FROM THE

EDITOR As I write my editorial for this issue, Mother’s Day is a few days away and Father’s Day is right around the corner. I am so fortunate to have a Mother and Father who have always been there to love and support me throughout the years! They have been a great example of love, guidance, responsibility, faith, and integrity. They are amazing parents who set such a great foundation for me to follow, and I try to honor that every day.

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

One example of their values, is their belief in the junior livestock program. Mom and Dad were community leaders for 4-H, and they inspired, encouraged, and supported us (my sisters and I), and all the other kids in their programs. For my sisters and me, our parents were always there for us as we raised countless livestock projects, and were involved in a variety of other 4-H projects and endeavors.

Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com Instagram and Facebook Management: Riley Quinn – email: rileyquinn20@gmail.com

Family life was very important, so 4-H was a family affair. Our vacations were cattle-buying trips and going to shows and other events that pertained to what we loved. We didn’t have much money, but that didn’t stop Mom and Dad from figuring out how we could enjoy family life in a great way – through 4-H!

Representatives: Katina Costerisan (661) 330-6392 (CO) Email: kcosterisan@gmail.com Mike Rusher (503) 888-1823 (OR) Tiffany Carter (530) 409-5143

When I was growing up, sports were at certain times of the year, not year-round like now. Now parents, and families, have a lot more places to be, things to do, and schedules to figure out. Life moves fast, and it takes lots of planning and teamwork to fit so much in to each day. I know, sometimes decisions have to be made on what is most important, or what you have to give up in order to do something else. I hope family time is the one thing that is never given up – or given less time. When you hit the road to a jackpot, sports event, county fair, or something else, make sure there is family time included. These are great times to share and enjoy together! These are memories you will hold close to your heart for life. No matter the ups or downs – not enough time, or not enough money – just remember you can count on Mom and Dad, and everything will work out fine! This is the foundation I got from my parents, and I know they still support me in all I do!

Don’t take a single moment for granted; thank and love them every day. My Mom and Dad (Miti and Walt Beljean) will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in July, and I want to thank them for the

memories and for a strong foundation of life that I attribute to their love! In this issue is the feature section for the CJLA Award Banquet that we held in February. What a night, and what a tribute to a fine set of junior kids who work so hard to achieve their goals. I have so many people to thank for making it all possible – my crew who shows up every year - my family and friends! Also, everyone who helps and supports and gives of their time – I couldn’t do it without you! Thanks for helping CJLA give the kids a great night to remember! And a HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all the sponsors who generously give to the program, which allowed us to give great awards to the members. All this support is a testament to the strong belief in youth in agriculture – and it is awesome!

August 8 & 9, 2015

As we enter the middle of the year (already!), county fairs are going strong. Banners and buckles are up for grabs! Some will win, and some may be disappointed that they didn’t reach their goal. Don’t be discouraged. Figure out what you need to change and move forward for the next year.

IMPORTANT

CJLA NEWS AND UPDATES!

The year so far has flown by! There haven’t been many breaks between shows and attendance has been strong at all events. There is a still a full slate of shows for everyone to choose from so there are lots of options as you plan your future schedule. As we head into summer, it’s a good time to regroup and plan to hit the shows that will be held through the end of the year. With so many shows still to go, the points and standings will continue to change quite a bit. Remember, your top eight shows for the year count for the year-end total so there are many opportunities to either get your eight shows in, or to better your points. It’s not over ‘til it’s over! This is what is so awesome about the CJLA program. Everyone can work to improve and everyone has the chance to move up in the standings. And of course, we have to thank all the great people who continue to put on these jackpots for our youth who love to show. Be sure to take the time to say thank you to them when you are at the show so they also know you appreciate their efforts.

membership by our members, their families. If you were a 2014 member and were unable to attend the banquet, we want to be sure you get your packets (CJLA t-shirt and goodies), and any awards you won. We are asking for a small donation of $5.00 to help with postage and mailing costs. Send to CJLA**PO Box 41430**San Jose, CA**95160 - along with the member name and mailing address and we will ship your items to you. We gave out some really awesome awards and EVERYONE wants a CJLA t-shirt, so be sure to get yours! In the next issue of this magazine, we will feature a complete feature on all the award winners and highlights of the banquet.

