As a condition of enrollment at TIDC performing arts studio, students and their parents or guardians agree to abide by all the policies set forth by TIDC performing arts studio, its director, faculty, and staff. TIDC performing arts studio reserves the right to terminate any student’s enrollment at any time for misconduct or inappropriate actions by either the student or his or her parent(s).

This handbook will serve as your guide to TIDC performing arts studio and its philosophy of dance education. It is very detailed and should be read thoroughly and kept on hand for future reference. We take our roles as mentors and teachers in your child’s life very seriously. It is our objective to inspire a passion for the art of dance in every child who passes through our doors. In the process, we strive to set the right example and help your child (and you) create memories that will last a lifetime.
Philosophy TIDC performing arts studio is committed to providing high-quality dance classes to enhance the overall development of the child. We provide a safe and child-centered environment to encourage our students to explore dance with qualified, nurturing teachers. We believe that dance training encourages young people to develop a positive self-image as they increase awareness of their physical being. Along with improving coordination skills and developing muscular awareness, dance classes give children the freedom to express themselves through movement. The highest educational standards are expected from all TIDC performing arts studio faculty members. They are lifelong learners who continue to educate themselves through certification programs, teacher-training schools, conferences, and other learning opportunities.

We believe that our success comes as a result of providing solid training and quality service, as well as our underlying belief in the strength of our organisation. We have created this handbook to offer our students and their parents a clear understanding of their commitments and responsibility to the school.

The first step to becoming a successful dancer is making a solid commitment to your classes. Strong technique is a key ingredient and class is where you develop that technique. Come to each class prepared to learn and without personal distractions. Class time is your chance to focus on yourself, so try to leave your concerns or worries at the studio door. True progress is made when you look at each class as an opportunity to become better at what you love to do. Dance full-out, stretch a little further, become more aware of your technique, and make the most of every class.
TIDC performing arts studio is committed to We believe that children’s success depends on the support of their parents or guardians. Because your commitment to the process makes an enormous difference, we encourage you to be a part of your child’s dance education.
Respect for the teachers is essential. Listen to each correction given, whether it’s directed at you or another dancer. A correction is an honor; it shows you how much a teacher cares about your progress as a dancer. Always say thank you when a teacher or choreographer offers you constructive criticism. Nothing can stop those students who apply themselves in every class and appreciate their teachers’ knowledge and experience.
Our programs rely on a positive atmosphere and educational experience for our faculty and students and their parents. Cooperation between all parents is expected. Showing respect—for other parents, the students, and the faculty— makes an important impression on the children. You are a role model for your child about how to interact with others in a professional setting. Your child’s presence at all classes is imperative. The spirit of teamwork and the lesson of dedication are a big part of our school’s educational process. Parents and teachers may look at a child’s learning from different perspectives. However, we believe they share a common goal: to ensure that every child receives the best possible training, both physically and mentally. Mutual respect among our faculty and our students’ parents provides the children with the ultimate care and education.
Special Information for Parents of Preschool Students
Our purpose is to provide the highest-quality preschool education in a secure, nurturing, and stimulating environment. TIDC performing arts studio serves the physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of the preschool students. We meet these goals with our age-appropriate curriculum and ongoing communication with parents The first few weeks of classes serve as an introductory phase to help students become comfortable with the overall dance experience, the classroom, their teacher, and their classmates. Right from the beginning we focus on your child’s coordination, listening skills, musical awareness, and developing imagination. We accomplish this through age-appropriate music and song, simple stretching exercises, ballet and tumbling basics, and games in an environment of creativity. Some preschool students will incorporate simple tap-dance movement at ages 3 to 5. Preschool dance is about helping children learn to tap into their imaginations and express themselves creatively, not necessarily about learning steps (although they do get introduced to some basic steps). So don’t be disappointed if your child doesn’t pirouette around the house or look like a budding ballerina right away. Preschool students usually perform two routines in our midyear concert and annual Showcase
Separation From the Parent The process of separating from the parent as the child attends dance class is an important accomplishment of preschool children. As children mature, they begin to identify themselves as independent personalities. In separating from you, the parent, your child is learning: • to develop an interest in the activities of the dance class; • to feel comfortable with other children in the class; • to understand that his/her parent will come back and pick him/her up; • to understand that all parents leave their children and come back for them. It is important to know that at times young children will explore the limits of attending dance class and say they don’t want to go. This period may occur anytime, but it is usually short-lived. Here are some suggestions that might help you handle the situation: • emphasize what the child is doing at the dance class rather than what you do while he/she is in class; • before you leave, see that the child is involved in an activity or is in the hands of a teacher; • avoid prolonged good-byes; • ask the teacher for help in separation. We expect the crying (and usually the tears are for the parent’s benefit).
