Derrick has lived here for 32 years and thinks this is the best neighborhood in all of Palo Alto. The access it brings as well as the local park really makes Evergreen Park shine, he said. Although California Avenue and El Camino Real give close access to shopping, some residents feel the negative aspects of spill-over parking and traffic. The traffic problem was solved some time ago by putting street barriers that prevent drivers from using the neighborhood streets as shortcuts. However, parking is still a problem at times, according to Schrom. Both Derrick and Schrom pointed

out that Evergreen Park has a variety of ethnicities, ages and occupations. “I think there are many goodhearted people that I enjoy living among,” Schrom said. Derrick showed that sense of neighborhood spirit and comradeship after the ’89 Loma Prieta earthquake when he went to check up and help his elderly neighbors. To his relief not a single one was hurt. n

Positively Green The Green Industrial Revolution: sequel to the man on the moon by Iris Harrell hen my grandparents complained that the world was changing too fast, I felt they were unnecessarily resisting the exciting modern age that was upon them. Why would they complain? Instead of smelly, unsafe kerosene lamps, they now had electricity with lights that turned on at the flip of a switch. Instead of a truck arriving once a week with a huge block of ice for the “ice box,” they owned a refrigerator and freezer that kept their food perfectly chilled. In place of going to the dreadful outhouse or using “chamber pots,” flushable toilets improved their lives beyond measure. Still, as much as my grandparents learned to enjoy modern conveniences, they felt the world was moving too fast and leaving them behind. The second industrial revolution was upon them and it was an unfamiliar place for them to navigate. The world my grandparents knew was much different. My grandfather farmed for a living and could not read or write. He picked my grandmother up in a horse-drawn buggy when they were courting. My grandmother, who had an eighth-grade education, eventually became the breadwinner, working in the town grocery store after my grandfather could no longer farm. For fun, she made quilts out of scraps of material from the large cloth seed bags that were bought to plant the fields each year. She cooked, canned and froze the vegetables and fruits grown in their large garden. When my grandparents finally bought a television, the world they saw on it was not the world they identified with. My grandfather was certain that the man on the moon was a fictional TV story and it could not possibly have been true. Their response to America’s second industrial revolution was to adjust only as much as needed and to deny the parts they did not comprehend. Fast-forward to 2009. Now that I am their age and the third industrial revolution is being thrust upon me (whether I am ready for it or not), I have first-hand knowledge of what my grandparents were grappling with. Education has little to do with changes like these. Even with two college degrees, I fumble around on my computer trying to figure it all out. I was a marvel at communications and information management 20 years ago when a phone was just a phone, a fax was a fax, and a computer was primarily for e-mail. Determined to embrace the fast-moving future train, I’ve learned one baby step at a time how to scan, download, “cut and paste” and how to store and retrieve documents. However, I still carry paper and pen with my Palm and Blackberry. I like to do things quickly, and yet the speed of life today seems phenomenally fast-paced. It leaves me feeling like my grandparents must have felt — out of breath and struggling to stay current. One facet of the future in which I am determined to stay forever young is the paradigm shift required to keep our planet healthy enough to sustain our progeny: the Green Industrial Revolution. Each generation will continue to push forward faster than the previous one can keep up, but only if there is a planet left to change. The Global Health Clock is ticking and every one of us need not only keep up, but stay ahead. I continually ask myself: What am I doing to set the pace for this revolution? How can I make both small and large efforts today as well as in my future? Who can I associate with that will stretch my comprehension of what it means to live green? In the words of Bob Dylan, “May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.” While the world continues to move forward at break-neck speed, we must continue protecting the Earth’s resources. My grandparents may have fought to understand men landing on the moon, and I might resist micro-blogging, but I want to challenge all of us to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to making a green contribution by adapting beyond the way we’ve always lived. ■ Iris Harrell is CEO and president of Harrell Remodeling, Inc. in Mountain View (www.harrell-remodeling. com). Investment is always for the future. Make careful choices. Make wise investments. By doing so, you can survive—even thrive—during tough times. Alain Pinel Realtors’ business philosophy has always been based on investing and planning for the long term. That same approach has also been invaluable in helping our clients identify their best options when selling or purchasing a home. So while headlines trumpet a national “lending crisis” and “plunging real estate prices,” the fact is that many of the Bay Area’s mature neighborhoods remain sound and are historically strong. Although we can’t control economic cycles, we can help you make the best possible residential real estate decisions. If you are considering selling or buying a home, call us or visit apr.com.