All members have been emailed a 2015 Sanctioned Show List and 2015 Rule Handbook. They are also posted on the CJLA website. Please check the website regularly as updates will be posted there. There have been a few revisions in the new Rulebook so read it through and PLEASE PRINT them for your reference!! We provide you with all information and rules by E-mail, posting on the website, and in this magazine article. It is your responsibility to read the information sent to you and to know the CJLA rules. We are here to help so if you don’t understand something or have ANY questions, please contact us. To save on the cost of postage, the majority of our communication will be by E-mail. If you are not receiving anything from CJLA, let us know so we can check or update our records!

The Points are in this issue. Yippee! ALL SHOWS ARE INCLUDED THROUGH THE MJC CLASSIC JACKPOT ON APRIL 4TH. Please take the time to look them over. Find your name and make sure it’s in the correct division. Check your points and let us know if you have any questions. If you joined this year and your name is not listed, it could be because we were still processing your membership application when we had to go to print. We ask that you double-check with us to be sure, but everything we have accounted for will be processed and recorded in the next points update. We will be working on our PayPal system to make it easier in the future, but right now the PayPal is processed with the name of the person who paid it – usually a parent. Then we have to request the member info and this takes some time to get back to us. Another thing I want to make everyone aware of, PayPal has a feature to do automatic annual renewals. We are getting many transactions that were generated because of this. I would suggest that if you have paid with PayPal and you do not want an automatic deduction for dues to occur next year that you log-in to PayPal through the CJLA website and cancel this feature. We cannot do it for you!

Questions? Emails can sent to cjlainfo@yahoo.com or through the CJLA website: www.cjlainfo.com Heidi Beljean at 408-888-2503 or pacshow@earthlink.net (CJLA info, memberships, & sponsorships) Mary Ann Bush at 831-905-5665 or cjlainfo@yahoo.com (CJLA Rules & Points)

Calling all youth exhibiting livestock projects - Be a Digi-Star Champion Enter to win a livestock scale from May 1-May 30.

pion Contest is just one of the ways we can share our passion with the next generation,” says Nicole Turner, Digi-Star animal products manager.

The 2015 "Be a Digi-Star Champion" Contest runs May 1- May 30. Youth livestock exhibitors are eligible to enter by posting a picture of their 2015 livestock project to Digi-Star's Facebook page, www.facebook. com/DigiStarLLC. The photo that receives the most votes will win their choice of an Alleyway or Wrangler Jr. Livestock scale,or a StockWeigh 300 indicator.

Recognizing that access to a scale often limits this key measurement process, Digi-Star developed the Be a Digi-Star Champion Contest in 2013. The winner will be the exhibitor whose picture receives the most Facebook votes by 5:00p.m, May 30, 2015. After the contest ends, anyone that entered will receive a special discount code for Digi-Star's online store. The contest is open to all youth under 21 exhibiting livestock during the 2015 show season.

The 2014, winning photo of Drake and Alyssa Hoyt and their market lambs received more than 1,200 likes. They chose a Wrangler Jr. Livestock scale with a StockWeigh 300 indicator as their prize.

In an ongoing effort to support youth livestock education, Digi-Star also offers specific discounts to Vo-Ag instructors for livestock scale systems purchased online at Digi-Star.com. Instructors simply need to call 800-225-7695 and request the Vo-Ag coupon code. For more information call (920) 563-1400 or email: sales@digi-star.com.

"It is awesome! So far we've weighed six pigs, three sheep, three dogs and all the kids. It transports easily in the back of my pick up and it's nice it only needs 2AA batteries to operate," says Justin Hoyt, Drake and Alyssa's dad. “Digi-Star has deep roots in agriculture and the Be a Digi-Star Cham-

Angus Seeks Applicants for Junior Breed Ambassador do that nationally is very exciting.”

Submit an application by June 1 to be considered for the NJAA ambassador position.