It May Not Be the Right Time If your child cries or does not want to take class, don’t panic. If we push children and create more stress than they are already experiencing, they may come to perceive dance class as a bad experience. That kind of negativity could make them apprehensive about dance for a long time, which isn’t good for anyone involved. Never force your child into the classroom.
If your child stops attending class within the first month, the registration fee will be credited to the following year. We encourage you to have your child try again next year.
We recommend that children be encouraged to practice at home but not forced to do so. Repetition is one of the key elements for success with preschool dance students; the more they practice, the more confident they will feel. Practicing with your child allows you to join in the dance experience.
FOR ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS Understanding Dance Education As a parent, you play an important role in supporting your student financially, but your emotional support is of equal—and perhaps even greater—value. Encourage your child to be the best that he or she can be regardless of what others may achieve. Dance is an individual art form and children need to be allowed to achieve at a pace that’s comfortable. No two students will progress at the same rate, even if they experience the exact same training. It’s important to encourage children to focus on themselves, give their all, and be satisfied with their own accomplishments. Not all children will develop into professional dancers. One of the primary goals of our faculty
is to teach life lessons and skills that offer children the best chance for success. Dance education encompasses far more than technique and the steps your children learn. We believe the discipline of dance training gives young people a better understanding of commitment through learning, experiencing the spirit of teamwork, and discovering what they can accomplish through hard work. Our goal is to educate the minds, bodies, and souls of our students, teaching them the skills needed for a successful life, whether or not they stay involved in dance.
Class Placement The school faculty meets regularly to discuss the students’ progress and/or placement. It is our policy to offer appropriate opportunities to every child. Placement decisions are derived from many years of teaching experience. Often a child is placed in a particular group or class where he or she will feel confident, in order to promote the development of self-esteem. Some students who are placed in a higher level become discouraged, only to lose
their passion for dance. Others respond to the challenge of being in a class with students who are more proficient by pushing themselves to work harder. Placement is highly individual and the factors that go into the decision are complex.
Medical Information Parents must notify the director/and or teachers regarding children who use an inhaler or who may require medications during their time at TIDC performing arts studio It is also important to inform the director and/or teachers about your child’s existing medical conditions or learning disabilities at the time of registration and throughout the school year. Our teachers are trained professionals who are anxious to work with all children and personalities, and the more we know about your child, the better the dance experience will be for all involved. All information about our students is confidential. You play an important role in supporting your student financially, but your emotional support is of equal—and perhaps even greater—value.
STAYING INFORMED
We work hard to make the dance experience organised and fun. Keeping you informed is one of our primary goals. Please read all newsletters and other school information. Newsletters and important updates are printed and handed out to our students at the conclusion of class. The same newsletters and updates are emailed to you and posted on the TIDC performing arts studio website (www. performingartsadelaide.com.au) and Facebook page. If you are not receiving information then please let the office staff know ASAP. If you have any questions regarding the information distributed, we encourage you to contact the office on 8255 7736 between the hours of Monday – Wednesday 4.30 – 7pm, Saturday 9 – 2 pm. We answer email on a daily basis, except on weekends. CLASS SYLLABUS INFORMATION
HIP HOP Fast becoming one of the most popular dance styles, Hip Hop and classes include choreography seen on most music videos taught to the most recent hits. A fun and enjoyable class that is great for someone who wants to learn to move but doesn’t want to get too “technical”. For those with more experience we will continue to learn hip hop routines in the eisteddfod classes and work on the ATOD examination levels
Pointe and Pre-Pointe Work Students are not considered ready for pointe work until they are at least 12 years old and have been studying classical ballet for three or more years, with a frequency of two or more classes per week. All of this requires careful evaluation on the part of the teacher and Director. Once a dancer is ready, a recommendation letter will be given to each student and a copy will be kept in their student file. No one will be allowed to register for a pointe or pre-pointe class without this letter. Students who have been recommended for pointe or pre-pointe work should not purchase pointe shoes until notified by their teacher. Students should expect to begin the first year of pointe training in ballet shoes
Stretch and Body Conditioning Classes designed to help students increase their flexibility, fitness and strength are offered from Under 10 onwards
Contemporary Contemporary dance is a more relaxed form of dance than ballet, based on a wide range of free movements. Classes in contemporary dance are offered to students from Under 12 upward, for those wanting to compete they will require to attend two classical classes per week.
