WELCOME ‘Thank you for coming, and we hope you’ll make your visit to the San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival a yearly tradition!’

ON BEHALF OF the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, I want to welcome you to the 25th Annual San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival. We are thrilled to be presenting this award-winning event as a way to bring the local community together to enjoy premium wine, fine art, crafts, entertainment and gourmet food in the picturesque setting of San Anselmo. This year, we’ve turned our focus to collaborating with the community more than ever before. We wish to thank the generosity of the many non-profit organizations that are partnering with us this year: • San Anselmo Police Explorers for additional security and staffing. • San Anselmo Police Association is offering a food booth to raise funds for community services. • YES! School Foundation is hosting an art area to raise funds for children’s art and school activities.

• Marin Humane Society and Adam Cantor are providing a pet-retreat station with free chiropractic care to raise money for the Marin Humane Society. • St. Anselm’s Schools are utilizing parking lot fee proceeds to benefit the school. • San Anselmo Arts Commission is sponsoring and organizing the Community Art Pavilion, a special area dedicated to exhibiting community art and supporting local artisans. • San Anselmo Library booth will be selling books to benefit the library. We also wish to express our gratitude to the many local businesses who are getting involved this year, some of them for the first time, making this a real community event. We especially appreciate Bubba’s Diner, who will be hosting the first ever Bubba’s Pancake Breakfast to kick-off the festival. Bubba’s has generously offered to donate a portion of all proceeds from the breakfast to go toward supporting local non-profit agencies.

We also want to show our appreciation for our exemplary new event producer Chelley Dallara of Eckerstrom Productions, who has worked tirelessly to make the 2008 festival the most successful one yet. She has made a number of notable improvements to the event, such as applying a more rigorous jury process to select the highest-quality original art possible, putting the “wine” (and beer) back into the festival, signing more top-name entertainment, and more, to guarantee that you have the very best time possible. Our great appreciation and thanks go to our tremendously generous presenting sponsor, Pacific Gas & Electric, and to our festival sponsors: First Federal, Kashi, Marin Bicycle Coalition, the Pacific Sun, the Marin Independent Journal, Marriott, Moylan’s, Ross Valley Winery, San Anselmo Arts Commission, Sunnyside, United Market, and the Warriors. Last but not least, we wish to thank you, our attendees. Every year, you come out in record numbers to support our community event. Every time you purchase a work of art or a glass of wine, you’re helping our town. As the chamber’s largest fund-raising event of the year, all proceeds

of the festival go toward underwriting programs that bolster San Anselmo’s economy and support local businesses, including: emergency services, high-school internship programs, the biannual San Anselmo Business & Visitor’s Guide, business advertising programs, post-event sidewalk cleaning, the San Anselmo Holiday Gift Guide, Santa’s Holiday Lighting Festival, and much more. So thank you for coming, and we hope you’ll make your visit to the San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival a yearly tradition! To find out more about the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, the town of San Anselmo or how you can participate in next year’s festival, please visit: www.sananselmochamber.org or call 415-454-2510. —Connie Rodgers, President of the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce

COMMUNITY ART

MICHAEL FELDMAN

P A V I L I O N

ART AFICIONADOS will have their senses filled with a delightful display of the arts presented by The Ross Valley Arts Commission. More than 20 artists will be featured in the Community Art Pavilion in front of San Anselmo Town Hall, showcasing every discipline of art imaginable. According to Sylvie Reynolds with the commission, the line-up will include: Rembrandt-inspired still lives; large-scale Marin KATHLEEN LIPINSKI landscapes; animated progressive digital works; political visual statements; bright, enchanting flowers and gardens; sacred land digital composites; exquisite precious jewelry designs; botanical hand-painted European crystal and stemware; and delicate vessels, embarking the soul on imaginary journeys. “Marin has never offered such a varied and enlightening experience of art,” Reynolds points out. “You will enter an atmosphere that is inviting, vibrant, instructive and enriching. And you can buy exceptional art directly from the artists at the best prices.” The commission will also provide pottery wheel demonstrations from 11am to 1pm both days by Jonathon Bauen, with Miss (Dalene) Deli stepping in for the afternoon from 2 to 4pm. We can’t talk about every one of the fine artists but here is a sampling of some of those who will be on hand at the festival. ............................................................ Cindy A. Pavlinac is a fine art photographer, specializing in images conveying the beauty and mystery and power of place. She works on location in Europe and North America, photographing ancient sanctuaries and modern expressions of the sacred. Her images have won numerous awards and appeared in more than 600 publications, including as principal photographer for the books Labyrinths and Sanctuaries of the Goddess. She earned a master’s degree in arts and consciousness studies and a bachelor’s degree in fine art photography with a foreign study in Athens and Rome in archaeology. Pavlinac has been visiting special places ever since Apollo hollered at her in Delphi, Greece in 1977, striving to bridge the ancient with the modern and inspire people through images, words, music and performance. Her web site is www.sacred-land-photography.com. 4 S A N A N S E L M O A R T & W I N E F E S T I VA L 2 0 0 8

