Open to Intermediate/Advanced Artists Work with renowned painter Bill Scott to explore the sensuous yet thoughtful abstract construction of space. Color will be the focus as participants paint from an expansive still life environment. Known for his complex and gorgeously rich abstract paintings based on nature, Scott has had many solo exhibitions in Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco and London, and has received numerous honors and awards. ThE DYNAMIC lANDSCAPE WITh JOhN MACDONAlD Open to all Levels

Learn to utilize photographs, sketches, and/or plein air studies executed on location to create dynamic paintings in the studio. Explore the uses and limitations of photographs as reference material, as well as methods of enlarging studies and sketches for larger studio paintings. Be guided through the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: building an effective composition, working with value and color, and finishing with sensitively chosen details. Emphasis will be placed on seeing and manipulating color and tonal relationships. Each day will include a lecture and demonstration, followed by painting with one-onone instruction. MONOTYPE WORKShOP WITh STUART ShIlS Open to Intermediate/Advanced Artists of All Media Experience the joys and possibilities of monotype printmaking with an emphasis on color and abstraction in the shaping of the visual image. Through the monotype process, students will understand pictorial structure (design) and mood as the keys to visual coherence and graphic strength. Working from window views and in-studio drawings, learn to capture the essence of places and moments through color and form, exploring the intimate relationship between observation and abstract structure. REfRAMING ThE ORDINARY WITh STUART ShIlS:  ShAPING VISUAl PRESENCE ON ThE STREETS Of PhIlADElPhIA

Open to all Levels Join esteemed PAFA faculty member Patricia Traub in this unique bird-drawing workshop. Focused drawing studies of bird anatomy and feather structure will supplement work from live avian subjects, including both seed-eating varieties and birds of prey, provided by the Academy of Natural Sciences. Referencing Old Master drawing techniques, students will work in graphite, charcoal, colored chalk, and pastel on toned papers. Includes a discussion of methods to make finished paintings beyond the workshop by using gesture drawing and studies in combination with photography. Learn to see the extraordinary in the ordinary by drawing directly from your surroundings in Old City, Philadelphia. Cultivate the perceptual tools of rapid visual summation and notation to capture the light, form and feeling of place in the city’s historic streets. Use the camera as a viewfinder and analyze the structure of photographs as means to enhance and inform direct perception. Related activities include training memory, examining how to select motifs for working, and learning to identify what makes one place more interesting than another as subject matter. Work of great masters from the past and present will serve as guides for class activity. AllA PRIMA STIll lIfE WITh ChRISTINE lAfUENTE Open to all Levels Brooklyn-based painter and PAFA alum Christine Lafuente considers her paintings “poetic responses to visual experience.” Responding to the still life motif, learn how to build an oil painting directly, with the emphasis on color. The workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, followed by painting sessions in which students will be guided through a series of focused procedures: composing a painting and establishing tonal design, mixing color, achieving harmony and palette organization, applying large color masses, and using principles of oil viscosity to build form into wet-into-wet painting. The Summer Academy for Teachers is designed to renew and invigorate teachers, as well as provide a reserve of project ideas for the new school year and personal artistic practice. Open to artists and educators of all levels. Available for Pennsylvania Department of Education Act 48 hours and New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Credit.

If you are new to art, taking classes but unsure of your artistic direction, or returning to art after a long absence, the CE Core Curriculum Program is for you. Composed of eight CE classes spanning PAFA’s core disciplines, this structured curriculum will build your basic skills and the confidence necessary to move forward in any artistic direction. IMAGE TRANSfER WORKShOP Lisa Sylvester Image transfer is the process of taking a pre-existing printed image and transferring it from one surface onto another, widely used by many artists from the past and present. PRINTMAKING fOR TEAChERS Tony Rosati Bring printmaking into the classroom with easy-toclean-up water-based inks and processes that do not require a press. Create screenprints using paper stencils, reduction printing, and monotype techniques. Explore relief printing through multiple block and reduction processes. SUMMER STUDIO CRITIQUE PROGRAM JULY 10 – AUGUST 18 Designed for artists and educators who desire constructive feedback on their artwork as well as the support and interaction of an artistic community. Registration includes a private studio in the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building, and individual Friday critiques from a stellar ensemble of nationally and internationally known artists, including members of the PAFA’s acclaimed faculty. Lead critic Neysa Grassi will hold group critiques, discussion and field trips.

