et me point out that I think the city of Novato is a fine place. They have the only Target in Marin and that quaint red church off the DeLong exit. What’s not to like? So, I don’t want to cause a mass exodus, but if you live in a Novato condo and are having trouble getting more than a second date with a potential soul mate, I may have identified your problem. Apparently, condos that far north of the Golden Gate Bridge just aren’t sexy. My cousin’s wife’s best friend’s brother Patrick is a striking man. His soft, loose blonde curls, green eyes and hard body send my heart and other regions fluttering. A job in the wine industry, a nice sense of humor and the gift of gab make him even more attractive. At 36, he finally decided it was time to settle down. For almost three years, he tried to find the right woman in the usual ways. Internet, introductions by friends, bar hopping. Several times he thought he might have found her, but he couldn’t get beyond a couple of dates. He called his sister Adrienne frequently to discuss his woes. In her opinion, Patrick is emotionally and financially ready for a fulfilling relationship leading to marriage and children. (Oh, if only I were a few years younger or had cougar tendencies.) “He’s a sweet guy and has a healthy respect for women,” Adrienne told me. “I really couldn’t figure it out.” Good thing Patrick did. He claims that as soon as women found out he lived in a condo in Novato, they became disinterested. They would all say the same things: “It’s so far from the city.” “There’s nothing to do in the suburbs.” “It’s kind of like Fresno out here.” A few accepted another date after actually seeing his place, but always ended up canceling. “I guess they decided it wasn’t worth it, since I was geographically undesirable,” Patrick said. After a great second date with Jeannie, the two texted, communicated on Facebook and chatted on the phone. They made plans to get together again, but she was going out of town for the weekend, so the next date was two weeks away. Patrick was thrilled when Jeannie called that Friday to say she was on her way from the city to Sea Ranch and wanted to stop by to say hello. When she arrived, he gave her a tour of his two-bedroom, two-bath townhouse and thought she seemed impressed. They spent 30 minutes relaxing on his balcony with a couple of cans of Dr.

Pepper and then she was back on the road. Despite his calls and e-mails, Patrick never heard from her. That’s when he had his eureka moment. “I have to move out of Novato,” he declared. He hit craigslist and found an apartment in San Francisco, the Marina, of course. Then he rented out his condo in Novato to another poor, single sap who will probably never get a third date. No more homeowner’s tax deductions and no more ample parking for visitors— all for the sake of dating. Patrick doesn’t care, because he claims his love life has vastly improved. “I tested it,” he said. “I posted on Facebook that I moved to the Marina and own rental property in Marin. Jeannie and another woman that stopped seeing me both called.” I ask if his apartment is more tastefully furnished, but it turns out he brought the condo stuff. Perhaps he’s more confident, believing he’s now geographically desirable. He says he feels the same, only he has more dates. Are some women truly that shallow? He’s a homeowner for goodness’ sake. Is it that embarrassing to tell your girlfriends you’re dating someone in Novato? Petaluma maybe, but Novato is still Marin. Digging deeper, I discover that Patrick, though 39, dates women in their 20s. His reason for dating younger women is that he watched his sister and friends marry in their mid- to late-30s and believes they were immediately under pressure from the ticking biological clock. He’d prefer to spend his newlywed years having fun. Nice rationalization, cradle robber. I grant you that younger, single women tend to choose the city as their playground, but I’m still not convinced that a Novato condo is the reason they stopped dating Patrick. I also found out he’s never had a long-term relationship. Maybe these young women sensed his inexperience or eagerness to dive right in? All of you single, 30-something men living in nice Novato condos, don’t follow Patrick’s lead just yet. Try dating women closer to your own age. I think you’ll find they appreciate your homeowner status. San Francisco is an amazing city, but there’s a reason we all ended up in this paradise called Marin. < E-mail nikki_silverstein@yahoo.com

The ‘torture’ jokes are just way too obvious here, so we’ll stick with the facts: From left, the Brothers Gibb, Nancy Sinatra, Britney Spears, the Sesame Street gang, Marilyn Manson.

Apparently, the prison guards weren’t lacking in situational irony. During one 10-hour interrogation, documents show that suspected terrorist Mohamedou Ould Slahi was assailed nonstop with a light show and a loud recording of Drowning Pool’s hard-rock anthem “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor.” Central Intelligence Agency spokesman George Little told the Associated Press that the CIA used music only for security, “not for punitive purposes—and at levels [79 decibels] far below a live rock band.” Law enforcement agencies have been using this tactic for years, with mixed results: In 1993, the FBI blasted an eclectic playlist—including Tibetan chants, bugle calls, Christmas carols and Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”—at

the besieged Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, in an attempt to unhinge the renegade religious cult. A decade later, the government reprised the tactic. “Guantanamo is known around the world as one of the places where human beings have been tortured—from waterboarding to stripping, hooding and forcing detainees into humiliating sexual acts—playing music for 72 hours in a row at volumes just below that to shatter the eardrums,” Tom Morello noted. “Guantanamo may be Dick Cheney’s idea of America, but it’s not mine. “The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me—we need to end torture and close Guantanamo now.” < Hum a few bars for Greg at gcahill51@gmail.com.