Michael Feldman is a San Anselmo artist with also owns a local gallery, specializing in nostalgic paintings of Marin street scenes and landscapes as well as still-life paintings and those of flowers. He can be found online at www.mfeldman.com. Rachele Nyssen is another artist who focuses on still life paintings. Nyssen says: “My still life paintings are quiet contemplations painted from life. Compositions and precious objects arranged to reveal subtle passages of air, rhythms of light and shadow – always in a quest for the essential and the beauty inherent in the ethereal nature of life.” Steve Emery is a 54-year-old Marin native, who draws his inspiration from the trails of Marin and the Sierra. The artist, who also coaches Drake High School joggers, runs 1,800 miles a year, often seeking the season-changing events: the spectacular, ethereal, and sensuous. He has a studio in the Isabel Cook Community Center, spends time with art students answering questions, and helps them on assignments as a guest artist. He has met nearly everyone who has collected his work and has held open studios annually since 1979. According to Emery: “I pursue one body of landscape work I refer to as ‘intimate portraits of landscape.’ Another full body of work takes off from the first, following artistic trails from these into another realm of shapes and colors, stories and history that I cannot represent in the first body.” Kathleen Lipinski has worked with images of California landscape for more than 25 years in painting, drawing and printmaking. “I love to walk the trails of Marin, being attentive to the seasons and the quality of light,” she says. “I then bring my observations into the solitude of my studio. When I paint, I reconnect with the sense of well-being I gain from being outdoors and hope that my feelings of respect and deep joy are transferred to canvas as I work.” Lipinski paints in both oils and acrylics. She has a bachelor’s degree in fine art and is co founder of the Santa Cruz Art Center. She can be found online at www.emerylipinski.com. Kim Kitz’s work is inspired by her desire to balance an increasingly fast-paced life with her passion for nature’s beauty. She employs visual language to understand and communicate its essence. She spends time exploring the different dimensions of landscape, physically and spiritually. She sketches directly from nature or life, photo references and memory-based drawings. Most of her work is multi-layered, overlapping elements, revealing images and colors from the layers beneath. She graduated from the Academy of Art University with a BFA in painting and drawing. v

VINOS

EATS

THE WINE is an important element at the festival. Souvenir wine and beer glasses are available for purchase and required for tasting at a cost of $5 each. They feature the special anniversary logo art with an art deco woman reminiscent of 1970s rock posters and offer a keepsake from the event. Enjoy fine wines from wineries such as: Fetzer, Firefly, BV, Mirassou, Chateau St. Michelle, Meridian, Ravenswood, Blackstone, Kendall Jackson, J. Lohr, Smoking Loon, Murphy Goode and more. The new Premium Wine Garden offers connoisseurs of fine wines a new experience to satisfy their palates at the festival. Sponsored by the Ross Valley Winery, some of the participating wineries include: Cahill Winery, Pt. Reyes Vineyard, Pacheco Ranch, Carica Wines and more. Carica Wines is a new Sonoma label with zesty wines. It takes its name from fig trees surrounding the Kick Ranch, where the wines are made. The Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County Kick Ranch 2006 is fresh and vibrant with concentrated peach, mango- and lime- juice flavors. The Syrah Sonoma County Kick Ranch is rich and intense with an elegant mouth feel and spicy, peppery wild berry notes that linger. Ross Valley Winery will be offering a barrel tasting of its 2006 Merlot wines as well. v