Pre-School – Ballet/Jazz/Tap We offer classes for tiny tots throughout the week and Saturday mornings. The Ballet/Jazz /Tap class includes basic ballet exercises with a big focus on fairies and magic finishing with a jazz or tap routine and classics such as Hi-5 and the Wiggles. This is also based on co-ordination and movement through music and acting is about building confidence, imagination and FUN! We follow the ATOD syllabus and give students the opportunity for assessment later in the year if you wish.
TAP Our tap classes are available for fun and fitness only as well as the opportunity for examinations under the CSTD and ATOD syllabi, again the class starts with a technical warm up and finishes with choreography. As well as the opportunity for eisteddfod and competition work, but must attend the tap technique class as well (from Under 10 upward only).
LYRICAL There will be several levels of this class on offer with an exciting new ATOD syllabus in contemporary now on offer. Lyrical is also great for technique, has more freedom than ballet and is fantastic for expression and movement through music.
SINGING/MUSICAL THEATRE Our teachers brings a vibrancy to each lesson and really encourages everybody to have confidence while singing and uses songs the students can relate to and want to sing. For the more advanced singing student, private lessons are encouraged to really hone in on their individual talent. We also have Musical Theatre classes on offer for those wanting to experience singing, dancing and acting, to help with an all round performance. CSTD have also introduced a new examination syllabus.
ACROBATICS Flexibility is an important part of dance these days and a compulsory class for advanced level dance program students. These classes consist of strengthening work, followed by flexibility working within each child’s ability. Acrobatics is also introduced with further work on flexibility and the introduction of tricks, this is available for all levels and starts from Under 8.
CLASSICAL BALLET The basis to all dance styles is Ballet, teaching core technique that all students should do if serious about dance. Students wishing to take their dance seriously and wanting to do classical exams must attend two classes a week to be eligible and must attend a classical class if wishing to take part in competitions (two per week to be eligible for the classical style troupes). This is under the AICD syllabus.
JAZZ Jazz dance is a high energy style of dance and is a mix of ballet technique combined with dynamic movements, performed to modern /popular music. A Jazz Class starts with a warm-up, then technical work including kicks, leaps and turns are done from the corner, finishing the class with choreography. We have both technical classes and those for technique – those wishing to participate in competitions must attend the technique class also (from Under 10 upward only).
Dress Code Requirements TIDC performing arts studio maintains a dress code to encourage concentration and a sense of inclusiveness (variations in attire can be distracting and contribute to feelings of inequality). Uniformity in dancewear allows the teachers to assess how well the students are implementing the technique being taught, problems with alignment, and other important aspects of dance training. All dancewear is available from our shop located at Elizabeth, Discount Dancewear and can be ordered for Golden Grove and West Croydon students. Phone 8252 2192
Students should carry their dancewear, shoes, and other belongings in a dance bag. Please print your child’s name on the bag as well as on all of its contents.
Dancewear is to be kept in good repair and laundered on a regular basis.
Boys age 10 and older should wear a dance belt.
Watches, jewelry, and safety pins should not be worn to class.
Dance shoes should never be worn outside.
Female students should wear their hair tightly secured and styled away from the face; a neat bun is preferred.
Students are expected to observe good personal hygiene habits. Deodorant is required for students age 10 and older.

