. What goals have you got for yourself and your company in the near future? I want to see the project my husband created with so much love, that our family is carrying forward, continue. We are proud to export the Made in Italy trade mark with great dignity and obtain important acknowledgement of our work from all over the world. Which product made are you the most proud of? There is no single product I love most as each creation is a great gamble for us! If you were given the chance, which dancer, actor/actress or famous person would you like to use your shoes? No specific name comes to mind at present. I am satisfied with the appreciation received from lots of show business people and hope that the future will bring us more lovely surprises! Maria Teresa...can you dance? I like dancing, as an amateur. I love dance because it allowed me to meet Paolo.

ONCE UPON A TIME...

Some people think some colours are taboo. Red is one of those, often labelled as being “too strong”. On the wave of the most famous cinema remakes of fairy tale characters, our idea of red contradicts the most sceptical. The result is that those wearing them feel like the protagonists of their own fairy tale.

aoul has always been doubly tied to the show business world: prose, opera, cinema, TV and any art form in general. Originally with the traditionally Italian show of that “tragic-comic Pirandello” theatre - especially thanks to the company’s geographic location, thus its cultural origins - to grow in recent years in the production of shoes created specifically for musicals and TV shows, cinema productions and exclusive events. Let’s not forget Zelig, the Italian comedy programme produced by Mediaset which gets its name from the Milanese cabaret location, and Venice’s Ballo del Doge, the world’s most famous International PA O U L . Carnival Gala, where unique items like 18th century shoes, boots and leggings were created for performers animating the incredible evening. But also Chiambretti Night and Michelle Hunziker. And many musicals of works revisited to give them a modern touch where shoes must mirror all the characteristic traits of the period, though with some creative licence. These include Aladdin, leading to the 722, a One Thousand and One Nights shoe (see next page) and Robin Hood, where research and synergy between the Paoul style office and the costume designer led to fascinating coding of all leathers mirroring the colours of the wood, grass and trees. Each detail is designed and created based on a story to be told: starting from the basic models in the catalogue which

faithfully reproduce a certain period, studied carefully; to theatre shows where imaginative plots or revisitation of classic

From Zelig to Chiambretti Night, from Aladdin to Robin Hood. stories have to be interpreted; on to practical considerations that should not be underestimated like type of sole related

to where the show will be performed (just rubber, just leather, leather+lined rubber, buffalo+rubber, etc.). The Paoul atelier once had to make a pair of boots for hands. Yes, that’s right, hands. An actor had a part where he had to walk on his hands but seem to be on his feet. Requests can be really extravagant! Lots of recognition of the undisputed quality of products created for the theatre, in collaboration with the requests and needs of costume designers and artists, to be worn in theatres all over the world.

he Tailored line is for those who love the privilege of owning unique products Customising characteristics of a product has always been a part of Paoul philosophy, just like the craftsmanship found in standard items. However, with the Tailored service, Paoul adds the luxury of owning something really unique. That’s why there is no Tailored catalogue: the show is just the end of a path travelled together. A project born of a Customer’s need, even the most extravagant and original, together with Paoul’s ability to make wishes come true. The model’s exclusivity is guaranteed. It is made ad hoc, and is never made again. Tailored is a “custom-made” luxury and it takes just a second to realise that we are not dealing with mass, commercial production but with gifted manual intuition that indulges the passion for beautiful things. To make these Tailored models, the company always needs, independent of project complexity, about ten days for

A poem: the relations between Customer and craftsman. made ad hoc, the shoes should be tried on half way through, and there should be a meeting with the customer to check job management. Creating a Tailored project takes a minimum of 4 months and more, depending on shoe details, materials used and where the customer is located as he/she could be anywhere in the world. The prices of Paoul Tailored shoes, fully handmade, go from

500 euro upwards, based on customer requests and fantasy. The clientele is varied, Italian and international. In general, lovers of luxury shoes or famous costume designers who turn to Paoul for a Made in Italy solution for shoes for a prestigious mise-en-scène.