LIVE MUSIC & PERFORMERS Zoo Station: Is that U2? (Saturday, 11:30am to 1:45pm; Sunday 3:45 to 6pm)

If you have seen U2 you will think you are seeing double when you experience San Francisco-based tribute band Zoo Station. This group presents three decades of U2 in one show, spanning every era of U2. Zoo Station features: Bonalmost, lead vocals; The Sledge, lead guitar; Adamesque, bass and backup vocals; and Barely Larry, drums. With a repertoire of more than a hundred songs, Zoo Station has been recreating the magic of U2 at venues and special events. Complete with props, costumes and its look-alike band members, the band’s attention to detail and the love of the music has earned them a loyal following of U2 fans. To say lead singer Bonalmost looks and sounds like Bono is an under statement as Zoo Station tears through fan favorites from “I Will Follow” to “Vertigo.” According to Barely Larry, Zoo Station does everything it can to recreate the experience of seeing U2 live as well as throw in a few surprise songs that U2 no longer or never have played live.

Stung: It’s magic

The Sun Kings reunite the Beatles (Saturday, 1:30 to 3:30pm; Sunday, 4 to 6pm)

Ever wonder what the Beatles would have sounded like if they had reunited? The Sun Kings have been performing at festivals and clubs throughout Northern California and bring about the excitement of a real Beatles concert. The members of the tribute band all credit The Beatles as their biggest influence. Don’t expect to see John, Paul, George or Ringo look alikes, but do expect to hear your favorite Beatles songs performed just as you’ve come to know and love them. The Sun Kings perform more than 100 Beatles songs, spanning the entire musical career from “She Loves You” to “I am the Walrus.” The band members include: Drew Harrison as John Lennon, vocals and rhythm guitar; Michael Barrett as Paul, vocals, keyboards and guitar; Bill Zupko as George Harrison, vocals and lead guitar; Peter LoMenzo, bass, guitar and vocals; and Steve Scarpelli of San Jose as Ringo, drums and vocals.

AJAVU: Don’t lose their number!

(Sunday, 3:45 to 6pm) This trio recreates the distinctive sound of The Police and Sting with the sounds of lead singer and guitarist Brooks “Bee” Lundy, drummer John Messier and bassist Eric Swiharat. They roll out hits from “Roxanne” to ‘Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” to “King of Pain.” Stung has performed all around the world and has even been blessed by a sit-in performance by Police founder and drummer Stewart Copeland at his Beverly Hills birthday party. Stung captures the music styles of the Police, blending reggae with punk, jazz, funk and rock and pulling off renditions of other favorites such as “So Lonely” and “Every Breath You Take,” without missing a beat.

Take a Journey with Evolution (Saturday, 4 to 6pm)

Evolution is a tribute to Journey. Recognized as the best tribute band in Northern California by KFOX Radio, the band was formed in 2004 by lead guitarist Jerrol Reavis. It has brought the sound to many Journey fans in California and Nevada when the audience comes to life when they recognize the Journey tunes they have come to love from ballads to hard-hitting rock and roll hits. Besides Reavis, Evolution includes: John Joseph Siino III, vocalist; Don Stephenson, drums; Greg McCulley, keyboards; and Myron Edwins, bassist and vocalist.

Petty Theft: Won’t back down (Sunday, 12:45 to 2:45pm)

Love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? You’ll love Petty Theft with its re-creation of songs like “I Won’t Back Down” and “Honey Put on Your Party Dress.” This Bay Area tribute band has a hearty following and has performed at many local nightspots including Slims, Last Day Saloon and recently at he Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music. The band is: Django Bayles, bass and vocals; Dan Durkin, vocals, keyboards, guitar and harp; Ozzie James, guitar and vocals; and Rory Judge, drums. 8 S A N A N S E L M O A R T & W I N E F E S T I VA L 2 0 0 8

(Saturday, 11:15am to 1:15pm)

AJAVU celebrates the music of Steely Dan, featuring the band’s most popular and danceable hits. From “Hey Nineteen” and “Reelin In the Years” to “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” hear the tight chunky horns, vocals and solos non-for-note, backed up with an unparalleled rhythm section. The eight-piece group recreates the combination of rock, jazzy blues and storytelling that made Stelly Dan’s sound endure throughout pop culture for 30 years. Don’t miss their recreation of “Kid Charlemagne.”

