Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for? I am really looking forward to participating in a group show with Taseer Art Gallery. I’m also very excited to be showing with Sanat Initiative later this year.
What advice would you give to a younger you? What you think of yourself is the only thing that matters. Always stand up for yourself.
Your most favourite word: Think
What first drew you to the arts? For as long as I can remember, drawing has always been something that came easily to me. This, combined with encouragement from my parents, and their interest in the arts, which often took us to museums, and historical sites in different parts of the world, ensured that my interest flourished. I have been very privileged in this regard. What is your background in the arts? Art was a subject I took throughout my education. I finished my BFA at the National College of Arts in Lahore, specializing in Indian miniature painting. I completed my MFA in painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. During this time I also learned gilding, the art of applying gold leaf on different surfaces, at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. I’ve recently become very interested in printmaking and just completed a wonderful course in Stone Lithography. Where do you derive your inspiration from? I often look to traditional miniature painting to develop my images. Contemporary art is equally important. The role and perception of women as conceived by patriarchal norms versus the reality and desires of women themselves, is a significant theme. In recent work, my home in Lahore has become extremely important in understanding memory in relation to space. In my paintings and installations, I reimagine, deconstruct and relive my home, which is challenging when done from a distance. I use architectural structures in my imagery to explore displacement, nostalgia, entrapment and psychological transformation. The possibilities of different materials ranging from pigments to fabric, and processes of making be it collage or printmaking are very exciting and lead to dealing with concepts in a variety of ways. 42

Are they any particular art movements that inspire you? Even though there is no likeness between my work and Pop Art, I find it to be an extremely inspiring movement in its playfulness, accessibility and how it makes the objects of the everyday beautiful. I consider miniature painting an art movement as well, and frequently look to Pahari and Persian schools of painting before I start any piece. Can you walk us through the process of developing your work? I’m a very slow worker and procrastinate a great deal. I don’t sketch much, and spend a lot of time thinking of an image before it reaches the paper. I take photographs, read and visit exhibitions as a part of the research process. It can take months to finish a painting. I use watercolour and gouache, and prepare colours in shells. After I draw the image on paper, I apply flat colour washes with watercolour brushes. The washes are then built up gradually; tones and forms are created using progressively thinner brushes. On the other hand, my installation work is a lot more spontaneous and less time-consuming, in which materials are placed in different arrangements without much planning. Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being? Art has all kinds of effects on me; as a viewer of art I can feel anything from excitement and curiosity, to anxiety and disgust. The making of art is quiet a complicated experience. Sometimes you can be disappointed by what you’ve made or content, and as an artist you go through various phases of emotions with your work that are determined by what you wish to achieve in your practice. Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process? I’m a very slow reader but the written word is a great source of image making. I just finished an excellent book called ‘The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses’ by Juhani Pallasma and started ‘The Spirit of Indian Painting, Close Encounters with 101 Great Works 1100- 1900’ by B.N Goswamy. Who would you say is your mentor? I’ve been very lucky to have amazing tutors both at the NCA and the Slade. It would be wrong to single any one person out. I gain a lot of insights through conversations with fellow artists, colleagues and friends. Tell us about your favorite piece. These days I often recall of ‘Apple Tree in the Garden’ (1932-42) by Edvard Munch, a very haunting and vivid painting which I saw recently at a Royal Academy exhibition. What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far? I would say that my degree show at the Slade in 2015; it was a very challenging but fruitful time, and I was happy with how the work of two years came together in the space. It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement? I would agree. The source of great art isn’t singular though; each artist responds differently to his or her experiences of the world, whether painful or joyous, and it is from this deep sensitivity that successful work stems. What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did? I would like to be asked about the discourse surrounding miniature painting. Curatorial statements often present contemporary miniature artists as breaking away from a restricting tradition. I would question this premise. Miniaturists have always innovated and this is not specific to the present moment. I would therefore want to conceptualize miniature painting as an evolving movement rather than a tradition.

Day For a daytime look we kept it simple and minimum and added a head wrap to neaten up the hair. The print is very happening in itself so we went for a more minimalistic and comfortable look.

Night For nighttime, we chose a more dramatic look by slicking back hair, moving focus to the outfit and face. We added chunky accessories and feather earrings to compliment the outfit and make the colours stand out as well. One can never go wrong with black heels, and adding them to the look just made it perfect for a night out with friends or even the red carpet!

Day Silk is perfect for varying looks as it works well as an outfit for anytime of the day and this outfit is perfect to lounge in, go out for gardening or have friends over for coffee. It is comfortable to sleep in and pretty enough to be worn when awake as well! For a nighttime look, we paired the blue separates with contrasting magenta heels which automatically made the look more party like. Pinning the hair up in an elaborate hairdo with a strand of swarovski crystals completed the look! Hoop earrings made the look a bit more 70's! 48

For these floral separates we kept the daytime look simple and effortless, making it perfect to lounge in or run out to pick groceries and even meet up with friends for a quick lunch. It works well as an outfit to sleep in and also to roll out of bed to go out!
Day
For the Nighttime look we pulled the hair back in a pony tail, added stud earrings, heels and smoky eyes making the look perfect for a date night. Adding accessories and lip colour to plain separates automatically makes them dressier!