While serving in the position, the Ambassador will travel to the Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show in Overland Park, Kan.; a Certified Angus Beef® Building Blocks Seminar in Wooster, Ohio; the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattle Industry Annual Convention in San Diego, Calif.; the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Research Symposium and Convention; and the Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders Conference in Canada.

The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) is now accepting applications for the Angus Ambassador competition. An elite representative for the Angus breed, the ambassador serves a one-year term as spokesperson for the NJAA’s nearly 6,000 members. Applications must be postmarked by June 1. “The Angus Ambassador position is a unique opportunity for one of our junior members to build upon their passion for beef cattle by interacting with other Angus producers, industry influencers and others throughout a number of events during the year,” says Jaclyn Upperman, American Angus Association®’s director of events and education.

Additonal travel options vary depending on the selected ambassador’s location, schedule and availability. To be eligible for the Angus Ambassador competition, applicants must be Association members of good standing, between the ages 17-20 as of Jan. 1, who own purebred cattle. They must submit a cover letter, résumé and two essay responses, which can be found online.

Emma Jumper, Paragould, Ark., is currently serving as the 2014-2015 Angus Ambassador. A former National Beef Ambassador, Jumper’s involvement in the beef business runs deep. She and her family operate Rock Creek Angus Ranch in northeast Arkansas, where Jumper says she experienced some of her most important life lessons.

All applications must be postmarked by June 1 and sent to the Association’s Events and Education Department, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506.

Jumper is a junior at Mississippi State University double majoring in business administration and foreign language.

Once the applications are reviewed, five finalists will be invited to the Association headquarters on July 23 to participate in the final round of competition, which includes an interview and formal presentation with a panel of judges. The new Angus Ambassador will be chosen at the conclusion of the day.

“Traveling around my state talking about agriculture and about the Angus industry especially in the Delta, where I live, is an experience that I greatly value,” Jumper said. “So many people know what it’s like to see cotton and corn and rice being raised, but they are very unsure what it’s like to be a rancher. And so, taking that to the next level and being able to

row, which I am honored to have accomplished. Witnessing my breeding sows, female hogs that have had a litter, farrow out their litter is an eyeopening event that most would not find inspiring. The experience of new life is incredible to witness, but experiencing the birth of an individual is profound. Life works in strange ways, and we should take advantage of every opportunity, even if that opportunity is not revealed directly to you. Understanding this phrase will bring a different prosperity for your life as it did for me, since I have encountered a variety of life-changing experiences that have made my own world develop.

By Kiana Peters, 1st Place Winner, 16-19 Division

Participating in 4-H the past eight years and FFA the past four years, I have spent numerous hours working with livestock. In raising, breeding, showing and selling my valued hogs, I have spent sleepless nights and early mornings. I have 40 different hogs annually, not to mention the 15 breeding sows that I maintain on a yearly basis. Beginning in February, my mother and I travel to livestock events each weekendSaturday and Sunday, attending approximately twenty-one shows each year. These shows are held throughout California, Arizona, Iowa, Denver, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kentucky. Pulling trailers countless miles every weekend is laborious.

Being the fourth generation in my family's farming company, I started to pursue Agrelated activities such as 4H and Future Farmers of America. I pushed myself to an even higher level and joined various organizations: National Junior Swine Association, California Junior Livestock Association, Team Purebred, California Pork Producers, National Swine Registry, et cetera. Being in the California Junior Livestock Association has expanded my world in the livestock. I have been able to promote the agricultural industry in a more dominant way by talking with more of our community.

For as long as I can remember, I have missed the last week of school as well as many high school events including homecoming, graduations and the illustrious SAT or ACT test dates. Choosing between my farming life and school life has not been an easy task, but my love for the livestock industry is a devotion I am fully committed to. Traveling with my mom and ranch hands, following in her footsteps, has been an education all of its own. I wish to continue following in her footsteps by receiving my American Degree in the next two years.