FEES & PAYMENT POLICIES We want everyone to be able to do as many classes as possible which is why we offer great discounts for the more classes you do. We are very reasonably priced and competitive with other dance schools. We also offer our UNLIMITED CLASSES FEE. UNLIMITED FEES do not receive the family discount or early discount (but does include life member – if paid by due date) and does not include extra practices (rehearsal fees/Private Lessons). All other fees (not including UNLIMITED) receive 10% discount if paid in Week 1 of term (or week 2 for new students) and must be paid for the term by week 4. Any fees not paid by week 4 of the term will lose all discounts (including life member, concession, family and multiple class) plus a $5 outstanding fee will be added for each week that fees remain outstanding . Please contact MISS KERREANE if you are having difficulties and need an extension BEFORE the outstanding fees are charged. Please be aware that this is a business with rent, bills and teachers to pay. Any student with outstanding fees by week 6 will not be able to continue classes until fees are paid or arrangements made (and adhered to). Students with fees owing or overdue will not be considered or entered for any examination or allowed to perform in end of year concert or Eisteddfods. No uniforms or costumes will be handed out unless fees are paid in full. They may also not be permitted to return the following term. We run along with the school terms and fees are averaged out over the four terms so they are the same regardless of number of weeks or public holidays. We do have some special classes during holidays for troupe and exam students with upcoming competitions. We often also offer school holiday workshops for those students who want to fill their holidays with something fun and learn new techniques. Fees can be paid via internet transfer (details sent out with your invoice) CASH or CHEQUE made out to TIDC and presented to the office. Eftpos is available at the Elizabeth Studio however please note that a $5 Eftpos processing fee is payable should you choose this method.
Registration Fee A term registration fee of $25 per student (discount for families) covers the cost of mailings, insurance, handbooks, trophies, and so on. Registration fees are not refundable with the exception of preschool students who are determined to be unready for dance and may receive a credit for the following year.

Concert students will receive accounts for end of year costumes due before costumes are received. Exam students may also have an account for entering exams – must be paid for before entered.
4th Term

Full term tuition is due by 4th week of each term. Tuition is paid via cash, direct debit or eftpos (charges apply). Discount is given if fees are paid within the first week of term (first term is first two weeks while everyone settles). All discounts are forfeited if not paid by the due date and charges will apply. Please note: tuition is based on the year regardless of how many weeks are in a given month. Remember this is a yearly commitment.
Discipline Policy
In order to maintain a happy, healthy, professional environment, students are taught the importance of being a part of the group. We encourage students to have respect for other students, the teachers and staff, and studio property, and we foster the development of good habits and compliance with rules of conduct. Our staff and faculty are trained to use constructive techniques of discipline to maintain class control and handle individual misbehavior.
• Children who exhibit unacceptable behavior or attitudes are told what is wrong and directed to a positive alternative approach or behavior.
• If a child strikes another child, the two are respectfully separated and each is asked to explain what happened. They are then asked to help solve the problem, talk to each other, and reconcile with one another.
• Children who are disruptive will be respectfully asked to stop the behavior. If the behavior is repeated, they will be reminded of it and told how it affects others. If the disruption continues, the children involved will be asked to sit down for a short period of time (usually three to five minutes) before rejoining the class.
• If a child’s misbehavior continues to disrupt the class, the parent or guardian will be called to pick up the child.
Termination of Enrollment
In certain circumstances, when it is in the best interest of one or more students, it may be necessary for the school owner or director to terminate a student’s enrollment. Every effort will be made to correct a problematic situation before terminating enrollment. Reasons for termination of enrollment include the following:

Disruptive or dangerous behavior by students or their parents
•
Abuse of other children, staff, or property
•
Inability of TIDC performing arts studio to meet the child’s needs
•
Failure to continually pay tuition fees.
Arrival and Departure We encourage students to arrive 15 minutes before class starts. For their safety, children under age 10 should be picked up immediately after class. Students ages 10 and older must be picked up no more than 15 minutes after their class is completed. Please remember we are not responsible for students once they have left the classroom.
Attendance All students are expected to attend their regularly scheduled classes. Each class offers a step forward in the educational process. A missed class could leave a child one step behind the other students. During the months of February through April, choreography for competitions will be taught and rehearsed. It is important for children to feel completely confident with the choreography and then further choreography for our year-end performance Showcase will follow in term 2 and 3. Missing class during this period could result in frustration for the students and their teachers and classmates.
Tardiness Dance is a physical activity that requires the body to be warmed up in order to execute movement safely. Late students miss the proper warm-up and/or barre and therefore may sustain injury. Students who arrive more then 10 minutes late may be asked to observe class for reasons of personal safety.
Class Visitors Safety issues and legal responsibilities make it impossible for us to allow students to bring visitors into the classroom. Students should not invite siblings, other relatives, or friends to their classes with the exception of special events such as “Bring a Friend Week” and in-school performances.
Makeup Classes Students who miss a class will have the opportunity to make it up with another similar class. Please check with the office to determine the best makeup class for your child.
Lost and Found Please mark all dancewear, shoes, and personal items with your child's name. We will make every effort to locate and return lost items; however, we cannot be responsible for any items that your child brings to class.