Heart-Love Alive looks like the ’70s (Saturday, noon to 1:45pm; Sunday, 2 to 3:45pm) At first glimpse you will think you are seeing Ann Wilson, but it actually is a Southern California girl named Patricia Morales. Jeannie Austin brings Nancy Wilson to life. Love Alive doesn’t just perform the music they perform the band. The show begins with hits like “Magic Man” and “Barracuda” and moves through an adrenaline punched road show through times. They go through costume changes for each era including the troubadour look of the ’70s. Other band members include: Chad Quist, technical guitar; Ori Huberman, guitars and keyboards; Adam Leon, bass guitar; and Richard Graham, drums.

Santana tribute band ZEBOP! (Saturday, 2 to 3:45pm)

Taking their name from a classic 1981 Santana album these seven talented musicians perform the sound of Santana with passion and originality. ZEBOP has gained the attention of Bay Area Santana fans, which follow them to different music venues and festivals. The group was formed in 2005 by lead guitarist Antonio Marquez. Percussionist Ernesto Angulo and drummer Art Padilla joined him. Bassist Phil Bjurman brought his jazzy and funk bass sound and Enrique Luis Sandoval plays the congas contributing his technique to the Latin rhythm sounds. New to the band are Alfredo Eduardo Lazo and keyboardist David Pierce.

Lloyd Gregory: warm jazz (Saturday, 10 to 11:45am; Sunday 10:30 to 12:30pm) The class jazz guitar sound of Lloyd Gregory is smooth, soulful and melodic. With four albums under his belt, he has been a popular entertainer in the Bay Area music scene for decades and performed onstage with The Dells, Martha Reeves, Lenny Williams of Tower of Power, and more. All About Jazz reported: “San Francisco native Lloyd Gregory is the very essence of smooth jazz. Gregory’s guitar sounds sumptuous and sensual, communicating richness and warmth.

KEN PIEKNY

KEN PIEKNY

In 1862,

William Barber, who owned more than 130 acres in Ross Valley, married Elizabeth Bartlett Jackson, whose father was a discoverer of ether and whose uncle was Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson wrote glowingly about the area after a visit with his niece in 1871. ..................................... San Anselmo’s ďŹ rst post ofďŹ ce, built in 1892, was said to be the smallest in the state, measuring only seven feet by seven feet. No one but the postmaster was allowed in, so people had to stand outside, whatever the weather. ................................... Upper Ross Avenue was dubbed San Anselmo’s Little Italy because it was populated by 1906 quake refugees from North Beach, who planted grapevines on the hills. Townsfolk used to make wine together, taking the grape press from house to house. On hot autumn evenings, you could smell crushed grapes and fermenting wine in the air. ................................... In the early 1900s, San Anselmo’s few businesses were clustered along the dusty county roads of today’s Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Ross Avenue. When James Tunstead donated land for a town hall and ďŹ rehouse in 1911, businesses moved to what is now San Anselmo Avenue instead.

The town was once a hot spot for ďŹ lming silent movies, such as Cowpuncher’s Law (1911) and Two-Gun Man (1931). ..................................... Through the 1920s, the sidewalks of San Anselmo Avenue around Mariposa Avenue were made out of wood. ..................................... San Anselmo’s Ongaro Plumbing Company has been a family-run operation since 1932. Same with Sunnyside Nursery, which opened in 1940 and is run by the great great grandsons of early Marin, pioneer James Ross. ..................................... The Montgomery Chapel’s architecture contains unusual symbols that would have had strong appeal to men steeped in the lore of Freemasonry, as was Alexander Montgomery. ..................................... San Anselmo once had a miniature golf course, a bowling alley, an ice skating rink, and Arthur Murray’s dance studio. Source: The Marin Historical Society
