Hurricane Matthew headed for our East Coast As this edition of All Things Country hits the press, a major disaster is about to happen on our East Coast of this great United States of America. I could be encouraging and say it “might miss us” but I don’t think that’s going to happen. As it roared across the Bahamas overnight it just gained in intensity, so I really fear for the worst. One of my cousins is a sheriff with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Department and thankfully he got his family evacuated to the Western side of Florida, along with their horses. He said it’s the sixth hurricane he has worked and I hope this isn’t the worst one he’ll have encountered. We cannot forget what happened with Hurricane Katrina and I just pray it doesn’t happen to our states to the south and east of us. I guess the next few days will be the telling sign as Matthew roars up the East Coast. And lets keep our fingers crossed that it doesn’t come back around and hit a second time, like some of the models are showing. I’m hoping that all of our Fall Break vacationers down south have started their journeys home by the time it hits. •••••• It’s October - that means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are several activities going on in Estill County to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Francie Snowden is having a drawing at Ravenna Florist and Greenhouse for the Willow Tree Christmas Story. Buy a ticket for $1.00 and be entered into the drawing. This means you can buy more than one ticket - have more chances to win and send more to the Susan B. Komen Foundation at the same time.
In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, October is the tenth month of the year. In early Roman calendar, it was actually the eighth month and there are 31 days in October ever since the since of the Roman emperor August. In North Temperature zone, the first frost happens, leaves change colors and leaves fall. By the time, most of the birds would have left for the South hemisphere to protect themselves from cold weather. However, in southern hemisphere, October’s weather is just like the northern hemisphere’s April weather. In October, farmers bring the last of the fall crops and ship them to other parts of the U.S. and also, many apples are harvested.
Also don’t forget about the Pink Luau going on October 15th at the Estill County Country Club. This is an annual event for the Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital Foundation and it’s becoming very popular. ••••••

Another thing to remember in October - have your Mammogram done. This was always a yearly reminder from my grandmother, Alice I. Kellogg. Her birthday was in October, and I miss her dearly. She was always the first to remind us in October to have our mammograms.

What A Treat ...The Gorge Underground
On the Road Again!

I had the pleasure of riding up to the Gorge Underground with Dave a couple of weeks ago, and what a treat it turned out to be. We went to the Gorge Underground, a new venture in the Red River Gorge. I wasn’t too sure after looking into that hole that we entered through, but hey, I’m usually game for anything. Well. Except bunjee jumping. The Gorge Underground is a new venture by Ian and Sandie Teal of Red River Gorge Cabin Rentals and Thrillsville Adventure Park. The Underground is actually a flooded out limestone mine that kayakers have been exploring for years. The Teals bought the property in hopes of bringing even more visitors to the Red River Gorge and having another fun adventure to partake in. We were actually there to test their new pontoon boat that is available for rent. It’s for those that don’t want to try out the kayaks. It’s really a relaxing way to explore the underground mine without a fear of tipping over into the chilly water. Yes, the water inside stays a consistent fifty-five degrees. Coats are definitely recommended for the tours. It’s recommended that you call Thrillsville for reservations so they can make sure they have the guides for your trip. The number is 844-254-6244. Check in is at Thrillsville as well, and then you’ll be directed to the mine entrance. The water is absolutely crystal clear due to no light.
We had a fun trip through the mine - me on the pontoon boat and Dave in a kayak. The kayakers put their flashlights down in the fronts of their boats and came up with all kinds of pretty light.

The Estill County Community Chorus resumed their practices on Thursday evening, September 29, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. The group has accepted and named a new Chorus Director. Her name is Rose D. Daniels, Ph. D. and they are honored and excited to have her extend her services, and long list of credentials (Ph. D in Choral Music Education, Master of Arts in Teaching Degree in Music and a Bachelor of Music Education,) to direct our Community Chorus, for this Christmas Concert!!! The chorus is now officially into the Fall Season, so it’s that time again to start preparing for Christmas music (our favorite time of the year, with all its fun music and carols.) Also, and MOSTLY, the group just enjoys seeing each other again to sing and for fellowship, and prepare for another wonderful and challenging concert. It stretches us to learn more, do more – our minds and voices! We are encouraging ALL SINGERS - ALL AGES – Middle School, High School and Up, Past Members, Present Members and NEW MEMBERS to join us!!!! We welcome you to come and be a part, no matter whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor or bass. No Auditions! Just bring your voices!!! Spread the word! Invite a friend! Come and give the chorus a try! They have FUN singing familiar songs and learning new songs. They do practice though, to make their community proud, when they perform at concerts. The chorus is a form of the Estill Arts Council in Irvine, to represent our community and the arts. The Red Hat Club attended the Tuesday Monthly Tea at the beautiful White Hall State Historic Site this past month. The food was delicious and prepared by Four Sisters Soap and Tea Emporium with a variety of teas. A tour was given afterwards of the historical house. Attending the tea was Queen Mother Linda Bowles, Rhonda Gould, Christine Flynn, Kathy Rivel and Dixie Gould. We missed Loretta, who was unable to attend.

