BRAND STORY : TIFFANY & CO.

In June 2018, Tiffany & Co. will celebrate a landmark relocation of its Hawaii flagship store from Luxury Row to a new boutique anchoring the Royal Hawaiian Center at the prominent corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Lewers Street. Upon completion, the new store will boast 3 floors of retail space that covers more than 7,000 square feet, making it the largest Tiffany & Co. store of all 4 Hawaii locations. The additional floor space allows an even broader range of collections to be showcased, such as Tiffany HardWear, Tiffany T, Home & Accessories, Timepieces, and of course, a large assortment of Tiffany engagement and celebration rings. Its layout and atmosphere will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. The jeweler has built a special home here in paradise and to honor that, many of the abstract design elements and color palettes used in the renovation draw inspiration directly from the islands. Although the planning process had been years in the making, the project officially broke ground in September 2017, coinciding with a fantastic first year for Tiffany’s newly appointed Chief Artistic Officer, Reed Krakoff. Renowned for his global contributions to fashion, design, and the arts, Reed’s award-winning career has gifted him with the talent, creativity, and expertise needed to propel Tiffany & Co. forward as a global house of luxury.

26

To truly appreciate this milestone relocation, let’s take a look back to where it all started nearly two centuries ago. On September 14, 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young opened the doors to a small stationery and fancy goods store at 259 Broadway in New York City. As modest as their initial earnings were, it did little to discourage the two budding entrepreneurs as it was an era teeming with opportunity and growth for those who had an ambitious imagination and the sheer grit needed to prosper in the greatest metropolis in the world. During the remainder of the 19th century, Tiffany & Co. went on to receive its first international accolades at the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, cementing its status as the premier purveyor of jewels. In the years and centuries to come, Tiffany & Co. not only continued to push boundaries, but break through them, continuously setting new benchmarks for excellence along the way. One of these feats includes the cutting of the world’s largest and finest canary yellow diamond into an unprecedented 82 facets—24 more than a traditional round brilliant, giving it its legendary fire and brilliance. Aptly named the Tiffany Diamond, the stone became the embodiment of Tiffany craftsmanship. Another momentous accomplishment is the creation and introduction of the engagement ring as we know it today. By lifting the stone up above the band and into the light, Mr. Tiffany was not only able to better highlight the brilliant cut diamond, but also create an icon and symbol of true love. Today, the company continues to uphold the rigorous standards and steadfast commitment to quality craftsmanship upon which it was founded. The new flagship location at Royal Hawaiian Center will be a shining example of excellence, both inside and out, welcoming current and future generations of Tiffany & Co. loyalists for years to come.

The History of the Aloha Shirt Painted with dynamic colors and tropical patterns, nothing says “Hawaii” quite like the Aloha shirt. Although its Polynesian motifs and simple, colorful designs were inspired by the Tahitian pareo, its history is also rich with Japanese influence since many tailor shops in downtown Honolulu were owned by Asian immigrants in the 1920s and 30s. During this time, silk and cotton Aloha shirts featuring Japanese prints became wildly popular thanks to Chinese-American merchant Ellery Chun, who registered the trademark for the term “Aloha shirt” in 1937. After World War II, business attire in Hawaii shifted from European-style jackets and ties to open-collared shirts, which were more suitable for the warm Hawaiian climate. The 1950s became known as the Golden Age of Aloha shirts, where more complex patterns made of rayon entered production full-swing. The shirts from this era are still highly coveted by collectors to this day. In the 1960s, Aloha shirts gained acceptance as typical summer business attire. Around this time, veteran brand “Reyn Spooner” began creating button-down Aloha shirts with a tailored inner lining, which ultimately became the standard for Hawaii businessmen. In the 1970s, it was trendy to find vintage Aloha shirts from the 50s in secondhand clothing stores and by the 1980s, Aloha shirts captured international interest when designers, such as Yves Saint Laurent, began incorporating Hawaiian prints into their luxury fashion lines. Expensive brand name Aloha shirts emerged in the 1990s, making it Hawaii’s signature look. The Aloha shirt is now widely appreciated as a symbol of the Aloha spirit, as it was created in tandem with the multicultural evolution of the Hawaiian Islands.

Waikiki Map

An easy way to navigate Waikiki is by identifying its major

roads. Kalakaua Avenue (running parallel to Waikiki Beach

towards Diamond Head) is Waikiki's primary shopping spot, lined with storefronts and bustling with people. On the

other hand, Kuhio Avenue can be thought of as the main

route for TheBus while the walkway along Ala Wai Canal is a great place for a stroll. Remember, there are many one-way streets within Waikiki so people with rental cars should be cautious while driving.
