BEST OVERNIGHT SUMMER CAMP In its 11th year, Camp Soulajoule at Walker Creek Ranch continues to offer an amazing ďŹ ve-day experience for 8- to 12-year-old campers. Set amid 1,700-plus acres of riparian habitat and beautiful bay laurels (soulajoule is the Miwok name for the tree), the camp is an outgrowth of Walker Creek Ranch’s long-running outdoor education program for Marin students. Fresh food comes from Walker Creek’s organic garden as well as local farmers markets—deliciously prepared,

the fare is a far cry from the stuff so many of us were served at camp decades ago. Campers participate in a number of activities—canoeing, swimming, music, community gatherings, etc., all under the direction of the professional naturalist staff—that are so enjoyable, they don’t realize how much they’re learning. It’s a unique experience, in our own “backyard.â€? As camp director Claudia Lyons says, “Hiking to the top of Walker Peak, with views of Tomales Bay and the PaciďŹ c Ocean, is life-changing—for all ages.â€? ---------------------------------------------Camp Soulajoule

BEST PET GROOMER

Somebody said to me, “But the Beatles were anti-materialistic. That’s a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, “Now, let’s write a swimming pool. – Paul

Twin sisters Janine Schengel and Melinda Bowser (yes, real name) are a little surprised that their shop, Doggie Styles, has once again been voted Best Pet Groomer in Marin because “we never ask people to vote for us and we don’t vote for ourselves, Schengel says. “I’m really blown away by it. Her sister adds: “I’m so humbled that people take the time to do it. On the other hand, the sisters know all too well how passionate Marinites are about their pets, and they’ve built their reputation by taking exceptional care of all those pups. “I love that people here love their dogs so much, Schengel says. Her favorite Beatles song is “Let It Be, but of course those are not words of wisdom that work with many dog breeds whose coats need regular professional attention to stay