As a consumer, avoid buying pumpkins that show any signs of rot. Also, steer clear of fruit that do not have handles or have handles in poor condition or are rotting. Handle pumpkins with care on the way home and store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Keep in mind that once a pumpkin is carved, its days are numbered. After cutting, exposed surfaces become colonized with fungi and bacteria. The warmer the weather after a pumpkin is carved, the quicker bacteria and fungi will break down the fruit.

Harvesting Pumpkins
For many people, pumpkins are a symbol of the fall season. Here in Kentucky, commercial farms are harvesting pumpkins, and they are readily available in local markets. For those Kentuckians that grow their own pumpkins, these are probably ready to harvest as well. Whether you grow or buy pumpkins for fall decorations, it is important to realize that careful harvesting and handling will help them last throughout the season. Pumpkins should be harvested as soon as they are ripe and show a good orange color. Although ripe pumpkins can be left in the field for a period of time and tolerate light frost, heavy frost can cause damage. Do not try to harvest when the fruit and vines are wet since this can lead to the development of fruit rot. The best time to harvest is during sunny, dry weather. Cut vines with a pair of shears and leave four to five inches of stem, or handle, attached to the pumpkin to further reduce the chance for rot. Any pumpkins that display signs of rot should be left in the field since these will not store for very long. Damaged pumpkins are much more likely to rot, so handle each fruit carefully to avoid bruising or puncturing the rind. Be sure to store pumpkins in a cool and dry location. To prolong the life of the fruit avoid exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible. Also, store pumpkins in a single layer to promote better air movement, which creates a less than favorable environment for bacteria and fungi.

The Kentucky Beef Conference is scheduled for Thursday, November 3rd at the Fayette County Extension Office, 1140 Red Mile Road (behind Central Equipment). Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the program runs 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year’s conference will cover current cattle market situation and marketing strategies by Cattle-FAX, mineral supplementation, profitability in today’s market, proven management strategies for today’s market, and veterinary feed directive update. Registration is $10.00 per person to cover the cost of a buffet lunch and refreshments. Estill County has a great library. It not only offers great programming at the library itself; it has great outreach programs outside the library. One of these programs being the book mobile. For instance this summer the book mobile and this library on wheels kept very busy every Friday. Mrs Sherri Jenkins, the book mobile librarian, drove to Mountain Crest and added her brand of fun and learning to the God’s Food Bank program. All the youth in Estill County were invited to come eat lunch at the summer meal program each Friday. After lunch Mrs Sherry would share books and teach a cool craft. At the end of the summer they had a end of summer reading taco party. Thank you to God’s Food Pantry and Mrs. Sherri for an awesome summer.