Our local 4-H and FFA members from the community visit our ranch to buy the hogs we breed and raise to show at their own county fairs; I serve as a mentor to members through educating them on the qualities in the pork industry that judges are looking for (muscle definitions, carcass lengths, cuts of meats), and specific feed ratios (protein levels) hogs should be receiving at different ages. My ambition to continue serving as a mentor is a result of the fact that the education of our youth is most valuable aspect for the future of the agricultural industry. I have learned these valuable traits from past CJLA members who have made their own mark in the organization. Looking up to older members when I first joined the CJLA will always be the most memorable aspect to me. I strove to become the boy or girl who won every class even if they didn’t have the champion animal.

CJLA has placed me in a position to have many opportunities. One of the biggest opportunities I have received was selling one my own boars (not castrated male hog) at the Oklahoma Fall Classic for $26,000. I was in a partnership with my famous breeder, Nathan Copp of Powerhouse Farms, who had the sire to my boar. It was the second-highestselling hog at the show with over hundreds of exhibitors from the ages of 17 and above with every breed of hog. I was able to compete in the open show with breeders who have been in the industry for countless years. It was truly an honor to achieve this lifetime goal, which has helped me go on to conquer more incentives such as winning the first trailer to be won at the 2013 Western Bonzana in Paso Robles.

My own world in the livestock industry has been developed through the comfortable environment others have made for me. When I attend a jackpot show, I see the families who participate in the shows and the competitive feeling they receive there. Without being a member of the CJLA, I would never be able to experience these surroundings firsthand and visualize the true meaning of “prepping livestock. Consistently, this lifestyle has placed me with numerous Supervised Agricultural Experience projects, officer positions including West Fresno Madera FFA sectional reporter, chapter President, past Vice President), Career Development Event teams (Opening and Closing team winner two times and Outstanding President 2011), state FFA convention delegate, Student Body President and Vice President and FFA degrees (Greenhand, Chapter, and State).

The Ag industry has given me the opportunity to excel not only in the community but also on a national level. I try to educate others outside of the industry on what I have learned, to understand how meaningful agriculture is to us. The CJLA has brought me nothing but success, memories, and a place in my own part of the world. The enthusiasm kids put into the industry has made me realize why receiving an award supporting our pork producers is such a proud accomplishment. Without the help of the CJLA, I would never have been able to achieve my dreams of going to a prestigious college. I plan on attending Cornell University in the fall of 2015 in the college of agriculture and life sciences. The opportunity CJLA has given me redefined the direction my life was on. I have advanced tremendously from my membership in this organization. I know the CJLA will benefit me in my future plans of going to the field of public relations and international business by being able to educate and advertise the agricultural industry to a better extent.

My farming background has helped me to receive state awards for Fiber/ Oil Production and Pomology with my 40 acres of cotton and 20 acres of cantaloupes that I managed on a daily basis. The knowledge I have acquired from the agricultural programs has been an important aspect in my life, especially when dealing with real-life situations through communication, public relations, and time management skills. Through these programs I have earned many titles such as my Future Farmer State Degree, California Junior Livestock Association Overall Hog Winner in 2013 as well as CJLA hog showmanship winner for 4 years in a MAY/JUNE 2015

friends but your competitors is rare. The continuous support of your friends inside and outside the ring is a blessing. Win or lose, you will always exit the ring to friends who will love and support you no matter the outcome.

By Amanda Taylor, 1st-Place Winner, 13-15 Division

Besides the understanding of the lifestyle, being a part of CJLA offers the opportunity to track your success along with others throughout the year. As CJLA posts points during the year, you are able to follow the scores of yours and your fellow members placings. This provides you with the ability to know where you stand and can help you with making goals for the next show you attend. Your county fair gives you the opportunity to compete with local youth. CJLA-sponsored events give you the opportunity to compete with youth who come from all different parts of California. This allows you not only to compete with one set of showmen each year, but rather a variety of showmen who each possess their own style of showing all year long.

As a first year California Junior Livestock Association member, I can tell you first hand that the most memorable lesson I have learned is that I am not alone and neither are you. When I am asked “Why should I join CJLA?” I can confidently respond with “The youth around you understand.” Your fellow junior livestock members become your friends, your sounding boards, your supporters, a shoulder to cry on, a smile to celebrate with, and a family when you’re not at home.