›› SPiN OF THE WEEK American Horizon (www.themockingbirds.info) Los Cenzontles One of the year’s best world-music albums teams seasoned roots stars Taj Mahal and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos with the relatively unknown East Bay band Los Cenzontles (the Mockingbirds) on a self-produced album of engaging, mostly Spanish-language songs that incorporate rock and blues with such traditional Mexican forms as the cumbia (with an added dash of Hidalgo’s inspired experimentalism). The finely crafted songs tell touching tales of hope, struggle and the American Dream. The result is a milestone in modern Latin music. Little wonder that the band, which grew out of the Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, has attracted such collaborators as Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Herbie Hancock, Flea and the Chieftains.—GC

Woody Allen wrote WHATEVER WORKS for Zero Mostel at the height of his powers in the Annie Hall ‘70s, and we owe the film’s modern incarnation to the director’s fear of a SAG strike last year—that, and to Mostel’s untimely death in 1977. Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David steps bravely into the great comic’s shoes and aside from a thrown-in reference to Obama, it’s pretty much the fascinating time capsule it should be. David plays ex-quantum mechanic Boris Yellnikoff, a wracked pessimist who’s become a recluse in lower-Manhattan’s Chinatown, dealing misanthropic truth-doses to any and all who’ll listen. When a waifish Mississippi belle turns up at his doorstep hungry and desperate, Boris takes her in on a strictly temporary basis—until a day-trip to Grant’s Tomb together hints at something more. David’s ranting Yellnikoff has all the emotional range of a tuning fork, which is kind of the point: As he warns us through the fourth wall early on,“This is not the feel-good movie of the year...so if you’re one of those idiots who needs to feel good, go get yourself a foot massage.—Richard Gould

Week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4, 2009

by Ly nd a R ay ARIES (March 20 - April 19) The empathetic Moon is in your sign for Halloween, making you overly sensitive to the woes of others. You should avoid costumes that require a heartless demeanor. Meanwhile, stern Saturn has entered Libra. Your primary relationships (personal and professional) are about to weigh you down with responsibility. Sorry. Running away with the circus is not an option. TAURUS (April 20 - May 19) It’s togetherness time as communication flows smoothly between you and Sweetie. You may even agree on Halloween costumes portraying a famous couple. On Monday, a Full Moon in your sign makes you delightfully mushy. No disguise necessary. Just be your usual sensual self... GEMINI (May 20 - June 20) Try as you may to enjoy the lighthearted fun of having hedonistic Venus in your house of creativity and romance, you can’t quite succeed. (Although that Aphrodite Halloween costume is very impressive—especially on the male Gemini.) You want to know why you’ve lost your sense of playfulness? Grumpy Saturn just moved into your house of self-expression. Goodbye carefree. Hello worrywart. CANCER (June 21 - July 21) Chances are you won’t be in the mood for Halloween festivities. A planetary showdown begins between the karmic planets of Saturn and Pluto, leaving you feeling a bit unsociable for most of the week. On the other hand, once disguised, you can be as unfriendly as you like without anyone knowing it is you. I know you are particularly sensitive to this new and difficult dynamic. Nevertheless, toughen up or suffer. LEO (July 22 - August 22) There’s rarely a Halloween goes by where you pass up the chance to play a role. Choose a character and immerse yourself in an alternate identity. You’re born to act even if you only do it once a year. You remain in an intensely creative and passionate frame of mind all week. Retaining your S&M costume is optional, but arriving at work wearing leather and whips may be risky. VIRGO (August 23 - September 21) As your ruler (I-want-to-be-flexible Mercury) occupies the compulsive sign of Scorpio, you can’t help being opinionated and fixated. What you’re fixated on, I couldn’t tell you, but you’re definitely more dogmatic than diplomatic right now. (Costume ideas include famous dictators and right-wing radio hosts.) Monday’s Full Moon lights up your trendy knowledge house. Put down the historical novel and pick up a Vanity Fair. LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) No matter what costume you design for Halloween, you’ll likely be a popular guest at any party. You’ve got a unique way of entertaining people this week that both charms and inspires everyone. Meantime, an intense conversation with a pal on Sunday turns into a stubborn standoff. Please back down. You’re heading into a fourmonth phase of challenging times and you will need all the friends you can get. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Halloween. Well, it is a holiday that you can appreciate, right? You can disguise your identity, dress as eerily as you like, and no one will notice. OK. Your disguise will be blown if you take off your mask to blow out your birthday candles, so decide which is more important: staying in costume or eating cake. As for Monday’s Full Moon, it may expose how you really feel about your relationship. If you’re not ready to share this, find a new disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 20) Because of daring Mars in your exploration house, a Halloween costume with an adventurous theme is recommended. Any of the superheroes, naturally, or if you prefer to be more literal, then go for a real pioneer of exploring, like Amelia Earhart or Charles Lindbergh. (Interesting how there are no contemporary figures to emulate this way, isn’t it?) Meanwhile, judgmental Saturn just entered your friendship house. If any of your pals are a waste of time, Saturn will weed them out. Time to purge your contact list. CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 18) This Halloween finds you in the spirit of things. The presence of mysterious Pluto in your sign makes you the likely candidate for indulging in spooky activities. Warning: Don’t get too carried away while at work. Now that stern Saturn is in your career house, your boss has no sense of humor. On Monday, the luscious Full Moon in the sensual sign of Taurus could make romantic escapades quite pleasurable. Regretfully, your boss is still being a grump. Save it for after hours. AQUARIUS (January 19 - February 17) Don’t miss any of the Halloween parties. There’s potential for fun, romance, adventure and forbidden pleasure. (And that’s before you get out of the taxi in your outrageous costume.) Fiery Mars brings possible upsets and heated encounters with your sweetheart. If you’re smart, you will transform this into passion. By the end of the week, imaginative Neptune moves forward again in your sign. Why deal with reality when fantasy is so much more fun? PISCES (February 18 - March 19) With two amazing planets in your house of imagination, you should once again excel at coming up with the perfect Halloween disguise. Having the innate potential for being either saint or sinner gives you the best options—whether the party theme is heaven, hell or a hedonistic purgatory. Monday’s Full Moon may bring up an emotional issue with a sibling. If you just saw your sister’s ex-husband arm-in-arm with a glamorous model, don’t mention it. < E-mail Lynda Ray at cosmicclues@gmail.com or check out her Web site at www.lyndarayastrology.com OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 5, 2009 PACIFIC SUN 33