Real Vampires
Darkness settles over the countryside like a damp blanket, shrouding farms, villages, and cities in a quiet, misty stillness that is both peaceful and unsettling. People and livestock settle into homes and barns for a night of sleeping. Only when it is completely dark do the colonies of Common Vampire Bats begin to stir for a night of feeding. The colonies, sometimes numbering in the thousands, fly out of their cave or building roosts in search of…blood. They are true vampires, feeding each night on rich, warm animal blood wherever they can find it. Common Vampire Bats will feed upon a variety of livestock, wild animals, and humans as well. Of the thousand or so Bat species in the world, there are only three vampire species. One, the Common Vampire Bat, prefers a diet of mammal blood, while the other two dine mostly on the blood of birds. All three species live in Central and South America. This fascinating mammal is a “special ops” kinda critter, and well-worth our nature detective study and respect. Research has shown that these vampires have special thermoreceptors in their brain that can detect the warmth of blood close to the surface on a target animal. (Think of the military uses of thermal imaging radar and heat-seeking missiles) These infrared receptors can locate and see blood vessels near the surface on an ear or nose as the bat flutters around a farm field, forest, or open building. (some other animals that share this infrared receptor capability are Boa Constrictors, Pythons, and Rattlesnakes) If this is not creepy enough, the vampire’s brain also has the special ability to be ultra-sensitive to the sounds of regular breathing that an animal makes while sleeping. They hunt in darkness, but they can find you by the sounds of your breathing or the higher heat given off by near-surface blood vessels. Once they locate prey, they will land on the ground nearby and crawl to and then up onto the victim. Most bats have no ability to maneuver on the ground, but vampire bats can actually run on the ground, using their forelimbs for speed. Do you know that all bats are mammals, and do not have wings? They have arms just like you, covered with loose skin that stretches out so they can fly. Climbing up on their prey, the vampire will use its thermoreceptors to quickly locate a body part with a blood hotspot, and prepare for a meal from the unsuspecting animal. If there is hair in the way, razor-sharp teeth can quickly shear it off. Then the razor-sharp canine teeth bite into the animal rupturing the near-surface blood vessels. The bat has several potent anticoagulant chemicals in its saliva, preventing the seeping blood drops from clotting as the vampire bat laps them up with its tongue. They do not suck blood as depicted in scary movies. ...And here’s the most amazing part. Vampire Bats have a truly incredible digestive system. In twenty minutes of feeding, the bat can drink about one ounce of blood…half its weight, and it is way too heavy to fly. The stomach lining quickly absorbs the plasma from the blood and sends it to the kidneys. The bat starts urinating within two minutes after ingesting blood, getting rid of about 70% of the weight. The nutritious blood cells take longer to digest. The bat feeds for about two hours each night, and must feed at least every two days to survive. Studies of Common Vampire Bat colonies show that a bat that can’t find a meal one night can be fed from another bat…they will barf up some partially digested blood for the other bat to eat, helping one another survive until the next night of feeding.

Close to home, there are several vampires lurking nearby that would love to have a meal or two…from you. They tend to be small, hard to detect, and harder to kill. I’m referring to ticks, bedbugs, and fleas. Bedbugs tend to make the news regularly…no wonder, Lexington and central Kentucky are among the top 50 U. S. areas for infestations. These small, flat, non-flying insects thrive in climatecontrolled buildings, living in any convenient dark crevices, clothing, boxes, furniture, or luggage. Adults, nymphs, and eggs are all easily transported and quickly colonize new habitats looking for a readily available blood supply. Bedbugs are usually found in public transportation, hotels, schools, office buildings, theaters, and public shelters. They get their name from the common habit of infesting beds, where they can easily creep out from hiding at night to feast on the unwary sleeping host. Even in upscale hotels there are reports of guests awakening at night to find hundreds of bedbugs crawling on their face, neck, and arms, and hands… their preferred areas for sucking your blood. Often you will see three bites in a line as this vampire crawls over your skin feasting. Doctors call this the “breakfast-lunch-and dinner bite”, and this pattern distinguishes the bites from mosquitoes or other insects. The bedbug gorges itself so much that it will often turn a bright red in color, when it is filled with your blood. Every pet owner is familiar with fleas, but knows very little about them. These tiny critters are worthy of Jurassic Park status with their incredible abilities and alien-looking body that resembles a robotic war machine. An adult flea needs blood to reproduce, and it gets that blood from most any warm-blooded mammal. Many are named for their preferred diet: Cat Flea, Dog Flea, Moorhen Flea, Rat Flea, and so on, but they can vary their diet when necessary, and feast on you as well. A biting flea hurts, because this tiny critter attacks with four rows of teeth that literally chew their way into your skin to reach the tiny blood vessels underneath. They can jump onto you from over a foot away, and they do it without muscles. Research coupled with high speed videography have shown that the flea jumps by storing proteins in its legs, and the quick release of these proteins creates a spring-like reaction. We humans are fortunate indeed… if the 1/8” flea grew to be dog-sized, it could pounce on us from ambush a football field distance away, devouring the host to get the needed blood feast. But here’s the coolest, creepiest nature detective part. The flea has four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larva, after Continued on Page 19