Illness Colds, flu, and other contagious diseases occur frequently and spread easily among children. To help protect your own child’s health and to minimize the possibility of contagion at school, please keep your child at home if you observe any of the following symptoms:
• Nasal discharge that is green or yellow
• Complaints of ear pain
• Consistent cough
• Severe sore throat
• Eyes that are pink, burning, itching, or producing discharge
• Diarrhea or vomiting
• Fever
If these symptoms or other conditions deemed contagious are observed in your child during a class, you may be called to pick up your child immediately. When your child has a fever, please keep him/her at home until the temperature returns to normal. If there are any lingering signs of illness, such as glassy or watery eyes, listlessness, and drowsiness, please keep your child at home. This will help to ensure that the illness has passed and that your child will be well enough to resume class activities the following week.
Emergency Evacuation Although we have never experienced an emergency evacuation at the school, we are prepared for such a circumstance. Emergency evacuation routes are posted in all classrooms and in the foyer. Students are to evacuate quietly and walk in single file as quickly as possible to the designated area, where teachers will check roll. Students and teachers are to return to classrooms and buildings when the all-clear signal is given.
Car Park Safety The school is home to children of all ages. Please enter and exit our car park with extreme caution. Never park your vehicle in any area that is not a designated parking space. At Elizabeth the area in front of the roller doors is STRICTLY for teachers and staff only. Please do not allow siblings to play in the parking lot.

Photography Due to child protection laws and privacy issues, we are unable to allow parents to take photos or videos of students during any Open Days or concerts. Please indicate on your child’s enrolment form if you give permission for your child to be photographed and for their image to be used on the TIDC performing arts studio website or Facebook page or in school publications. Please note that no names or other identifying information are used with photos on the website or in school publications.
Student and Parent Use of Social Media Use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogging, and other online social-media vehicles is commonplace. This policy is intended to provide TIDC performing arts studio students and parents with guidelines to eliminate any confusion concerning the use of social media. •

By that we mean you are forbidden to share personal information about the director, other students or their families, or anything that is proprietary and/or confidential to them or TIDC performing arts studio

General Policies
• Use of the school telephone is limited to emergencies only.
• Parents and students should never interrupt a class in session.
• Only water is allowed in the studios. No food, drinks, or gum.
• We love babies and young children and appreciate the chance to meet our students’ siblings. However, our priority is the safety of every child on the school premises. Children must be supervised at all times and are not free to run around the foyer or classroom areas.
• Please do not dispose of dirty diapers inside the school. Large bins outside the studio are better suited for such disposal.
• No phones or computers may be used during class time. (This means no emailing, Internet use, or text messaging.) Filming routines for rehearsal is allowed if the teacher gives approval.
• Never speak negatively about teachers, students, or parents from other schools or our own studio.
• Don’t forget our reward system for encouraging new students to enroll in TIDC performing arts studio
• All students must show respect for their teachers at all times. Inappropriate behavior could result in dismissal from the school.

Costumes
We spend many hours determining the correct costumes for each class. They are always age appropriate and of the highest quality possible. Preschool students will need two costumes; all other students will need one or two costumes for each dance form they train in.
It is also planned to re-use many costumes from last year. New costumes may be required for the competitions or concert at the end of the year. In an effort to ensure that costumes are delivered in time for school photographs and an organised distribution to our students, costume orders are placed early in the year. Costume manufacturers do not accept cancellations or offer refunds; therefore the school does not refund costume deposits.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND ACTIVITIES Eisteddfod (Competitions) Students at TIDC performing arts studio are provided with opportunities to compete in eisteddfods (dance competitions) and scholarships throughout the dance year. These include group dances in the Get the Beat and Candance Eisteddfod, solo dances in eisteddfods and also in external ATOD scholarships Once a student has been invited to join a group, a permission note must be signed and returned to the office. By signing this note, parents are committing their child to maintaining attendance at rehearsals and performances, and the purchase of a performance costume and accessories. All group costumes are designed and purchased by the school. Costumes are specifically made or purchased for each child, in which case parents will be required to pay for them. The school retains the right of distribution for all group costumes. These costumes must not be sold outside the school and should be kept in good condition, so that they can be sold to the school or to other students, if needed.