Q:

I’m 39, married four years to a woman I dated for two. She’s the mother of my two stepchildren, 13 and 16. The problem is I may be in love with a girl from high school, the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I’ve always felt she was the one I was meant to be with. She was popular, I was not. Still, I can’t honestly say that if I’d asked her out, she’d have said no. I wrote her love letters and sent roses on her birthday, which she called to thank me for. I think and dream about her frequently. At my high school reunion, I heard she’s single. She’s my Facebook friend, and I wanted to say hi, but she’s never on. Yesterday, my dream about her was so emotional that I nearly woke up in tears. I love my wife, but she’s more like my best friend. Should I let this affect my marriage? Could I, should I, pursue the woman of my dreams?— Pining

A:

You’re seriously wondering whether you should let this “affect” your marriage? “Hey, Honey, it’s been real, but I heard from this drunk guy at my reunion that my high school crush is single and hot as ever. No...I haven’t slept with her. Or seen her. Or spoken with her for 20 years. But, I friended her on Facebook, and I just can’t keep denying she’s my soul mate after learning she ‘had a great workout and is headed out for some yummies and cocktails!!!’” You aren’t in love with her; you’re in love with being the kind of guy who gets a girl like her. You’ll do anything to pretend this could be a reality, like Sorry, but once you have kids, telling yourself you can’t honestly say the hot popular girl wouldn’t by birth or by marriage, you can’t have gone out with you, if only just jump ship because you spotted you’d asked. Sure. Just as you can’t something glittery in the water. honestly say your dog won’t wake up tomorrow and speak Greek. Boohoo, are you not completely fulfilled? Sorry, but once you have kids, by birth or by marriage, you can’t just jump ship because you spotted something glittery in the water. Of course Crushgirl’s more appealing than your wife—or any real woman. As a creation of your high school imagination, she never gets her period or PMS. She never wants you to turn off the game or stop bugging her for sex or take out the garbage. And remember those vows you took? I’m guessing they weren’t “Do you take this placeholder until the girl you really love Facebooks you back?” This is the life you’ve chosen; you can keep clocking out of it or take pride in making it the best you can. Whenever you feel like taking a toke off the high-school hottie pipe, go find your wife and tell her she’s beautiful and how much she means to you. Try that on your crush, and you’re effectively confessing, “For 23 years, I’ve been stalking you in my head.” But, hey, with any luck, you can get your divorce decree on the same day as the restraining order.

Q:

For two years, I wanted to marry the woman I was dating. She wants to be married but said she’d never have strong enough feelings for me. I guess I assumed she’d never “waste” years with me unless she secretly thought I might be Mr. Right.—Frustrated

A:

If you say to a woman, “I wonder what our kids will look like,” it’s kind of a bad sign if she says, “Yeah, me too, and if your kids will end up playing with my kids.” Unlike all the people who string romantic partners along, this woman did right by you—giving you the gift of no hope. As for her “wasting” time, maybe she wants to marry but is content for now with the extended-stay one-night stand. When somebody tells you you’ll never get what you want, you have a choice: stick around and continue never getting it, or make tracks and seek it somewhere else. Sometimes, leaving can help your partner see a gaping hole in their life (and here’s hoping it isn’t because you tripped on the power cord to their media center when you stormed out). <