JODI ThROCKMORTON is PAFA’s Curator of Contemporary Art. Previously she served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University and the Associate Curator at the San Jose Museum of Art. She holds an MFA in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University, and a BA in Art History and French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

ANDA DUbINSKIS received an MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Drawing Coordinator in the Visual Arts Department of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design at Drexel University. Her figurative paintings have won numerous awards including fellowships from the National Endowment on the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, as well as a Leeway Grant. Her work has been exhibited extensively both locally and nationally.

JAN  bAlTzEll is a faculty member of PAFA’s Certificate and Graduate Programs, and the Interim Graduate Program Chair. Her painterly abstractions display a master’s control of contrasting mark-making that transcends the viewer’s conventional vocabulary. Her work is included in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. She is represented by Schmidt Dean Gallery in Philadelphia.

NEYSA GRASSI is a recipient of a Pew Fellowship and has had solo exhibitions at several museums, including the Pensacola Art Museum in Florida and PAFA. Since 1990 she has had numerous solo exhibitions in galleries in Philadelphia and New York. She is a critic in PAFA’s MFA program and is represented by Locks Gallery, Philadelphia.

bRUCE  SAMUElSON is a faculty member of PAFA’s BFA and Graduate Programs. Informed by the principles of Old Master draftsmanship, Samuelson’s drawings and paintings expand beyond traditional methods of representation to arrive at elegant meditations on the human form. He has exhibited in over thirty solo exhibitions and his work is represented in numerous public and private collections including PAFA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Woodmere Art Museum. Samuelson is represented by J. Cacciola galleries, New York.

CElIA REISMAN is a Philadelphia-based artist who has had solo exhibitions in Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco and London among other locations, including a Fifteen Year Survey Exhibition at the James A. Michener Art Museum. She has taught at Swarthmore College, Dartmouth College, and other schools, and most recently was a Visiting Critic at PAFA. She is represented by Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, the Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco/New York, and Big Town Gallery in Rochester, Vermont.

bOOK IllUSTRATION NEW! Kate Samworth Learn the fundamentals of picture book illustration, including character and storyboard development, narrative and sequential drawing, and book design/ layout. Draw inspiration from book illustration over the centuries, from illuminated manuscripts to contemporary examples. Complete preparatory studies and finished illustrations based on published or personal text in graphite, colored pencil, and various water-media. COURSE TUITION  AND fEES

Undergraduate Credit Courses meeting contact hour requirements (30 hours minimum) are available for 1.0, 1.5 or 3.0 undergraduate credit, not including lunch breaks. If taken for credit, you may incur additional coursework, and will receive a course grade and appropriate credit that will appear on an official PAFA transcript, if requested. To request an official transcript, visit CE Registration and Policy Information at pafa.org/transcript to download a transcript request form. Changes in credit status must be arranged through the CE office prior to the second class. No refunds can be issued for changes from credit to non-credit.

30 contact hours: $395 non-credit; $525 for 1.0 undergraduate credit 36 contact hours: $495 non-credit; $625 for 1.0 undergraduate credit 40 contact hours: $525 non-credit; $695 for 1.5 undergraduate credits 45 contact hours: $595 non-credit; $950 for 1.5 undergraduate credits

Tuition varies for Short Courses, One Week Intensives, Workshops, Lectures, Seminars, Master Classes and Special Programs. Please refer individual course/workshop descriptions.

For Pennsylvania & New Jersey K-12 Educators PAFA is approved to provide Pennsylvania Act 48 hours and New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Credit for its courses and workshops. Courses and workshops are eligible for the number of contact hours for which they meet (excluding lunch breaks). Educators electing to receive PA Act 48 or NJ Professional Development Credit should notify the Continuing Education Programs office when registering. Please note, Pennsylvania educators must provide their 6-digit Professional Educator Identification Number.

Full payment is due at the time of registration. PAFA cannot prorate courses for late registration, withdrawals or missed classes. Lab and Material Fees Please consult individual course descriptions for any applicable lab or materials fees. Late Fee Registrations received after 5 p.m. on their deadline date may be assessed a late fee of $25. Locker Rental Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $25. Locker rental is not available for weekend workshops.