Examinations TIDC performing arts studio work under the Australian Institute of Classical Ballet (AICD), Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) and Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD), with exams and assessments available in classical, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre and theatrical. While examinations are not compulsory, they are a good opportunity for your child to develop their dance skills, demonstrate their progression and gain confidence with examinations. To enter an examination, students need to maintain regular attendance at syllabus classes and should endeavour to practise the syllabus work at home. Entry into examinations requires submission of the official entry form, along with the entry fee. You will be provided with an entry form well before the due date. Completed forms are submitted to the office. The examination timetable will be placed on a noticeboard in the foyer close to examination time. Parents should check both arrival and pick-up times. Students are asked to arrive for a warm-up at least one hour before the start of the examination and to allow time for dressing.
To participate in examinations, students are required to wear the school exam uniform, including a leotard, accessories and character skirts if needed. Graded students’ uniforms are also hired. All students are expected to provide their own ballet tights and shoes. Graded examinations are held at the TIDC performing arts studio premises. Please note that examinations are generally held during daytime hours. Should your child need to take time off from school, you will find that schools are generally understanding and supportive. Those considered ready will sit examinations, which are held at different times through the year, those still needing more confidence will be encouraged to take part in an assessment level, where they remain with class mates and still receive a medal and report just no grading. Exams are a fabulous way of assessing you child’s progress and giving them a goal to work toward. We are also pleased that our examinations in higher levels are recognised by the SACE board. More information can be sought by checking out the websites of the Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing, Australian Institute of Classical Dance or Australian Teachers of Dance.
Solo Lessons Students may be invited to perform a solo/duo dance at an eisteddfod, in which case, they will need to undertake at least one private lesson per week. Solo/duo dances can be performed in all genres. Students will need to have a costume made or purchased for a solo dance. Costume requirements, including hair and make-up, can be discussed with the student’s private lesson teacher. Music for solo dances is selected by the private lesson teacher and recorded onto a CD. The CDs are provided to the student for a nominal fee, with the money paid directly to the teacher. The student is responsible for providing the correct music to the eisteddfod organisers. CDs should be marked with the name of the student and the section they are performing in. Students are advised to take a backup copy of their music to eisteddfods. It is advisable to purchase a copy of eisteddfod schedules to ensure that you have a good understanding of the entry requirements for each eisteddfod.
ALL requests for solo lessons are to be directed through Kerreane – teachers are not to be approached directly for solo lessons.
Bring-a-Friend Week (not all classes are eligible) The first week in March is “Bring-a-Friend Week.” Students may bring a friend (similar in age) to the school to experience a fun class designed for them and their guests. Students will also have the opportunity to perform their choreography for their friends. Students’ friends attend class free of charge during this week. If they then enroll you receive your discount.
Workshops and Camps Each year TIDC performing arts studio offers workshops and camps for students. The camp is planned for the June long weekend and we hope to have various workshops available with details distributed soon.
Studio Rental The studios are available for rental for meetings, rehearsals, and other activities. Whether you’re planning a one-time, weekly, or monthly event, give us a call to determine whether we can accommodate your group or activity, or perhaps to rehearse a routine. This is dependant upon availability.
Birthday Parties We offer several birthday party options for both boys and girls. Parties are themed and can be dance related or not. Please contact the office for a complete brochure or visit our website for details.
Cancellation Policy
TIDC performing arts studio reserves the right to cancel any program due to lack of enrolment. Students will be emailed no later than 1 week prior to the start of any class or 2 weeks prior to the start of camp. In special circumstances where a student needs to drop a class, the parent must send a letter to be reviewed by the Director. Requests are only considered from date received. Letters are accepted by regular mail, email, or in person. SECOND HAND DANCE SHOES If you have any old dance shoes sitting at home, you can bring them in to the studio and put them into our second hand shoe box. Just write your name and number and amount you’d like to sell them for on the sole. When the shoes sell, the money will given to you. At GOLDEN GROVE please give to Shirley Pedler and West Croydon and Elizabeth please hand to the office. LOCKERS, RUBBISH AND NOISE Students should be respectful at all times of the studio and others in class. NO running in the hallway or surrounding areas. Lockers are provided at Elizabeth and West Croydon. All students should place their bags in a locker before coming in to class. Students should not enter the dance rooms until the teacher calls them in to begin class. Please don’t open the door and look into the previous class as this distracts the students. This also applies to parents at the end of the class – please wait until the students have been dismissed... our teachers try not to run late but if they are keeping the students a few minutes extra this would be for good reason and could be a critical part of the class. Please respect our classes and teachers as you would at school. All rubbish MUST be removed when you leave. There are bins provided in the foyer and in the dance rooms. If your drink spills or your bag leaks, you are responsible for cleaning up the mess – please use the mop or sponge from the kitchen. Also please clean up dishes used in Kitchen area. Parents should try to keep other siblings quiet in the waiting areas.