Although I have yet to attend a California Junior Livestock Association banquet, it is an event I have been looking forward to since I joined in 2014. Spending the evening celebrating the successes earned by the friends I have made makes me feel honored to be a part of such an exceptional organization. This organization also offers to its members awards for our achievements that we have put so much time and effort into earning. We are allowed the chance to stand in front of our family and friends as we are acknowledged for our outstanding success.

Showing livestock on a competitive level where your weekends are spent on the road, not at a football game or a dance, is hard for most youth of today to understand. After-school events come after blowing legs, working showmanship, cleaning pens, making trips to feed stores and then, of course, homework. Most of your peers at school don’t understand why you would go to so much trouble and work so hard just for a chance at a win. A lot of times they don’t understand that raising livestock is our passion.

The last but definitely not least benefit that I would like to acknowledge is the chance to participate on the Junior Board. You are given the option to vote for fellow members or be voted on by fellow members to represent the position you are elected for. Being a part of the Junior Board enables you to have a voice in matters that affect the organization.

Traveling away from home on a regular basis would be difficult if you didn’t have the peace of mind of knowing that you will be spending time with friends and peers who understand the amount of work we have all put in, the demanding schedules we all possess, and the value of the friendships we have created. Not only do you have friends as you travel, but you have family. Other livestock families also understand what is like to be constantly traveling. Having another family eating dinner with you at ten o’clock at night after a long day of preparing livestock for the show the next day or after a long day of walking in and out of the ring is always comforting.

When you take into account all of the advantages of joining CJLA, your decision should be easy. The friendships you will develop, the memories you will make, the opportunities you are allowed, and the friendly competition you will experience can be discovered within no other organization but the California Junior Livestock Association.

2nd Place Winner, 13-15 Division: Mikaela Santos Tomasin

Your “inside the ring” experiences are the most memorable ones. Being allowed the opportunity to share those experiences with not only your

lend a helping hand when you’ve forgotten something at home or when you need a ringside helper. I couldn’t have shown my pig like I do now without them. Some of the most encouraging people I have on my show team are my parents. They are the ones who push me to be the best I can be. They are the first ones to congratulate me when I get out of the show ring. They are the ones who remind me every night to walk my pig, and without them, I wouldn’t be half the showman I am now. My mom and my dad are the two people that I appreciate most in life. Encouragement is one of the biggest parts of teamwork.

By Savanah Downs, 1st-Place Winner, 9-12 Division Hello, my name is Savanah Downs. I am 11 years old and a 6th grader at Lakeside Middle School in Bakersfield. 2014 was my first year showing swine as a California Junior Livestock Association member. I have learned many valuable lessons while showing hogs, but above all, I think the most valuable lesson I learned this year is the power of teamwork. I believe that good teamwork creates friendships, encouragement, and a great partnership between you and your pig.

One of the greatest types of teamwork in swine showmanship is the bond between you and your pig. It’s a partnership and you have to work together. When one of the partners is having an off day, the other has to compensate and adjust. I have learned to read how my pig is feeling and I know that every day is not going to be a great day, but if we work together we can achieve something good. This definitely takes time, practice, and lots of patience, but once you have achieved their trust, you and your pig will shine. To a good showman, one of the greatest bonds of teamwork and friendship is the one between you and your animal.

I have met many people and made lifetime bonds through teamwork and CJLA My show team is like a family to me. My coaches and teammates have taught me how to show better. They have given me helpful tips and pointers for the show ring. When I entered the ring at my first jackpot show, I thought, ok, this will be like the county fair, just keep calm and show. Well, I learned a lot at that first show. I learned that it is not even close to the county fair. My fellow CJLA members that I showed against are the best that California has to offer and I had no idea what I was in for. My coach told me after the show that I have to find my “show style” so that I won’t get lost in the crowd. Show after show, I worked with my pig and watched the more seasoned CJLA members show so that I could figure out what style and techniques would help me. It’s nice to be around a group of showmen who will

CJLA has changed my life. It has taught me unforgettable life lessons and the power of teamwork. It has given me something new and enjoyable to do with my spare time. I have made lifelong friendships through CJLA and met some amazing showmen. I can’t wait for the show season to start. I love my show team, the show ring and my hog!
