POOL SESSIONS - start 27th September Frome Leisure Centre Fridays, 8-9pm Cost £2.80 young people, £3.30 Adults

We divide the session into smaller paddling slots so that everyone gets a go. We issue you a wrist band when you pay to let you know what session to paddle in. Orange bands 8 - 8.20pm Blue bands 8.20 - 8.40pm Green bands 8.40 - 9pm Bring a swimming costume, towel and money. We provide the boats, paddles and spray decks. We don’t wear helmets and buoyancy aids in pool sessions. It’s easy. Pool sessions are for polo training, practising capsizes, rolling and for play boating if you stay in the deep end. Or you can just paddle about and be sociable. When you are not paddling, you can mess about in the small pool or stand and chat on poolside. If you want to bring your own boat it has to be very clean and you should bring it through the fire exit door. Deliberate sinking of boats is not encouraged. It puts people’s backs at risk when they empty them. Normal pool rules apply and so we do what the lifeguards say. Pool sessions are for everyone 7

FCC ‘THROWLINE ’ CLUB MAGAZINE

Canoe Polo on Fridays at the pool Following the success of Polo at the pool last year, we are going to repeat the format that evolved during the season. So that’s: BEGINNERS: first week each month EXPERIENCED: second week The beginners will paddle in the middle time slot (blue bands) of pool sessions. The experienced will paddle in the last time slot (green bands). BEGINNERS 4th October 1st November 6th December

EXPERIENCED 11th October 8th November 13th December

When we play polo at the pool we:  Wear buoyancy aids with side protection  Wear the helmets with faceguards  Use the pool boats (rounded ends)  Use club paddles (3mm thick blades) We provide all this kit for you. It is all there to try to keep paddlers safe in a fast and exciting activity where it is easy to lose sight of where paddles are going! If you are new to paddling and are not sure if Polo is for you, well just give it a go. Jack teaches the beginners the rules as you go. It is good fun! We have no-pushing in for the beginners, but we let rip in the experienced session, where pushing in is allowed. So a good roll is useful.

Nene Slalom –17/18th August By Andrew Overhill

not an option. In addition Jack unfortunately capsized on his first Sunday run. His time was 204.3 seconds on Saturday (including a 58 seconds penalty) in 41st place. Jack’s Mum and I decided on Sunday that Jack always performs better when we are not around so we went for a walk during the last run. On our return he came towards us beaming, having completed his final run in 145.5 seconds (with 4 penalty seconds) in 32nd place.

The course at Northampton was fed by two pumps and didn't look as challenging as the course at Bala. However, out of around 150 runs in Div 2 K1 Men over the two days there were only 11 clear runs. This suggests to the inexperienced eye like mine that this ‘easier’ course was in fact quite deceptive. The winning time on Saturday was 114.5 seconds and 105.3 seconds Sunday. Two competitors from Frome CC took part: Chris Bartlett and Jack Overhill.

On the way home we were listening to the radio in the car when we heard Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson pay tribute to a Welsh paralympian who had just passed away. Her daughter competed in the Women’s K1 Division 2 event and she was around the Nene centre all weekend. Unfortunately there were only 10/11 competitors in that category. We saw her at Bala where it was difficult for her as the riverbank was not naturally suitable for wheelchair access. Northampton was ideal, level and easily negotiable. Perhaps she waited for prize-giving as her daughter came 3rd. On this occasion we thought we would skip it.

Chris was in search of promotion to K1 Division 1 and achieved 9th place on Saturday with a time of 126.5 seconds, including 4 penalty seconds, and on Sunday 8th place with a time of 113.6 seconds, including 6 penalty seconds. Team Bartlett camped all weekend on the edge of the course and were probably grateful to return home away from the noise of the A428 dual carriageway, which Chris’ father told me seemed to be busy all night long! Becky took some excellent creative photos of Chris and Jack in action. Jack was competing in K1 Division 2 for the first time and definitely found the pace of the water challenging. On Saturday he missed gate 15 on both runs. Gates 14 and 15 were on a slope down at speed and he was not alone in missing the gate. Paddling back to it was

Ed John tells me that Jack swam twice this weekend! Once in a timed run and once in the practice. So 6 points for him. Have a look on P18 for one of Jack’s classic moves!

For more pictures like this look on the website Fun and games at the BBQ Six teams entered the race on the day. It was a series of challenges including a stand-up egg-and-spoon race, throwing sponges at a board, collecting floating balls, a ferryman loop and racing with balloons. For a change, the weather was superb and we basked in hot sunshine as we watched the fun and frolics. After food we relaxed in the sunshine or got on the water for a bit of friendly fun in open boats or kayaks. The obligatory sinking and swimming followed. A big thank you to Gareth for organising the mamTeam Simba has successfully completed the egg and spoon moth cooking event, comprising 4 BBQs. Thanks also to his assistant cooks, Jack, George and Tom. Meg needs a special mention for persuading people to enter the race or be marshalls. Safety was covered by Jane and Rich.

thank you Su Fewell, Kieran and Cameron On 26th August, the Fewells did the safety cover for the annual Wells Moat Race. This is a race on the moat around the Bishop’s Palace. And the craft are interesting to say the least! Su says that next year she has permission from the organisers to sink one particular team that needed help but disobeyed Su’s commands! 13

Slalom Llandysul slalom 25/26th May By Will Jones

K1 Mens Will J came 3rd and Jack O 4th. It was very hot during the day and everyone wished they had brought a pair of shorts with them.

On the way to Llandysul there was a lot of traffic especially on the Severn bridge. This meant we arrived later than expected but as it is in the summer there was still enough light to put up our tents and have a look at the course.

On the Sunday we had an even better day, except for a swim by me. But remember it wasn’t my fault. I was attacked by a fish. In the Div 2 K1 Mens Ben N came 5th, Chris B 10th, Andrew L 16th and John K 21st. In the Div 3 K1 Mens, Jack O came 2nd and Will J came 3rd.

We woke early the next day. Everyone in tents had complaints about the cold.

We had no first places but we gave it a good shot.

The course was exciting and had a ‘bit’ more flow than at Market Yard. I got a better result than last time I was here, and as a club we did quite well. Ben N came 7th and Chris B 11th in Div 2K1 Mens. Then John and Andrew came 2nd in the C2 race. In the Div 3

What we can learn from this experience is that if you ever do a good run in slalom don’t capsize just before the last gate and swim through the finish. Ed: Thank you Will for this great little report. Of course, after Ogmore you are in Div 2 and so swimming will be a very bad thing! In the meantime

Jack Overhill at Bala. We all thought slalom was a race round poles, not playboating! Of all the entries we had, there was one person who guessed the right river but no one got Jack!

The trailer now has both wheels back on it and so we can use it again! Something happened when Rich last towed it and a wheel locked up. Not sure how Andy managed to fix it but he did his magic stuff and it’s all done now.

LOST PROPERTY A rather nice watch was found in the men’s changing room recently. It would be nice to return it to its owner.