TEACHER COMMUNICATION
TIDC now has a faculty of about 15 teachers. Our teachers are talented, professional and dedicated. If you would like to speak to your child’s teacher, whether it is to discuss their progress in class or just to ask some questions, please ask for an appointment at the front desk. We now have a message book, where you can write your name and number and who you would like to speak to, and that teacher will contact you at their earliest convenience. Your child’s progress and your feedback is very important to us but please do not approach a teacher before or after class as this encroaches on your child and others class time.
Under no circumstances should any parent enter the studio unless specifically invited in by the teacher. If you need to give an urgent message to your child please ask the receptionist at the desk to send in a note – rather than going into the dance room and interrupting the class.
LABELS AND LOST PROPERTY There is a box of lost property in the waiting areas. At the end of every term, the box will be emptied and the lost property will be given to charity. Please ask your child to check if they have left anything behind as you leave the studio. Please also make sure that you label all belongings.
CANDANCE We have been invited, once again to be part of the CANDANCE performance to be held at the Entertainment Centre in May to assist with raising funds for cancer research. Last year was a huge success and this year promises to be even bigger. Students can have the opportunity to perform with other studios in the opening (by audition) and also as part of our studio. The routine will be set in normal class times and then there will be a couple of group rehearsals to put it all together, details will follow.
CLASS ORGANISERS I am eagerly seeking a class organiser for each age group at all studios. This person will assist with costumes and organising of props for their age group and will liaise with the class teachers and parents to make sure they are fully aware of all up and coming events and requirements, if you are interested in helping your class out, please let me know asap. CLASS MEETINGS FOR ALL COMPETITION CLASSES WILL ALSO BE HELD EARLY IN THE TERM TO DISCUSS THE YEAR AHEAD.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD IMPROVE? The first thing you can do is encourage and inspire them. Expose them to Musicals and dance DVD’s and all different styles of music. Try and get a copy of the music they are dancing to and encourage them to practice – no one gets better unless they practice. I always explain that if they learn something new in Maths, they have to go over it again before an exam. It is the same with class – if they don’t think about their steps from one week to the next, most of the following lesson is spent “remembering” the previous weeks steps. The same goes for learning scripts and songs. If you are only doing one class a week, and your friend is doing 3, they will probably improve at a faster rate – the more you put into your dancing the more you will get out of it. Remember dancing is a sport and your body is important – you must try to stay healthy and eat right. Always bring water to class and light snacks for during breaks
Do you have to pay for missed lessons? Yes. We still have to pay teachers and bills and cannot fill your child’s place for the week they are away.
How old does my child have to be to start? 2 ½ yrs old, although we do have a toddler class on offer where parents can attend with their childen.
Can parents watch? No. It is too distracting to have parents in the room – although your child might thrive with your attention, another may retreat. Sometimes at the end of class we may call the parents in to watch what we have been doing.
What happens if you are late or absent? Please try and be on time for every lesson. If you are late, quietly come in the room and apologise to the teacher then join the class. If you are too sick to come please text your teacher to explain your absence – this is very important for troupe students.
How many routines will my child be performing in the concert? Each class will perform one routine per class in the concert. If another child is in a lot of routines it is because they spend a lot of time at TIDC
Why are the same children in the front? At TIDC we pride ourselves on giving everyone a chance. For the concert all children are given equal opportunity to be in the front. In Troupe and advanced Stream, routines are choreographed for competitions and stronger dancers will be given more prominent positions.
If I miss a class can I attend a make up class? Under 5 classes can be made up by attending a different session, but most other classes cannot and if you are unable to attend you will forfeit this class for the week.
Are classes held on public holidays? Yes classes continue on all public holidays. Some Golden Grove classes will be transferred to Elizabeth due to the centre closing but otherwise all classes will run as normal.

Just a note, unlike school teachers, dance teachers become part of your children’s and your life in quite a big way and at TIDC we love to become involved in extra curricular as well – attending students school productions upon invitation is just one small example. So we do ask that if you decide to move on in other areas in the future that respect be shown in letting the teachers know, in this day of facebook, email and sms it doesn’t take much.