a feeding on a host’s blood, spins itself into a silken cocoon, where it can drop to the floor and wait… and wait. This stealthy creature waits…from several weeks to over a year, for a mammal with its attractive warm blood supply to come close. The resting pupa can detect a host moving by vibrations, body heat, sound waves, even the carbon dioxide being exhaled. That’s Si-Fi stuff… incredible! Detection of available blood stirs the pupa to action, and it will quickly attach to the host for a blood-sucking frenzy to allow maturity to adulthood and egg-laying. A mature flea can lay up to 5,000 eggs. What’s the most-feared animal species worldwide? Well, a Kentucky survey revealed that locally people were most afraid of bats. But around the world, the winner of the King of Fear is the Mosquito! Yep, that’s right. The mosquito is the most dangerous animal on earth. They infect some seven hundred million people a year with disease, causing two million deaths a year from mosquito-borne disease. Yikes!! Only the females are vampires, needing the proteins in blood to produce eggs. Both males and females drink nectar to obtain sugar (carbohydrates) for energy to fly. These tiny creatures of death hunt for blood with incredibly fine-tuned senses. They use their sense of smell to sniff out potential blood sources, with special receptors on their antennae. They are capable of detecting 72 different odors, 27 of them being various chemicals in body sweat. They even have a preference for certain odors and will selectively choose some people over others. That’s why some people are bothered by mosquitoes more than someone else standing nearby. Mosquitoes are also very sensitive to carbon dioxide smell, and can detect your presence from far away. This vampire will find you as long as you are breathing.

They start by flying a general search pattern, scanning potential blood sources, then zero in on attack mode once a suitable target is found. Their tiny wings beat 400 to 600 times a second, and the females can fly up to 7 miles in one night searching for a blood meal. Flying in close to find the ideal feeding spot, they land and begin the feeding process. Using six different mouth parts, the lady of death begins rocking forward and back, using her razor sharp mandibles to alternately grab and tear, going deeper and deeper into your skin. Once she has torn into your capillaries, she inserts her tubelike proboscis in the incision and injects you with her saliva, which prevents blood clotting (and potentially transmits disease to you). Feasting on your blood, she will consume three times her weight and still fly. After a good feed, eggs will develop in a few days. She will lay them, then begin the cycle again with another blood feast. Females can live up to a month or so laying many batches of eggs; males live only about a week, mating if they can and eating nectar. Birds are not without their vampires also, the most noteworthy being the Vampire Finch found in the Galapagos Islands, which feasts on the blood of other birds. In the tropics there is the Candiru fish, and close to home we have the Lamprey Eel, which is really a fish in disguise that looks like an eel, and the Leech, somewhat like a swimming stomach with a tooth-lined sucker mouth attached. All of these and more would love to get their teeth, hooks, claws, barbs, pincers, tongues, suckers, proboscis, or mouths on you, and have you for dinner. In fact, the only place on earth you can go to escape all species of vampires is Antarctica. Winter camping anyone?

rac·on·teur /rak än tər,-ən-/ noun 1. a person who tells anecdotes in a skillful and amusing way. “Is that rifle loaded?” I asked in my ten year old voice as I nodded toward the ‘03 Springfield leaned in the corner of Uncle Delbert Marcum’s garage. He continued cracking hickory nuts as he snapped, “Of course it’s loaded! Wouldn’t be any good if it wasn’t, would it?” I am so thankful my sainted mother made sure I visited with my extended family as a boy. Many a day was later spent with Uncle Delbert, learning from his tales about long gone local characters, American History, or human nature. I was taught the art of storytelling from one of the best. With this column, I hope to carry on the family tradition of telling a good tale. So what’s a reader to expect? As of today, I intend to focus upon five different areas for this column: Current Events; Woodscraft; History; the Man-at-arms; and Arts and Leisure. Current events will run the gamut from local, state, national, and international news commentary to profiles of local personalities. The subject of woodscraft will include looks at preparing for emergencies, basic survival skills, hunting/fishing, and gear reviews. A student and teacher of history I will look at tales from here in Kentucky, United States, and the wider Western World. In the tradition of the late LTC Jeff Cooper I will endeavor to promote the skills of the man-at-arms specifically in the realms of training, mindset, legal considerations, and hardware. Finally, from time to time we will consider literature, film, music, and travel in arts and leisure.
