CREATIVE PORTFOLIO

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING* BY PAVLINA GANTCHEVA

*

This portfolio does not intend to depict the totality or the absolute in my work but it’s rather a brief glance through some of my favorite projects. The focus is on the evolution of the idea with all its permutations.

SAEMANGUM, SOUTH KOREA IN COLLABORATION WITH ADAM FREISE, DWAYNE DANCY, MATTEW PAULY, AND GEORGE QUAIVER 2008

LINEAR LINEAR CITY CITY SAEMANGUM SAEMANGUM CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ANIMATION OF THIS PROJECT !!!

SAEMANGUM IS LOCATED IN THE LEAST DEVELOPED RURAL AREA OF JEOLLABUK-DO PROVINCE, SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH KOREA.

IT COMPRISES AN AREA OF 400KM2 ALL IN WATERS OF THE YELLOW SEA

South Korea

SIZE DOES MATTER....

UM E G ANM SAE

Saemangum

A 33 KM-US$ 4 BILLION DYKE OBSTRUCTS THE FLOW OF TWO RIVERS INTO THE SEA.

!... ! ! P IT U E SIZ

THE RESULT IS AN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER CAUSING THE DESTRUCTION OF ONE OF THE WORLD‛S LARGEST MUD FLATS AND 83% OF SOUTH KOREA‛S WETLANDS.

THE INTERNATIONAL IDEA COMPETITION CALLED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CITY WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 5 MILLION. THE PROPOSAL HAD TO PROVIDE A STRATEGY HOW TO STRUCTURE THE CITY AS IT CONCERNS ITS GENERAL DESIGN AND WHAT KIND OF INDUSTRIES IT SHOULD HOST IN ORDER TO GENERATE REVENUE AND EVENTUALLY RETURN OF INVESTMENT.

THE MEGA CITY WOULD SPAN 33 KM ON A BASE OF 250 METERS REACHING 150 METERS UP INTO THE SKY UTILIZING THE EXISTING DYKE STRUCTURE AND MINIMIZING THE AMOUNT OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND CIRCULATION.

AN ECO-TRAIN RUNNING ALONG THE SPAN OF THE CITY WOULD CONNECT GUNSAN INDUSTRIAL ZONE WITH A NATIONAL PARK. AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AT INCHEON WOULD BE CONSIDERED WITHIN THE CITY‛S STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT.

A NEW HIGHWAY WAS TO BRING VEHICLE TRAFFIC TO THE MAIN NORTHERN ENTRY OF THE LINEAR CITY.

TOURISM WOULD BE THE FIRST INDUSTRY TO BRING LIFE TO THE LINEAR CITY.

THROUGH A SERIES OF PHASES THE LINEAR MEGA CITY WOULD BECOME MORE THAN A TRADITIONAL CITY... IT WOULD BE THE CITY OF THE FUTURE.

OPENINGS USED AS WIND TUNNELS GENERATE ELECTRICITY FOR THE CITY.

MULTIPLE LEVELED SURFACES PROVIDE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE RETREATS IN OPEN AIR

NEW INFRASTRUCTURE TAKES PLACE ON TOP OF EXISTING

FARMANIEH MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT, TEHRAN, IRAN IN COLLABORATION WITH SAMAN HOSSEINIPOUR 2006-2011

farmanieh farmanieh [MIXED [MIXED USE] developmENT developmENT MIXED USE] USE

I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT AT A BRAIN-STORMING, DESIGN AND VISUALIZATION LEVEL ONLY AND I HAVE NOT TAKEN PART IN THE INVESTOR/ ARCHITECT NEGOTIATIONS. THE ORIGINAL IDEA WAS BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF IRANIAN CINEMA, ITS CULTURAL SPECIFICITY OF SOCIAL INTERACTION AND LOCAL DEMOGRAPHICS. THE INVESTORS WERE DEDICATED TO PROVIDE THE CITY OF TEHRAN WITH A NEW TYPE OF PUBLIC SPACE DEDICATED TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION.

THIS PARTICULAR GATHERING SPOT WAS TO MERGE THE INNATE IRANIAN ASPIRATION TOWARDS THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT, FACILITATED THROUGH THE DESIRE FOR OPEN COMMUNICATION.

PROGRAMMATICALLY IT WOULD CONTAIN THEATRES, GALLERY AND PERFORMANCE SPACES, AS WELL AS BOOK AND MUSIC STORES

THIS SPACE WOULD SERVE AS A HUB FOR THE IRANIAN INDEPENDENT FILM ORGANIZATION TO COMMUNICATE LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.

! w o p THE PROJECT PREMISE WAS NOT APPROVED

AND IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON….

..AND ENDED UP WITH:

FABRICATING CUSTOM STEEL PANELS WITH PUNCHED CUSTOM-DESIGN PATTERNS FOR THE FRONT BAR AREA

USING THE “GREENEST” WALL PAPER REFERRED TO BY INTERIOR DESIGN MAGAZINE IN 2009

DESIGNING A CHANDELIER FOR THE ENTRY HALL COMPLEMENTING THE METAL PANELS

ENDLESS SAMPLING FOR THE METAL PANELS-WALL PAINT-LED COLOR CONFIGURATIONS

..AND CUSTOM GOLDEN/RED METALLIC CURTAIN FOR THE DINING ROOM

EVOLO SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION 2010

CONTROLled CONTROLled GRAVITY GRAVITY STATION STATION

It was a time when, unable to reach out to the stars to find a new home, human hopes turned back to earth and recognized it as their last chance for survival.

THE SCENARIO:

The impact of international conversion and globalization had not erased the remaining ethnical conflicts, economic mismatches, and technological differences. The struggle for global domination led to an even faster exhaustion of available natural resources, sped up the green-house effect which in turn brought destructive impacts to all rural areas, overpopulation in the urban centers, and an extreme need to reconsider what’s left available: water, land and clean air. The old ways of designing human habitats had failed miserably. The only viable solution was to bring what was once envisioned as a bright future in the outerspace utopia onto earth and give it a final test in order to preserve human civilization. In that pursuit to recondition the human environment, nature and science merged to build the ultimate machinic organism. Conceptually similar to the 20th century skyscrapers, those structures would not only use economies of space, height, and symbolic definition of the city, but also help re-organize, re-vitalize and enhance the already existing urban landscapes. The CGS [Controlled Gravity Stations] would hover above ground and like self-sufficient organisms would be able to generate the power to sustain their own heartbeat. They would also be used as filtering stations for the cities as each one of the CGS would be modified to meet the needs of the particular metropolis it is inserted in.

THE PARAMETRIC RECONFIGURATION OF THE 2D 20TH CENTURY SYSTEM OF STREET BASED CIRCULATION WAS ENHANCED BY THE PROVISION OF THE TECHNO-ORGANIC CGS FEEDING A NOW MORE SPATIALLY INTERACTIVE METROPOLIS WITH FULLY INTEGRATED 3D CIRCULATION ENCOMPASSING RESIDENCES, PARKS, OFFICES, ETC., GENERATING SELFGRAVITY, ELECTRICITY, CLEAN AIR, FOOD AND WATER

USING VORONOI DIAGRAMS AS A PRECISE DECOMPOSITION OF THE LINEAR SPACE DETERMINED BY MINIMAL DISTANCES BETWEEN SPECIFIED DISCRETE SETS OF POINTS PROVIDED THE GROUND-WORK FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF THE CGS INTO THE CITY-GRID OF MANHATTAN.

THIS WAS THE PERFECT PROJECT TO EXPLORE A FUTURISTIC SCENARIO WHERE BUILDINGS ARE NO LONGER STATIC, FIXED, BUT COMPLEX, ADAPTABLE AND INHERENTLY SMART, SELF-CONSCIOUS MACHINES THAT PROVIDE FOR BETTER LIVING.

THIS IS NOT LE CORBUSIER‛S MACHINE FOR LIVING.

NO!!!!

CGS IS A SPACESHIP HOVERING IN BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS‛ AIRSPACE CONNECTING TO THEM RE-DEFINING THEIR PERFORMANCE, USAGE AND LIFE-SPAN

THE DESIGN IS THE ULTIMATE RESULT OF ANIME INSPIRED VISIONS WHERE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY MERGES WITH THE EXISTING LOW-TECH ENVIRONMENT. THE INTENT WAS TO CHALLENGE NOT ONLY THE TYPOLOGY OF THE SKYSCRAPER (I NEVER LIKED THAT BUILDING TYPOLOGY – SO IT WAS A RESPECTIVE CHALLENGE TO ME) BUT ALSO TO TEST THE CONCEPT OF A BUILDING AND ITS POSITION IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE

THE WHOLE IDEA OF HAVING TO DESTROY NATURE TO BUILD UP SHED FOR INHABITATION SEEMS WRONG YET INEVITABLE.

THE FACT THAT METROPOLISES OF OUR TIME ARE ALREADY OVER POPULATED, POLLUTED, AND INESCAPABLY HIGHLY DESIRABLE PLACES TO LIVE IN PROVES THAT THERE SHOULD BE A NEW STRATEGY TO COUNTERACT THE CLASSIC APPROACH TO

CONSTRUCTION

LAND RECLAMATION

GENTRIFICATION

AND SPRAWLING

THUS THE CONTROLLED GRAVITY PROJECT TAKES ON THE SCI-FI SCENARIO TO PROPOSE THE INCORPORATION OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY INTO ARCHITECTURE IT IS ALSO A TAKE ON THE SPECULATIVE FANTASIES WHICH INSINUATE THE EXTINCTION OF HUMAN KIND.

IT IS AN ATTEMPT TO REVERT THE NEGATIVE PERSPECTIVE THROUGH THE MINDSET THAT WE ALREADY HAVE THE ANSWERS – WE JUST HAVE TO SEE THEM.

APOCALYPSE IS USUALLY THE TOPIC PREFERRED FOR FUTURISTIC DESIGNS SINCE THERE ARE NO LIMITS BUT THERE ARE NO LIMITS IN AVOIDING IT EITHER.

I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN DESIGN FOR A BETTER FUTURE WITH SMARTER STRUCTURES, MORE VERSATILE MATERIALS, AND MORE INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS THAT ARE MEANT TO AUGMENT AND ENHANCE THE INHERENTLY FRAGILE AND UNSTABLE HUMAN CONDITION.

I OPPOSE AND DISAGREE WITH THE DARK, NEGATIVE VISIONS OF THE FUTURE AND HOPE THAT DESPITE ALL OF WHAT IS SAID AND WHAT IS HAPPENING THERE IS STILL HOPE THAT WE CAN BRING THE BEST OUT OF OUR MAN-MADE ENVIRONMENT.
